• Do you store mysql exports in your version control tool for reverting to in event of error?

  We run an internal web server with in-house software to run a manufacturing line. When new product features are to be added, either or both of the following occur: changes to the in-house server software may be required to support these - these are for significant changes in functionality, being code drive. changes to the MySQL database for new entries for the part numbers, these are for smaller changes, configurations, changes to already existing values and parameters -- such changes don't require code changes. Ideally we'd want our changes to be here rather than in item 1. Item 1 is version controlled in Subversion, so previous revisions can be referred to for rolling back to in the event of problems introduced in the latest revision. But what about changes to the MySQL database? We have quality processes to ensure that such changes are error-free but there is always a chance that errors can pass through, e.g. mistake in data entry or faults with the code that uses the MySQL corrupting the database etc. We have a automated backup every 6 hours but what if we want more manual defined checkpoints in between these intervals, we could use the same backup system but I wondered if folks here used other methods to store previous states of databases, e.g. exporting the database as a plain text SQL dump -- at least with this method it would be possible to see diffs e.g. in Beyond Compare for trouble shooting. Thoughts?

• Looking for a free or open-source burner emulator [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Virtual CDR driver I am looking for a free or open-source virtual CD/DVD emulator to run in a Windows environment. What I want is similar to what SlySoft's Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools provides, but the emulated drive needs to be a burner of some type. The burner should be able to save disc images (.iso, .ccd, etc) to my harddrive - basically, the same as if I burned the files to a CD-R, and then ripped them back to a disc image. I have already looked around some and come across 2 - DVD neXt COPY iTurns and NoteBurner M4P. Both of these programs create a virtual CD-RW drive, but they are integrated into their product (for burning from iTunes to create mp3 files) and cannot create disc images. I am currently writing a piece of software that will have the capability to burn disc images onto CDs/DVDs, and I don't want to end up with a 100 coasters while I'm testing my software. • Cant install wine1.5 13.04

  So I tried to install wine 1.5 a few times, I got 1.4 installed, and 1.6 installed oddly enough, I completely removed and purged all wine and still nothing. I installed ia32-lib and still nothing, tried installing from synaptic, ubuntu software center, and apt-get method. I get this error from apt-get in the terminal Reading package lists... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: wine1.5 : Depends: wine1.6 but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. • Microsoft Basic Office 2007 Activation Keys won't work after re-installing on my Laptop

  So, I've upgraded my hard-drive on my laptop, and proceeded to grab my trusty copper-faced Official MS Office disk to do an install. I have three licenses with the fancy green-blue paper that identifies the license keys. Problem is, that for each of these license keys, when the Office 2007 software asks that I enter the "Product Key" it states: The key is incorrect. Verify that you have the correct key, and then retype it Why would Microsoft want to inhibit/prohibit re-installs on the same machine that the software was initially installed to? Incidentally, the same goofy error happens with each of the three valid product key (activation keys) that I enter.

• need recommendation for running PHP/Zend based optimizer

  Firstly, I must admit that I don't know much about setting up PHP beyond the basics. I have an Ubuntu 10.04 server system (hosted) running primarily as an FTP store for a commercial store software. The server that the commercial store is installed on is unfortunately not very reliable, and would like to move that to this Ubuntu 10.04 server. (We've already received permission from the store vendor to do this.) My problem is that they use Zend optimizer which is only compatible with PHP 5.2. I have tried a couple of "hacks" to downgrade PHP to 5.2, but it breaks so many other things that it doesn't seem worth it. My idea is to install some sort of container of Ubuntu 8.04 (like OpenVZ) on the server to house a native install of PHP 5.2 to meet the dependency of the store software. However, it appears that OpenVZ is no longer supported on Ubuntu. Is there another solution similar that I could run on a hosted server to installed a separate "container-like" 8.04 system?

To me, it is the best tool for generating your entities and mappings from an existing database (it also allows you to go the other way, but I honestly have never used it that way). What I like most about it: Great support: folks at Slyce always listen to your suggestions, give you feedback in a timely manner, and I was even lucky enough to have some of my suggestions implemented! The templating engine, which is very powerful, and more user-friendly than, for example, MyGeneration’s; one of the included templates is Sharp Architecture; Advanced model validations: it even warns you about having lazy properties declared in non-lazy entities; Integration with NHibernate Validator and generation of validation rules automatically based on the database, or on user-defined model settings; The designer: they opted for not displaying all entities in a single screen, which I think was a good decision; has support for all inheritance strategies (table per class hierarchy, table per class, table per concrete class); Generation of FluentNHibernate mappings as well as hbm.xml. I have some questions regarding this configuration: I think it is a raid configuration.Please correct me if I am wrong. I read that, mirroring is nothing but raid-1 configuration. • How should I host our scalable worker processes?

  We are designing a new architecture for an enterprise business. The principles we've followed so far is not to develop what you can (possible buy and) deploy, ie, don't reinvent any wheels. In this way we've decided on CQRS, RabbitMQ, Riak and a bunch of other things. We still need to write /some/ business code though and these will be in the form of worker processes, which will consume commands from a message queue and after any side-effects, produce events onto another message queue. The idea behind this is that via the competing-consumers design we will have a scalable design right out of the box. One option is of writing a management infrastructure that will know how to: deploy code instantiate processes kill processes update configuration etc IE provide fault tolerance and scalability. Also, this is exactly what something like GAE and Heroku does for you, but in a public setting and in our organization, public is bad. My question is, is there an out-of-the-box solution that we can use to host our consumers in? Like a private cloud or private platform-as-a-service. Private Heroku or GAE. Is there some kind of software or software product with which we can do all of these things and thereby get scalability and fault tolerance over our consumers?

Verburg, one of the leading movers and shakers in the Java community, is well known for his ‘diabolical developer” talks at JavaOne where he uncovers some of the worst practices that Java developers are prone to. He mentions a few in the interview: * “A lack of communication: Software development is far more a social activity than a technical one; most projects fail because of communication issues and social dynamics, not because of a bad technical decision. Sadly, many developers never learn this lesson.* No source control: Some developers simply store code in local file systems and e-mail the code in order to integrate their changes; yes, this still happens.* Design-driven design: Some developers are inclined to cram every design pattern from the Gang of Four (GoF) book into their projects. Of course, by that stage, they've actually forgotten why they're building the software in the first place.” He points to a couple of core assumptions and confusions that lead to trouble: “One is that developers think that the JVM is a magic box that will clean up their memory and make their code run fast, as well as make them cups of coffee. The JVM does help in a lot of cases, but bad code can and will still lead to terrible results! The other trend is to try to force Java (the language) to do something it's not very good at, such as rapid Web development. So you get a proliferation of overly complex frameworks, libraries, and techniques trying to get around the fact that Java is a monolithic, statically typed, compiled, OO environment.   So I was reading from a previous thread about App vs Game Development: If it was for you to chose Game Development vs Application Development, which will you chose? Which brought me to this site: EA: The Human Story A lot of it talked about developers working something like 85 hours a week, and not getting paid overtime, or anything. Just getting paid for the 40 hours. Is this normal for most software companies? I mean where I work I'm only an entry level guy but I get overtime, and anything over 40 hours is considered this. But it got me thinking "Holy crap" I could never do that. My FREE time is important to me. But is this commonplace in most software companies? Or is more a rarity to certain types (game development, etc)? Because it got me scared! Like I understand having to put some extra hours in for a project... but like 80! that's ridiculous.

• DB2 v10.1 Now Supports Solaris 11 (SPARC)

  IBM's has just released a fixpack for DB2 v10.1 which provides Solaris 11 support. Per the IBM DB2 support statement for Solaris: Support for Oracle Solaris 11.1 was added as of DB2 v10.1 fixpack 4, released May 23rd, 2014. The DB2 v10.1 Information Centre does not yet reflect this change. Plans for DB2 v10.5 will be announced at a later date. DB2 on Solaris 11 is supported on SPARC only. At this time there are no announced plans to support Solaris 11 for x64 platforms, or versions of DB2 prior to v10.1. This fixpack is now available for Solaris users via all supported distribution channels from IBM.

• How to monitor the network traffic on a router?

  Here's my current network set-up: we have 3 users connecting to a Thomson Gateway router (TG585 v8) provided by my ISP. We are connecting over an ADSL line. The problem is that we have a limited data allowance (60GB) and we always exceed it. I would like to monitor how much traffic each computer makes. The best solution would be to install a software on the router (like OpenWRT) which would monitor how much traffic each computer makes. But I couldn't find any replacement firmware that would support my router. The other solution would be to install a software on each machine and then collect all the data at the end of the mount. But that's not a very good think to do. Plus, the users can always shut down the application. Any suggestions?

But long term projects like collision avoidance technology in automobiles are going to require it.Some of the work he's doing with his Java-based MAX, set of software building blocks containing a wide range of low level and higher level software modules that developers can use to build simple to complex robot and automation applications faster and cheaper, already provide some support for JAUS compliance and because their based on Java, access to standards based security APIs.But, as Paul explained to me, "the bottom line is…it depends on the criticality level of the bot, it's network connectivity, and whether or not a standards compliance is required."

I'm looking for a method to limit all users, with the exception of one specific local user. However, the limitation appears to be additive - there is no way (that I know of) to define an exception for a specific user. Is there some kind of alternative?

• Canon LiDE 600F FAU on Snow Leopard?

  I have been able to use my Canon LiDE 600F scanner under Snow Leopard to scan paper sheet, after installing Canon's latest driver software. However, I cannot find a way to make the FAU (Film Adaptor Unit) to work: Canon's software want to calibrate it first and gives an error message "Calibration cannot be performed. Pull out the film. 182.0.0". (of course there is no film). Hamrick's VueScan doesn't seem to support the FAU Apple's Image Capture doesn't propose a film option either Did I miss something? Did somebody manage to scan film (positive or negative) using the LiDE 600F under Snow Leopard? Many thanks

• Do support sites like stackoverflow upset the paid-support open source model?

  In order to stay relevant in the marketplace, I'm researching new business models for my software company. The open source model with paid support seems like a good fit for our product, but I have concerns about whether or not a paid support model is viable in an era where top-notch help is readily available for free on sites like those in the StackExchange network. Case in point -- I moved my employees to Ubuntu last year because I didn't want to pay for Win 7 licenses and new hardware (plus, the mono platform was highly attractive). My staff had no Linux experience, but were able to achieve relative competency in about 120 days with the help of AskUbuntu, StackOverflow, and a few "For Dummies" books. We did employ an Ubuntu consultant for 7 days to provide training and support, but beyond that spent $0.00 on any kind of paid expertise. In regards to my due diligence, I ran a 3 month beta of the freemium-paid-support model with one of our smaller customers, and achieved mediocre results. I'd like to think its because our software is so stable and easy to use that the customer didn't need much paid support, but I suspect that they circumvented the terms of our SLA in the same manner that we did with the move to Ubuntu. Does anyone out there has any thoughts, advice, or experience relevant to the move I'm considering? What worked, what didn't, etc? Thanks in advance!

• Must developers understand the business domain or should the specification be sufficient?

  I work for a company for which the domain is really difficult to understand because it is high technology in electronics, but this is applicable to any software development in a complex domain. The application that I work on displays a lot of information, charts, and metrics which are difficult to understand without experience in the domain. The developer uses a specification to describe what the software must do, such as specifing that a particular chart must display this kind of metrics and this metric is the following arithmetic formula. This way, the developer doesn't really understand the business and what/why he is doing this task. This can be OK if specification is really detailled but when it isn't or when the author has forgotten a use case, this is quite hard for the developer to find a solution. At the other hand, training every developer to all the business aspects can be very long and difficult. Should we give more importance to detailled specification (but as we know, perfect specification does not exist) or should we train all the developers to understand the business domain? EDIT: keep in mind in your answer that the company could used external developpers.

• Ubuntu 11.10 logs off when clicking shutdown

  As the title says: when I click Shutdown from the menu it logs off. When I click shutdown from the log-in menu it does nothing. I'm using a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. I can force it to shutdown by the command below, but I don't want to keep typing that whenever I want to shutdown my laptop. sudo shutdown -h now So it's probably processes which arn't closing. I'm a novice linux user, so I have no idea how to rule out the software causing this. I think it's either Gwibber/Empathy, perhaps Mozilla Thunderbird, because this is happening since I started using this. So a few questions: How do I rule out what software is causing this? How do I stop it from not closing on shutdown? If 1. and 2. don't work is it possible to add top command to the shutdown process? Edit: Rourke here. • how can I discover what keys are being sent when I press a mouse button?

  I'd like to map my Logitech MX Revolution keys in Visual Studio. More importantly, I'd like to do it without installing any software. Is this possible? I specifically want to map the two side buttons to View.NavigateBackward and View.NavigateForward. But I'm not sure what those keys are mapped to right now. I thought they were mapped to Ctrl-Tab and Shift-Ctrl-Tab, since they seem to behave that way in Notepad++, but that isn't working in VS. I'm on the work computer, which means 2 problems: I'm in Windows XP and installing software is frowned upon/monitored.

• Giving a scanner-printer-combo a zoom function when copying ?

  You know how everytime you go to a photocopying shop, photocopiers always have a neat zoom function (it can take whatever you give it, and zoom it in/out, so your copy comes out smaller or larger). I got one of those neat 3-in-one printer machines. It has a copy button on it, but it also has some software that comes with it (Epson SX115 to be exact is the model). Apart from going into some photo manipulation application, is there some way (software) to give it that feature. So, in short, I need something that can scan a page, scale it to let's say, a quarter of its size, and then print it out ? Anyone knows of anything like that ?
