• How to Manage project in this scenario

  Hi All, I am working on a web application which has got good amount of static or pre-login pages. These pages can have some simple forms as well where we would like to capture the visitor's details. Post login, I have got my main application. I am confused about the development and deployment architecture of my application. Post login part of my application has a release cycle of 1-2 months while pre-login pages are to be updated on a weekly basis. It is difficult to make a release of pre-login pages as the overall war also contains post-login application & which sometimes is not release ready. Currently, I have got both these parts bundled in the single war project. Please help me by letting me know the best practices whereby I can achieve following: Manage the releases of these two parts independently. I am using Maven. So is there a way I can share the resources, such as CSS, images etc between these two parts. Header and footer of my application is going to be same on pre-login & post-login pages. I was thinking of deploying these apps as two war files in my tomcat container. But then how will I manage the common resources like Css, images etc. Rgds Vijay

  Hi I'm doing the Collatz sequence problem in project Euler (problem 14). My code works with numbers below 100000 but with numbers bigger I get stack over-flow error. Is there a way I can re-factor the code to use tail recursion, or prevent the stack overflow. • How do you handle your "Project Manager"

  I currently work for a company who recently has downsized. I do all in house work, client installs, builds,q.a, well basically all the in house work. My direct boss is VERY untechnical and lately I have found it VERY hard to deal with his lack of knowledge. The biggest issues I have had are as follows: I am on many deadlines at a time. I get stopped to put together a half fast quote as I cannot be late on the deadline, in the meantime, three support calls comes in, I give quote, time too much so they outsource it. I then I have to fix everything the vendor broke. I get asked, when an issue arrises, why is the issue occurring and explain in detail, yet that detail means absolutly nothing to him. All he cares about are deadlines, yet he is the one who schdules everything. "I am a programmer not a graphic designer, meaqns nothing to him" I was hired as a .NET programmer, yet they let a vendor choose wordpress for many sites(yeah I had to learn all about it quick) I guess I can go on and on, but has anyone had to deal with this type of project manager? What is some advice, other than finding another job. Thanks in advance, and I made this a wiki, so please don't close...

• kohana project structure

  Hello Guys. I'm investigating using Kohana for my next project. The site will consist of user registration (and hence user profiles) where users will have certain privileges. The site will also have an admin section where administrators can go to say block a user or delete a post or look at usage statistics for example. A good comparison site would be a multi-user blog, where each blogger depending on her/his permissions can post/edit/delete blogs...just as an example. Firstly, I'm not sure about how to set up the controller/view structure in order to separate the admin section from the front facing site. I'm using Kohana 3, so I was thinking of a controller structure like so: application/classes/controller/front (front facing)...and application/classes/controller/admin (for administrative section). Or I notice you may be able to use the Route class to set up routes, so I could set up an "admin" route. for example: www.example.com/admin will lead to the admin logon screen. www.example.com --- front controller. As well, can I somehow separate the "Admin" views and controllers from the "front facing" views and controllers like divide them up based on folder structure? Any help is very much appreciated. • Visual Studio 2008 project file does not load because of an unexpected encoding change.

  In our team we have a database project in visual Studio 2008 which is under source control by Team Foundation Server. Every two weeks or so, after one co-worker checks in, the project file won't load on the other developers machines. The error message is: The project file could not be loaded. Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1. When I look at the project file in Notepad++, the file looks like this: ??<NUL?NULxNULmNULlNUL NULvNULeNULrNULsNULiNULoNULnNUL ... and so on (you can see <?xml version in this) whereas an normal project file looks like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?> ... So probably something is wrong with the encoding of the file. This is a problem for us because it turns out to be impossible to get the file encoding correct again. The 'solution' is to throw away the project file an get the last know working version from source control. According to the file, the encoding should be UTF-16. According to Notepad++, the corrupted file is actually UTF-8. My questions are: Why is Visual Studio messing up the encoding of the project file, apparently at random times and at random machines? What should we do to prevent this? When it has happened, is there a possibility to restore the current file in the correct encoding instead of pulling an older version from source control? As a last note: the problem is with one single project file, all other project files don't expose this problem.

• Delete specific files after installation using visual studio setup project

  I have this problem. I want to build an installer for my c# solution, that will be placed in a folder with other installation folders and files that are needed to be copied to the installed folder. So that is easy, I just copy them to the folder I create using the folder structure I want. Now, I want also to install another program and run a .exe file I've created to unzip some files for me. For that I need to copy 2 .exe files and 2 dlls (for the exes) to the folder to which I am installing and create 2 custom actions that will use them. That I've managed to do. After that I want to delete those 4 extra files, as the user does not need them and shouldn't even be aware they are there. How to do so? I couldn't find a way in the built in setup project preferences + I do not know how to make a custom installer class. A bonus question, is how to make the other installer (one of the .exe files is just a plain installer) install quietly to any path? I do not want the user to see an installer pop out of my program installer. Thanks!

• Lazy Sequences that "Look Ahead" for Project Euler Problem 14

  I'm trying to solve Project Euler Problem 14 in a lazy way. Unfortunately, I may be trying to do the impossible: create a lazy sequence that is both lazy, yet also somehow 'looks ahead' for values it hasn't computed yet. The non-lazy version I wrote to test correctness was: (defn chain-length [num] (loop [len 1 n num] (cond (= n 1) len (odd? n) (recur (inc len) (+ 1 (* 3 n))) true (recur (inc len) (/ n 2))))) Which works, but is really slow. Of course I could memoize that: (def memoized-chain (memoize (fn [n] (cond (= n 1) 1 (odd? n) (+ 1 (memoized-chain (+ 1 (* 3 n)))) true (+ 1 (memoized-chain (/ n 2))))))) However, what I really wanted to do was scratch my itch for understanding the limits of lazy sequences, and write a function like this: (def lazy-chain (letfn [(chain [n] (lazy-seq (cons (if (odd? n) (+ 1 (nth lazy-chain (dec (+ 1 (* 3 n))))) (+ 1 (nth lazy-chain (dec (/ n 2))))) (chain (+ n 1)))))] (chain 1))) Pulling elements from this will cause a stack overflow for n2, which is understandable if you think about why it needs to look 'into the future' at n=3 to know the value of the tenth element in the lazy list because (+ 1 (* 3 n)) = 10. Since lazy lists have much less overhead than memoization, I would like to know if this kind of thing is possible somehow via even more delayed evaluation or queuing?

  As a neophyte clojurian, it was recommended to me that I go through the Project Euler problems as a way to learn the language. Its definitely a great way to improve your skills and gain confidence. I just finished up my answer to problem #14. It works fine, but to get it running efficiently I had to implement some memoization. I couldn't use the prepackaged memoize function because of the way my code was structured, and I think it was a good experience to roll my own anyways. My question is if there is a good way to encapsulate my cache within the function itself, or if I have to define an external cache like I have done. Also, any tips to make my code more idiomatic would be appreciated. This tab shows you the local file system associated with the instance and any shared storage libraries mounted by Ops Center. More detailed information about file system storage is available under the Analytics tab under the sub-tab named Charts. Here, you can select and display the individual mount points of an OS, and export the utilization data if desired: In this example, the OS instance has a basic root file partition and several NFS directories. Each file system mount point can be independently chosen for display in the Ops Center chart. File Systems and Incident  Reporting Every asset managed by Ops Center has a "monitoring policy", which determines what represents a reportable issue with the asset. The policy is made up of a bunch of monitoring rules, where each rule describes An attribute to monitor The conditions which represent an issue The level or levels of severity for the issue When the conditions are met, Ops Center sends a notification and creates an incident. By default, OS instances have three monitoring rules associated with file systems: File System Reachability: Triggers an incident if a file system is not reachable NAS Library Status: Triggers an incident for a value of "WARNING" or "DEGRADED" for a NAS-based file system File System Used Space Percentage: Triggers an incident when file system utilization grows beyond defined thresholds You can view these rules in the Monitoring tab for an OS: Of course, the default monitoring rules is that they apply to every file system associated with an OS instance. As a result, any issue with NAS accessibility or disk utilization will trigger an incident. This can cause incidents for file systems to be reported multiple times if the same shared storage is used by many assets, as shown in this screen shot: Depending on the level of control you'd like, there are a number of ways to fine tune incident reporting. Note that any changes to an asset's monitoring policy will detach it from the default, creating a new monitoring policy for the asset. If you'd like, you can extract a monitoring policy from an asset, which allows you to save it and apply the customized monitoring profile to other OS assets. Solution #1: Modify the Reporting Thresholds In some cases, you may want to modify the basic conditions for incident reporting in your file system. The changes you make to a default monitoring rule will apply to all of the file systems associated with your operating system. Selecting the File Systems Used Space Percentage entry and clicking the "Edit Alert Monitoring Rule Parameters" button opens a pop-up dialog which allows you to modify the rule. The first screen lets you decide when you will check for file system usage, and how long you will wait before opening an incident in Ops Center. By default, Ops Center monitors continuously and reports disk utilization issues which exist for more than 15 minutes. The second screen lets you define actual threshold values. By default, Ops Center opens a Warning level incident is utilization rises above 80%, and a Critical level incident for utilization above 95% Solution #2: Disable Incident Reporting for File System If you'd rather not report file system incidents, you can disable the monitoring rules altogether. In this case, you can select the monitoring rules and click the "Disable Alert Monitoring Rule(s)" button to open the pop-up confirmation dialog. Like the first solution, this option affects all file system monitoring. It allows you to completely disable incident reporting for NAS library status or file system space consumption. Solution #3: Create New Monitoring Rules for Specific File Systems If you'd like to have the greatest flexibility when monitoring file systems, you can create entirely new rules. Clicking the "Add Alert Monitoring Rule" (the icon with the green plus sign) opens a wizard which allows you to define a new rule.  This rule will be based on a threshold, and will be used to monitor operating system assets. We'd like to add a rule to track disk utilization for a specific file system - the /nfs-guest directory. To do this, we specify the following attribute FileSystemUsages.name=/nfs-guest.usedSpacePercentage The value of name in the attribute allows us to define a specific NFS shared directory or file system... in the case of this OS, we could have chosen any of the values shown in the File Systems Utilization chart at the beginning of this article. usedSpacePercentage lets us define a threshold based on the percentage of total disk space used. There are a number of other values that we could use for threshold-based monitoring of FileSystemUsages, including freeSpace freeSpacePercentage totalSpace usedSpace usedSpacePercentage The final sections of the screen allow us to determine when to monitor for disk usage, and how long to wait after utilization reaches a threshold before creating an incident. The next screen lets us define the threshold values and severity levels for the monitoring rule: If historical data is available, Ops Center will display it in the screen. Clicking the Apply button will create the new monitoring rule and active it in your monitoring policy. If you combine this with one of the previous solutions, you can precisely define which file systems will generate incidents and notifications. For example, this monitoring policy has the default "File System Used Space Percentage" rule disabled, but the new rule reports ONLY on utilization for the /nfs-guest directory. • Bundler isn't loading gems

  I have been having a problem with using Bundler and being able to access my gems without having to require them somewhere, as config.gem used to do that for me (as far as I know). same goes for any other gem. • Personal Project - Next practical language/tech to learn

  I'm working on a personal project doing some finance analysis. It's a totally new field for me, and I'm really having fun with it so far, plus working in the high-level language arena is a great break from my embedded systems daytime work. I have a MySQL backend on a non-local server with a pile of stock data. My task now is to do some analysis of the stocks and produce something approximating a useful result. There are a couple technical difficulties. (1) I have a lot of records. To be precise, I believe I'm near 100K records right now, and this number grows by 6.1K each weekday. I need to create a way to rummage through these fields and do data analysis - based on a given computation, go look at this other set. Fine and dandy, nothing too outre. But this means I could really use a straightforward API for talking to MySQL. (2) Ideally, it runs on OS X 10.4.11. No Windows/Linux machine at home. (3) I can use PHP, C++, Perl, etc. I even have an R installation. I'm pretty flexible with stuff, so long as it runs on OS X. (Lots of options here, pick water, H20, or dihydrogen monoxide ;-) ) (4)Lack of hassle. While I like clever and fun ways of doing things, I'm trying to get some analysis done, not spend ten hours doing installation work and scratching my head figuring out a theoretical syntax question needed to spout out "hello world". What's the question? I'd like to dig into something different than my usual PHP/C++/C toolset. I'm looking for recommendations for languages/technologies that will assist me and meet the above requirements. In particular, I've heard a lot of buzz about F# and Python on SO. I've used CLISP for small problems before, and kinda liked it. I'm seeking opinions about those in particular. edit:since I rent the DB server and have a limited amount of CPU time online, I'm trying to do the analysis on a local machine.

• Copy android.R.layout to my project

  Good advice from CommonWare and Steve H but it's not as easy to me as I first thought. Based on their advice I'm trying to copy android.R.layout to my project to ensure consistency. How do you do this? I looked in Eclipse's Package Explorer and under Android 1.5android.jarandroidR.classRlayout and find R$layout.class. Do I copy the code out of there into my own class? • Copy a file to a new directory path in DOS

  How can I copy a file using DOS commands into a directory structure that may not yet exist? I need to be able to force the creation of the directory path to the target file location if that location doesn't already exist. For example, there is already a file.txt in this location: C:\file.txt And I want to copy it to C:\example\new\path\to\copy\of\file\file.txt but at this time C:\example\ and all the subdirectories may or may not yet exist. Basically, I am looking for a "copy and create the target path if necessary" command. What would you recommend is the best way to achieve this?

  Hi, I have 3 Windows 2008 Standard servers in my system with no domain controller. Two of the servers are running a NLB cluster and the third server is a file server that the web servers connect to. I want to store my source code on the file server and point the IIS config to the network file share. The web sites also need access to a file share on the file server. I was able to share the network drive and access while logged into either of the web servers but my web apps are unable to access the file share - I assume due to permissions. Does anybody know the correct way to do this? Thanks, Chris

• Delete file then run file at startup

  I'm running the music player Foobar2000 through Wine at startup. For some reason when I shutdown Ubuntu the Foobar2000 process is ended abnormally in Wine and when it runs next time I get an annoying "start in safe mode?" message. Not a huge problem, but I'd like it fixed. The safe mode message only appears if a file called "running" is present when Foobar2000 starts (if it isn't deleted when closed properly). So by deleting "running" then starting Foobar2000, the message doesn't appear. I thought it would be easy enough to enter this as a startup command, however it doesn't want to work. The command I am using is rm '/home/henry/.wine/drive_c/users/henry/Application Data/foobar2000/running';'/home/henry/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/foobar2000/foobar2000.exe' which works fine if I just run it from terminal, the file is deleted then foobar2000 runs. Does anyone know why this isn't working at startup? Also, will this run with a terminal visible? How can I make just the gui appear? Thanks

But this is for AVI only. I use some wine apps (uTorrent, Soulseek, Eudora, to name a few) that can launch a wide range of files. Email attachments, for example, can be JPG, DOC, PDF, PPS... its impossible (and not desirable) to track down all possible file types that one may receive in an email or download in a torrent. So I neeed a solution to be more generic and broad. I need the file association to honor whatever native app is currently configured. And I want this to be done for all file types configured in my system. I've already figured out how to make the solution generic. Simply replacing the launched app in .reg for winebrowser, like this: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf] @="PDFfile" "Content Type"="application/pdf" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PDFfile\Shell\Open\command] @="C:\\windows\\system32\\winebrowser.exe \"%1\"" Ive tested this and it works correctly. Since winebrowser uses xdg-open as a backend, and converts my windows path to a Unix one, the correct (Linux) app is launched. So I need a "batch" updater to wine's registry, sort of a wine-update-associations script that I can run whenever a new app is installed. Maybe a tool that can: List all Mime Types types in my system that have a default, installed app associated Extract all the needed info (glob, mime type, etc) Generate the .REG file in the above format The tricky part is: i've searched a LOT to find info about how association is done in Ubuntu 10.10 onwards, and documentation is scarce and confusing, to say the least. Freedesktop.org has no complete spec, and even Gnome docs are obsolete. So far I've gathered 4 files that contain association info, but im clueless on which (or why) to use, or how to use them to generate the .reg file: ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list ~/.local/share/applications/miminfo.cache /usr/share/applications/miminfo.cache /etc/gnome/defaults.list Any help, script or explanation would be greatly appreciated!
