  • Windows 7: This notification icon is currently not active

    Some time this week, without any major change done to one of my x64 Windows 7 computers, the Media eject icon goes missing in the systray taskbar area. When I attempt to reset the notification settings, i see this "This notification icon is currently not active" info warning Initially KB945011 managed to restore the icon after a reboot. But now it appears to have disappeared again. It seems to have disappeared (cannot really confirm) after I unlock the physical logon session (which was previously rerouted to a virtual Remote Desktop session). Anybody have knowledge on possible causes to this missing behaviour? UPDATE 1 Feb 11 It seems that happens often when I remote desktop to the computer, I see it from the remote screen, but when i unlock the screen physically, it disappears. It would reappear when I connect to remote desktop again. Hmmmmm.

  • Internet Explorer 9 won't start

    I have installed Internet Explorer 9. Now when I try to start it the application window flashes up briefly before closing again. What's wrong? I have tried to uninstall IE9, then the problem persisted with IE8. I reinstalled IE9 and the problem is still there. I have tried to use inetcpl.cpl to reset all settings and turn on software rendering, but it didn't help. I can't find any error messages in the Event logs, and the crash doesn't give any kind of error message. My system is Windows 7 Enterprise with SP1.

    Hi, Can anybody detail some approach on how to save private data in social websites like facebook, etc. They cant save all the updates and friends list in clear text format because of privacy issues. So how do they actually save it? Hashing all the data with user password so that only a valid session view it is one possibility. But I think there are some problem with this approach and there must be some better solution.

  • Google and Gmail only work on one laptop and not the other two

    We have Comcast internet and everything was fine until recently. I am currently using my father-in-law's PC, and Gmail, Paypal, and Google all work fine. They don't work on my laptop or my husband's. We've reset the router/modem several times and nothing works. So we unplugged the main line outside and it fixed it for two weeks but now it's back to being stupid again. We've tried everything else and nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

  • USB-keyboard & mouse powered off in windows-7

    I have a problem with a pc where usb devices are not getting any power as soon as windows starts up (it works in preboot). This pc has no ps/2, so there is no chance for input, also not in secure boot mode. I "tidied up" using sysinternals autostart, so there is a chance I messed something up here, although I'm quite sure I only deleted some old printer drivers from autostart. I do not know how to reset this, I cant even log in because there is no input possible. I could use a linux live cd, but I don't know what to do there because there is no sysinternals from linux into a not running windows... To make things even worse, I have the windows installation completely encrypted with truecrypt, so I haven't even tried windows recovery cd yet. There is no loss of data since I can access the disc with a live-linux, I only want to use it again without resetting up everything. Any suggestions?

    I'm following this guide to reset my mysql root password (I'm on ubuntu). When I kill the mysqld process, it immediately gets resurrected. The parent process ID is 1.   • Mac OS X Server 10.6.6 "disables" CPU in VMware Fusion

    I installed Mac OS X Server 10.6.0 in VMWare Fusion the other night and it worked perfectly, until I ran Software Update. I upgraded to 10.6.6 through the combo updater, and now when I start the VM it says: "The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point." I've switched the operating system in the options to OS X Server 32bit, 64bit, and even to Windows 7, and nothing has worked. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Why does every thread in my application use a different hibernate session?

    Hi, I have a web-application which uses hibernate and for some reason every thread (httprequest or other threads related to queueing) uses a different session. I've implemented a HibernateSessionFactory class which looks like this: public class HibernateSessionFactory { private static final ThreadLocal<Session> threadLocal = new ThreadLocal<Session>(); private static Configuration configuration = new AnnotationConfiguration(); private static org.hibernate.SessionFactory sessionFactory; static { try { configuration.configure(configFile); sessionFactory = configuration.buildSessionFactory(); } catch (Exception e) {} } private HibernateSessionFactory() {} public static Session getSession() throws HibernateException { Session session = (Session) threadLocal.get(); if (session == null || !session.isOpen()) { if (sessionFactory == null) { rebuildSessionFactory();//This method basically does what the static init block does } session = (sessionFactory != null) ? sessionFactory.openSession(): null; threadLocal.set(session); } return session; } //More non relevant methods here. Now from my testing it seems that the threadLocal member is indeed initialized only once when the class is first loaded by the JVM but for some reason when different threads access the getSession() method they use different sessions. When a thread first accesses this class (Session) threadLocal.get(); will return null but as expected all other access requests will yeild the same session. I'm not sure how this can be happening as the threadLocal variable is final and the method threadLocal.set(session) is only used in the above context (which I'm 99.9% sure has to yeild a non null session as I would have encountered a NullPointerException at a different part of my app).   • what's POST code 18 / can I run an ASRock P55 Pro + Core i3 530?

    When I switch my newly built PC on, the fans start up, but I get nothing on the monitor, and the POST display on the motherboard runs quickly through various codes and then stops at code 18, which does not appear in the manual (the list there seems identical to this one). This lasts about 10 seconds, after which the machine shuts down. After a pause (also about 10 seconds) it starts up again, and this repeats until I cut the power. Interestingly, when I push the reset button, it stops at POST code 16 (which is also not listed in the manual). Does anyone have information about the meaning of those codes? Motherboard: ASRock P55 Pro CPU: Intel Core i3 530 Graphics Card: Sapphire HHD 5750 Does anyone have experience with that Motherboard/CPU combination? It says on the packaging and in the manual that it's only compatible with Core i5 and i7 (no mention of i3), but on the maker's product page, the i3 is listed as compatible as well.

  • how did my laptop lose daylight savings time on power loss?

    it was an old laptop that may or may not have dead CMOS battery (at least it had time reset to 0 when I dusted it off). So, it was plugged into power for awhile without the main battery and the clock was correct. Then there was a power outage. When I subsequently turned it on, surprise-surprise, it had one hour off correct time. So the clock apparently kept running during the outage, but daylight savings time info vanished (from disk? where is it stored?) How come?

    I definitely know how to change the home page in Internet Explorer (Tools -> Options -> General). The problem is, no matter what I put there, it never changes. Stop/restart Internet Explorer and the old home page is back. I did some research to see if there is a registry key that I could tweak to get the home page to set properly. I changed the start page registry key and refreshed the view and the start page key (without even restarting regedit) was reset back to its original value. Now I'm a little concerned.     I have a Windows 2003 Server which has a number or RAS Connections to some of our customers. Occasionally the connections go into a mode where there are connected, but not working. Disconnecting and reconnecting solves the problem. However sometimes you can not disconnect as I get the following error message It is not possible to disconnect at this time. The connection is currently busy with a connect or disconnect operation. There are no visible connection dialog boxes when this message occurs and I usually end up having to restart the server which obviously affects all the other users. I know that if you have a service that is stuck 'stopping' you can just kill it. Is there anything similar that you can do to reset a ras connection?
