  • how to get the PageFormat from a Java.awt.print.PrinterJob

    - by Alex
    Hi, I'm trying to use the PageFormat information to modify my javax.swing based printout prior to printing it. I am stumped as to how I can get the PageFormat from the PrintJob (which is obtained using getPrinterJob() and printDialog()). I know there is the getPageFormat method, but I can't figure out how to get the PrintRequestAttributeSet (which is not the printJob.getPrintService().getPrintAttributes()). Honestly, all I really want to know is the width and height of the page. Any ideas on how I can do that? Thanks.

  • Android Java error handling XML file

    - by Paul
    I'm using SAX and XML reader to read XML weather info from the web and it works fine if the page exists. But if for instance the user inputs an invalid city, zip etc the XML page that gets read from is empty and the app force closes with nullpointerexception. The area that generates the error is here right at open inputstream. Any suggestions?: SAXParserFactory spf = SAXParserFactory.newInstance(); SAXParser sp = null; try { sp = spf.newSAXParser(); } catch (ParserConfigurationException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } catch (SAXException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } /* Get the XMLReader of the SAXParser we created. */ XMLReader xr = null; try { xr = sp.getXMLReader(); } catch (SAXException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } /* Create a new ContentHandler and apply it to the XML-Reader*/ WeatherHandler myExampleHandler = new WeatherHandler(); xr.setContentHandler(myExampleHandler); /* Parse the xml-data from our URL. */ try { xr.parse(new InputSource(url.openStream())); parsedWeatherDataSet = myExampleHandler.getParsedData(); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } catch (SAXException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } return parsedWeatherDataSet.toString();

  • What does this java output mean?!

    - by Phil
    public class Arrys { private int[] nums; //Step 3 public Arrys (int arrySize) { nums = new int[arrySize]; } public int [] getNums (){ return nums; } } Test class: public class TestArrys { public static void main(String args[]) { //Step 4 Arrys arry = new Arrys(10); System.out.println("\nStep4 "); for(int index = 0; index < arry.getNums().length; index++) { System.out.print(arry.getNums()); } } } It's incredibly simple, that is why I think I'm doing something fundamentally wrong. All I want is to display the value of the array. This is what I get back. I am totally lost, there is nothing in my book that explains this nor does googling it help. Step4 [I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440[I@1ac88440

  • java multiple connections between server and one client

    - by user1507128
    I'm trying to make like a skype-instant messager, my idea for it is to have one server which handles multiple connections for the clients. What I now have is a friend list etc, but now I want to create Threads both for server and client to handle a conversation. The problem is that I need multiple connections between a server and one client for every conversation(I think). but i dont think it's possible. Does someone have another way for doing this or maybe a way to make multiple connections between the server and a client? Thanks for helping me out PS: English is not my main language so please excuse me for my grammar.

  • Java interface 'interview'-style problem

    - by Codenotguru
    Problem/Task: Write an interface with one method and two classes that implement this interface. Now write a main method with an array that holds an instance of each class. Using a for-each loop, invoke the method upon each item. Is this an interview question? (I'm not sure if the author meant to post this as a question or was looking for an answer to the above.)

  • [Java] Listening for TCP and UDP requests on the same port

    - by user339328
    I am writing a Client/Server set of programs Depending on the operation requested by the client, I use make TCP or UDP request. Implementing the client side is straight-forward, since I can easily open connection with any protocol and send the request to the server-side. On the servers-side, on the other hand, I would like to listen both for UDP and TCP connections on the same port. Moreover, I like the the server to open new thread for each connection request. I have adopted the approach explained in: link text I have extended this code sample by creating new threads for each TCP/UDP request. This works correctly if I use TCP only, but it fails when I attempt to make UDP bindings. Please give me any suggestion how can I correct this. tnx

  • Long list of if statements in Java

    - by steve
    Hi, Sorry I can't find a question answering this, I'm almost certain someone else has raised it before. My problem is that I'm writing some system libraries to run embedded devices. I have commands which can be sent to these devices over radio broadcasts. This can only be done by text. inside the system libraries I have a thread which handles the commands which looks like this if (value.equals("A") { doCommandA() } else if (value.equals"B") { doCommandB() } else if etc. The problem is that there are a lot of commands to it will quickly spiral to something out of control. Horrible to look out, painful to debug and mind boggling to understand in a few months time.

  • Having access to a private variable from other classes in Java

    - by Crystal
    If I want to create a form that adds people to a List, how do I have access to that List from another class? Where would I define that List so other classes can access the members, the size, etc? For example, if I have Class Foo that has the GUI for my form, along with buttons to add and remove people to the List, it would make sense to me to declare the List as a private instance variable of Class Foo. But then if I have another class, Class Bar, how does it get the values that are currently in that List to update some other graphical components? Or is that the wrong place to declare the List in general? Thanks.

  • Why fill() and copy() of Collections in java is implemented this way

    - by Priyank Doshi
    According to javadoc... Collections.fill() is written as below : public static <T> void fill(List<? super T> list, T obj) { int size = list.size(); if (size < FILL_THRESHOLD || list instanceof RandomAccess) { for (int i=0; i<size; i++) list.set(i, obj); } else { ListIterator<? super T> itr = list.listIterator(); for (int i=0; i<size; i++) { itr.next(); itr.set(obj); } } } Its easy to understand why they didn't use listIterator for if (size < FILL_THRESHOLD || list instanceof RandomAccess) condition as of RandomAccess. But whats the use of size < FILL_THRESHOLD in above? I mean is there any significant performance benefit over using iterator for size>=FILL_THRESHOLD and not for size < FILL_THRESHOLD ? I see the same approach for Collections.copy() also : public static <T> void copy(List<? super T> dest, List<? extends T> src) { int srcSize = src.size(); if (srcSize > dest.size()) throw new IndexOutOfBoundsException("Source does not fit in dest"); if (srcSize < COPY_THRESHOLD || (src instanceof RandomAccess && dest instanceof RandomAccess)) { for (int i=0; i<srcSize; i++) dest.set(i, src.get(i)); } else { ListIterator<? super T> di=dest.listIterator(); ListIterator<? extends T> si=src.listIterator(); for (int i=0; i<srcSize; i++) { di.next(); di.set(si.next()); } } } FYI: private static final int FILL_THRESHOLD = 25; private static final int COPY_THRESHOLD = 10;

  • Multiple uses of "this" keyword in Java

    - by frodosamoa
    So, I have this. It compares two card decks and if they are the same the result is true. public boolean equals ( Object obj ) { boolean result = true; for (int i = 0; i < 52; i++) { if (this.cardAt(i) = this2.cardlist(i)) { result = true; } else { result = false; } } } I would like to be able to compare two random card decks, if you will. But I don't know how to compare two different ones using "this . I simply wrote "this2" to replace another instance of "this". What could I do to replace this "this2" to still be able to compare two card decks?

  • How to transform huge xml files in java?

    - by fx42
    As the title says it, I have a huge xml file (GBs) <root> <keep> <stuff> ... </stuff> <morestuff> ... </morestuff> </keep> <discard> <stuff> ... </stuff> <morestuff> ... </morestuff> </discard> </root> and I'd like to transform it into a much smaller one which retains only a few of the elements. My parser should do the following: 1. Parse through the file until a relevant element starts. 2. Copy the whole relevant element (with children) to the output file. go to 1. step 1 is easy with SAX and impossible for DOM-parsers. step 2 is annoying with SAX, but easy with the DOM-Parser or XSLT. so what? - is there a neat way to combine SAX and DOM-Parser to do the task?

    This is a totally newbie question. I'm running Eclipse on Ubuntu. I created a test project that I want to compile to an executable (whataver the linux equivalent is of a Windows .exe file). Here's the contents of my program: public class MyTest { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("You passed in: " + args[0]); } } I want to know how to compile it and then how to execute it from the command line. Thanks!

  • Java Multi threading - Avoid duplicate request processing

    - by seawaves
    I have following multi threaded environment scenario - Requests are coming to a method and I want to avoid the duplicate processing of concurrent requests coming. As multiple similar requests might be waiting for being processed in blocked state. I used hashtable to keep track of processed request, but it will create memory leaks, so how should keep track of processed request and avoid the same requests to be processed which may be in blocking state.

  • Java using generics with lists and interfaces

    - by MirroredFate
    Ok, so here is my problem: I have a list containing interfaces - List<Interface> a - and a list of interfaces that extend that interface: List<SubInterface> b. I want to set a = b. I do not wish to use addAll() or anything that will cost more memory as what I am doing is already very cost-intensive. I literally need to be able to say a = b. I have tried List<? extends Interface> a, but then I cannot add Interfaces to the list a, only the SubInterfaces. Any suggestions? EDIT I want to be able to do something like this: List<SubRecord> records = new ArrayList<SubRecord>(); //add things to records recordKeeper.myList = records; The class RecordKeeper is the one that contains the list of Interfaces (NOT subInterfaces) public class RecordKeeper{ public List<Record> myList; }
