  • JavaScript and PHP filename coding conventions

    - by Tower
Hi, I would like to know the popular ways of naming files in JavaScript and PHP development. I am working on a JS+PHP system, and I do not know how to name my files. Currently I do for JS: framework/ framework/widget/ framework/widget/TextField.js (Framework.widget.TextField()) Framework.js (Framework()) So, my folders are lowercase and objects CamelCase, but what should I do when the folder/namespace requires more than one word? And what about PHP? jQuery seems to follow: jquery.js jquery.ui.js jquery.plugin-name.js so that it is jquery(\.[a-z0-9-])*\.js but ExtJS follows completely different approach. Douglas Crockford only gives us details about his preference for syntax conventions.

  • How do you measure latency in low-latency environments?

    - by Ajaxx
Here's the setup... Your system is receiving a stream of data that contains discrete messages (usually between 32-128 bytes per message). As part of your processing pipeline, each message passes through two physically separate applications which exchange the data using a low-latency approach (such as messaging over UDP) or RDMA and finally to a client via the same mechanism. Assuming you can inject yourself at any level, including wire protocol analysis, what tools and/or techniques would you use to measure the latency of your system. As part of this, I'm assuming that every message that is delivered to the system results in a corresponding (though not equivalent) message being pushed through the system and delivered to the client. The only tool that I've seen on the market like this is TS-Associates TipOff. I'm sure that with the right access you could probably measure the same information using a wire analysis tool (ala wireshark) and the right dissectors, but is this the right approach or are there any commodity solutions that I can use?

  • Can't print elements in a DIV tag

    - by Mckenzi
    I am using a Drag-able and re-sizeable DIV's in this HTML file. Where the user will place the DIV tag to his desired place in a main parent DIV tag. Now I want to print this main DIV tag, but the problem is that the code which I'm using to PRINT this main DIV is printing in a sequence, like not the way user has arranged the DIV's. Also it doesn't take up the main DIV background IMAGE. here is the code. JAVASCRIPT & CSS <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="byrei-dyndiv_0.5.css"> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://jqueryjs.googlecode.com/files/jquery-1.3.1.min.js" > </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="byrei-dyndiv_1.0rc1.js"></script> <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"> function change(boxid,divtoaffect) { content = document.getElementById("" + boxid + "").value.replace(/\n/g, '<br>'); document.getElementById(divtoaffect).innerHTML = content; } function select1() { test=document.getElementById("changeMe"); test.style.backgroundImage="url('Sunset.jpg')"; } function select2() { test=document.getElementById("changeMe"); test.style.backgroundImage="url('Blue hills.jpg')"; } function PrintElem(elem) { Popup($(elem).text()); } function Popup(data) { var mywindow = window.open('', 'my div', 'height=400,width=600'); mywindow.document.write('<html><head><title>my div</title>'); /*optional stylesheet*/ //mywindow.document.write('<link rel="stylesheet" href="main.css" type="text/css" />'); mywindow.document.write('</head><body >'); mywindow.document.write(data); mywindow.document.write('</body></html>'); mywindow.document.close(); mywindow.print(); return true; } // Print DIV function printContent(id){ str=document.getElementById(id).innerHTML newwin=window.open('','printwin','left=100,top=100,width=400,height=400') newwin.document.write('<HTML>\n<HEAD>\n') newwin.document.write('<TITLE>Print Page</TITLE>\n') newwin.document.write('<script>\n') newwin.document.write('function chkstate(){\n') newwin.document.write('if(document.readyState=="complete"){\n') newwin.document.write('window.close()\n') newwin.document.write('}\n') newwin.document.write('else{\n') newwin.document.write('setTimeout("chkstate()",2000)\n') newwin.document.write('}\n') newwin.document.write('}\n') newwin.document.write('function print_win(){\n') newwin.document.write('window.print();\n') newwin.document.write('chkstate();\n') newwin.document.write('}\n') newwin.document.write('<\/script>\n') newwin.document.write('</HEAD>\n') newwin.document.write('<BODY onload="print_win()">\n') newwin.document.write(str) newwin.document.write('</BODY>\n') newwin.document.write('</HTML>\n') newwin.document.close() } </script> </head> <body> <style type="text/css"> #output1,#output2 ,#output3 { width: 300px; word-wrap: break-word; border: solid 1px black; } </style> HTML <div style="width:650px;height:300px;" id="changeMe" > <table cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="100%" style="margin:auto;"> <tr> <td><div class="dynDiv_moveDiv" id="output1" style="font-weight:bold;height:20px;margin-top:40px;"> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_tl"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_tr"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_bl"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_br"></div> </div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td><div class="dynDiv_moveDiv" id="output2" style="height:40px;margin-top:30px;"> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_tl"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_tr"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_bl"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_br"></div> </div></td> </tr> <tr> <td><div class="dynDiv_moveDiv" id="output3" style="height:50px;margin-top:40px;"> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_tl"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_tr"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_bl"></div> <div class="dynDiv_resizeDiv_br"></div> </div></td> </tr> </table> </div> <tr> <td align="center"><input type="button" value="Print Div" onClick="printContent('changeMe')" /> </td> </tr>

  • Allow native DLL to output stdout / stderr in c# console application

    - by xaw
I have a native DLL which outputs via stdout / stderr. I have a C# console application which calls this DLL and outputs binary data to a parent C# application which started the C# console exe, processing stdout / stderr. Currently when I call the C# exe it works just fine (the DLL hooks up to the stdout of my console application and puts its data in just fine). Is this by design (and shouldn't be broken in future .NET framework versions)? Are there limitations on my managed code's deployment with this strategy (full-trust, permission requirements, GAC issues, etc)? I can't seem to find any documentation about stdout with a managed exe and an unmanaged dll both putting data in that standard output on MSDN. Thanks,

  • Which one should I choose AMQP or XMPP for real-time browser-based game?

    - by Devyn
Hi, I'm choosing between AMQP (RabbitMQ) vs XMPP (eJabberd) for my browser-based flash-free javascript powered real-time turn-based game. I don't know much about AMQP and XMPP protocol. I would like to use PHP for user-authorization and some data store-retrieve with MySQL. As far as I found out, RabbitMQ has PHP clients but eJabberd not. What I understood is javascript client calls PHP script and manipulate necessary processing and then pass to AMQP or XMPP server to pass the data to opponent player. There is a good book 'Pro XMPP Programming with JS and jQuery' from Wrox but there is no example with PHP. So following are my questions. 1) Which protocol is suit for my game? 2) Shall I choose RabbitMQ just for it's PHP client support?

  • IPC speed and compare

    - by Lily
I am trying to implement a real-time application which involves IPC across different modules. The modules are doing some data intensive processing. I am using message queue as the backbone(Activemq) for IPC in the prototype, which is easy(considering I am a totally IPC newbie), but it's very very slow. Here is my situation: I have isolated the IPC part so that I could change it other ways in future. I have 3 weeks to implement another faster version. ;-( IPC should be fast, but also comparatively easy to pick up I have been looking into different IPC approaches: socket, pipe, shared memory. However, I have no experience in IPC, and there is definitely no way I could fail this demo in 3 weeks... Which IPC will be the safe way to start with? Thanks. Lily

  • C# Localization - unexpected behaviour

    - by vikp
Hi, I have the following line of code: <%= Html.Label((string) GetLocalResourceObject("Label_Email")) %> This generates a label within an HTML page. In the local resource file I have the following entry: Name: Label_Email Value:Email For some very strange reason when I load the page in the browser, it generates an HTML label with a value of "Email Address" instead of "Email". This is a serious problem for me because I need to localize the application and not have english word "address". When I replace Value in the local resouce file with "Email " (notice extra space), everything works fine, but this is a hack and I need to understand why my application is behaving this way. Thank you

  • Limit Connections with semaphores

    - by Robert
    I'm trying to limit the number of connections my server will accept using semaphores, but when running, my code doesn't seem to make this restriction - am I using the semaphore correctly? eg. I have hardcoded the number of permit as 2, but I can connect an unlimited number of clients... public class EServer implements Runnable { private ServerSocket serverSocket; private int numberofConnections = 0; private Semaphore sem = new Semaphore(2); private volatile boolean keepProcessing = true; public EServer(int port) throws IOException { serverSocket = new ServerSocket(port); } @Override public void run() { while (keepProcessing) { try { sem.acquire(); Socket socket = serverSocket.accept(); process(socket, getNextConnectionNumber()); } catch (Exception e) { } finally { sem.release(); } } closeIgnoringException(serverSocket); } private synchronized int getNextConnectionNumber() { return ++numberofConnections; } // processing related methods }

  • Is it worth it to learn an esoteric programming language?

    - by Thomas Owens
Wikipedia: An esoteric programming language (sometimes shortened to esolang) is a programming language designed as a test of the boundaries of computer programming language design, as a proof of concept, or as a joke. There is usually no intention of the language being adopted for real-world programming. Such languages are often popular among hackers and hobbyists. This use of esoteric is meant to distinguish these languages from more popular programming languages. Some more popular languages may appear esoteric (in the usual sense of the word) to some, and though these could arguably be called "esoteric programming languages" too, this is not what is meant. I think it might be worth it, just to learn a new language and go through the process, although only if you don't have anything else to do (like a real project or learning a new real language). But what does the community think? Is there some value in these languages?

  • How Do I Convert text to a WAV file With Inaudible Waveform?

    - by Scott
I am trying to create an audio watermarking system. I figure the best solution is to create an audio file (WAV) based on a unique string of text and then combine this with the original wav. The part that makes this tricky (for me anyway) is: How do I convert the text string to a wav? How do I ensure that the resulting WAV form is inaudible (or at least barely noticeable to the listener). I would prefer this be done server side (via PHP, etc) but if the processing load isn't too much then would be ok with something in Flash or Javascript. I'd be willing to pay someone to create me a workable solution (complete source code that functions as described). Thanks, Scott!

  • Graphics/Vision Interesting Topics

    - by Myx
Hello: I would like to do an interesting project for a computer graphics course. I know that there is a lot of literature out there (i.e. SIGGRAPH conference papers). I have a very large range of interest with regard to computer graphics (i.e. image processing, 3D modeling, rendering, animation). However, I've only taken computer vision/graphics for 2 semesters and thus don't have too much background experience, except for the class projects that I had to do. I've been looking through SIGGRAPH papers trying to see if there is anything that will be of interest to me but the literature is extremely vast. I was wondering if anyone has any topic suggestions, anything interesting that you ran across that you could recommend. I would prefer to do something fun yet slightly challenging (not really interested in making a shooter game). If this question does not belong here, I apologize and please let me know where I should move it. Thanks!

  • Drupal setup for proofreaders - "Revision Moderation"

    - by Olav
I would like to have external proofreaders to work directly inside my Drupal site. Basically they should be able to create new revisions, annotate, comment etc without affecting what users see without my approval. Particularly the node might already be public. "Revision Moderation" module sounds a bit like what I want, but it seems not to be so much used, and I run into other modules like "Workflow". What is important for me: Possibility to work on content already published Easy for the proofreader, easy for me to direct her to the right location Other useful features such as comments (Like those balloons in Word), diffs etc (I guess I could work around (1) by copying the content)

  • Map Reduce Frameworks/Infrastructure

    - by Johannes Rudolph
Map Reduce is a pattern that seems to get a lot of traction lately and I start to see it manifest in one of my projects that is focused on an event processing pipeline (iPhone Accelerometer and GPS data). I needed to built a lot of infrastructure for this project, in fact it overweighs the logic code interacting with it by 2x. Some of the components I built where EventProcessors (with in- and output plus buffering, timing etc.), multiplexers and aggregators. This leads me to my question what the "common" required infrastrucutre for map reduce is. Since I am working with .Net a lot I can see map reduce infrastructure built into the Framework and language constructs. Functional languages support this paradigm per se. It seems every language can be used with map reduce, some have better support than others, others again are built around that concept (e.g. Go). And there are Frameworks like Apache Hadoop to support map reduce.

  • Reverse rendering of Urdu fonts

    - by Syed Muhammad Umair
I am working on a project that is based on Urdu language in Ubuntu platform. I'm using Python language and have almost achieved my task. The problem is that, the Urdu text is rendered in reverse order. For example, consider the word ??? (which means work) consisting of the three letters: ? , ? , and ? The output is rendered in reverse order as ??? consisting of the three letters: ?, ?, and ? When copying this text to Open Office or opening the generated XML file in Firefox, the generated result is absolutely desired. I Am using Python 2.6 IDLE, its working perfect with Windows platform, which clearly shows its not the problem of IDLE. Am working on TKINTER GUI library. How can this problem be solved?

  • Jetty 7 Continuations: How to *not* redispatch the request?

    - by Don Werve
I'm using Jetty 7 continuations to implement some asynchronous processing. What I'm trying to do is start off the continuation (via .suspend()), and then hand the continuation off to some other object that will compose the response, which works fine. But Jetty keeps redispatching the response (with isInitial = false) to the servlet, and I don't want or need that, because the response is being dealt with by some other object. So, I'd like to find a way to explicitly not redispatch the request on timeout or expire, because I'm using an event-driven series of callbacks to actually produce the response.

  • Beginner question: What is binding?

    - by JDelage
Hi, I was trying to understand the difference between early and late binding, and in the process realized that the concept of binding is nebulous to me. I think I understand that it relates to the way data-as-a-word-of-memory is linked to type-as-a-set-of-language-features but I am not sure those are the right concepts. Also, how does understanding this deeply help people become better programmers? Please note: This question is not "what is late v. early binding" or "what are the trade-offs between the 2". Those already exist here. Thanks, JDelage

  • How to sift idioms and set phrases apart from other common phrases using NLP techniques?

    - by hippietrail
What techniques exist that can tell the difference betwen plain common phrases such as "to the", "and the" and set phrases and idioms which have their own lexical meanings such as "pick up", "fall in love", "red herring", "dead end"? Are there techniques which are successful even without a dictionary, statistical methods HMMs train on large corpora for instance? Or are there heuristics such as ignoring or weighting down "promiscuous" words which can co-occur with just about any word versus words which occur either alone or in a specific limited set of idiomatic phrases? If there are such heuristics, how do we take into account set phrases and verbal phrases which do incorporate promiscuous words such as "up" in "beat up", "eat up", "sit up", "think up"? UPDATE I've found an interesting paper online: Unsupervised Type and Token Identi?cation of Idiomatic Expressions

  • Android Class which extends Dialog, how to clear TextViews before it is displayed

    - by wuntee
    I have a class that extends android.app.Dialog, the layout is done in an xml file, and the setup (button listeners, etc) is done on the onCreate method. My problem is that whenever the dialog is displayed, then dismissed, and displayed again, the Editable TextViews are still populated with the information that was displayed previously. What is the common way to clear these text fields? Remember - this is a separate class that extends Dialog - so there is no 'onDialogCreate' like Activity has. Or, perhaps I am extending the wrong class? There is just a lot of processing being done, and do not want to have all the code in the main Activity. I would like it to be in a separate Class. I tried to extend AlertDialog, but it does not create the border like Dialog does. Any help would be great. The dialog is shown via the Activity: protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id) { switch(id){ case DIALOG_NEW_SAFE: return(new NewSafeDialog(this)); default: return(null); } }

  • Should Python 2.6 on OS X deal with multiple easy-install.pth files in $PYTHONPATH?

    - by ahd
I am running ipython from sage and also am using some packages that aren't in sage (lxml, argparse) which are installed in my home directory. I have therefore ended up with a $PYTHONPATH of $HOME/sage/local/lib/python:$HOME/lib/python Python is reading and processing the first easy-install.pth it finds ($HOME/sage/local/lib/python/site-packages/easy-install.pth) but not the second, so eggs installed in $HOME/lib/python aren't added to the path. On reading the off-the-shelf site.py, I cannot for the life of me see why it's doing this. Can someone enlighten me? Or advise how to nudge Python into reading both easy-install.pth files? Consolidating both into one .pth file is a viable workaround for now, so this question is mostly for curiosity value.

  • Mysql stored procedures

    - by Richard M
Hello, I have a unique issue that I need advice on. I've been writing asp.net apps with SQL Server back ends for the past 10 years. During that time, I have also written some PHP apps, but not many. I'm going to be porting some of my asp.net apps to PHP and have run into a bit of an issue. In the Asp.net world, it's generally understood that when accessing any databases, using views or stored procedures is the preferred way of doing so. I've been reading some PHP/MySQL books and I'm beginning to get the impression that utilizing stored procedures in mysql is not advisable. I hesitate in using that word, advisable, but that's just the felling I get. So, the advice I'm looking for is basically, am I right or wrong? Do PHP developers use stored procedures at all? Or, is it something that is shunned? Thanks in advance.

  • Purpose of Trigraph sequences in C++?

    - by Kirill V. Lyadvinsky
According to C++'03 Standard 2.3/1: Before any other processing takes place, each occurrence of one of the following sequences of three characters (“trigraph sequences”) is replaced by the single character indicated in Table 1. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | trigraph | replacement | trigraph | replacement | trigraph | replacement | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ??= | # | ??( | [ | ??< | { | | ??/ | \ | ??) | ] | ??> | } | | ??’ | ˆ | ??! | | | ??- | ˜ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In real life that means that code printf( "What??!\n" ); will result in printing What| because ??! is a trigraph sequence that is replaced with the | character. My question is what purpose of using trigraphs? Is there any practical advantage of using trigraphs? UPD: In answers was mentioned that some European keyboards don't have all the punctuation characters, so non-US programmers have to use trigraphs in everyday life? UPD2: Visual Studio 2010 has trigraph support turned off by default.
