  • Kill overscan for ATI drivers?

    - by joeforker
I have a dual-boot Windows 7 64 bit/Linux 64 bit machine that uses ATI's Catalyst drivers. Sometimes I attach it to a 1080p LCD TV over HDMI. ATI is daft enough to provide a border to account for overscan. I'm using an LCD TV. No overscan, or it looks like crap because the pixel mapping is not 1:1. How do I disable this driver "feature" in Windows? in Linux?

  • Login to a Windows 7 Computer with disabled Administrator account.

    - by sirlancelot
I just built a Windows 7 Image using sysprep and a custom answer file that's supposed to attach to our domain. However, it did not attach to the domain and so I have a computer that has been automatically setup via unattend.xml and is sitting at a login screen; with no active users (Administrator account says it is disabled). Is there a way I can activate the Administrator account and rescue this machine or do I have to rebuild it from scratch?

  • Java update "Failed to download required installation files."

    - by therefromhere
On my Windows 7 machine the Java update consistently fails with this error message. This seems to a common problem, does anyone have an insight into what's going wrong, and is there a fix for it other than either disabling the update check (seems a bad idea from a security point of view) or waiting for the nag message and then manually installing the new version (annoying and stupid from a usability point of view). Note that I did install the previous version manually (updating from 6.23 to 6.30 I think?), thinking that might resolve the issue, but no luck.

  • Good source of reviews of CULV machines?

    - by Jason Sundram
I'm potentially interested in acquiring a CULV machine. I like the idea of a netbook, but need a little more horsepower. So, of course, I need to obsess over a hundred different reviews first. Can you recommend some good sources of CULV reviews? Anandtech recently ran a roundup, but I'd prefer sites that have ongoing CULV coverage. Thanks!

  • How do I rename a network interface using netsh?

    - by Alex Angas
I'm building my first Windows 2008 Server Core machine (running R2) and want to rename the IPv4 network interfaces to something more meaningful. It seems most likely that this is done using netsh interface ipv4 set but looking through the help hasn't turned anything up. Could someone please advise the correct procedure?

  • Vagrant / puppet workflow

    - by slim
I'm new to puppet and vagrant, but I'm developing my own Puppet manifests intended to set up a vagrant box. That is, the puppet manifest is in my Vagrant directory on the host machine, and vagrant is invoking puppet -- there is no puppet server. The thing is, my workflow is: while(not working as desired) { vagrant destroy amend manifest vagrant up } ... and this means quite a lot of waiting around. What's a better way to work?

  • Vagrant reporting VirtualBox guest additions out of date

    - by DTest
Fairly new to Vagrant, so bear with me if I don't understand the process. I downloaded a CentOS box off http://www.vagrantbox.es/ Started it up running VirtualBox 4.2.4 and got this message: [default] The guest additions on this VM do not match the install version of VirtualBox! This may cause things such as forwarded ports, shared folders, and more to not work properly. If any of those things fail on this machine, please update the guest additions and repackage the box. Guest Additions Version: 4.0.8 VirtualBox Version: 4.2.4 So I used the vbguest plugin to update the guest additions, then repackaged the box as suggested. Having replaced the old box and loading it up I get the same message about guest additions being outdated, but vbguest reports that they are up to date (the automatic vbguest update is disabled in my Vagrantfile): Vagrant::Config.run do |config| config.vm.box = "centos56_64" config.vbguest.auto_update = false config.vbguest.no_remote = true end And the commands: dtest$ vagrant up [default] Importing base box 'centos56_64'... [default] The guest additions on this VM do not match the install version of VirtualBox! This may cause things such as forwarded ports, shared folders, and more to not work properly. If any of those things fail on this machine, please update the guest additions and repackage the box. Guest Additions Version: 4.0.8 VirtualBox Version: 4.2.4 [default] Matching MAC address for NAT networking... [default] Clearing any previously set forwarded ports... [default] Forwarding ports... [default] -- 22 => 2222 (adapter 1) [default] Creating shared folders metadata... [default] Clearing any previously set network interfaces... [default] Booting VM... [default] Waiting for VM to boot. This can take a few minutes. [default] VM booted and ready for use! [default] Mounting shared folders... [default] Virtualbox Guest Additions on host: 4.2.4 - guest's version is 4.2.4 Since they appear to be updated after an install, I could ignore the message. But is it possible to get rid of it?

  • Can not access IIS7 website externally - but can locally

    - by mactruck
I have 2 websites, site A running on port 80 and site B configured to run on port 8080. I can access site A no problem, but site B I can only access from the local web server machine. Externally it is not accessable, I have tried the url and ip and neither work. I have tried different configuring on port 8081 as a test and that didnt work either. What IIS settings should I look at?

  • Any Linux distro which is supported on EFI enabled XServe

    - by geoaxis
I am looking into installing Linux on a test XServe machine and see how it goes overall. We have our entire infrastructure on OSX and would like to move to Linux servers. Is there any distribution which has good support for XServe? Google search yielded nothing conclusive. I don't mind hacking around for personal use (compiling kernel, tweaking packages and configurations) but when running in production it's good to be cautious. Paying for commercial support is definitely an option.

  • Bought a 1U server, now can't find rails

    - by Paul Tomblin
I bought a 1U server used on eBay (a Supermicro motherboard, but branded "Asempra"), and I also bought a set of "Supermicro" rails, but unfortunately the rails didn't fit the server. The side of the server looks like: Can you tell me where I can find rails for this machine?

  • How to increase contrast of Windows 7 Menu Item highlight

    - by Barry Kelly
The Windows 7 menu item highlight effect is quite subtle - on my machine, menu items go from light grey to having a light blue shading. This makes it quite hard to tell at a glance which exact menu item is highlighted at any one time. You can see an example (from Firefox) here: Is there an easy way to increase the contrast of the menu item highlight effect, without having to go all-out to an over the top high-contrast color scheme?

  • 2nd Bootable partition P2V conversion

    - by Vendoran
I have a dual boot machine (Win7 RC and Win2008) and want to migrate one of the partitions (Win2008) into a Virtual Hard Drive and the be able to use it in VPC or Virtual Server (not Hyper-V). The ways I've seen via Linked Virtual Disks or WinImage take the entire physical drive instead of just the partition. Any ideas? Thanks in Advance, --Aaron

  • Logging in as the same user multiple times in Remote Desktop Windows Server 2008

    - by Little_Johnn
Quick question: I have a situation where I need to let multiple people on different PCs log into one server 2008 machine as administrator simultaneously over remote desktop. I have the CALs for it, it's just not set up correctly. When one user tries to log in, it boots the other out. What I need is to present to them a different session, just each as logged in as admin. Sorry for the slightly rambling post, I'm new here. Thanks!

  • Is it possible to check if a BIOS supports password entry for a self-encrypting SSD/harddrive?

    - by therobyouknow
I'm considering purchasing a SSD that has built-in hardware encryption / self-encrypting drive that provides its own full drive encryption. What can I do to check that the BIOS on my machine will support it? Background research so far Research on self-encrypting drives - good article below, but I would need to know if the BIOS can support it: http://www.computerweekly.com/feature/Self-encrypting-drives-SED-the-best-kept-secret-in-hard-drive-encryption-security

  • Losing internet connectivity on server after installing LogMeIn Hamachi (with server set as gateway node)

    - by Kim Jong-Un
Our domain controller (SBS 2003) completely lost internet and network connectivity yesterday after I remotely installed LogMeIn Hamachi on it and set it to be a gateway node- in an attempt to create a VPN link between the server and a remote site. I had to go in to the office to resolve the problem as, unsurprisingly, my own remote access to the server was also lost. I was only able to restore network connectivity by deleting a virtual network adapter Hamachi created when making the server the gateway node (called "Hamachi bridge" I believe), then rebooting the server. This is a repeatable problem. Every time I try to get this to work, it just takes the server offline. Why would this bridge affect regular TCP/IP connectivity on the NIC in this way? I have tried a "hub-and-spoke" configuration between the server and our PC at a remote site (server set as hub, remote site as spoke). This caused no such problems with general internet connectivity, and file transfer worked well between the two computers. However, there was a DNS issue with the VPN between the two sites- resulting in Active Directory not being able to communicate between them (could not log on using domain user accounts at remote site if they were not already cached on that machine). I only tried a "gateway" network as LogMeIn support told me: If you can get the Active Directory to work it would only be through a "Gateway" network type with the server acting as the Gateway Node. You would configure the gateway settings on the server in the Hamachi client on that machine to push whatever IP's/DNS settings you prefer and at that point AD would be able (all things being equal) communicate to the client node when it attaches. We do not have any ActiveDirectory configuration info as that's outside the scope of our support. I hope this helps. It would be fantastic if I could get Active Directory to work over a Hamachi VPN connection, without worrying about the server going offline in this way. Does anyone have any ideas how I should proceed, or any theories as to what is going on when I try to use the "gateway" network type? I want to try to narrow down what is going on here.
