  • Need help with SQL Query

    - by StackOverflowNewbie
    Say I have 2 tables: Person - Id - Name PersonAttribute - Id - PersonId - Name - Value Further, let's say that each person had 2 attributes (say, gender and age). A sample record would be like this: Person->Id = 1 Person->Name = 'John Doe' PersonAttribute->Id = 1 PersonAttribute->PersonId = 1 PersonAttribute->Name = 'Gender' PersonAttribute->Value = 'Male' PersonAttribute->Id = 2 PersonAttribute->PersonId = 1 PersonAttribute->Name = 'Age' PersonAttribute->Value = '30' Question: how do I query this such that I get a result like this: 'John Doe', 'Male', '30'

  • Replication - User defined table type not propogating to subscriber

    - by Aamod Thakur
    I created a User defined table type named tvp_Shipment with two columns (id and name) . generated a snapshot and the User defined table type was properly propogated to all the subscribers. I was using this tvp in a stored procedure and everything worked fine. Then I wanted to add one more column created_date to this table valued parameter.I dropped the stored procedure (from replication too) and also i dropped and recreated the User defined table type with 3 columns and then recreated the stored procedure and enabled it for publication When i generate a new snapshot, the changes in user defined table type are not propogated to the subscriber. The newly added column was not added to the subscription. the Error messages: The schema script 'usp_InsertAirSa95c0e23_218.sch' could not be propagated to the subscriber. • Query with many CASE statements - optimization

    - by Nemanja Vujacic
    Hi guys, I have one very dirty query that per sure can be optimized because there are so many CASE statements in it! SELECT (CASE pa.KplusTable_Id WHEN 1 THEN sp.sp_id WHEN 2 THEN fw.fw_id WHEN 3 THEN s.sw_Id WHEN 4 THEN id.ia_id END) as Deal_Id, max(CASE pa.KplusTable_Id WHEN 1 THEN sp.Trans_Id WHEN 2 THEN fw.Trans_Id WHEN 3 THEN s.Trans_Id WHEN 4 THEN id.Trans_Id END) as TransId_CurrentMax INTO #MaxRazlicitOdNull FROM #PotencijalniAktuelni pa LEFT JOIN kplus_sp sp (nolock) on sp.sp_id=pa.Deal_Id AND pa.KplusTable_Id=1 LEFT JOIN kplus_fw fw (nolock) on fw.fw_id=pa.Deal_Id AND pa.KplusTable_Id=2 LEFT JOIN dev_sw s (nolock) on s.sw_Id=pa.Deal_Id AND pa.KplusTable_Id=3 LEFT JOIN kplus_ia id (nolock) on id.ia_id=pa.Deal_Id AND pa.KplusTable_Id=4 WHERE isnull(CASE pa.KplusTable_Id WHEN 1 THEN sp.BROJ_TIKETA WHEN 2 THEN fw.BROJ_TIKETA WHEN 3 THEN s.tiket WHEN 4 THEN id.BROJ_TIKETA END, '')<>'' GROUP BY CASE pa.KplusTable_Id WHEN 1 THEN sp.sp_id WHEN 2 THEN fw.fw_id WHEN 3 THEN s.sw_Id WHEN 4 THEN id.ia_id END Because I have same condition couple times, do you have idea how to optimize query, make it simpler and better. • Guid Primary /Foreign Key dilemma SQL Server

    - by Xience
    Hi guys, I am faced with the dilemma of changing my primary keys from int identities to Guid. I'll put my problem straight up. It's a typical Retail management app, with POS and back office functionality. Has about 100 tables. The database synchronizes with other databases and receives/ sends new data. Most tables don't have frequent inserts, updates or select statements executing on them. However, some do have frequent inserts and selects on them, eg. products and orders tables. Some tables have upto 4 foreign keys in them. If i changed my primary keys from 'int' to 'Guid', would there be a performance issue when inserting or querying data from tables that have many foreign keys. I know people have said that indexes will be fragmented and 16 bytes is an issue. Space wouldn't be an issue in my case and apparently index fragmentation can also be taken care of using 'NEWSEQUENTIALID()' function. Can someone tell me, from there experience, if Guid will be problematic in tables with many foreign keys. I'll be much appreciative of your thoughts on it...

  • SQL - Multiple join conditions using OR?

    - by Brandi
    I have a query that is using multiple joins. The goal is to say "Out of table A, give me all the customer numbers in which you can match table A's EmailAddress with either email_to or email_from of table B. Ignore nulls, internal emails, etc.". It seems like it would be better to use an or condition in the join than multiple joins since it is the same table. When I try to use AND/OR it does not give the behaviour I expect... AND finishes in a reasonable time, but yields no results (I know that there are matches, so it must be some flaw in my logic) and OR never finishes (I have to kill it). Here is example code to illustrate the question: --my original query SELECT DISTINCT a.CustomerNo FROM A a WITH (NOLOCK) LEFT JOIN B e WITH (NOLOCK) ON a.EmailAddress = e.email_from RIGHT JOIN B f WITH (NOLOCK) ON a.EmailAddress = f.email_to WHERE a.EmailAddress NOT LIKE '%@mydomain.___' AND a.EmailAddress IS NOT NULL AND (e.email_from IS NOT NULL OR f.email_to IS NOT NULL) Here is what I tried, (I am attempting logical equivalence): SELECT DISTINCT a.CustomerNo FROM A a WITH (NOLOCK) LEFT JOIN B e WITH (NOLOCK) ON a.EmailAddress = e.email_from OR a.EmailAddress = e.email_to WHERE a.EmailAddress NOT LIKE '%@mydomain.___' AND a.EmailAddress IS NOT NULL AND (e.email_from IS NOT NULL OR e.email_to IS NOT NULL) So my question is two-fold: Why does having AND in the above query work in a few seconds and OR goes for minutes and never completes? What am I missing to make a logically equivalent statement that has only one join?

  • Getting SQL Syntax Error in INSERT INTO statement in Access 2010

I am getting a Syntax error when I get to the DoCmd.RunSQL line. Have been staring at this for quite a while trying to see if I have missed a comma or speech mark or something, but am hoping maybe another set of eyes will see my mistake. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    I have a very large table in my database and I am starting to get this error Could not allocate a new page for database 'mydatabase' because of insufficient disk space in filegroup 'PRIMARY'. Create the necessary space by dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. How do you fix this error? I don't understand the suggestions there.

  • Database schemas WAY out of sync - need to get up to date without losing data

    - by Zind
    The problem: we have one application that has a portion which is used by a very small subset of the total users, and that part of the application is running off of a separate database as well. In a perfect world, the schemas of the two databases would be synced up, but such is not the case. Some migrations have been run on the smaller database, most haven't; and furthermore, there is nothing such as revision number to be able to easily identify which have and which haven't. We would like to solve this quandary for future projects. During a discussion we've come up with the following possible plan of action, and I am wondering if anyone knows of any project which has already solved this problem: What we would like to do is create an empty database from the schema of the large fully-migrated database, and then move all of the data from the smaller non-migrated database into that empty one. If it makes things easier, it can probably be assumed for the sake of this problem specifically that no migrations have ever removed anything, only added. Else, if there are other known solutions, I'd like to hear them as well.

  • How can I limit the number of connections to an mssql server from my tomcat deployed java applicatio

    - by CJ
    Hi, I have an application that is deployed on tomcat on server A and sends queries to a huge variety of mssql databases on an server B. I am concerned that my application could overload this mssql database server and would like some way to preventing it making requests to connect to any database on that server if some arbitrary number of connections were already in existence and unclosed. I am looking at using connection pooling but am under the impression that this will only pool connections to a specific database on the mssql server, I want to control the total of these combined connections that will occur to many different databases (incidentally I can only find out the names of individual db's dynamically as they change day to day). Will connection pooling take care of this for me, are am I looking at this from the wrong perspective? I have no access to the configuration of the mssql server. Links to tutorials or working examples of your suggested solution are most welcome! Thanks, Caroline

  • SQL: GROUP BY after JOIN without overriding rows?

    - by krismeld
    I have a table of basketball leagues, a table af teams and a table of players like this: LEAGUES ID | NAME | ------------------ 1 | NBA | 2 | ABA | TEAMS: ID | NAME | LEAGUE_ID ------------------------------ 20 | BULLS | 1 21 | KNICKS | 2 PLAYERS: ID | TEAM_ID | FIRST_NAME | LAST_NAME | --------------------------------------------- 1 | 21 | John | Starks | 2 | 21 | Patrick | Ewing | Given a League ID, I would like to retrieve all the players' names and their team ID from all the teams in that league, so I do this: SELECT t.id AS team_id, p.id AS player_id, p.first_name, p.last_name FROM teams AS t JOIN players AS p ON p.team_id = t.id WHERE t.league_id = 1 which returns: [0] => stdClass Object ( [team_id] => 21 [player_id] => 1 [first_name] => John [last_name] => Starks ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [team_id] => 21 [player_id] => 2 [first_name] => Patrick [last_name] => Ewing ) + around 500 more objects... Since I will use this result to populate a dropdown menu for each team containing each team's list of players, I would like to group my result by team ID, so the loop to create these dropdowns will only have to cycle through each team ID instead of all 500+ players each time. But when I use the GROUP BY like this: SELECT t.id AS team_id, p.id AS player_id, p.first_name, p.last_name FROM teams AS t JOIN players AS p ON p.team_id = t.id WHERE t.league_id = 1 GROUP BY t.id it only returns one player from each team like this, overriding all the other players on the same team because of the use of the same column names. [0] => stdClass Object ( [team_id] => 21 [player_id] => 2 [first_name] => Patrick [last_name] => Ewing ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [team_id] => 22 [player_id] => 31 [first_name] => Shawn [last_name] => Kemp ) etc... I would like to return something like this: [0] => stdClass Object ( [team_id] => 2 [player_id1] => 1 [first_name1] => John [last_name1] => Starks [player_id2] => 2 [first_name2] => Patrick [last_name2] => Ewing +10 more players from this team... ) +25 more teams... Is it possible somehow?

  • Count problem in SQL when I want results from diffrent tabels

    - by Nicklas
    ALTER PROCEDURE GetProducts @CategoryID INT AS SELECT COUNT(tblReview.GroupID) AS ReviewCount, COUNT(tblComment.GroupID) AS CommentCount, Product.GroupID, MAX(Product.ProductID) AS ProductID, AVG(Product.Price) AS Price, MAX (Product.Year) AS Year, MAX (Product.Name) AS Name, AVG(tblReview.Grade) AS Grade FROM tblReview, tblComment, Product WHERE (Product.CategoryID = @CategoryID) GROUP BY Product.GroupID HAVING COUNT(distinct Product.GroupID) = 1 This is what the tabels look like: **Product** |**tblReview** | **tblComment** ProductID | ReviewID | CommentID Name | Description | Description Year | GroupID | GroupID Price | Grade | GroupID GroupID is name_year of a Product, ex Nike_2010. One product can have diffrent sizes for exampel: ProductID | Name | Year | Price | Size | GroupID 1 | Nike | 2010 | 50 | 8 | Nike_2010 2 | Nike | 2010 | 50 | 9 | Nike_2010 3 | Nike | 2010 | 50 | 10 | Nike_2010 4 | Adidas| 2009 | 45 | 8 | Adidas_2009 5 | Adidas| 2009 | 45 | 9 | Adidas_2009 6 | Adidas| 2009 | 45 | 10 | Adidas_2009 I dont get the right count in my tblReview and tblComment. If I add a review to Nike size 8 and I add one review to Nike size 10 I want 2 count results when I list the products with diffrent GroupID. Now I get the same count on Reviews and Comment and both are wrong. I use a datalist to show all the products with diffrent/unique GroupID, I want it to be like this: ______________ | | | Name: Nike | | Year: 2010 | | (All Sizes) | | x Reviews | | x Comments | | x AVG Grade | |______________| All Reviewcounts, Commentcounts and the Average of all products with the same GroupID, the Average works great.

  • When should I open and close a connection to SQL Server

    - by Martin
    I have a simple static class with a few methods in it. Each of those methods open a SqlConnection, query the database and close the connection. This way, I am sure that I always close the connection to the database, but on the other hand, I don't like to always open and close connection. Below is an example of what my methods look like. public static void AddSomething(string something) { using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection("...")) { connection.Open(); // ... connection.Close(); } } Considering that the methods are inside a static class, should I have a static member containing a single SqlConnection? How and when should I drop it? What are the best practices?

  • LINQ to Sql: Insert instead of Update

    - by Christina Mayers
    I am stuck with this problems for a long time now. Everything I try to do is insert a row in my DB if it's new information - if not update the existing one. I've updated many entities in my life before - but what's wrong with this code is beyond me (probably something pretty basic) I guess I can't see the wood for the trees... private Models.databaseDataContext db = new Models.databaseDataContext(); internal void StoreInformations(IEnumerable<EntityType> iEnumerable) { foreach (EntityType item in iEnumerable) { EntityType type = db.EntityType.Where(t => t.Room == item.Room).FirstOrDefault(); if (type == null) { db.EntityType.InsertOnSubmit(item); } else { type.Date = item.Date; type.LastUpdate = DateTime.Now(); type.End = item.End; } } } internal void Save() { db.SubmitChanges(); } Edit: just checked the ChangeSet, there are no updates only inserts. For now I've settled with foreach (EntityType item in iEnumerable) { EntityType type = db.EntityType.Where(t => t.Room == item.Room).FirstOrDefault(); if (type != null) { db.Exams.DeleteOnSubmit(type); } db.EntityType.InsertOnSubmit(item); } but I'd love to do updates and lose these unnecessary delete statements.

  • SQL using sum to count results of multiple subqueries

    - by asdas
    I have a table with 2 columns: integer and var char. I am given only the integer values but need to do work on the var char (string) values. Given an integer, and a list of other integers (no overlap), I want to find the string for that single integer. Then I want to take that string and do the INSTR command with that string, and all the other strings for all the other integers. Then I want the sum of all the INSTR so the result is one number. So lets say I have int x, and list y=[y0, y1, y2]. I want to do 3 INSTR commands like SUM(INSTR(string for x, string for y0), INSTR(string for x, string for y1), INSTR(string for x, string for y2)) I think im going in the wrong direction, this is what I have. Im not good with sub queries. SELECT SUM ( SELECT INSTR ( SELECT string FROM pages WHERE int=? LIMIT 1, ( SELECT string FROM pages WHERE id=? OR id=? OR id=? LIMIT 3 ) ) )

Edit: by "full control" i mean the ability to CRUD tables, views, sprocs etc Thanks

  • Copy Rows in a One to Many with LINQ (2 SQL)

    - by Refracted Paladin
    I have a table that stores a bunch of diagnosis for a single plan. When the users create a new plan I need to copy over all existing diagnosis's as well. I had thought to try the below but this is obviously not correct. I am guessing that I will need to loop through my oldDiagnosis part, but how? Thanks! My Attempt so far... public static void CopyPlanDiagnosis(int newPlanID, int oldPlanID) { using (var context = McpDataContext.Create()) { var oldDiagnosis = from planDiagnosi in context.tblPlanDiagnosis where planDiagnosi.PlanID == oldPlanID select planDiagnosi; var newDiagnosis = new tblPlanDiagnosi { PlanID = newPlanID, DiagnosisCueID = oldDiagnosis.DiagnosisCueID, DiagnosisOther = oldDiagnosis.DiagnosisOther, AdditionalInfo = oldDiagnosis.AdditionalInfo, rowguid = Guid.NewGuid() }; context.tblPlanDiagnosis.InsertOnSubmit(newDiagnosis); context.SubmitChanges(); } }

  • Entity Framework How to specify paramter type in generated SQL (SQLServer 2005) Nvarchar vs Varchar

    - by Gratzy
    In entity framework I have an Entity 'Client' that was generated from a database. There is a property called 'Account' it is defined in the storage model as: <Property Name="Account" Type="char" Nullable="false" MaxLength="6" /> And in the Conceptual Model as: <Property Name="Account" Type="String" Nullable="false" /> When select statements are generated using a variable for Account i.e. where m.Account == myAccount... Entity Framework generates a paramaterized query with a paramater of type NVarchar(6). The problem is that the column in the table is data type of char(6). When this is executed there is a large performance hit because of the data type difference. Account is an index on the table and instead of using the index I believe an Index scan is done. Anyone know how to force EF to not use Unicode for the paramater and use Varchar(6) instead?
