I'm looking for texts that give detailed treatment of assembly programming principles and don't use x86 as the target architecture. I haven't found any recent books like that, but I would expect that there were some good ones written in the 1970s and 1980s, when whole applications were still written in assembly. The architecture used should also be one of the cleaner designs, such as the 6502 or VAX.
I'm about to start working on a C# project. I'd like to buy VS 2010, but the only other member of the programming team is already using VS 2008. I'm concerned that having two different versions of VS in use will cause code compatibility issues. Is this a valid concern?
This is an interview question, and should concern about efficiency. How to calculate occurrences of specified word in a large text file? I can only think of indexOf() method in most programming languages, but I don't think that the correct answer.
Does anyone have any tips for getting a good price on new/used programming-related books? I've looked at some of the more popular books (like DDD and GoF), and even used they can be pretty pricey. I'm not saying they aren't worth it, but I feel like there might be a more focused book store or exchange or something just for devs and/or IT professionals that I just don't know about.
Any tips at all would be appreciated.
Hey,
I have an input text :
<input name="Email" type="text" id="Email" value="[email protected]" />
I want to put a default value like "What's your programming question ? be specific." in StackOverFlow, and when the user click on it the default value disapear.
It may not be a pure programming question but I'm looking for information about enCapsa. Do you know what it is, have you ever used it? I'm reading some papers about it but I can't really see how it works and what it can be used for in an IT company (and this is what i am supposed to find out).
I'm currently pursuing my BS in Computer Science and my school offers specializations based upon taking certain advanced electives. I was thinking about getting two of them since they are sort of on the way to my degree anyway. They are Software Engineering and Programming Languages and Compilers .
Would these specializations actually be useful in finding a job? Would employers even care about them?
I have been trying to follow the steps in the book Ruby Practical Project - making music with ruby and was trying to get CoreMIDI and output some notes using SimpleSynth. I can connect to the destination but when i do something like
midi = LiveMIDI.new
midi.note_on(0, 60, 100)
I get no output from the sound system. Has anyone tried the code and faced similar situation??
And also What are the better libraries for music programming in Ruby?
I already have some regex logic which says to look for a div tag with class=something. However, this might occur more than once (one after another). You can't simply add square brackets around that complex regex logic already (e.g. [:some complicated regex logic already existing:]* -- so how do you do it in regex? I want to avoid having to use the programming language logic to append that regex logic after itself if I can...
Thanks
Consider a very seasoned programmer that doesn't require any teaching of programming concepts, at all, what would be the best resource, dead trees or otherwise, to learn Flash?
Hi (first of all, thanks for your attention & sorry for my bad english hahaha also this is not a programming error, or thats what I think, I think this is an error in some configuration of the server or something else but I dont know what)
I have a php script (is running like a process of linux, its not running on the web browser) that send SMS via SMPP on the port 2055 (using sockets in php) & then inserts like 10,000 rows into a dababase on MySQL, the script gets the data from a XML file; firts it was running in a shared server (Hostgator is our hosting provider) & at the begining it worked fine, with no trouble, but 5 months later an error appear, the process just die with no reason, the script only sent & inserted 700 rows in the table of the database & the process didnt show any warning or error, nothing appears in the error logs, & I didnt make any change in the script
Hostgator never helped us hahaha so we decided to move the script from the shared server to a dedicated server; I thought it was a memory problem or something like that, but when we move the script to the dedicated server the problem just get worse, the script die when has just sent & inserted 40 to 50 rows to the database
the information about this error:
the shared server is on Red Hat 4.1.2-46 & the dedicated server is on CentOS 5.4
I have commented the line that sends the SMS, & the problem remains
in the shared server, at the begining the script was fine, but then the script started to die when has just inserted 700 aprox. in the database, & now the script is dying when has inserted 2500 rows, its better but we didnt change anything
in the dedicated server, the script dies when has just inserted like 40 row in the table
the script, before it dies, change to a zombie process & we dont know why
the usage of memory appears to be 0.3%, and of the cpu appears to be 0.7% to 1%
I have changed the max memory limit of php to 128Mb, and even to -1 (so php wont have any limit) but the problem remains
we have the limit of 50 connections of mysql at the same time, so I think this is not the problem
Im using mysqli to connect from php to mysql
Hostgator report that they haven't made any change or update in the servers
what could be the problem?? what should I do??? what should I search??? is something in the logic Im missing?? what steps do I have to follow when managing & searching problems of process on Linux???
thank you very much, I think this is not a programming problem, but you have more experience than me, you can tell me
thanks!!! bye!!! :)
I'm starting work on some simulations using MPI and want to do the programming in Python/scipy. The scipy site lists a number of mpi libraries, but I was hoping to get feedback on quality, ease of use, etc from anyone who has used one.
I followed "iPad Programming Guide" from Apple to try to upgrade one of my iPhone project for iPad. But I cannot find the menu item of "upgrade current target for ipad" even after I selected one of the Targets.
What is the reason? My SDK version is 3.1.3.
Thank you.

If it is possible to auto-format code before and after a source control commit, checkout, diff, etc. does a company really need a standard code style?
It feels like standard coding style debates that have been raging since programming began like "put the bracket on the following line" or "properly indent your (" are no longer essential.
I realize in languages where white space matters the diff will have to consider it but for languages where the style is a personal preference is there really a need to worry about it anymore?
I want to have the addthis widget available for my users, but I want to lazy load it so that my page loads as quickly as possible. However, after trying it via a script tag and then via my lazy loading method, it appears to only work via the script tag. In the obfuscated code, I see something that looks like it's dependent on the DOMContentLoaded event (at least for firefox).
Since the DOMContentLoaded event has already fired, the widget doesn't render properly. What to do?
I could just use a script tag (slower)... or could I fire (in a cross browser way) the DOMContentLoaded (or equivalent) event? I have a feeling this may not be possible b/c I believe that (like jQuery) there are multiple tests of the content ready event, and so multiple simulated events would have to occur.
Nonetheless, this is an interesting problem b/c I have seen a couple widgets now assume that you are including their stuff via static script tags. It would be nice if they wrote code that was more useful to developers concerned about speed, but until then, is there a work around?? And/or are any of my assumptions wrong?
Edit:
Because the 1st answer to the question seemed to miss the point of my problem, I wanted to clarify the situation.
This is about a specific problem. I'm not looking for yet another lazy load script or check if some dependencies are loaded script. Specifically this problem deals with
external widgets that you do not
have control over and may or may not
be obfuscated
delaying the load of the
external widgets until they
are needed or at least, til
substantially after everything else
has been loaded including other deferred elements
b/c of the how
the widget was written, precludes
existing, typical lazy loading
paradigms
While it's esoteric, I have seen it happen with a couple widgets - where the widget developers assume that you're just willing to throw in another script tag at the bottom of the page. I'm looking to save those 500-1000 ms** though as numerous studies by yahoo, google, and amazon show it to be important to your user's experience.
**My testing with hammerhead and personal experience indicates that this will be my savings in this case.
I remember back in the mid 90's that I came across a systems methodology called Checkland's Approach or sometimes called SSM (Soft Systems Methodology).
With the advent of Agile and Extreme Programming, not to mention some of the harder methodologies and methods out there related to Object technologies.
Is the use of such a methodology still relevant in today's world?
I have recently started reading "Programming Challenges" book by S. Skiena and believe or not I am kind of stuck in the very first problem.
Here's a link to the problem: 3n+1 problem
Here's my code:
#include <iostream>
#include <vector>
#include <algorithm>
using namespace std;
unsigned long calc(unsigned long n);
int main()
{
int i, j, a, b, m;
vector<int> temp;
while (true)
{
cin >> i >> j;
if (cin.fail())
break;
if (i < j)
{
a = i;
b = j;
}
else
{
a = j;
b = i;
}
temp.clear();
for (unsigned int k = a; k != b; k++)
{
temp.push_back(calc(k));
}
m = *max_element(temp.begin(), temp.end());
cout << i << ' ' << j << ' ' << m << endl;
}
}
unsigned long calc(unsigned long n)
{
unsigned long ret = 1;
while (n != 1)
{
if (n % 2 == 0)
n = n/2;
else
n = 3*n + 1;
ret++;
}
return ret;
}
I know the code is inefficient and I should not be using vectors to store the data. Anyway, I still would like to know what it's wrong with this, since, for me, it makes perfect sense, even though I am getting WA (wrong answer at programming challenges judge and RE (Runtime Error) at UVa judge).
Thanks.
I currently use visual studio 2008 for creating projects that can run on windows. Can you recommend me of other tools that can be used to develop applications for other operating systems?(Linux, Mac, Solaris)
The most prominent programming languages will do(C++, C#, F#)
And scripting languages(PHP, Perl, etc)
I am a newbie in socket programming. I am developing a server client application.
And I am using Asynchronous tcp ip socket. But now I am facing a problem. In my client side I am receiving my data by a 2kb byte array by beginReceive method. Its working perfectly if data size below or equals to 2 kb, but problem occurring when data size exceeding 2kb range. Please give me some solution.
I don't like debugging in a debugger, because I think it is often below the abstraction layer of the programming language and it is often not reproducible. I favor usign unit tests when possible and I think they are a good way, but it is not always that easy to implement them. Do you know about any other alternative approaches to avoid the use of debugger?
Hi, I'd like to know how to convert a file into PDF when I'm programming in VB. Do you have the script or if there is a pre-defined function, what is it's name?
Thanks
I'd like to display a photo on an Android Activity screen with doing gradual and continual fade-in from pale monotone sepia to the final full color. I know how to do it on a Java Image/BufferedImage for the Graphic object but unfortunately I know nothing for the Android programming environment. Could anyone help?
