  I have two sets of drop downs for start date and end date. Each date is created by selecting a month, day, and year from 3 separate drop downs. I currently have RequiredFieldValidators on all the drop downs (which just shows a * if nothing has been selected yet), but I need to validate that the end date is greater than the start date. I can take care of the logic behind comparing the dates, but in terms of the validation method used, can someone help me out (I essentially need to validate 6 drop downs all at one time)? I tried a custom validation using client side javascript but couldn't get it to work. Can you even validate multiple drop downs using ASP.NET validation controls? (which is what I would like to do - I can always write the javascript, but was trying to stay away from this). Thanks.

Later, the user deletes one of the contact entities that was a recipient of the message. Our application should delete the appropriate Contact entity, but we want to preserve the original recipient list for the message that was sent for the user's records. In essence, we want a snapshot of the message entity at the time it was sent. If we naively delete the contact entity, though, we lose snapshot integrity; if not, we are left with an invalid key.   As my research leads me to believe that for loops are the fastest iteration construct in javascript language. I was thinking that also declaring a conditional length value for the for loop would be faster... to make it clearer, which of the following do you think would be faster? Example ONE for(var i = 0; i < myLargeArray.length; i++ ) { console.log(myLargeArray[i]); } Example TWO var count = myLargeArray.length; for(var i = 0; i < count; i++ ) { console.log(myLargeArray[i]); } my logic follows that on each iteration in example one accessing the length of myLargeArray on each iteration is more computationally expensive then accessing a simple integer value as in example two?

• Querying my JPA provider (Hibernate) for a collection of <Id,Name> of an entity

  Hi, I have an entity which looks something like this: Id (PK) Name Other business properties and associations... I have the need for my DAL (JPA with hibernate as provider) to return a list of the entities which correlate to some constraints (or just return them all) but instead of returning the entities themselves I'd like to receive only the Id and the Name properties. I know this can be achieved with HQL/SQL (something like: select id,name from entity where...) but I don't want to go down that road. I was thinking of somehow defining the pair a compositioned part of the entity and thought that might help me but I'm not sure that's "legal" as the Id is the PK. The logic for this scenario is to have a textbox which asynchronously queries the web-service (and through it the DAL) for the relevant entities and once an entity is selected then it is loaded as a whole and shipped to the front-end. User clicks something in view 2. this is passed on to controller to manage 3. controller makes some changes in Model 4. Model calls method on view which has the logic to refresh UI Questions around these: Q1) Can controller also modify View or Model only updates View? Q2) When screen loads for the first time, there is no Model change. Then, who fetches data from model and populates view? View directly calls Model and populates itself OR controller gets data and passes to view method OR some dummy event is raised at Model which updates View?

• Strange margin-behaviour with Sifr spans in link (screens)

  I'm making a menu and it's supposed to look like picture nr 1 on this link. However, at this moment, it looks like picture nr 2. There's no logic in this behaviour, since all three elements have the same css-attributes. Moreover, let's change the word "Reiki" to "Psychotherapie" and see what happens... (picture nr 3) For some reason the word "Reiki" ignores certain attributes. This is not a problem when Sifr is turned off. I guess I'll need some extra CSS to solve this (messing with paddings, heights or margins on that specific element doesn't give any result. It just won't budge). Unless someone knows a more elegant solution?

  Hello, we have application where database contains large parts of business logic in triggers, with a update subsequently firing triggers on several other tables. I want to refactor the mess and wanted to start by extracting procedures from triggers, but can't find any reliable tool to do this. Using "Extract procedure" in both SQL Developer and Toad failed to properly handle :new and :old trigger variables. If you had similar problem with triggers, did you find a way around it? Trying to read the contents of a CMS HTML placeholder control into a string reader object so certain logic can be performed and the page output modified before it is displayed: StringReader srHtml = new StringReader(this.HtmlPlaceholderControl1.Html); The problem is that the Html property is empty during Page_Load, I've tried in a PreRender overload as well, but the property is still empty. The HtmlPlaceholder control does render html when the page load has completed. Which event should be handled in order to read the propery of the web control?

But if you take this to the extreme fine-grain you could say that an object adding two numbers together is a responsibility and a possible reason to change. Therefore the object should contain no other logic, because it would produce another reason for change. I'm curious if there is anyone out there that has any strategies for 'scoping', the single-responsibility principle that's slightly less objective?

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to make an image rotate along with a user's finger dragging it left or right. I want to try and match the rate a user's finger is moving with the rate the image is rotating. I've got the basic setup for my application going, with the menus and whatnot I want to have, and that's all running great on the emulator, I'm just not sure how to approach this part.   Hi there, I am looking for an alternative to using an object/variable in global scope -- I would like to associate key/value pairs with specific DOM elements (eg, a DIV), so that I can use them as input for logic that processes other elements (eg, child elements of said DIV). I tried something naive like: $('[foo=bar]').key='value' , and $('[foo=bar]')[key]='value', but it puked. Doing something like: var foobar = $('[foo=bar]'); foobar.key = 'value' -- works, but the new property/value only affects the new object (ie, foobar, not $('[foo=bar]')) Most likely there's something terribly basic I am overlooking.   I have a project that will be using Access 2003 as the font-end and the data being stored in SQL Server. Access will connect to SQL Server via linked tables with all the database logic (stored procedures, views) within SQL Server. Given this setup, would it be better to use ADO or DAO within Access? Is it just a matter of preference or is one more suited to Access as a font-end and SQL Server as the data store? Especially when using linked tables. Thanks.

  Hi all, I'm working on a controller that handles logins for a Web app. These logins will come from multiple clients but will all contain the same data. However, depending on the client, this data will be interpreted into common entities for our webapp differently. For instance, we have a user code that gets sent in, and in one case we may use the first four digits of the code, and in another case 12 digits of the code to map to a field on a User entity. Instead of handling this all in the controller and having big nasty if blocks of logic, I would like to use a pattern to handle how this information gets ingested into our application. What are your opinions?

  In an application I'm developing, I have the need to handle a socket-timeout differently from a general socket exception. The problem is that many different issues result in a SocketException and I need to know what the cause was. There is no inner exception reported, so the only information I have to work with is the message: "A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond" This question has a general and specific part: is it acceptable to write conditional logic based upon the textual representation of an exception? Is there a way to avoid needing exception handling? • web page db query optimisation

  I am putting together a web page which is quite 'expensive' in terms of Db hits. I dont want to start optimizing at this stage - though with me trying to hit a deadline, I may end up not optimising at all. Currently the page requires 18 (thats right eighteen) hits to the db. I am already using joins, and some of the queries are UNIONed to minimize the trips to the db. My local dev machine can handle this (page is not slow) however, I feel if I release this into the wild, the number of queries will quickly overwhelm my database (mySQL). I could always use memcache or something similar, but I would much rather continue with my other dev work that needs to be completed before the deadline - at least retrieving the page work, its simply a matter of optimization. My question therefore is - is 18 db queries for a single page retrieval completely outrageous - (i.e. I should put everything on hold and optimize the hell of the retrieval logic), or shall I continue as normal, meet the deadline and release on schedule and see what happens?

[Query]: Why and how are these values inferred? I mean why specifically have only 32 or 64 bit pointers? The diagram says, One data block{8 KB} for each pointer {4 bytes/8 bytes} [Query]: How does this actually work out? i.e. 8*1024 bytes / 8 bytes = 1024 bytes?
