• Use Microsoft PowerPivot to Access Salesforce.com Through the OData Connector

  This article will explain how to connect to any of our OData Connectors with Microsoft Excel's PowerPivot business intelligence tool. While the example will use the Salesforce Connector, the same process can be followed for any of the RSSBus OData Connectors. Step 1: Download and install both the Salesforce Connector from RSSBus and PowerPivot for Excel from Microsoft. Step 2: Next you will want to configure the Salesforce Connector to connect with your Salesforce account. If you browse to the Help tab in the Salesforce Connector application, there is a link to the Getting Started Guide which will walk you through setting up the Salesforce Connector. Step 3: Once you have successfully configured the Salesforce Connector application, you will want to open Excel and select the PowerPivot tab at the top of the window. Step 4: Here you will click on the button labeled PowerPivot Window at the top left. Step 5: A new pop up will appear. Now select the option "From Data Feeds". Step 6: In the resulting Table Import Wizard you will enter the OData URL of the Salesforce Connector. You can find this by clicking on the Settings tab of the Salesforce Connector. It will look something like this: http://localhost:8181/sfconnector/data/conn/odata.rsc. You will also need to add authentication options in this step. To do this, click on the Advanced button and scroll down to the Security section of the resulting pop up window. Change the Integrated Security option to "Basic". You will also need to enter the User ID and Password of the user who has access to the Salesforce Connector. Step 7: When the connection to the Salesforce Connector is successful, click the Next button at the bottom of the window. Step 8: A table listing of the available tables will appear in the next window of the wizard. Here you will select which tables you want to import and click Finish. Step 9: If the import was successful, click Close and you are done! Your data is now in PowerPivot.

• XFCE: active panel buttons when mouse is on screen edge

  I'm using XFCE 4.6.1 (Xubuntu distribution) on my laptop and main computer; the settings are approximately the same. so far for the intro. What I'm experiencing is that when going to the screen edge over the task bar on the laptop, the button under the mouse is active. On the main machine however, having the mouse on the screen edge, the button below it doesn't react at all! Only if I move the pointer towards the center a bit, the hover highlight starts and the button becomes clickable. I've tried to change the panel size, desktop theme and a few other settings, but none seems to cure that problem. Is there something that causes this problem? (Googling also seems to give no results)

  I am using Windows 7 Media Center with a digital TV tuner. If I am watching live TV and then use the mouse to bring up the control buttons at the bottom of the screen and press the record button once, then a single red circle 'recording' icon appears at the left side of the time slider. If I press the record button a second time, the 'recording' icon changes to a red circle with several shadowed circles fading off to the right. Pressing the record button a third time halts the recording. What is the meaning of the two different 'recording' icons?

• Can't Shut Down computer with windows 8 Release Preview

  I downloaded Release Preview and installed it. I have a problem when I shut down the computer. After I press windows key + I Power Shut Down, a box pops up titled "Winlogon.exe - No Disk. Then under that is the message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into Drive G". After hitting the retry button a couple of different times the screen finally goes dark. When I was going to turn it back on, I noticed the Power Button was still list. The only way to do a complete Shutdown is to hold in the power button directly. How do I fix this problem?

• How do I set up a "gateway" for a specific subdomain?

  I'm looking at setting up a website that will run a few different apps. Most of them can be managed by an Apache server, but I've got one specific thing that will run on a custom HTTP server. Looking around on apache.org, it looks like you can use mod_proxy to configure Apache to act as a "reverse proxy" and forward requests from a specific subdirectory to a new server with the ProxyPass directive. So if I wanted send anything from mysite.com/special on to the custom server, that's how I would do it. But what if I want to set it up as a subdomain instead? The documentation doesn't seem to cover that. If, I wanted to make it forward anything from special.mysite.com to the new server, how would I set that up?

• Computer can't boot

  I have a 1 year old PC and the last weeks, when I press the ON button the PC doesn't power on ( Like I didn't press the ON button ). I have to plug and unplug a few times the power cord in order to make it work. At the start this happened once in 10 boots. Now it happens much more frequently to the point that when I press the power on button it never even opens if I don't do the cord switch thingy. Very rarely also, the PC shut downs for no reason and no warning, even when idle. The important fact to note here is, the green light on the motherboard is always on, even when the PC doesn't power on. What should I do? Is it a Power Supply failure or a motherboard? My power supply is a high end corsair model, AX850 and my motherboard a high end ASUS.

• Token based Authentication for WCF HTTP/REST Services: Authentication

  This post shows some of the implementation techniques for adding token and claims based security to HTTP/REST services written with WCF. For the theoretical background, see my previous post. Disclaimer The framework I am using/building here is not the only possible approach to tackle the problem. Based on customer feedback and requirements the code has gone through several iterations to a point where we think it is ready to handle most of the situations. Goals and requirements The framework should be able to handle typical scenarios like username/password based authentication, as well as token based authentication The framework should allow adding new supported token types Should work with WCF web programming model either self-host or IIS hosted Service code can rely on an IClaimsPrincipal on Thread.CurrentPrincipal that describes the client using claims-based identity Implementation overview In WCF the main extensibility point for this kind of security work is the ServiceAuthorizationManager. It gets invoked early enough in the pipeline, has access to the HTTP protocol details of the incoming request and can set Thread.CurrentPrincipal. The job of the SAM is simple: Check the Authorization header of the incoming HTTP request Check if a “registered” token (more on that later) is present If yes, validate the token using a security token handler, create the claims principal (including claims transformation) and set Thread.CurrentPrincipal If no, set an anonymous principal on Thread.CurrentPrincipal. By default, anonymous principals are denied access – so the request ends here with a 401 (more on that later). To wire up the custom authorization manager you need a custom service host – which in turn needs a custom service host factory. The full object model looks like this: Token handling A nice piece of existing WIF infrastructure are security token handlers. Their job is to serialize a received security token into a CLR representation, validate the token and turn the token into claims. The way this works with WS-Security based services is that WIF passes the name/namespace of the incoming token to WIF’s security token handler collection. This in turn finds out which token handler can deal with the token and returns the right instances. For HTTP based services we can do something very similar. The scheme on the Authorization header gives the service a hint how to deal with an incoming token. So the only missing link is a way to associate a token handler (or multiple token handlers) with a scheme and we are (almost) done. WIF already includes token handler for a variety of tokens like username/password or SAML 1.1/2.0. The accompanying sample has a implementation for a Simple Web Token (SWT) token handler, and as soon as JSON Web Token are ready, simply adding a corresponding token handler will add support for this token type, too. All supported schemes/token types are organized in a WebSecurityTokenHandlerCollectionManager and passed into the host factory/host/authorization manager. Adding support for basic authentication against a membership provider would e.g. look like this (in global.asax): var manager = new WebSecurityTokenHandlerCollectionManager(); manager.AddBasicAuthenticationHandler((username, password) => Membership.ValidateUser(username, password));   Adding support for Simple Web Tokens with a scheme of Bearer (the current OAuth2 scheme) requires passing in a issuer, audience and signature verification key: manager.AddSimpleWebTokenHandler(     "Bearer",     "http://identityserver.thinktecture.com/trust/initial",     "https://roadie/webservicesecurity/rest/",     "WFD7i8XRHsrUPEdwSisdHoHy08W3lM16Bk6SCT8ht6A="); In some situations, SAML token may be used as well. The following configures SAML support for a token coming from ADFS2: var registry = new ConfigurationBasedIssuerNameRegistry(); registry.AddTrustedIssuer( "d1 c5 b1 25 97 d0 36 94 65 1c e2 64 fe 48 06 01 35 f7 bd db", "ADFS"); var adfsConfig = new SecurityTokenHandlerConfiguration(); adfsConfig.AudienceRestriction.AllowedAudienceUris.Add( new Uri("https://roadie/webservicesecurity/rest/")); adfsConfig.IssuerNameRegistry = registry; adfsConfig.CertificateValidator = X509CertificateValidator.None; // token decryption (read from config) adfsConfig.ServiceTokenResolver = IdentityModelConfiguration.ServiceConfiguration.CreateAggregateTokenResolver();             manager.AddSaml11SecurityTokenHandler("SAML", adfsConfig);   Transformation The custom authorization manager will also try to invoke a configured claims authentication manager. This means that the standard WIF claims transformation logic can be used here as well. And even better, can be also shared with e.g. a “surrounding” web application. Error handling A WCF error handler takes care of turning “access denied” faults into 401 status codes and a message inspector adds the registered authentication schemes to the outgoing WWW-Authenticate header when a 401 occurs. If you are only interested in viewing a few tweets on occasion then it is not a problem. But if you are looking at a large number of tweets on a daily basis then it can be very frustrating. Notice the last tweet from TinyHacker shown here… After After installing the extension the only thing that you will need to do is refresh your Twitter page if you had it open before-hand. Now there will be a seamless connection from page to page when you are reading through tweets. You can see the TinyHacker tweet from above followed oh so nicely by tweets from the second page…this is definitely an improvement. For those who may be curious if you are quick enough with your mouse you can see what the “automated connection process” looks like. Conclusion If you are tired of constantly clicking the “More Button” and just want to read tweets without interruption then you will be very satisfied after adding this extension to your browser. • Be Careful When Referencing SPList.Items

  Be very careful how you reference your SPListItem objects through the SharePoint API.  I’ll say it again.  Be very careful how you reference your SPListItem objects through the SharePoint API.  Ok, now that you get the point that this will be a “learn from my mistakes and don’t do unsmart things like I did” post, let’s dig into what it was that I did poorly. Scenario     For the past year I’ve been building custom .Net applications that are hosted through SharePoint.  These application involve a number of SharePoint lists, external databases, custom web parts, and other SharePoint elements to provide functionality.  About two weeks ago I received a message from one of our end users that a custom application was performing slowly.  Specifically performance was slow when users were performing actions that interacted with the primary SharePoint list storing data for that app. The Problem     I took a copy of the production site into a dev environment to investigate the code that was executing.  After attaching the debugger and running through the code I quickly found pieces of code referencing SPListItem objects (like below) that were performing very poorly: SPListItem myItem = SPContext.Current.Web.Lists["List Name"].Items.GetItemById(value); // do updates on SPListItem retrieved     As it turns out the SPList I was referencing was fairly large at ~1000 items and weighing in over 150 MB.  You see the problem with my above code is that I retrieved the SPListItem by first (unnecessarily) going through the Items member of the list.  As I understand it, when doing so the executing code will attempt to resolve that entity and pull it from the database and into RAM (all 150 MB.)  This causes the equivalent of a 50 car pile up in terms of performance with a single update taking more than 15 seconds. The Solution     The solution is actually quite simple and I wish I had realized this during development.  Instead of going through the Items member it is possible to call GetItemById(…) directly on the SPList as in the example below: SPListItem myItem = SPContext.Current.Web.Lists["List Name"].GetItemById(value); // do updates on SPListItem retrieved     After making this simple change performance skyrocketed and updates were back to less than a second.   Conclusion     When given the option between two solutions, usually the simplest is the best solution.  In my scenario I was adding extra complexity going through the API the long way around to get to the objects I needed and it ended up hurting performance greatly.  Luckily we were able to find and resolve the performance issue in a relatively short amount of time.  Like I said at the beginning of the post, learn from my mistakes and hope it helps you.         -Frog Out   Image linked from http://www.freespirit.com/files/IMAGE/COVER/LARGE/BeCarefulSafe.jpg

  Problem: In SharePoint Workflow, "This task is currently locked by a running workflow and cannot be edited" is the common exception, that we face. When we modify a Workflow Task from Custom TaskEdit Page.   when we try to modify the workflow task from outside workflow default Page, like custom workflow taskedit page. then is exception occurs.suppose we have custom task edit page with dropdown  and values are submitted/ Progress/ completed etc and we want to complete task from here. it will throw exception on SPWorkflowTask.AlterTask method, which changes the TaskStatus.When I debug, to find the root cause I actully found that the workflow is not locked. The InternalState flag of the workflow does not include the Locked flag bits(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd928318(v=office.12).aspx) When I found this link http://geek.hubkey.com/2007/09/locked-workflow.htmlIt is exactly what I wanted. It says that "when the WorkflowVersion of the task list item is not equal to 1" then the error occurs. The solution that is propsed here works fantastically if ((int)task[SPBuiltInFieldId.WorkflowVersion] != 1){    SPList parentList = task.ParentList.ParentWeb.Lists[new Guid(task[SPBuiltInFieldId.WorkflowListId].ToString())];    SPListItem parentItem = parentList.Items.GetItemById((int)task[SPBuiltInFieldId.WorkflowItemId]);    SPWorkflow workflow = parentItem.Workflows[new Guid(task[SPBuiltInFieldId.WorkflowInstanceID].ToString())];    if (!workflow.IsLocked)    {       task[SPBuiltInFieldId.WorkflowVersion] = 1;       task.SystemUpdate();      break;    }} It will reset the workflow version to 1 again.Conclusion: This Exception is completely confusing. So, we need to find at first whether our workflow is really locked or not. If it is really locked then use 1st method. If not, then check the workflow version and set it to 1 again.Jayant Sharma

• Blogger sub-directory

  There has long been a debate on the internet about SEO in relation to using either sub-domains or sub-directories for blogs. I am not terribly interested in that debate. I merely want to redirect my blogger blog to my domain, the easiest way possible, and in a manner least likely to impair the current functionality of my server/websites. I believe that the simplest way in which to do this is to use a subdirectory for the blog (although I am slightly concerned that the CNAME record will be shared by both) My question is this: how to use custom domain sub-directories when blogger refuse their use; complaining that the "URL must not end with a path" when a user attempts to establish such a custom domain? Google searches on this matter are oddly useless, as most results return Blogger's forum entries that always seem to direct to Blogger's Help home page o.O (using the search facilities of Blogger's Help directory itself fails to unearth these forum posts). Any pointers (no pun intended) would be greatly appreciated.

• So you want a French Site?

  I thought I would write a quick write up of how to create a french site in SharePoint 2007. I'm not talking about a Variation but just a plain French Site from the ground up. There were some gotchas that I felt were worth blogging about. First:  go to Microsoft Telnet Article and follow the install instructions. Make sure that when you get to the download page that you select "French" as part of the drop down and you download and install the right language pack. I noticed that if you did not click the "change" button enven though I selected the 'french' language pack, it reverted back to the english language pack.   Second: You will notice a couple of things. When you go to central admin you will see the following:    Now you can pick between french site or english. You will get this if you install other language packs and they will be listed in the drop down. You will notice that you now have french headings and frech listings of sites. You see "Publishing" as a heading because I have a custom site definition that I deployed as a french site. Third: As you start navigating around and trying to create document libraries or sites you will start getting errors. Errors like the following: "Cannot make a cache safe URL for "SelectorControls.js", file not found. Please verify that the file exists under the layouts directory. " Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services. Once you resolve the issue with this "js" file, you will find that there are other js files that are missing. The only problem is that if you are not fluent in French or the language you are trying to deploy, Well, you'll have a tough time understanding error messages as they will all be in the new language you are trying to deploy. So let's just talk about what happened when you installed the language pack. In the 12 Hive:  12/Template    you will now see a 1033 folder and a 1036 folder. The 1036 folder is the folder that was created and added as part of the language pack. What the above error is saying is that now that it's looking at the 1036 folder, well, it's missing some files. The nice thing is that these files are included in the 1033 folder (which is the English Language Pack). Simply copy and paste the controls from the one folder to the other. There will be more than one conflict so you will have to move serveral controls over. Can't remember how many but simply add them as error messages come up. I had to add some navigation controls and some content selectors.   Now that's all that you need to install the Frech Language pack anc reate site collections that are entirely in a another language. Do not mistake this with Variations, where you can have multiple language sites. For those of you doing a little bit extra with this, let me share what I was doing extra and what I needed to get it working for me. I had had a custom site definition which was obviously not showing up in my selection of french sites. I was under the impression that all sites in English would show up in french and that the sites were simply routed to a new Resource file for french content. And that is the case but there is a little extra that needs to be done if you have a custom site definition deployed:  First: Under hive 12/Template/1033/XML  there is a listing of site definition files that are deployed to the English side of things. If you navigate to 12/Template/1036/XML  and open one of the site definitions you will see that they are similar and reference the existing site definitions installed on the server, except that they have some french added to descriptions and names. Simply copy the xml file of your custom template to the 1036 folder to have it show up as a selection when you select French as the dropdown entry when create a site colleciton. You can go ahead and change the description and name to suit the language it's under.    Second: As part of my site definition, I packaed up several list templates, that were saved as STP files. When you navigate to the list template listing, well, the templates are for English sites, not French so I cannot create document libraries based on the template. What now? well here comes KWIzCom to the rescue! They seem to have put out a "STP language converter" where you can take a site template or list template and convert it to any target language you are after. It's a free download, Use it and you're good to go.  One thing I will mention is that when I convereted the English documents I whent ahead and converted them to French-Canadien. And it didn't work! so I finally figured out that the French Version it was expecting in the french site was "French-France". Don't know why that is, it's just what needs to be done to get that working. When I did that, I was able to use the List templates that I created in the English site for the French Site.   Hope it helps , good luck!

Not big changes, obviously, and we wish to distribute this custom image for clients to use as a bootable CD or USB stick in order to have a quick environment where all our tools are available instantly. What are the licensing and legal consequences of this? What if some of the programs or plugins that are to be pre-packaged are not GPL'd? • MySQL - ODBC Data Connector

  Having previsouly installed and then configured MySQL, you may now need to install the ODBC Data Connector driver in order to connect to your MySQL database. Following the Splash screen the first thing to choose is the Setup Type for your installation.  As usual I chose custom so that I could see the components that were actually being installed.  In this case the custom set up screen allows you to choose to install the driver and the documentation. Finally you can complete the installation Assuming it completes okay you have now installed the MySQL ODBC driver. My intention for installing all these MySQL components is so that I can now attempt to get BizTalk 2009 talking to the MySQL database for a solution that I am currently working on.  For this I will next be looking at the Community ODBC Adapter.

• Back / Forward mouse buttons do not work in VMWare Workstation 6.5 Guest OS

  I am using a Logitech G9 mouse and running VMWare Workstation 6.5.3 on Vista x64. The guest OS is Win XP, and has the most current version of VMWare Tools installed. Left / right buttons and mouse wheel scrolling work fine in the guest OS, but the back / forward buttons are apparently not recognized. I have tried installing the Logitech software inside the guest OS as well, but it still did not recognize the back / forward buttons. (I didn't really expect this to work since the guest OS doesn't actually see the mouse hardware as a Logitech G9 directly anyway.) I vaguely remember seeing something a while back about editing the virtual machine config file to specify a 5-button mouse rather than the default 3-button setup, but I can't seem to find any specifics on how to do so in the VMWare documentation. Does anyone know if such a workaround exists, or is 5-button mouse functionality just not supported?

  Many a times you may need to copy the "Format" in Word. The "Copy Format" feature lets you quickly and easily "copy" all the formatting characteristics from one group of selected text to another. This is helpful when you have several headings that you want consistent formatting. Here are steps on how to Copy Formatting: 1. Select, or highlight, the item of text containing the format you wish to copy. 2. Office 2003 - Click on the Format Painter Button in the Standard Toolbar (looks like Paintbrush). Office 2007 - Format Painter Button is located on the Home tab (looks like a Paintbrush). Office 2003 - An I-beam with a small cross to the left will appear as you move your mouse. Office 2007 - An I-beam with a small paintbrush will appear as you move your mouse. 3. Select the text you wish to copy the formatting to. 4. Formatting of the selected text will automatically change. For multiple formatting changes, double-click on the Format Painter button in Step 2. Remember, you'll have to click it again to deselect it or press Esc.

• Laptop shuts down upon waking from suspend

  The computer enters suspend either by closing lid, choosing suspend from the top-right drop down, or hitting the power button and pressing suspend. It doesn't matter. I then attempt to wake the computer either by opening the lid (if it was closed) or hitting the power button. Again, doesn't matter. The computer will then immediately shutdown about 50% of the time. It seems to be more likely to shut down the longer it has been on suspend. I took a snapshot of /var/log/pm-suspend.log after a successfully resume and a shutdown. The only difference (outside of timestamps of course) was that a successful resume, after reporting the success of various suspend hooks, writes: Thu Jul 5 21:36:45 PDT 2012: performing suspend Thu Jul 5 21:37:10 PDT 2012: Awake. Thu Jul 5 21:37:10 PDT 2012: Running hooks for resume and then reports successful resume hooks. When it shuts down, the log ends at "performing suspend". I diffed the two files so I know this is the only difference. Thus, it looks like it's not even trying to wake up. Would love some ideas on this one. I've scoured the web but can't seem to find anyone else running into the same issue (it seems more common that the computer shuts down upon entering suspend, or only on hitting the power button to wake, and haven't seen any that are random like mine). I'll update with any requested information.

  Hello. I am following along a book in which Insight debugger is required. I didn't find it on my Maverick. I googled and I found that it's not supported in debian anymore but I really need to install it. I tried to compile the source and it installed but keep telling me that tk is missing whenever i start it. I installed tk with sudo aptitude install tk then tried to run again it's the same. I compiled it one more time and nothing really changes. So please how can I install that ? For developers to try themselves to handle unhandled exceptions in ADF Controller, it is possible to extend the default exception handling, while still leveraging the declarative configuration. To add your own exception handler: · Create a Java class that extends ExceptionHandler · Create a textfile with the name “oracle.adf.view.rich.context.Exceptionhandler” (without the quotes) and store it in .adf\META-INF\services (you need to create the “services” folder) · In the file, add the absolute name of your custom exception handler class (package name and class name without the “.class” extension) For any exception you don't handle in your custom exception handler, just re-throw it for the default handler to give it a try … import oracle.adf.view.rich.context.ExceptionHandler; public class MyCustomExceptionHandler extends ExceptionHandler { public MyCustomExceptionHandler() {      super(); } public void handleException(FacesContext facesContext,                              Throwable throwable, PhaseId phaseId)                              throws Throwable {    String error_message;    error_message = throwable.getMessage();    //check error message and handle it if you can    if( … ){          //handle exception        …    }    else{       //delegate to the default ADFc exception handler        throw throwable;}    } } Note however, that it is recommended to first try and handle exceptions with the ADF Controller default exception handling mechanism. In the past, I've seen attempts on OTN to handle regular application use cases with custom exception handlers for where there was no need to override the exception handler. So don't go for this solution to quickly and always think of alternative solutions. Sometimes a try-catch-final block does it better than sophisticated web exception handling.
