• MYSQL not running on Ubuntu OS - Error 2002.

  Hi, I am a novice to mysql DB. I am trying to run the MYSQL Server on Ubuntu 10.04. Through Synaptic Package Manager I am have installed the mysql version: mysql-client-5.1 I wonder that how was the database password set for the mysql-client software that I installed through the above way.It would be nice if you could enlighten me on this. • Streamlining my javascript with a function

• How do I use IIS6 style metabase paths in IIS7 AppCmd tool?

  I'm currently in the process of upgrading old II6 automation scripts that use the IISVdir tool to create/modify/update apps and virtual directories, and replacing them with AppCmd for IIS7. The IIS6, "IISVDir" commands reference paths in that are from the metabase, eg, "/W3SVC/1/ROOT/MyApp" - where 1 is ID of the "Default Web Site" site. The command doesn't actually require the display name of the site to make changes to it. This works well, since on a different language OS, the "Default Web Site" site name could be named, for example, "??? Web ???" or anything else for that matter. But this flexibility is lost if AppCmd can only reference "Default Web Site" via its name, and not a language-neutral identifier. So, how can I script AppCmd to refer to sites, vdirs and apps using language neutral identifiers to reference the "Default App Site"? Perhaps I need to start creating my own site instead, from the start, and name it something else specific, and stop using "Default Web Site" as the root? (Disclosure: I only have a IIS7-English machine that I am working on currently, but I have both IIS6-English and IIS6-Japanese machines for testing my old scripts - so perhaps it really is just "Default Web Site" still on Win2k8-Japanese?)

• What languages should a microISV use to write commercial software?

  I've been writing software in Java for many years now, but it was always for internal applications that would be deployed to a server. I'd like to get into writing desktop applications now but I don't know where to start. I've written a few Java/Swing applications but again they were for internal use. My understanding is that Java and other semi-compiled and interpreted languages are too easy to reverse engineer, making them unsuitable for commercial software. I am aware that there are compilers for Java and some other interpreted language, but I've also heard that they are pricey and/or unreliable. Assuming I start a microISV and wish to develop and sell applications to a broad audience, what's my best bet? I would prefer something that can be written close to once, and compiled for different operating systems but I am not opposed to .NET and a Windows-only audience if other languages would compromise the experience (installation ease & user experience) in Windows. My only issue there is that I don't have a large starting budget and paying out the wazoo for the required development tools is not really in the cards.

  As i understand, if we declare a variable as volatile, then it will not be stored in the local cache. Whenever thread are updating the values, it is updated to the main memory. So, other threads can access the updated value. But in the following program both volatile and non-volatile variables are displaying same value. The volatile variable is not updated for the second thread. • Python 4 step setup with progressBars

• Search and highlight html - ignoring and maintaining tags

  I am looking for a good way to highlight key words in a block of html with stripping the html tags. I can regex to search for key words within html tags, but I haven't found a great way to search across tags. For example, if the key word phrase is "not bound" I want to be able to make this <p>I am not<strong>bound to please thee</strong> with my answers.</p> become wrapped in highlight tags, without breaking the "strong" tag (and making the html invalid) and become: <p>I am <span class="highlight">not</span><strong><span class="highlight">bound</span> to please thee</strong> with my answers.</p> The main issue is maintaining the html as it is AND wrapping blocks of text with highlight tags. I need to maintain the original html. Otherwise I would strip the tags. The best solution to this that I can think of right now would entail making a copy of the html and placing counter tokens where each space occurs, then stripping all tags and search for matching phrases, then looking back to the original and the tokenized strings and figuring out where to start building the highlight tags, then start walking forward, starting and ending highlight spans as needed from the beginning of the match until the end. This seems like overkill. I would like to something more elegant if possible. The solution would be written in C# or perhaps javascript, depending.

  just wanted to hear on the different general learning paths people embark on when learning a new language/framework. the one i currently use, which is how i learned bash and am currently learning python, is: instant hacking tutorial (very short tutorial introducing the basic syntax, variable declaration, loops, data types, etc. and how they are generally used) in depth tutorial with good programming style and slightly topic-specific (e.g. Mark Pilgrim's Dive into Python), important topics for me personally are regex methods, file IO, and ways the different data types are utilized best (i wrote a very primitive bayesian spam filter using python's dictionaries to keep track of word occurrences) spaced-repition of syntax or short recipes (i use anki, with questions like 'create dictionary with filename and filesize metadata, human-readable' or simpler ones like 'match 0 - 3 occurences of the letter M in a string', or 'return/create an iterator from two sequences') the use of spaced-repitition has been invaluable, and i credit it with the ease that i can recall/create python algorithms. however, i've recently started looking into django, and i've found that spaced-repitition, at least in my case, doesn't work very well for learning a framework, it works best with short code recipes (either that or i should start looking into more basic django framework tutorials). the problem i'm encountering is that since framework programming is not only algorithms, but actually learning the API, which can be quite complex since you have to learn all the methods, modules, the places where they are stored, and the sequence of which things have to be done. for ex. in django to start a project that deals with polls (from the django tutorial), one has to create the project, edit the settings.py file, create the polls app, edit the models.py file (which requires knowing the classes that are present in the module models), edit the urls.py file, etc. i found that my spaced-repition method didn't work very well for this type of learning, so i wanted to ask you guys what method(s) you use for learning the different frameworks/APIs.

• Compile IL code at runtime using .NET 3.5 and C# from file

  I would like to take a file that is an IL file, and at run time compile it back to an exe. Right now I can use process.start to fire off the command line with parameters (ilasm.exe) but I would like to automate this process from a C# service I will create. Is there a way to do this with reflection and reflection.emit? • How do I get Google Chrome's root bookmarks folder?

  Hi, I'm trying to write a better bookmark manager in chrome extensions. The problem is there are no simple examples (that I can find) about how to actually use the bookmarks api (available here: http://code.google.com/chrome/extensions/bookmarks.html ) I've looked at the example source (when I d/led and installed it on my computer it didn't do anything except provide a search box. Typing/typing and pressing return failed to do anything) and can't find anything useful. My ultimate goal is to make an extension that allows me to save pages to come and read later without having to go sign up for an account on some service somewhere. So I plan to create either one or two bookmark folders in the root folder/other bookmarks - at minimum an "unread pages" folder. In that folder I'll create the unread bookmarks. When the user marks the item as read, it will be removed from that folder. So that's what I'm trying to do... any help will be greatly appreciated, even if it's just pointing me to some good examples. • "Order By" in LINQ-to-SQL Causes performance issues

  I've set out to write a method in my C# application which can return an ordered subset of names from a table containing about 2000 names starting at the 100th name and returning the next 20 names. I'm doing this so I can populate a WPF DataGrid in my UI and do some custom paging. I've been using LINQ to SQL but hit a snag with this long executing query so I'm examining the SQL the LINQ query is using (Query B below). • How to retrieve a numbered sequence range from a List of filenames?

  I would like to automatically parse the entire numbered sequence range of a List<FileData> of filenames (sans extensions) by checking which part of the filename changes. Here is an example (file extension already removed): First filename: IMG_0000 Last filename: IMG_1000 Numbered Range I need: 0000 to 1000 Except I need to deal with every possible type of file naming convention such as: 0000 ... 9999 20080312_0000 ... 20080312_9999 IMG_0000 - Copy ... IMG_9999 - Copy 8er_green3_00001 .. 8er_green3_09999 etc. I need the entire 0-padded range e.g. 0001 not just 1 The sequence number is 0-padded e.g. 0001 The sequence number can be located anywhere e.g. IMG_0000 - Copy The range can start and end with anything i.e. doesn't have to start with 1 and end with 9999 Whenever I get something working for 8 random test cases, the 9th test breaks everything and I end up re-starting from scratch. • How does someone without a CS degree get an interview in a sluggish economy?

  I've been programming off and on since 4th grade (for about 20 years). Technology is one of my passions but after working in the field for a couple years out of High School, I spent nine months and $15,000 getting an accredited certificate in music performance instead of CS. I've been doing lots of self study but I think a CS degree is overkill for most line of business applications. Even so, HR departments can't be expected to know that... How does one get their foot in the proverbial door without a degree, especially in a smaller "fly-over country" market? ...or... Where can I get the cheapest/easiest degree that will pass muster (including testing out of as much as possible)? Don't get me wrong, I'm down with learning new things but I don't necessarily need the expense or coaching to motivate me. EDIT Consolidating good answers: Networking/User Groups Portfolio/Open Source Contributions Look for hybrid jobs (How I got my start :) ) Seek un-elitist companies/hiring managers. (Play the numbers game) Start my own business. (This is a bit challenging for a family man but a very good answer.   I have two queries that I am using to generate a report from, the problem is when I run the report, three fields do not show any data at all for some reason. If I connect directly to the first recordset it works fine, but then SQL throws the error message: Multi-level GROUP BY cause not allowed in subquery. Is there any way to get around that message to link to it directly or does anyone have ANY clue why these fields are coming back blank? I am at wits end here!

  (programming Android in Eclipse) I am trying to set up a delay in changing the text in a button. I am getting errors only after there is a delay and the text needs to be changed.   It says in /library article /9s7c9wdw : "You can start this tool [cl.exe] only from the Visual Studio command prompt. You cannot start it from a system command prompt or from Windows Explorer." The corresponding (v=VS.80) page geared towards Visual Studio 2005 makes no such mention. Moreover, there is this Q&A. Thing is: Why should anybody spend anything on VS? ml is provided free of charge- necessarily so since it poses no value addition. The combined size of the other two is 895kb. Uncompressed. The GUI is a disservice. I myself have found half a dozen bugs. However, if the above is true, you'd need the IDE. MSFT fanboys, please step up. Background is that I have the 2008 Pro ed. The official Firefox builds use VS 2005 which I have on another system. To me no redundancy is acceptable. That's when I started pondering about boiling down VS and merely copying over the essential binaries. Then extended the thought to synthetically updating V$.

• jquery ui css not loading and creating poblems with asp.net mvc3 page (unexpected token error)

  hi, So I suspect Im doing something silly, but first off, I can see that my mvc3 project already had jquery ui in it but no theme css files. I needed a date picked and as usual needed to override the EditorFor DateTime. I started off today by just using the default jquery ui js files supplied with the project under scripts. The date picker shows up fine, only with a completed messed up UI based on Site.css. So now I downloaded a build of jquery (with the start theme) and followed this page about how to put it together. • What setting needs to be made to make .Net Automation responsive?

  Have an app that is looking for application windows being created on the desktop using class Unresponsive { private StructureChangedEventHandler m_UIAeventHandler = new StructureChangedEventHandler(OnStructureChanged); public Unresponsive() { Automation.AddStructureChangedEventHandler(AutomationElement.RootElement, TreeScope.Children, m_UIAeventHandler); } private void OnStructureChanged(object sender, StructureChangedEventArgs e) { Debug.WriteLine("Change event"); } } You can see the same issue using UISpy.exe, selecting the desktop and configuring scope for children and just the structure changed event. The problem I'm trying to resolve is that the events are not raised in a timely manner, there seems to be some grouping/delay which makes the app appear to be non responsive. If you start a new app with 1 window and wait a second you get the event, seems alright. If you start the same app several times without delay (say clicking on quickstart), it's not until all of the instances of the app get 'initialised' by the AutomationProxies that you get the notice for the first app (and in short order the other apps/windows). I've sat watching task manager as each instance of the app starts to grow as it is initialised, waiting until the last app is done and then seeing the events all come in. Similarly any time any apps are starting windows within a timeframe there seems to be some blocking. I can't see how to configure this timeframe, or get each structure changed event to be sent on as soon as it happens. Also, this process of listening for structure changed events seems to be leaking, just by listening there is a leak in native memory. (visible in UISpy and my app)

• Stack Overflow like Watermarks in Forms

  Hey people, I remember seeing a tutorial somewhere that talks of how to style your input forms in a more "usable" way. Essentially, you have a placeholder value and when you enter the input, it hides the hint so to speak. Now, just to be clear: I don't want the hint (placeholder value text) to disappear onFocus, but rather to go lighter when I first start typing something. Good e.gs: Check out the forms on Aardvark http://vark.com/. This is exactly how I wish to have my input forms. Our very own stackoverflow. When you try to ask a question, on clicking inside any input form, it doesn't hide the text right away. You see your cursor as well as the hint. but when you start to type, it hides the hint(I would prefer having it go to a much lighter shade rather than hiding all together, like above example). I remember very clearly reading a tutorial somewhere on the interwebz with this exact requirement, but darn forgot to bookmark it. Any suggestions/links?
