  • Backward compatibility with event-sourcing

    How do you stay backward compatible with event-sourcing? Let say you release a version that has one kind of event, let call it X. You know how to handle that event in all the systems that extracts the events from the event source. In a later release you make a change to event X or delete it, how do you stay backward compatible with that? To have a fully functional system you need to be able to handle the old event as the same time as you need to handle the updated version. Or if you delete that event type, then you will be stuck with code that is only there to handle legacy events which in my head can be a little bit messy in the long run.

  • Can't install fglrx on Kernel 3.11.0-12

    I'm running Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 on a Sony Vaio laptop. I tried to install the newest fglrx driver from the cchtml.com guide but no matter which version I use (13.4 or even 13.9) the installation of the generated .debs fails with this message: Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.11.0-12-generic (x86_64) This seems to be a confirmed bug on launchpad. Currently I'm running the Radeon SI driver but I really need some 3D acceleration. What is there I can do to install any version of fglrx correctly or to speed up the bug-fixing-process? How long does the fixing of these bugs usually take?

  • Installing the Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio March 2011 and SDK 1.4

    Coming from the joys and new features the SDK 1.3 version gave us back in November/December, we are now again at the doors of another update, Version 1.4 To get it, go to the Windows Azure website, the click on the Develop Menu option.  Once there, Click on the Get Tools & SDK button. This will start the download to activate the Web Platform Installer, when you review the information on it, you get this. Click Install. And Accept the EULA. Installation starts at this point. And you are finished. More to come on the changes this addresses.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 GTK Problem

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and compiled and installed GTK 3.4 to go through some GTK developer tutorials. Installing this version of GTK has caused problems with Unity. All system dialogs and top bar now have a different (older) look, and when I try to launch Nautilus I get the following message: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension Initializing nautilus-dropbox 1.4.0 Initializing nautilus-gdu extension nautilus: symbol lookup error: nautilus: undefined symbol: ubuntu_menu_proxy_get I have run make uninstall on the newer version of GTK and reinstalled just about every package I can think of, but I am still having the same problem. How can I repair the default Ubuntu GTK libraries? EDIT Also, I noticed that my desktop icons are gone (launcher works), and I can't interact with the desktop. I can't drag any shortcuts to it, etc.

    When I worked in Microsoft on MSE antivirus, we had several stages of pre-release: Alpha, Beta, RC. The biggest difference between these stages were bug fixes. Each time we fixed more bugs, and usually updated some minor features. Apple works in the same way. Look here: http://www.techrepublic.com/article/pro-tip-how-to-create-a-bootable-usb-installer-for-os-x-yosemite/ They released a beta of Yosemite OS, but the beta is full of bugs. Why do these big companies work like this? Isn't it better to release a beta version that was tested very thoroughly but one that just doesn't provide all the features that the final version will provide?

  • Windows Azure SDK 1.2 Available - .NET 4.0 Support

    The Windows Azure team had just announced the release of the latest version of its tools and SDK (v1.2) at the TechED 2010 New Orleans. You can download it here. The biggest new feature/improvement of this version of the SDK would be Visual Studio 2010 RTM and .NET 4.0 support. It gives us the facilities to build our azure-based applications on top of .NET 3.5 and 4.0 as well. So the guys who is working on, like me, or is going to be working on .NET 4 would better to have this SDK installed I think.   • Window decoration of emacs23 window on fluxbox is outside screen

    I am starting emacs remotely over an ssh connection. But on the emacs window I cannot find a way to resize or move it. There is no fluxbox title bar visible, and I guess the title bar is above the visible viewport, because emacs starts vertically with more height than the screen has. The lower border of the emacs window is also below the viewport border, so I cannot resize the window.     I have tried installing age of empires 2 using PlayOnLinux, the installation appeared to go fine but when I try and open the game it says there is a serious fault.   • Remote synchronization

    Hi all, today we would like to show you another improvement we have prepared for NetBeans 7.2. Today, let's talk a little bit about remote synchronization. If you already use our simple (S)FTP client, this enhancement could be useful for you. Simply right click on Source Files and select Synchronize. Please notice that the remote synchronization works better only on the whole project (it means that the Source Files must be selected). The Synchronize action is also available on individual files (more files can be selected at once) but the suggested operation (download, upload etc.) does not work so precisely. Also please notice that the suggested operations are not 100% reliable since the timestamps provided by FTP servers are not exact. Once the remote files (their names and paths only, of course) are fetched, the main dialog appears: As you can see, NetBeans tries to suggest you operations (upload, download etc.) which should be done for each individual file of your project. If you are interested only in some particular changes, you can simply filter the list: Since we have a file conflict, we need to resolve it first. Fortunately this is very easy because we just select the desired file and click the Diff button . The remote version of our file is downloaded and compared with the local version. The resut is displayed in the dialog where you can easily apply and/or refuse the remote changes or even simply type manually to the local version of the selected file: Once we are done with our changes, the operation for the selected file changes to Upload and the file is marked with * (since we made some changes). Please notice that if you now click the Cancel button, in fact no changes are done in our local file. As you can see, if we have one or more files selected, we can change their operation to: no operation (file won't be synchronized) download upload delete (both local and remote file) reset (the operation is resetted to the original one suggested by NetBeans and also all changes done via Diff action are discarded) Now we are ready to synchronize our project. NetBeans will show us the synchronization summary (this dialog can be omitted, see the Show Summary checkbox on the previous image). The synchronization itself starts and we can see its progress and of course its result. As always, all the operations can be reviewed in the Output window. That's all for today, as always, please test it and report all the issues or enhancements you find in NetBeans BugZilla (component php, subcomponent FTP support).

    I have a website with two versions, one for production and one for development (testing new features). All of the code is under version control and the websites are on separate servers. Currently, I have the same Google Analytics Tracking code used on both sites. Since the code is under version control, it would be ideal to either have an if I am on production, use this code; else if on development server use that code clause. But I suspect that Google makes it easier to do something like this. I see that there are many ways to configure a GA tracking code, e.g. "a single domain" vs. "multiple top level domains". But it is not clear to me how to set this up. Also, if tracking code configured for a single domain has been on the development server, have I been picking up traffic to both sites, or does GA just ignore the second domain that I haven't registered?

    I have a document (LibreOffice Calc Spreadsheet) which is in my ~/Documents folder. However, I have the same file (older version of it) on a mounted drive. In the past few weeks I have opened the file from both my ~/Documents folder and from the mounted drive. However, the latest version is the one from ~/Documents. When I open the Dash and look in the documents lens, of course I will find my file twice there. One from the mounted disk and one from ~/Documents. But I don't know which one is which. So, my question is: How can I limit the document lens to look for documents only from my /home. Or to exclude mounted disks from the search. Thanks. I use Ubuntu 12.04.

    For those who are not familiar with this add-in, the OLAP PivotTable Extensions add features of interest to Excel 2007 or 2010 PivotTables pointing to an OLAP cube in Analysis Services. One of these features I like very much, is to know the MDX query code associated with the pivot used at that time in Excel: You can find all the details here: http://olappivottableextend.codeplex.com/ It was recently released a new version of the add-in (version 0.7.4), which does not introduce any new features, but fixes a significant bug: Release 0.7.4 now properly handles languages but introduces no new features. International users who run a different Windows language than their Excel UI language may be receiving an error message when they double click a cell and perform drillthrough which reads: "XML for Analysis parser: The LocaleIdentifier property is not overwritable and cannot be assigned a new value". This error was caused by OLAP PivotTable Extensions in some situations, but release 0.7.4 fixes this problem. Enjoy!

    I am developing a site with a mobile version and am trying to figure the appropriate way to manage the URLs for search engines. So far I've considered: Having a separate mobile site (m.example.com) with rel="canonical" links to the regular site. Putting both the mobile site and full site on one URL (example.com), and doing user agent sniffing. Another opinion: Spencer: "If you have a mobile site at a separate location or URL, you should 301 redirect each and every mobile page to its corresponding page on your main website. Employ user agent detection so that the mobile optimized version is served up if someone's coming in from a hand-held. - http://developer.practicalecommerce.com/articles/1722-Mobile-site-Development-Best-Practices-for-SEO-Usability Both 2 and 3 make it hard for a user who wants to switch to the full site or mobile site manually, but I'm not sure 1 is the best alternative.     How can I install Disastry's version of PGP 2.6.3ia-multi06 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS? His site with the source code is here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/disastry/263multi.htm He already compiled a unix version of pgp and it's in the Linux section of his download. How can I either copy and install the binary PGP file, or compile it from the source and install. I have tried several different ways, get no error messages, but when I type pgp -h at the command line, Ubuntu tells me that pgp is not installed. (I already have truecrypt 7.1a and gnupg 1.4.16 installed, but still like the old pgp I have on windows) Thanks! traveler

  • How to deal with D3DX .dll hell?

    There's a large number of versions of the D3DX dll, from each SDK update, each version having a unique name (http://www.toymaker.info/Games/html/d3dx_dlls.html). All-too-often, people have versions missing. So even though they have a compatible version of DirectX, your D3D-based project won't run on their machine. I want to be able to distribute games (little spare-time projects, game jam entries, etc) as a simple zip file, without the need for an installer. But a significant percentage of users run into missing D3DX .dll errors. And without an installer, Microsoft's official solution (the DirectX web installer/updater) isn't really much of a solution. Unfortunately, Microsoft still won't give us the option of static linking to D3DX (which would be a nice clean solution). And avoiding using D3DX isn't very practical, especially if you're working with shaders (and no, I'm not switching to OpenGL, at least for now) Does anyone have clever solutions to avoiding this DLL hell?

    So I have a SL Copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard.DMG and I am running Ubuntu 12.0.4. I tried burn the DMG to a DVD using CD/DVD Creator however when I try, it comes up with a message saying 'The size of the file is over 2 GiB. Files larger than 2 GiB are not supported by the ISO9660 standard in its first and second versions (the most widespread ones). It is recommended to use the third version of the ISO9660 standard, which is supported by most operating systems, including Linux and all versions of Windows™. However, Mac OS X cannot read images created with version 3 of the ISO9660 standard.' How do I bypass this so my DVD is bootable on my iMac. By the way, I'm running Ubuntu on the iMac and it is my only partition. No other OS Installed
