• Which shared-hosting service can provide at least 80MB of memory to PHP scripts?

  An open source PHP package that I'm using requires 80M of memory (i.e., must set memory_limit = 80M in php.ini). I was thinking of using one of the cheap 1&1 packages but they are limited to 40M. Do you happen to know of other hosts which can provide this amount of memory for $10/month or less? Thanks.

  I have a dedicated windows 2008 server and with Allocated monthly traffic: 1500GB, the hosting company sent me "Please take note that the allocated traffic included with your Budget (calculated by GB of traffic) has been exceeded. You will be billed for the exceeding traffic at the end of the month according to the per GB exceeding traffic fee specified on your contract." I checked my Google analytics account and didn't find any big different for the websites traffic this month than previous months. I just want to understand what may cause this sudden increase in traffic this month? may be ftp access? remoting to webserver too much time? or what may cause this? Also, is there any tool in the server to know where the traffic went?

• Reducing latency for different geographic regions on Amazon Cloud

  I have got an application which has three components Application code : Amazon EC2 US-EAST-1 instance Application images, and other static data : Amazon S3 with CloudFront Application Database : Amazon RDS In short i need something like Cloud Front for EC2. In long, people using this application from a different region say middle east will have faster static content downloading due to Cloud Front but there would be a lot of latency in communicating to EC2 instance. I want to use a budget friendly way of enhancing this. Launching Amazon Instances in every region that offer is sure a choice, but isn't really cheap, so would try to avoid it unless its last resort. Also say if my clients also need to communicate to the RDS database directly, is there some kind of solution which gives that kind of functionality mentioned above, but for RDS?

  I am building a solution where the CMS part of the site (i.e. About US, Contact etc) will be run on Wordpress & the private pages will be a Java-Servlet based stack run on Tomcat 7. Both of these "apps" have to run on the same server for budget reasons, at least for now. What I want to know how to make this happen (via configurations, setups etc)? So that whenever users come to public pages they will be served content from Wordpress but for private pages (here I am assuming there will be a URL pattern differentiating this) then it will be served by Tomcat I am assuming here that I will be using Apache as the server for fronting the wordpress requests. Also it is an Ubuntu 12.04 server.

  I'm using the following Amazon EC2 resources in the US East (Virginia) region: 1 Running Instance 1 Elastic IP 2 EBS Volumes 100 EBS Snapshots 1 Key Pair 2 Security Groups 5 My Own AMIs (customized based on my application stack) My instance is based on Linux distribution (CentOS) and my AMIs are S3-backed. Both EBS volumes are mounted on this running instance. We're planning to migrate our deployment to US-West region. Because Amazon EC2 resources are not shared across regions, my questions are: What are all the factors that I need to consider in advance? What are all the recommended & different ways of migrating each EC2 resources from one region to the other? Are there any hidden risks involved during and/or after the migration? Experts ideas/suggestions/recommendations on this are highly appreciated.

• How to use private DNS to map private IP with "non registred" domain name

  I would like to use a private DNS (Route53 in our case) in order to map hosts to EC2 instance private IP addresse. The hosted zone we are using for testing is not declared in any registrar (company-test.com.). There are different servers (Nagios, Puppet, ActiveMQ ...) all hosted in ec2, that means their IP can change over time (restart, new instance launch...). That would be great if I can use DNS instead of clients' /etc/hosts for mapping private IP/internal domain name... The ActiveMQ server url is activemq.company-test.com and it maps to (A record) private IP address of the AMQ server. This url is only reachable by other ec2 owned by the same aws account. My question is how to configure ec2 instances so they could reach the ActiveMQ server WITHOUT having to buy a new domain company-test.com ?

Flickr, Picasa etc. are not optimal solutions because setting up accounts, sharing albums and navigating privacy settings is going to be overwhelming for some of the people. I just want to be able to give people a URL, a username, and password and have it be easy peasy. I want something very simple and easy to use (for the user) like MyTunesRSS. I've looked at a complete "social" solution like Elgg but that feels like using a cadillac to kill a fly. • What are the pros and cons of AWS Elastic Beanstalk compared with other deployment strategies?

  I'm pretty new to the whole Netflix OSS stack and deployments in general. As a background for my current level of knowledge ops-wise, my main role is as a front-end application engineer. However, I enjoy the operations side of things, so I'm attempting to setup a new deployment strategy and the tooling for a new project. Our Goals Super easy deploys (we want to push a button to update production) Automated deploys to test environments (using Jenkins) Ease of maintenance (we have an app to write, don't want to spend our time fiddling with production issues) Ability to handle a service oriented architecture (many small apps, various languages and data stores) Enough flexibility to ensure we won't have to change strategies any time soon (we're already trying to get away from RightScale) We're OK with a little more initial setup time if doing so will save us some headaches in the future. So, along these lines, I've been listening to podcasts, watching Ops talks, and reading tons of blog posts and based on our goals and what I've taken to be some forming best practices, we've started forming a plan using Asgard, rolling our package into a jar and rolling that into an AMI. We had this all planned out and like the advantages the process versus using a Chef server and converging instances on the fly (we felt this was error prone given our limited timeline and lack of understanding around a Chef server workflow). However, a coworker did a little looking around on his own and felt like Elastic Beanstalk met our needs. I've looked into it and spun up a test environment with a WAR file and an attached RDS database. Things seem to work and I believe that we can automate deploys to a testing environment using Jenkins via the AWS API. Seems simple enough... perhaps too simple. What I'm wondering is, what's the catch? If Elastic Beanstalk is so simple and effective, why isn't it talked about more? I'm having a hard time finding enough objective opinions and facts about the two different deployment strategies, so I thought I'd ask around. Do you use Elastic Beanstalk? If so, why and what factors lead to that decision? What do you like and dislike? If you don't use Elastic Beanstalk but considered it, what do you use and why didn't you use Elastic Beanstalk? What are the advantages and disadvantages to a Elastic Beanstalk based deployment strategy for an SOA? That is, will Elastic Beanstalk work well with many small applications that rely on each other to work?

But when i try to use a php script to connect to the AWS rds server, it gave me SQLSTATE[HY000] [2003] Can't connect to MySQL server on (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx). • Why is Safari on my computer rendering all of the colors -- not just for images -- incorrectly?

  I’m not just talking about image color profile issues; every single color that the browser renders is incorrect. It’s like it’s in it’s own color space (or something!). Safari renders the same hex color completely differently. That color is set using a background-color declaration in CSS, so it should be identical in all four of those browsers.   I'm planning to host a website where in the first phase I would target 30,000 users. It is in php and runs on Apache server. I'm assuming 8,000 users can be online in worst case scenario and 1000 of them will be uploading photographs. A photograph will be resized to around 1MB at client side and one HTTP request is uploading only one photograph. My plan: 2 Small EC2 instances to run Apache httpd 2 Small EC2 instances to DB (Postgresql). I to write data and other its read replica. EBS volumes for DBs Last, Amazon S3 for uploaded photographs. My question here Is Small EC2 instance more than what I require. I mean should I go for micro Is 8000 simultaneous user a right no. (to decide what EC2 instance to choose) for a new website Or should I go for Small instance so to make it capable of spikes

• Certain web pages are suddenly not rendering properly in FireFox

  I am using FireFox 3.6.3. I noticed in the last couple of days that several webpages which I visit regularly are not rendering properly. A lot of the text is overlapping with other text and it basically looks like the style sheet is completely screwed up. I have tried disabling all of my Add-Ons and it doesn't make a difference. When I use Coral IE Tab to render the pages using IE they display without any problems. The websites which are not rending properly for me are: The Age Google Reader One interesting thing I noticed is that if I modify the Google Reader URL to not use SSL (i.e. change https to http) it renders without any issues. However, The Age website is not using SSL, and that still doesn't render properly. I have also disabled my Proxy Server (I normally use one at work) but this doesn't make a difference either.

  Too sad this topic was closed. But I'm kind of a having the same question. I want to construct xpathes, for common html block which appears on page. For example: you can give two URLs to that software, which will contain SAME html blocks (divs) , but having different content in it. by giving 2 stackoverflow.com url's, software could detect that same div#id is being used once again, and just give XPATH'es of those html blocks like for example. Of course I can find xpath'es my self, as far as I remember, firebug makes it easy,shows xpath of every html block, but this is kind of hard procedure if you want to get xpath'es for LOTS of html elements. so that's why I want this kind of software to help in this routine.

  I am helping a friend with his website, and am having a problem with his webmail configuration, which I suspect is due to a misconfigured MX record. His domain is registered and hosted by hostmonster, they have a webmail option. A record: Host Points To TTL webmail 12.345.789.101 14400 CNAME: mail webmail.d.com 14400 MX Record: 0 @ mail.d.com 14400 I've created an email account on hostmonster, [email protected]: however, when I sent an email to this account, it appears to be routing to /dev/null. I know that it's not actually, but am unsure of the steps I can take to track this down? I've tried using dig, but am unsure where to start. How can I track down where this email is being routed to?

  I've got some puzzling (at least to me) errors that show up in my webserver logs. What's puzzling is that they show my error page being referenced, but that error page doesn't show up as being displayed in hits on statcounter.com. Can someone tell me the difference in these two kinds of errors? Or is only one a "real" error? This is in WordPress, and I have my 404.php file in my theme redirecting to a static Wordpress page at mydomain.com/error/ These first two log entries show /error/, but a "hit" on my /error/ page doesn't show in my webstats.   I notice that EBS-backed AMIs are much like a VMWare instances -- I can stop them and also persist them to disk, and all this is done relatively quickly. However, I believe that S3 backed machines are different. They cannot be 'stopped', but rather can only be shut-down, written to S3 disk and started up again; with at least a 15 min delay in doing so. Why the difference? How do AMI providers decide whether to use EBS or S3? If I need to stop/persist/restart machines relatively frequently, then I am implicitly limited to just the EBS-backed machines?

• AWS SSL Load Balancer

  OK, I am looking for some pointers. Basically I have a white-label app/site that will allow users to setup their own domain to use for their customer front-end. We have 2 dedicated servers and a load balancer. The problem is SSL, we were thinking about using AWS ELB to handle the SSL loadbalancing, but cant seem to figure out if it will properly handle it, it seems to be setup to work with EC2 instances, but we are using externally hosted servers via a loadbalancer. A blog post by AWS looks similar to what we need but it only seems to work with EC2 instances. http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2011/08/elastic-load-balancer-ssl-support-options.html Anyone had experience setting ELS SSL load balancers up to work with external servers?

• Adsense-type services without the content check?

  Are there any ad-placing services that don't mind that the page is nothing but a page of ads? Someone else with a .cn tld is pointing to my IP address. I currently have that site on its own name based virtual host that responds to every request with a 403, but I figure if I am paying for the incoming bandwidth, I might as well try to make some money off it. I don't want to actually create any content for this site, which prevents me from using adsense. My only requirements are that it is free for me to sign up and that they don't mind the lack of content.

We would like to use a DNS service to direct users to the nearest server, but can't find any. Does anyone have an recommendations for solutions.
