  • Power Analysis in [R] for Two-Way Anova

    - by Thomas
I am trying to calculate the necessary sample size for a 2x2 factorial design. I have two questions. 1) I am using the package pwr and the one way anova function to calculate the necessary sample size using the following code pwr.anova.test(k = , n = , f = , sig.level = , power = ) However, I would like to look at two way anova, since this is more efficient at estimating group means than one way anova. There is no two-way anova function that I could find. Is there a package or routine in [R] to do this? 2) Moreover, am I safe in assuming that since I am using a one-way anova power calculations, that the sample size will be more conservative (i.e. larger)?

  • Idiomatic use of auto_ptr to transfer ownership to a container

    - by heycam
I'm refreshing my C++ knowledge after not having used it in anger for a number of years. In writing some code to implement some data structure for practice, I wanted to make sure that my code was exception safe. So I've tried to use std::auto_ptrs in what I think is an appropriate way. Simplifying somewhat, this is what I have: class Tree { public: ~Tree() { /* delete all Node*s in the tree */ } void insert(const string& to_insert); ... private: struct Node { ... vector<Node*> m_children; }; Node* m_root; }; template<T> void push_back(vector<T*>& v, auto_ptr<T> x) { v.push_back(x.get()); x.release(); } void Tree::insert(const string& to_insert) { Node* n = ...; // find where to insert the new node ... push_back(n->m_children, auto_ptr<Node>(new Node(to_insert)); ... } So I'm wrapping the function that would put the pointer into the container, vector::push_back, and relying on the by-value auto_ptr argument to ensure that the Node* is deleted if the vector resize fails. Is this an idiomatic use of auto_ptr to save a bit of boilerplate in my Tree::insert? Any improvements you can suggest? Otherwise I'd have to have something like: Node* n = ...; // find where to insert the new node auto_ptr<Node> new_node(new Node(to_insert)); n->m_children.push_back(new_node.get()); new_node.release(); which kind of clutters up what would have been a single line of code if I wasn't worrying about exception safety and a memory leak. (Actually I was wondering if I could post my whole code sample (about 300 lines) and ask people to critique it for idiomatic C++ usage in general, but I'm not sure whether that kind of question is appropriate on stackoverflow.)

  • How do I join two git repos without a common root, where all modified files are the same?

    - by Evan Carroll
I have a git-cpan-init of a repo which yielded a different root node from another already established git repo I found on github C:A:S:DBI. I've developed quite a bit on my repo, and I'd like to merge or replay my edits on a fork of the more authoritative repository. Does anyone know how to do this? I think it is safe to assume none of the file-contents of the modified files are different -- the code base hasn't been since Nov 08'. For clarity the git hub repo is the authoritative one. My local repo is the one I want to go up to git hub shown as a real git fork.

  • OCCI createEnvironment Blocks My Thread

    - by sahs
Hello, I'm writing a multi-threaded application, where there is a main thread which distributes tasks to the worker threads. According to the task, a worker thread creates a connection, by using a global occi environment. When a worker thread completes its task, it closes the connection (I'm sure, there is no exception thrown while termination). My problem is that after a while(sometimes 5 mins, sometimes 5 hours) the threads cannot get connection from the environment, and they get blocked there. What can be the problem?

  • Running Java CORBA Client on Unix

    - by Benny
I'm trying to run a Java application I wrote to subscribe to a CORBA event service. It runs OK on my Windows machine, but as soon as I deploy it to the UNIX server, it gives me an org.omg.CORBA.NO_IMPLEMENT exception. Any ideas as to why this might be happening? I'm using JacORB on my Windows machine and passing VM arguments to initialize the client ORB, but I'm not sure how to do that on UNIX and if it's even necessary. Thanks in advance!

  • Again, what version control system to choose?

    - by Ivan
Please excuse me for probably a newbie hundred-times-chewed question. I have no experience with version control systems except of using Visual Source Safe in a project done by 2 people sitting in front of each other (which has shown VSS quite sack of boulders, not anything useful). Right now I am looking to grok-in using some modern VCS. Here are the preferences in descending priority order: Platform-agnostic. Pretty pleasant to use With Visual Studio 2010 on Windows as well as With NetBeans 6.9 and Eclipse 3.6 on Linux and Mac. Convenient and efficient for mutually-dependent projects done by teams of 1-10 and consisting of files of quite a diverse selection of types. Including early-stage projects with unstable design and experimenting. Modern. As fresh and future-technology-feature-rich as possible. Free & open-source. Should I take a closer look at SVN, Mercurial, GIT, Bazaar, or something else?

  • When to throw exceptions?

    - by FRKT
Exceptions are wonderful things, but I sometimes worry that I throw too many. Consider this example: Class User { public function User(user){ // Query database for user data if(!user) throw new ExistenceException('User not found'); } } I'd argue that it makes as much sense to simply return false (or set all user data to false in this case), rather than throwing an exception. Which do you prefer?

  • JSON and WebOS simple example?

    - by user558361
I have been following this tutorial http://tinyurl.com/327p325 which has been GREAT up until this point where I can't get his code to work. I get the list working with static items but I can't get it to work with the json items. I've tried to simplify it with what I really want it to do to try and debug what is wrong (also if someone could please tell me how to view the Mojo log that would be awesome) In the tutorial he has to use the yahoo service to convert the site into json data, while the site I want to interact with already has json data generated so this is what I have PageAssistant.prototype.setup = function() { this.myListModel = { items : [] }; this.myListAttr = { itemTemplate: "page/itemTemplate", renderLimit: 20, }; this.controller.setupWidget("MyList",this.myListAttr,this.myListModel); this.controller.setupWidget("search_divSpinner", { spinnerSize : "large" }, { spinning: true } ); }; PageAssistant.prototype.activate = function(event) { this.getData(); }; PageAssistant.prototype.getData = function () { // the spinner doesn't show up at all $("search_divScrim").show(); var url = "http://www.website.com/.json"; var request = new Ajax.Request(url, { method: 'get', asynchronous: true, evalJSON: "false", onSuccess: this.parseResult.bind(this), on0: function (ajaxResponse) { // connection failed, typically because the server is overloaded or has gone down since the page loaded Mojo.Log.error("Connection failed"); }, onFailure: function(response) { // Request failed (404, that sort of thing) Mojo.Log.error("Request failed"); }, onException: function(request, ex) { // An exception was thrown Mojo.Log.error("Exception"); }, }); } PageAssistant.prototype.parseResult = function (transport){ var newData = []; var theStuff=transport.responseText; try { var json = theStuff.evalJSON(); } catch(e) { Mojo.Log.error(e); } // this is where I believe I am wrong for (j=0;j < json.data.count;j++) { var thread=json.data.children[j]; newData[j] = { title: thread.data.author }; } this.myListModel["items"] = newData; this.controller.modelChanged(this.myListModel , this); $("search_divScrim").hide(); } So where I commented that I believe I am wrong I am just trying to get the title out of this json data { kind: Listing data: { children: [ { kind: food data: { author: Foodmaster hidden: false title: You should eat this } }, // then it repeats with the kind: and data Anyone see where I went wrong? I would like to know how to view the log as I have log events but can't figure out where to look to see if any of them are being thrown.

  • Destructor - does it get called if the app crashes

    - by Antonio Nakic Alfirevic
Does a destructor get called if the app crashes? If it's an unhandled exception I'm guessing it does, but what about more serious errors, or something like a user killing the application process? And a few more potentially dumb questions: what happens to all the objects in an app when the app exits and all finalizers have been executed - do the objects get garbage collected or are they somehow all "unloaded" with the process or appdomain? is the garbage collector part of each application (runs in the same process) or is it independent?

  • Loading jar file using JCL(JarClassLoader ) : classpath in manifest is ignored ..

    - by Xinus
I am trying to load jar file using JCL using following code FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(new File( "C:\\Users\\sunils\\glassfish-tests\\working\\test.jar") ); JarClassLoader jc = new JarClassLoader( ); jc.add(fis); Class main = jc.loadClass( "highmark.test.Main" ); String[] str={}; main.getMethod("test").invoke(null);//.getDeclaredMethod("main",String[].class).invoke(null,str); fis.close(); But when I try to run this program I get Exception as Exception in thread "main" java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Unknown Source) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Unknown Source) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Unknown Source) at Main.main(Main.java:21) Caused by: java.lang.RuntimeException: Embedded startup not found, classpath is probably incomplete at org.glassfish.api.embedded.Server.<init>(Server.java:292) at org.glassfish.api.embedded.Server.<init>(Server.java:75) at org.glassfish.api.embedded.Server$Builder.build(Server.java:185) at org.glassfish.api.embedded.Server$Builder.build(Server.java:167) at highmark.test.Main.test(Main.java:33) ... 5 more According to this it is not able to locate class, But when I run the jar file explicitly it runs fine. It seems like JCL is ignoring other classes present in the jar file, MANIFEST.MF file in jar file shows: Manifest-Version: 1.0 Class-Path: . Main-Class: highmark.test.Main It seems to be ignoring Class-Path: . , This jar file runs fine when I run it using Java explicitly, This is just a test, in reality this jar file is coming as a InputStream and it cannot be stored in filesystem, How can I overcome this problem , Is there any workaround ?
