  • Using an HTML Textbox in place of an ASP.NET TextBox

    - by Velika
    If I add this to the ASPX page: <input id="Text1" type="text" value="Text1Value" /> I would expect to see "Text1" in the list of Request Form keys even WITHOUT setting the runat=Server property. ? request.Form.AllKeys I realize that if I do set that propery, then I will have a server-sided HTML control that I can reference using the name "Text1," but shouldn't I be able to access the text in the text box using the following VB.NET syntax? request.Form("Text1")

How to show it with customized fontsize option? For sample, I want to show inside the fontsize dropdownlist just the options from 8 to 16. Thank you Josi

  • Javascript to convert Markdown/Textile to HTML (and, ideally, back to Markdown/Textile)

    - by Horace Loeb
    There are several good Javascript editors for Markdown / Textile (e.g.: http://attacklab.net/showdown/, the one I'm using right now), but all I need is a Javascript function that converts a string from Markdown / Textile - HTML and back. What's the best way to do this? (Ideally it would be jQuery-friendly -- e.g., $("#editor").markdown_to_html()) Edit: Another way to put it is that I'm looking for a Javascript implementation of Rails' textilize() and markdown() text helpers

  • How much abstraction is too much?

    - by Daniel Bingham
    In an Object Oriented Program: How much abstraction is too much? How much is just right? I have always been a nuts and bolts kind of guy. I understood the concept behind high levels of encapsulation and abstraction, but always felt instinctively that adding too much would just confuse the program. I always tried to shoot for an amount of abstraction that left no empty classes or layers. And where in doubt, instead of adding a new layer to the hierarchy, I would try and fit something into the existing layers. However, recently I've been encountering more highly abstracted systems. Systems where everything that could require a representation later in the hierarchy gets one up front. This leads to a lot of empty layers, which at first seems like bad design. However, on second thought I've come to realize that leaving those empty layers gives you more places to hook into in the future with out much refactoring. It leaves you greater ability to add new functionality on top of the old with out doing nearly as much work to adjust the old. The two risks of this seem to be that you could get the layers you need wrong. In this case one would wind up still needing to do substantial refactoring to extend the code and would still have a ton of never used layers. But depending on how much time you spend coming up with the initial abstractions, the chance of screwing it up, and the time that could be saved later if you get it right - it may still be worth it to try. The other risk I can think of is the risk of over doing it and never needing all the extra layers. But is that really so bad? Are extra class layers really so expensive that it is much of a loss if they are never used? The biggest expense and loss here would be time that is lost up front coming up with the layers. But much of that time still might be saved later when one can work with the abstracted code rather than more low level code. So when is it too much? At what point do the empty layers and extra "might need" abstractions become overkill? How little is too little? Where's the sweet spot? Are there any dependable rules of thumb you've found in the course of your career that help you judge the amount of abstraction needed?

  • How to extract innermost table from html file with the help of the html agility pack ?

    - by Harikrishna
    I am parsing the tabular information from the html file with the help of the html agility pack. Now I can do it and it works. But when the table what I want to extract is inner most. Or I don't know at which position it is in nested tables.And there can be any number of nested tables and from that I want to extract the information of the table which has column name name,address. Ex. <table> <tr><td>PHONE NO.</td><td>OTHER INFO.</td></tr> <tr><td> <table> <tr><td>AMOUNT</td></tr> <tr><td>50000</td></tr> <tr><td>80000</td></tr> </table> </td></tr> <tr><td> <table> <tr><td> <table> <tr><td> <table> <tr><td> NAME </td><td>ADDRESS</td> <tr><td> ABC </td><td> kfks </td> <tr><td> BCD </td><td> fdsa </td> </table> </tr></td> </table> </td></tr> </table> </td></tr> </table> There are many tables but I want to extract the table which has column name name,address. So what should I do ?

  • Strategy pattern and "action" classes explosion

    - by devoured elysium
    Is it bad policy to have lots of "work" classes(such as Strategy classes), that only do one thing? Let's assume I want to make a Monster class. Instead of just defining everything I want about the monster in one class, I will try to identify what are its main features, so I can define them in interfaces. That will allow to: Seal the class if I want. Later, other users can just create a new class and still have polymorphism by means of the interfaces I've defined. I don't have to worry how people (or myself) might want to change/add features to the base class in the future. All classes inherit from Object and they implement inheritance through interfaces, not from mother classes. Reuse the strategies I'm using with this monster for other members of my game world. Con: This model is rigid. Sometimes we would like to define something that is not easily achieved by just trying to put together this "building blocks". public class AlienMonster : IWalk, IRun, ISwim, IGrowl { IWalkStrategy _walkStrategy; IRunStrategy _runStrategy; ISwimStrategy _swimStrategy; IGrowlStrategy _growlStrategy; public Monster() { _walkStrategy = new FourFootWalkStrategy(); ...etc } public void Walk() { _walkStrategy.Walk(); } ...etc } My idea would be next to make a series of different Strategies that could be used by different monsters. On the other side, some of them could also be used for totally different purposes (i.e., I could have a tank that also "swims"). The only problem I see with this approach is that it could lead to a explosion of pure "method" classes, i.e., Strategy classes that have as only purpose make this or that other action. In the other hand, this kind of "modularity" would allow for high reuse of stratagies, sometimes even in totally different contexts. What is your opinion on this matter? Is this a valid reasoning? Is this over-engineering? Also, assuming we'd make the proper adjustments to the example I gave above, would it be better to define IWalk as: interface IWalk { void Walk(); } or interface IWalk { IWalkStrategy WalkStrategy { get; set; } //or something that ressembles this } being that doing this I wouldn't need to define the methods on Monster itself, I'd just have public getters for IWalkStrategy (this seems to go against the idea that you should encapsulate everything as much as you can!) Why? Thanks

  • Playing dynamically embedded sound object via Javascript

    - by Vikram Goyal
    I need to background load some WAV files for an HTML page using AJAX. I use AJAX to get the details of the WAV files, then use the embed tag, and I can confirm that the files have loaded successfully because when I set autostart to true, the files play. However, I need the files to play only when the user clicks on a button (or an event is fired). The following is my code to preload these files: function preloadMedia() { for(var i = 0; i < testQuestions.length; i++) { var soundEmbed = document.createElement("embed"); soundEmbed.setAttribute("src", "/media/sounds/" + testQuestions[i].mediaFile); soundEmbed.setAttribute("hidden", true); soundEmbed.setAttribute("id", testQuestions[i].id); soundEmbed.setAttribute("autostart", false); soundEmbed.setAttribute("width", 0); soundEmbed.setAttribute("height", 0); soundEmbed.setAttribute("enablejavascript", true); document.body.appendChild((soundEmbed)); } } I use the following code to play the file (based on what sound file that user wants to play) function soundPlay(which) { var sounder = document.getElementById(which); sounder.Play(); } Something is wrong here, as none of the browsers I have tested on play the files using the code above. There are no errors, and the code just returns. I would have left it at that (that is - I would have convinced the client to convert all WAV's to MP3 and use MooTools). But I realized that I could play the sound files, which were not dynamically embeded. Thus, the same soundPlay function would work for a file embeded in the following manner: <embed src="/media/sounds/hug_sw1.wav" id="sound2" width="0" heigh="0" autostart="false" enablejavascript="true"/> anywhere within the HTML. And it plays well in all the browsers. Anyone have a clue on this? Is this some sort of undocumented security restriction in all the browsers? (Please remember that the files do get preloaded dynamically, as I can confirm by setting the autostart property to true - They all play). Any help appreciated.

  • jQuery Datatables and ColumnFilterWidget integration issue

    - by user3520135
    I am trying to Place the ColumnFilterWidget plugin in the Header of the Datatables Table. Here are the changes i made in it : /** * Menu-based filter widgets based on distinct column values for a table. * * @class ColumnFilterWidgets * @constructor * @param {object} oDataTableSettings Settings for the target table. */ var ColumnFilterWidgets = function( oDataTableSettings ) { var me = this; var sExcludeList = ''; // me.$WidgetContainer = $( '<div class="column-filter-widgets"></div>' ); me.$WidgetContainer = $( '<tr class="head"></tr>' ); me.$MenuContainer = me.$WidgetContainer; me.$TermContainer = null; me.aoWidgets = []; me.sSeparator = ''; if ( 'oColumnFilterWidgets' in oDataTableSettings.oInit ) { if ( 'aiExclude' in oDataTableSettings.oInit.oColumnFilterWidgets ) { sExcludeList = '|' + oDataTableSettings.oInit.oColumnFilterWidgets.aiExclude.join( '|' ) + '|'; } if ( 'bGroupTerms' in oDataTableSettings.oInit.oColumnFilterWidgets && oDataTableSettings.oInit.oColumnFilterWidgets.bGroupTerms ) { me.$MenuContainer = $( '<div class="column-filter-widget-menus"></div>' ); me.$TermContainer = $( '<div class="column-filter-widget-selected-terms"></div>' ).hide(); } } // Add a widget for each visible and filtered column $.each( oDataTableSettings.aoColumns, function ( i, oColumn ) { var $columnTh = $( oColumn.nTh ); var $WidgetElem = $( '<th><div class="column-filter-widget"></div></th>' ); if ( oColumn.bVisible && sExcludeList.indexOf( '|' + i + '|' ) < 0 ) { me.aoWidgets.push( new ColumnFilterWidget( $WidgetElem, oDataTableSettings, i, me ) ); } me.$MenuContainer.append( $WidgetElem ); } ); if ( me.$TermContainer ) { me.$WidgetContainer.append( me.$MenuContainer ); me.$WidgetContainer.append( me.$TermContainer ); } oDataTableSettings.aoDrawCallback.push( { name: 'ColumnFilterWidgets', fn: function() { $.each( me.aoWidgets, function( i, oWidget ) { oWidget.fnDraw(); } ); } } ); return me; }; I added a extra <tr class='head'> inside the Datatable, and later on i am trying to append the Filters to that with attached to them,But instead of that it is creating new TR tag and then appending the filters in it. I even changed my dom of data tables to : dom: '<"clear">Cf<"clear">ltWrip', So the table elements should be there so that it can insert filters inside the head.

  • CSS Horizontal sub-menu

    - by Develman
    Hello, I am working on a horizontal CSS dropdown menu. It is still working nearly fine for IE 7, IE 8 , Firefox and Chrome. But I want to make the top <ul> to be on top level (e.g. z-index: 100). I want this because the top level <ul> has a graphical background and the dropdown is just styled with css and in the current way it is destroying the layout. HTML Code: <div id="mainMenu"> <ul> <li><a href="t1">TOP1<!--[if gt IE 6]><!--></a><!--<![endif]--> <!--[if lte IE 6]><table><tr><td><![endif]--> <ul> <li><a href="l1">LINK1</a></li> <li><a href="l2">LINK2</a></li> <li><a href="l3">LINK3</a></li> <li><a href="l4">LINK4</a></li> </ul> <!--[if lte IE 6]></td></tr></table></a><![endif]--> </li> <li class="center"><a href="t2">TOP2<!--[if gt IE 6]><!--></a><!--<![endif]--> <!--[if lte IE 6]><table><tr><td></td></tr></table></a><![endif]--></li> <li><a name="t3">TOP3<!--[if gt IE 6]><!--></a><!--<![endif]--> <!--[if lte IE 6]><table><tr><td><![endif]--> <ul class="last"> <li><a href="l5">LINK5</a></li> <li><a href="l6">LINK6</a></li> <li><a href="l7">LINK7</a></li> </ul> <!--[if lte IE 6]></td></tr></table></a><![endif]--> </li> </ul> </div> CSS Code /* style the outer div to give it width */ #mainMenu { position: absolute; margin-left: 6px; margin-top: 180px; } /* remove all the bullets, borders and padding from the default list styling */ #mainMenu ul { position: absolute; width: 494px; padding: 0; margin: 0; list-style-type: none; background: #FFF url(../images/mainMenu_bg.gif) no-repeat; } /* float the list to make it horizontal and a relative positon so that you can control the dropdown menu positon */ #mainMenu li { position: relative; float: left; padding-left: 5px; width: 160px; vertical-align: middle; text-align: left; } #mainMenu li.center { padding-left: 0px; text-align: center; } /* style the links for the top level */ #mainMenu a, #mainMenu a:visited { display: block; font: bold 12px/1em Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #FFF; text-decoration: none; height: 42px; line-height: 35px; } /* hide the sub levels and give them a positon absolute so that they take up no room */ #mainMenu ul ul { visibility: hidden; position: absolute; height: 0; top: 35px; left: -5px; width: 165px; } /* style the table so that it takes no part in the layout - required for IE to work */ #mainMenu table { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; } /* style the second level links */ #mainMenu ul ul a, #mainMenu ul ul a:visited { width: 165px; height: 20px; line-height: 19px; font: bold 10px Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; background: #EF7D0E; color: #FFF; text-align: left; padding: 6px 0 0 5px; border-top: 1px solid #C1650B; } #mainMenu ul ul.last a, #mainMenu ul ul.last a:visited { width: 162px; } /* style the top level hover */ #mainMenu a:hover, #mainMenu ul ul a:hover{ color: #FFF; text-decoration: underline; } #mainMenu :hover > a, #mainMenu ul ul :hover > a { color: #FFF; text-decoration: underline; } /* make the second level visible when hover on first level list OR link */ #mainMenu ul li:hover ul, #mainMenu ul a:hover ul{ visibility: visible; } I have still a problem with showing the table in IE 6 but my main problem here is to show the LINK1...6 under the TOP links. I have tried many settings with z-index but nothing worked here. I hope you can help me ;)

  • HTML::Mason file upload

    - by marghi
    Recently I've been trying to get some files uploaded on to my server in my HTML::Mason application. All good no problems there apparently Mason a filehandle directly in the argument. The problem is that I cannot retrieve the filename from that filehandle in a elegant way. One method of resolving this issue is parsing the filename on the client before sending it to the server and placing the extracted value in a hidden field so that it gets sent upon submit. BUT that is very unsafe!

  • Data denormalization and C# objects DB serialization

    - by Robert Koritnik
    I'm using a DB table with various different entities. This means that I can't have an arbitrary number of fields in it to save all kinds of different entities. I want instead save just the most important fields (dates, reference IDs - kind of foreign key to various other tables, most important text fields etc.) and an additional text field where I'd like to store more complete object data. the most obvious solution would be to use XML strings and store those. The second most obvious choice would be JSON, that usually shorter and probably also faster to serialize/deserialize... And is probably also faster. But is it really? My objects also wouldn't need to be strictly serializable, because JsonSerializer is usually able to serialize anything. Even anonymous objects, that may as well be used here. What would be the most optimal solution to solve this problem? Additional info My DB is highly normalised and I'm using Entity Framework, but for the purpose of having external super-fast fulltext search functionality I'm sacrificing a bit DB denormalisation. Just for the info I'm using SphinxSE on top of MySql. Sphinx would return row IDs that I would use to fast query my index optimised conglomerate table to get most important data from it much much faster than querying multiple tables all over my DB. My table would have columns like: RowID (auto increment) EntityID (of the actual entity - but not directly related because this would have to point to different tables) EntityType (so I would be able to get the actual entity if needed) DateAdded (record timestamp when it's been added into this table) Title Metadata (serialized data related to particular entity type) This table would be indexed with SPHINX indexer. When I would search for data using this indexer I would provide a series of EntityIDs and a limit date. Indexer would have to return a very limited paged amount of RowIDs ordered by DateAdded (descending). I would then just join these RowIDs to my table and get relevant results. So this won't actually be full text search but a filtering search. Getting RowIDs would be very fast this way and getting results back from the table would be much faster than comparing EntityIDs and DateAdded comparisons even though they would be properly indexed.

  • Is the design notion of layers contrived?

    - by Bruce
    Hi all I'm reading through Eric Evans' awesome work, Domain-Driven Design. However, I can't help feeling that the 'layers' model is contrived. To expand on that statement, it seems as if it tries to shoe-horn various concepts into a specific, neat model, that of layers talking to each other. It seems to me that the layers model is too simplified to actually capture the way that (good) software works. To expand further: Evans says: "Partition a complex program into layers. Develop a design within each layer that is cohesive and that depends only on the layers below. Follow standard architectural patterns to provide loose coupling to the layers above." Maybe I'm misunderstanding what 'depends' means, but as far as I can see, it can either mean a) Class X (in the UI for example) has a reference to a concrete class Y (in the main application) or b) Class X has a reference to a class Y-ish object providing class Y-ish services (ie a reference held as an interface). If it means (a), then this is clearly a bad thing, since it defeats re-using the UI as a front-end to some other application that provides Y-ish functionality. But if it means (b), then how is the UI any more dependent on the application, than the application is dependent on the UI? Both are decoupled from each other as much as they can be while still talking to each other. Evans' layer model of dependencies going one way seems too neat. First, isn't it more accurate to say that each area of the design provides a module that is pretty much an island to itself, and that ideally all communication is through interfaces, in a contract-driven/responsibility-driven paradigm? (ie, the 'dependency only on lower layers' is contrived). Likewise with the domain layer talking to the database - the domain layer is as decoupled (through DAO etc) from the database as the database is from the domain layer. Neither is dependent on the other, both can be swapped out. Second, the idea of a conceptual straight line (as in from one layer to the next) is artificial - isn't there more a network of intercommunicating but separate modules, including external services, utility services and so on, branching off at different angles? Thanks all - hoping that your responses can clarify my understanding on this..
