• IOS SDK : first advices for beginners

  I too often answer the same kind of questions regarding basic topics like memory management, UITableView, Interface Orientation, MVC, etc... I understand very well that everyone starting with that SDK is too exited about getting its hand on it but a few reading would save them hours of debugging and the frustration that come along with the feeling that "We miss something here". I'd like experience users to share the few small articles, white papers, docs, book chapters that helps other save their time and avoid frustration. My first vote would be for : IOS Memory Management Guide View Controller Programming Guide Table View Guide And as a General recommendation, read the Overview section that come along with every class documention in the reference library, they contains most of what you need to know to avoid big traps !

• Oracle, slow performance when using sub select

  I have a view that is very slow if you fetch all rows. But if I select a subset (providing an ID in the where clause) the performance is very good. I cannot hardcode the ID so I create a sub select to get the ID from another table. The sub select only returns one ID. Now the performance is very slow and it seems like Oracle is evaluating the whole view before using the where clause. Can I somehow help Oracle so SQL 2 and 3 have the same performance? I’m using Oracle 10g 1 slow select * from ci.my_slow_view 2 fast select * from ci.my_slow_view where id = 1; 3 slow select * from ci.my_slow_view where id in (select id from active_ids)

  Let's say we have a view V1 and V2 that is declared like: create view V2 as select V1.*, V2.C1, V2.C2, V2.C3 from V1 join V2 on V1.Key = V2.Key where bla-bla So V2 narrows down the result set of V1 and adds some joins. And there is a retrieval routine in C# IEnumerable<V1> GetData(MyFilter filter, MySortOrder order) {} I want to reuse with V2. Is it possible without performing joins in L2S rather than in database? Should i manually create a base class in the database context or something?

• Django: automatically import MEDIA_URL in context

  Hi, like exposed here, one can set a MEDIA_URL in settings.py (for example i'm pointing to Amazon S3) and serve the files in the view via {{ MEDIA_URL }}. Since MEDIA_URL is not automatically in the context, one have to manually add it to the context, so, for example, the following works: #views.py from django.shortcuts import render_to_response from django.template import RequestContext def test(request): return render_to_response('test.html', {}, context_instance=RequestContext(request)) This means that in each view.py file i have to add from django.template import RequestContext and in each response i have to explicitly specify context_instance=RequestContext(request). Is there a way to automatically (DRY) add MEDIA_URL to the default context? Thanks in advance.

Check out the problem: - Go to http://dev.imagineelection.com/browse/zip/10011 - Click on one of the warning icons (scroll down to see one). See how the colorbox that pops up is empty? I also created a detail view for the pins. Here comes the tricky part.   Hey all, I'm currently trying to create a Friendship domain object to link two User objects (with a bit of additional data: createDate, confirmedStatus). My domain model looks as follows class Friendship { User userOne User userTwo Boolean confirmed Date createDate Date lastModifiedDate static belongsTo = [userOne:User , userTwo:User] static constraints = { userOne() userTwo() confirmed() createDate() lastModifiedDate() } } I've also added the following entries to the user class static hasMany = [ friendships:Friendship ] static mappedBy = [ friendships:'userOne' , friendships:'userTwo' ] When I do this, the result is a new friendship created (and viewable through the controller) with both users listed in their respective places. When I view the details of userOne, I see the friedship listed. When I view the details of userTwo, no friendship is listed. This is not the behavior I expected. What am I doing incorrectly? Why can't I see the friendship listed under both users?

• Where to put a recursive function when following MVC?

  Hello, I have a recursive function being used to generate a menu on my site. The function is calling a database for each level of children in the menu, and generating html for them. I've currently put this function in a Model part of the code, however, I feel that generating html in the model goes against the MVC. I didn't put it in a Controller because I didn't want to have database calls or HTML generation there. I didn't put it in a View because I didn't want database calls there either. Is the 'correct' way of tackling this problem to have a Controller call a recursive function in a Model that returns a 2d array representing the menu. Then pass the array to a view which has it's own recursive function for generating html from the array?

• NHibernate does not update entity when repository is passed by constructor

  Hi everybody, I am developing with NHibernate for the first time in conjunction with ASP.NET MVC and StructureMap. The CodeCampServer serves as a great example for me. I really like the different concepts which were implemented there and I can learn a lot from it. In my controllers I use Constructur Dependency Injection to get an instance of the specific repository needed. • how rspec creates database between specs

  This is a bit of a naive / simple question. I'm having a hard time finding this info online. Basically, does rspec run rake db:test:prepare between every rspec group? Or is it between every example or model? Or does the schema get loaded once and then truncated between each. I need to add a rake task directly after this call to create a view since they are not supported in schema.rb. Either a link or explanation would be greatly appreciated so that I know where to insert my rake task to create a view. Or whether there is a callback like rake db:test:after_prepare thx

  I have a managed object with a dueDate attribute. The exception is thrown before either controller:didChangeObject:atIndexPath:forChangeType:newIndex or controller:didChangeSection:atIndex:forChangeType are called. At this point I'm stuck. If I change my sectionNameKeyPath to just "dueDate" then everything works fine. I think that's because the dueDate attribute never changes whereas the category will be different when read back after the finishedDate attribute changes. Please help! I'm able to send an email but I'm not getting the way that allows me to add my own signature. • iPhone/Obj-C - Archiving object causes lag

  Hi I have a table view, and when I delete a cell I am removing an item from an NSMutableArray, archiving that array, and removing the cell. However, when I do this, it is causing the delete button to lag after I click it. • 3D Camera looking at arbitrary point, but never rolling to do so

  (In C#/XNA 4.0) I have Vector3 cameraPosition, Vector3 targetPosition I want to have my camera look at the target, always 'facing' it, but never rolling So roll always is neutral, to view the target the camera always either adjusts pitch or yaw I've tried countless combinations of methods and information I find here and on the web but I haven't found anything that works properly. I think my issue may be my 'Up' vector (which I've tried .Up, 1,0,0, 0,1,0, 0,0,1) When I move my camera I do: CameraPosition += moveSpeed * vectorToAdd; UpdateViewMatrix(); UpdateViewMatrix() is.. well, I've tried everything I have seen. At most simple... View = Matrix.CreateLookAt(CameraPosition, targetPosition, upVector); Where upVector has been Vector3.Up, 1, 0, 0; 0, 1, 0; 0, 0, 1, or other more 'proper' attempts to get my actual up vector. This sounds like it's probably my problem.. This should be dead simple, help!

  I need to create a toplist in the page footer on a site that I'm building. The footer is created in the default SiteMesh layout template (views/layouts/main.gsp). In order to create the toplist access to the database is needed, so I've encapsulated all logic needed for the toplist creation in a service class (services/FooService). Please note that while services are usually accessed from the controller layer, in this case the default layout template (views/layouts/main.gsp) is not generated from a controller. Can the layout view (views/layouts/main.gsp) access a service class? How? Is this the correct design decision? If not, what is a better encapsulation and how do I interact with said encapsulation from the layout view (views/layouts/main.gsp)?

• animating adding/removing layers on iPhone

  On the iPhone, when you add a sub layer to a visible view's layer, using either -addSublayer: or -removeFromSuperlayer, shouldn't that sub layer appear or disappear in an animated manner (ie. fade in or fade out gradually)? My program animates using layers (not views). When I change a property of a layer like position or image content, then the change does animate (layer streaks around it's parent layer, the layer fades from the old image to the new image), so I obviously have the layers & view setup correctly. However, when I add or remove a sub layer, the change occurs instantly; there is no animation. Reading the references, it says that if the layer is visible, the sub layer should animate when adder or removed. What am I doing wrong? Has anyone had a similar problem, and was able to find a solution? Thank you, Steve Sheets

• Android -- Object Creation/Memory Allocation vs. Performance

  Hello all, This is probably an easy one. I have about 20 TextViews/ImageViews in my current project that I access like this: ((TextView)multiLayout.findViewById(R.id.GameBoard_Multi_Answer1_Text)).setText(""); //or ((ImageView)multiLayout.findViewById(R.id.GameBoard_Multi_Answer1_Right)).setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE); My question is this, am I better off, from a performance standpoint, just assigning these object variables? Further, am I losing some performance to the constant "search" process that goes on as a part of the findViewById(...) method? (i.e. Does findsViewById(...) use some sort of hashtable/hashmap for look-ups or does it implement an iterative search over the view hierarchy?) At present, my program never uses more than 2.5MB of RAM, so will assigning 20 or so more object variables drastically affect this? I don't think so, but I figured I'd ask. Thanks.
