  • Real World Examples of read-write in concurrent software

    - by Richard Fabian
I'm looking for real world examples of needing read and write access to the same value in concurrent systems. In my opinion, many semaphores or locks are present because there's no known alternative (to the implementer,) but do you know of any patterns where mutexes seem to be a requirement? In a way I'm asking for candidates for the standard set of HARD problems for concurrent software in the real world.

  • Returning an error code in Erlang

    - by Zubair
I'm writing some Erlang code and I'm very unsure whether I should let everything fail fast. One problem I find with fail fast is that for the developer/user the exception generated is pretty meaningless. Any idea what I should return which would not give esoteric and hard to read stack traces?

  • ListItemCollection is limited to 127 items?

    - by HeavyWave
I am trying to add a lot of item to ListItemCollection in the ListControl, but once the Count reaches 127 I can't add any more items. It doesn't throw any exceptions, just doesn't add the items. I have changed Capacity to 256, but it still won't add more than 127 items. Is there a hard-coded limit?

  • Hide jquery dialog on asp.net postback

    - by mellowyellow77
I feel like this is a stupid questions, but I am finding it hard to get this answered. I only want to show the jquery dialog when the page first renders. After the page renders there are multiple operations that cause the page to postback, but the user doesn't navigate away from that page. How do I disallow the jquery dialog from showing on those postback events. Thanks in advance!

  • I want to make my desktop application available online - how?

    - by Ami
I have a few years experience programming c++ and a little less then that using Qt. I built a data mining software using Qt and I want to make it available online. Unfortunately, I know close to nothing about web programming. Firstly, how easy or hard is this to do and what is the best way to go about it? Supposing I am looking to hire someone to make me a secure, long-term, extensible, website for an online software service, what skill set should I be looking for?

  • DDD and avoiding CRUD

    - by g_b
It seems that on most articles I read, CRUD is to be avoided in DDD as we are dealing with modeling business process and not data. However, I find it hard to see not to have CRUD operations on certain entities. For example, in a school grading system, before teachers can grade students, a SchoolYear has to be present or perhaps a GradingPeriod. I can't see how we can manage GradingPeriods without CRUD. Could someone enlighten me on this?

  • What's the best replacement for timeGetTime to avoid wrap-around?

    - by phjr
timeGetTime seems to be quite good to query for system time. However, its return value is 32-bit only, so it wraps around every 49 days approx. It's not too hard to detect the rollover in calling code, but it adds some complexity, and (worse) requires keeping a state. Is there some replacement for timeGetTime that would not have this wrap-around problem (probably by returning a 64-bit value), and have roughly the same precision and cost?

  • Book with C programs that have real programming examples.

    - by Siamore
This is my first question on Stack Overflow, I would like to know about any c programming books that have real programs to introduce real problems as opposed to standard books with examples aimed to teach the language it should be sort of like a challenge with solutions so that concepts like recursion can be used i know that i should find solutions to existing problems to learn the language but this is my first attempt and i find it hard to understand some simple problems so i was hoping for a book with solutions.

  • Is there a sorted_vector class, which supports insert() etc.?

    - by Frank
Often, it is more efficient to use a sorted std::vector instead of a std::set. Does anyone know a library class sorted_vector, which basically has a similar interface to std::set, but inserts elements into the sorted vector (so that there are no duplicates), uses binary search to find elements, etc.? I know it's not hard to write, but probably better not to waste time and use an existing implementation anyway.

  • Do you use Python mostly for its functional or object-oriented features?

    - by Eric
I see what seems like a majority of Python developers on StackOverflow endorsing the use of concise functional tools like lambdas, maps, filters, etc., while others say their code is clearer and more maintainable by not using them. What is your preference? Also, if you are a die-hard functional programmer or hardcore into OO, what other specific programming practices do you use that you think are best for your style? Thanks in advance for your opinions!

  • Java: Writing a DOM to an XML file (formatting issues)

    - by Vhaerun
I'm using org.w3c XML API to open an existing XML file. I'm removing some nodes , and I'm adding others instead . The problem is that the new nodes that are added are written one after another , with no newline and no indentation what so ever. While it's true that the XML file is valid , it is very hard for a human to examnine it. Is there anyway to add indentation , or at least a newline after each node ?

  • Port Android App to Desktop?

    - by CodeJustin.com
I'm just wondering if it would be possible (and legal) to port an Android app to desktop? I'm creating an android game that would work well on PC too (even with the cellphone like layout) and was thinking that maybe I could 'embed' an android emulator with an installer or would that process be a bit hard for a novice Java coder?

  • SDK 3.2 - Trigger video from UIScrollView Subview (Audio but no video)

    - by stalure
I am having a hard time getting video to play in an application that I am working on and I think the answer has to do with the views and view controllers. I have the flow depicted below. When the button is clicked, the audio from the video is playing, but nothing is displayed on screen. Anyone have any ideas? -(IBAction) playMovie { Play Movie Code } ViewController UIScrollView UIView UIButton - (playMovie)

  • How can I have a floating image (right aligned) with text that wraps around the image in Android Lay

    - by groomsy
It's kind of hard to explain, but an example of what I'm wanting to accomplish is like this: Here is some text | image | that is printed | | out in a view and --------- it is wrapped around an image that is floating and right aligned. I thought about generating the layout in html and using a web view, but I need to be able to perform an action when the user clicks on the image. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance, groomsy

  • Can this statement ever evaluate to FALSE?

    - by BojanG
I stumbled upon this while doing a review and the author is not available: int n = Convert.ToInt32(text); if (((n > 0) || (n < 0)) || (n == 0)) { return 1; } The code in general looks solid and it's hard for me to believe that the only purpose of this snippet is to confuse reviewers, but I don't see a way for this condition to fail. Am I missing something?

  • How to restrict http access to video files?

    - by Tharases
I want to only let "right" people watch those videos. In other words, only registered users that are allowed (by other users, ie, friends) should see videos. I have a hard retriction for cpu usage in my shared environment, so I can use things like php's readfile.

  • Multiple controllers with a single model

    - by Eric K
I'm setting up a directory application for which I need to have two separate interfaces for the same Users table. Basically, administrators use the Users controller and views to list, edit, and add users, while non-admins need a separate interface which lists users in a completely different manner. To do this, would I be able to just set up another controller with different views but which accesses the Users model? Sorry if this is a simple question, but I've had a hard time finding how to do this.

  • Drag and Drop and identify locations with java

    - by out_sider
I'm trying to do something quite simple, but I'm having a hard time finding good examples on the net to what I want specifically. I'd like to somehing very similer to what it's here: Dao It's a simple game called DAO and I just need to have a background image with 16 squares (4x4) and drag and drop the images (pieces) on each square to the others. I'm developing the interface using swing and I simply want to know a good place to find tutorials for such implementations or a simple suggestion on how to do it. Thanks in advance

  • Implementing a 30 day time trial

    - by svintus
Question for indie Mac developers out there: How do I implement a 30-day time trial in a non-evil fashion? Putting a counter in the prefs is not an option, since wiping prefs once a month is not a problem for an average user. Putting the counter in a hidden file somewhere sounds a bit dodgy - as a user I hate when apps sprinkle my hard drive with random files. Any ideas?
