• How to include all objects of an archive in a shared object?

  When compiling our project, we create several archives (static libraries), say liby.a and libz.a that each contains an object file defining a function y_function() and z_function(). Then, these archives are joined in a shared object, say libyz.so, that is one of our main distributable target. g++ -fPIC -c -o y.o y.cpp ar cr liby.a y.o g++ -fPIC -c -o z.o z.cpp ar cr libz.a z.o g++ -shared -L. -ly -lz -o libyz.so When using this shared object into the example program, say x.c, the link fails because of an undefined references to functions y_function() and z_function(). g++ x.o -L. -lyz -o xyz It works however when I link the final executable directly with the archives (static libraries). g++ x.o -L. -ly -lz -o xyz My guess is that the object files contained in the archives are not linked into the shared library because they are not used in it. How to force inclusion? Edit: Inclusion can be forced using --whole-archive ld option. But if results in compilation errors: g++ -shared '-Wl,--whole-archive' -L. -ly -lz -o libyz.so /usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a(elf-init.oS): In function `__libc_csu_init': (.text+0x1d): undefined reference to `__init_array_end' /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a(elf-init.oS): relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against undefined hidden symbol `__init_array_end' can not be used when making a shared object /usr/bin/ld: final link failed: Bad value Any idea where this comes from?

• Improving field get and set performance with ASM

  I would like to avoid reflection in an open source project I am developing. Here I have classes like the following. public class PurchaseOrder { @Property private Customer customer; @Property private String name; } I scan for the @Property annotation to determine what I can set and get from the PurchaseOrder reflectively. There are many such classes all using java.lang.reflect.Field.get() and java.lang.reflect.Field.set(). Ideally I would like to generate for each property an invoker like the following. public interface PropertyAccessor<S, V> { public void set(S source, V value); public V get(S source); } Now when I scan the class I can create a static inner class of PurchaseOrder like so. static class customer_Field implements PropertyAccessor<PurchaseOrder, Customer> { public void set(PurchaseOrder order, Customer customer) { order.customer = customer; } public Customer get(PurchaseOrder order) { return order.customer; } } With these I totally avoid the cost of reflection. I can now set and get from my instances with native performance. Can anyone tell me how I would do this. A code example would be great. I have searched the net for a good example but can find nothing like this. The ASM examples are pretty poor also. The key here is that I have an interface that I can pass around. So I can have various implementations, perhaps one with Java Reflection as a default, one with ASM, and maybe one with Javassist? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Returning the element number of the longest string in an array

  I'm trying to get the longestS method to take the user-inputted array of strings, then return the element number of the longest string in that array. I got it to the point where I was able to return the number of chars in the longest string, but I don't believe that will work for what I need. My problem is that I keep getting incompatible type errors when trying to figure this out. I don't understand the whole data type thing with strings yet. It's confusing me how I go about return a number of the array yet the array is of strings. When the latch is released each thread attempts to assign their confined i value to the shared, volatile, int called bar. I would expect every Thread except one to print out "Bar not equal to i", but every Thread prints "Bar equal to i". Eh, wtf does volatile actually do if not this?

• Windows Virtual PC File Copy from host very slow

  I have a Windows 7 desktop on which I've installed Windows Virtual PC and an instance Windows 7. I also have virtual XP instance on the same host. The problem I am having is that copying files from the host to the virtual machine is dog slow. I'm talking 17KB/sec. The host machine has a gigbit NIC. While using the XP virtual instance to do the same I didn't notice a huge difference but on the Window 7 virtual instance the time is really slowing me down. Is there something I need to do (settings) to fix this? I've attached an image of the Resource monitor (of the virtual Windows 7 instance) that shows my network traffic going in bursts rather than relatively steady. The files are on a "public" folder on my host machine.

• Getting my head around object oriented programing

  I am entry level .Net developer and using it to develop web sites. I started with classic asp and last year jumped on the ship with a short C# book. As I developed I learned more and started to see that coming from classic asp I always used C# like scripting language. For example in my last project I needed to encode video on the webserver and wrote a code like public class Encoder { Public static bool Encode(string videopath) { ...snip... return true; } } While searching samples related to my project I’ve seen people doing this public class Encoder { Public static Encode(string videopath) { EncodedVideo encoded = new EncodedVideo(); ...snip... encoded.EncodedVideoPath = outputFile; encoded.Success = true; ...snip... } } public class EncodedVideo { public string EncodedVideoPath { get; set; } public bool Success { get; set; } } As I understand second example is more object oriented but I don’t see the point of using EncodedVideo object. Am I doing something wrong? Does it really necessary to use this sort of code in a web app?

• Why does this extension method throw a NullReferenceException in VB.NET?

  From previous experience I had been under the impression that it's perfectly legal (though perhaps not advisable) to call extension methods on a null instance. So in C#, this code compiles and runs: // code in static class static bool IsNull(this object obj) { return obj == null; } // code elsewhere object x = null; bool exists = !x.IsNull(); However, I was just putting together a little suite of example code for the other members of my development team (we just upgraded to .NET 3.5 and I've been assigned the task of getting the team up to speed on some of the new features available to us), and I wrote what I thought was the VB.NET equivalent of the above code, only to discover that it actually throws a NullReferenceException. The code I wrote was this: ' code in module ' <Extension()> _ Function IsNull(ByVal obj As Object) As Boolean Return obj Is Nothing End Function ' code elsewhere ' Dim exampleObject As Object = Nothing Dim exists As Boolean = Not exampleObject.IsNull() The debugger stops right there, as if I'd called an instance method. Am I doing something wrong (e.g., is there some subtle difference in the way I defined the extension method between C# and VB.NET)? Is it actually not legal to call an extension method on a null instance in VB.NET, though it's legal in C#? (I would have thought this was a .NET thing as opposed to a language-specific thing, but perhaps I was wrong.) Can anybody explain this one to me?

If it is then it returns the int, if not it tells you to try again and re-runs. This is what i tried to do to change it: public static String getIns () { Scanner in = new Scanner (System.in) ; if (in.hasNextString()) { String a = in.nextString() ; return a ; } else { System.out.println ("try again:") ; return getIns () ; } } This doesn't work though. I looked through the documentation for the scanner class and i think the problem is that there is no such method as in.hasNextString or in.nextString What methods from the scanner class can i use to do what i intend these to do?

• How can I change the VisualState in a View from the ViewModel?

  I'm new to WPF and MVVM. I think this is a simple question. My ViewModel is performing an asynch call to obtain data for a DataGrid which is bound to an ObservableCollection in the ViewModel. When the data is loaded, I set the proper ViewModel property and the DataGrid displays the data with no problem. However, I want to introduce a visual cue for the user that the data is loading. • Chrome drag and drop download links

  In Chrome, I used to be able to take a link to a file and just drag to a folder on my system. Chrome would then download whatever resource was at the URL for the link and put it into the folder dropped into. This was particularly handy when using Gmail. If there was an attachment, I could just click and drag it into a folder, and Chrome would download it for me to the correct place. Now I have to hit download, and then drag from the download bar when it is finished. Has this feature been removed? Is there any way to bring it back?

• Problem with setVisible (true)

  The two examples shown below are same. Both are supposed to produce same result e.g. generate the coordinates of images displayed on JPanel. Example 1, works perfectly (print the coordinates of images), however example 2 returning 0 for the coordinate. I was wondering why because, I have put the setvisible (true) after adding the panel, in both examples.   Hi Guys I have a scenario, i need to send click events to an independent application. How can i do it using Windows Messaging or any other technique. I used [DllImport("user32.dll")] private static extern void mouse_event(UInt32 dwFlags, UInt32 dx, UInt32 dy, UInt32 dwData, IntPtr dwExtraInfo); It works well but cause the pointer to move as well. So not fit for my need. Then i use. [DllImport("user32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = false)] static extern IntPtr SendMessage(IntPtr hWnd, int Msg, int wParam, int lParam); It works well for minimize maximize, but do not work for mouse events. • How to manage sessions in NHibernate unit tests?

  I am a little unsure as to how to manage sessions within my nunit test fixtures. In the following test fixture, I am testing a repository. My repository constructor takes in an ISession (since I will be using session per request in my web application). In my test fixture setup I configure NHibernate and build the session factory. In my test setup I create a clean SQLite database for each test executed.   I'm trying to work with a non-editable JTextArea added to a JScrollPane. I want a line to be highlighted when the user clicks on that specific line. Need securely rsync internal_server_1:/some/path into internal_server_2:/another/path My idea is make ssh secure tunnel between two firewalls, e.g. from firewall_1 firewall1# ssh -N -p 22 -c 3des user2@firewall_2.example.com -L xxx/10.3.0.3/xxxx and after will run rsync from internal_server_1 somewhat like: intenal1# rsync -az /some/path [email protected]:/another/path I don't know how to make a correct ssh tunnel for rsync (what ports need tunnel) and to where i will make the rsync? (remote comp address in case of ssh tunnel) Any idea or pointer to helpfull internet resource for this case? thanx.

I'm not great at Hibernate to be honest, prefer straight SQL but I must learn, but i can't see what it is that is wrong.....? Any suggestions?

  Hi, got question regarding an extension method that I have written that looks like this: public static IEnumerable<T> FindControlsOfType<T>(this ControlCollection instance) where T : class { T control; foreach (Control ctrl in instance) { if ((control = ctrl as T) != null) { yield return control; } foreach (T child in FindControlsOfType<T>(ctrl.Controls)) { yield return child; } } } public static IEnumerable<T> FindControlsOfType<T>(this ControlCollection instance, Func<T, bool> match) where T : class { return FindControlsOfType<T>(instance).Where(match); } The idea here is to find all controls that match a specifc criteria (hence the Func<..) in the controls collection. My question is: Does the second method (that has the Func) first call the first method to find all the controls of type T and then performs the where condition or does the "runtime" optimize the call to perform the where condition on the "whole" enumeration (if you get what I mean). secondly, are there any other optimizations that I can do to the code to perform better. An example can look like this: var checkbox = this.Controls.FindControlsOfType<MyCustomCheckBox>( ctrl => ctrl.CustomProperty == "Test" ) .FirstOrDefault();

• getting number from console!

• Suggested benchmark for testing CPU footprint of antivirus software

  Our organization is currently running Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which is rumored to be a big resource hog. I know that we do have a lot of older machines that are running slow. Our PCs are all running Windows XP Pro and are used only for business applications (mostly Microsoft Office), e-mail, and web surfing. They're not used for gaming (one would hope not, anyway). I'd like to take one of the old PCs and do a speed benchmark test while it's running Symantec AV, then another test with no antivirus, and a third test with ESET NOD32. As I said, I don't care much about graphics performance. What would be an appropriate benchmarking program program to use? Freeware is best, of course. Thank you for considering my question.

• Why does my App.Config codebase not help .NET locate my assembly?

As far as I know, the runtime should parse the app.config file before looking for an assembly in the client app directory. The unhandled exception (wrapped for readability) is: Unhandled Exception: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Users\djpiter\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\70536\Chapter9\bin\Debug\AssemblyPrivate.exe' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Why it is not working? I need to use dynamic binding (not static). Kind Regards, PK

• Crash generated during destruction of hash_map

• Is it illegal to download (from torrents) software that you have already legally bought?

  With Snow Leopard now out, I decided to order myself a copy. But as I bought it online, it takes six to eight weeks three to five days for to to arrive via snail mail, but I want it now. Seeing that I have already legally bought a license for Snow Leopard, can I download a retail version of Snow Leopard from a torrent, without breaking the law? I understand that the law varies from country to country, so I acknowledge that this may be a tough question to answer sufficiently. I am in Australia, so I suppose I am mostly interested in answeres regarding Australian law, but other counties (or a general response) are also fine NOTE: SuperUser is NOT a legal resource and any advice/answers here should NOT be used as legal advice in any way.
