  • Linux networking "jail" for a single process

    - by halp
I need to tune up a networking app for network specific things like: make it use a DNS server different than the default one from /etc/resolv.conf make sure it does not try to connect to certain hosts/ports using tcp/udp connections I know I can get away with just modifying /etc/resolv.conf and writing some iptables rules, but going for a default DENY firewall policy for outgoing IP packets can trigger malfunctions in other services running on the server. I know I can set up a virtual machine with a whole OS and run my app there, but it seems a bit overkill. Is it possible to have a networking "jail" for a single app (think single Linux process) that could accept iptables-like rules for network traffic (think in terms of IP packets and above) allowed to and from this particular app? Maybe this is achievable through some dynamically loaded library that can deal with the networking layer, the same manner tsocks does, but more fine-grained?

  • Kernel compile error with iw_ndis.c

    - by James
Hi, I have a hp pavilion dm3t with intel HD graphics running ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. I'm trying to compile and install a patched kernel according to this, https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight So I downloaded the tarball from here (linked to from the page above): http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=kamal/ubuntu-maverick.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/mjg-backlight I untar'd it to a directory, entered the directory and did: make defconfig I'm not sure if that's what I should have done but it was successful, so I did: make which seemed to work fine until it gave these errors: ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1966: error: unknown field ‘num_private’ specified in initializer ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1966: warning: initialization makes pointer from integer without a cast ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1967: error: unknown field ‘num_private_args’ specified in initializer ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1967: warning: excess elements in struct initializer ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1967: warning: (near initialization for ‘ndis_handler_def’) ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1970: error: unknown field ‘private’ specified in initializer ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1970: warning: initialization makes integer from pointer without a cast ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1970: error: initializer element is not computable at load time ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1970: error: (near initialization for ‘ndis_handler_def.num_standard’) ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1971: error: unknown field ‘private_args’ specified in initializer ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.c:1971: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type make[2]: *** [ubuntu/ndiswrapper/iw_ndis.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [ubuntu/ndiswrapper] Error 2 make: *** [ubuntu] Error 2 How can I compile and install this kernel successfully? • Replacement mouse "feet"?

    - by Jeff Atwood
The plastic skid pad "feet" on the bottom of my Logitech G9 mouse (which I love!) are getting rather worn down -- to the point that the outer shell of the mouse scrapes on the mousepad a bit. I've had the mouse for about ~2 years now so it does get a lot (I mean lot of use). But, I hate to buy a new mouse when I only need replacement "feet". Where can I obtain replacement mouse feet? Is this even possible?

  • Mapping between 4+1 architectural view model & UML

    - by Sadeq Dousti
I'm a bit confused about how the 4+1 architectural view model maps to UML. Wikipedia gives the following mapping: Logical view: Class diagram, Communication diagram, Sequence diagram. Development view: Component diagram, Package diagram Process view: Activity diagram Physical view: Deployment diagram Scenarios: Use-case diagram The paper Role of UML Sequence Diagram Constructs in Object Lifecycle Concept gives the following mapping: Logical view (class diagram (CD), object diagram (OD), sequence diagram (SD), collaboration diagram (COD), state chart diagram (SCD), activity diagram (AD)) Development view (package diagram, component diagram), Process view (use case diagram, CD, OD, SD, COD, SCD, AD), Physical view (deployment diagram), and Use case view (use case diagram, OD, SD, COD, SCD, AD) which combines the four mentioned above. The web page UML 4+1 View Materials presents the following mapping: Finally, the white paper Applying 4+1 View Architecture with UML 2 gives yet another mapping: Logical view class diagrams, object diagrams, state charts, and composite structures Process view sequence diagrams, communication diagrams, activity diagrams, timing diagrams, interaction overview diagrams Development view component diagrams Physical view deployment diagram Use case view use case diagram, activity diagrams I'm sure further search will reveal other mappings as well. While various people usually have different perspectives, I don't see why this is the case here. Specially, each UML diagram describes the system from a particular aspect. So, for instance, why the "sequence diagram" is considered as describing the "logical view" of the system by one author, while another author considers it as describing the "process view"? Could you please help me clarify the confusion?

  • SQL SERVER – Copy Statistics from One Server to Another Server

    - by pinaldave
I was recently working on a performance tuning project in Dubai (yeah I was able to see the tallest tower from the window of my work place). I had a very interesting learning experience there. There was a situation where we wanted to receive the schema of original database from a certain client. However, the client was not able to provide us any data due to privacy issues. The schema was very important because without having an access to underlying data, it was a bit difficult to judge the queries etc. For example, without any primary data, all the queries are running in 0 (zero) milliseconds and all were using nested loop as there were no data to be returned. Even though we had CPU offending queries, they were not doing anything without the data in the tables. This was really a challenge as I did not have access to production server data and I could not recreate the scenarios as production without data. Well, I was confused but Ruben from Solid Quality Mentors, Spain taught me new tricks. He suggested that when table schema is generated, we can create the statistics consequently. Here is how we had done that: Once statistics is created along with the schema, without data in the table, all the queries will work as how they will work on production server. This way, without access to the data, we were able to recreate the same scenario as production server on development server. When observed at the script, you will find that the statistics were also generated along with the query. You will find statistics included in WITH STATS_STREAM clause. What a very simple and effective script. • Platform Builder: PBWorkspaces CESysgen.bat Not Used?

    - by Bruce Eitman
One of the things that I like about Windows CE is that I am always learning new things, but in this case it is a bit disturbing. We working with Multi UI (MUI) this week and discovered some problems with Windows CE 5.0 and Chinese language support. These problems don’t exist in CE 6.0. The problem was that in the batch files in Public\CEBASE\oak\misc, specifically weceshellfe.bat, some of the shell components needed are only included if certain LOCALs are selected. English is not one of them, I suppose this is because someone didn’t think that we would ever use them and English – doh. No problem, just work around this in PBWorkspaces\<workspace>\WINCE500\<BPS>\cesysgen.bat. But that didn’t work. After a lot of trial and error, what I determined is that this cesysgen.bat isn’t actually used by Platform Builder any more.  Instead, in that same folder is a <workspace>.bat file that is called by Public\CEBASE\oak\misc\cesysgen.bat. That leads to some new problems though, but solvable, in that what I really wanted to do was add a fix after the batch files in CEBASE run, but <workspace>.bat runs before the other batch files in CEBASE. So what I finally came up with was to add the fix to the PASS2 handling in <workspace>.bat. Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

  • DKIM passes everywhere apart from Yahoo!

    - by Ian
Hi, I'm using dkim-milter, Postfix on Ubuntu (I think I used these instructions for setting up). Anyway, using the reflectors such as Port25, BlackOps and Altn.com I get passes for DKIM: X-DKIM: OpenDKIM Filter v2.0.1 medusa.blackops.org o2SGTMSg005616 Authentication-Results: medusa.blackops.org; dkim=pass (1024-bit key) [email protected]; dkim-adsp=pass dkim=pass header.d=example.com (b=miSIxi7TMX; 1:0:good); Authentication-Results: verifier.port25.com header.d=example.com; dkim=pass (matches From: [email protected]); Yahoo gives this: Authentication-Results: mta1031.mail.ukl.yahoo.com from=; domainkeys=neutral (no sig); from=example.com; dkim=permerror (key failed) Where, obviously, example.com is my site address. Is anyone aware of anything different with Yahoo! that would stop these from signing? TIA

  • how to properly enable drag-and-drop in Windows 7 (with iTunes in particular)

    - by user38795
On two computers with Windows 7 at work and at home with the same version of iTunes (10.1.0.56) at work I can drag-and-drop files into iPod, and I can not at home. At home only adding them first through a dialog box to a Library and only after that drag-and-dropping into iPod (or iPad) works. Initially I thought the problem is in iTunes, but looks like it's the same version, so most likely it's the Windows 7 config parameters. It's 64-bit W7, and I have admin privileges in both cases. The only difference I could think of is it's an enterprise version at work and ultimate at home. What should I change at home to enable that drag-and-drop-ing files into the application?

  • Cronjob as root?

    - by Rob
I'm having a bit of a problem with cronjobs for backups. I've set up the following in sudo crontab -e (not under personal account): 0 1 * * * /backups/dobackup /backups/dobackup contains this: #!/bin/sh touch ITRAN tar -cvpjf /backups/$(date +%d.%m.%Y)_backup.tar.bz2 --exclude=/backups --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/sys --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/media --exclude=/dev / The backup file is created, but the file ITRAN is not. Also, the backup file is vastly smaller than expected: -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 371620259 2012-06-21 12:39 21.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1023211449 2012-06-22 18:00 22.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1512785 2012-06-23 01:00 23.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1023272455 2012-06-24 22:41 24.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1514027 2012-06-25 01:00 25.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 The backups with much larger file sizes are created by manually running sudo /backups/dobackup. It seems the cronjob is failing at some point.. but I have no idea how to debug this issue or where to start. Any ideas? Running ubuntu 10.04

  • Can Windows-Security-SPP block execution of .exe?

    - by Kirk Marple
We're seeing a strange situation, where some executables won't run from a Windows command prompt (running as admin). Just running the command (say, filename.exe) gives no response on the console. No errors, no output, nothing. If we copy over the same Windows .exe from a different folder, it "magically" starts working, and we see the default console output. (Happens both on Win7 x64, and Win2008R2 x64. Application is running as 32-bit process.) At the time when it accesses the .exe, I can see events in the application and system logs regarding Windows-Security-SPP, and it makes me believe that the .exe is being blocked from execution. Does this sound familiar?

  • Requiring SSH-key Login Via PAM From Specific IP Ranges

    - by Sean M
I need to be able to access my server (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) from remote sites, but I'd like to worry a bit less about password complexity. Thus, I'd like to require that SSH keys be used for login instead of name/password. However, I still have a lot to learn about security, and having already badly broken a test box when I was trying to set this up, I'm acutely aware of the chance of screwing myself while trying to accomplish this. So I have a second goal: I'd like to require that certain IP ranges (e.g. 10.0.0.0/8) may log in with name/password, but everyone else must use an SSH key to log in. How can I satisfy both of these goals? There already exists a very similar question here, but I can't quite figure out how to get to what I want from that information. Current tactic: reading through the PAM documentation (pam_access looks promising) and looking at /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

  • Program for drawing with pen tablet, like Salman Khan's one.

    - by Halst
Hi, I do a lot of sketching with my pen-tablet. I use MS Paint in Windows 7, and it is just perfect except for anti-aliasing. I found some videos of Salman Khan, where his sketching is really smooth and anti-aliased. Do you know what program he might use? You can see a bit of its interface here: http://www.khanacademy.org/press/chronicle.html and some more: http:/www.khanacademy.org/ http:/khanexercises.appspot.com/video?v=GW8ZPjGlk24 Else, you can recommend me something else. I hope to find something like MS Paint in Windows 7, but anti-aliased, or whatever. PS. Sorry for awkward links - newbies are allowed only 1 link per post

  • How to securely generate memorable passwords?

    - by Tim
Whenever I need new passwords I use some tools to generate those, preferable memorable passwords, but I've been wondering how secure this might actually be. Using The xkcd random number generator is probably pretty bad, cat /dev/random is probably pretty good, but generating memorable passwords seems a bit more tricky. Whenever a program generates a memorable password, it only uses a subset of the total password space available, and it is not clear to me how big this space is. Of course a long password should help in this case, but if the `memorable' part of the program is too predictable, your passwords are not very good in the end. TL;DR: how secure are memorable password generators, given the fact that `memorable' passwords are a subset of total password space? Some tools I know of: pwgen -- seems ok, but passwords are not too memorable Mac Password Assistant - generates memorable passwords but it is unclear to me how this works.

  • Impersonation on IIS 7.0 passes the machine credentials for Crystal Reports

    - by pknox
On a 32-bit Windows 2008 server running the Donor2 Application in the Classic .NET Managed Pipeline mode, configured for Windows Integrated Authentication and Impersonation, all of the .NET pages are passing the authenticated user’s credentials [DomainName\UserName]. This is the correct, expected behavior. The Crystal Reports pages, instead of passing the authenticated user’s credentials, are passing the IIS Server’s credentials [DomainName\MachineName$]. One of the very frustrating aspects of this situation is that I have another server which, as far as I can tell, is configured identically. That server, when loading Crystal Reports, is passing the authenticated user’s credentials [DomainName\UserName] as expected. I have obviously missed something, but I have no idea what it could be.

  • SQL SERVER – Installing AdventureWorks Sample Database – SQL in Sixty Seconds #010 – Video

    - by pinaldave
SQL Server has so many enhancements and features that quite often I feel like playing with various features and try out new things. I often come across situation where I want to try something new but I do not have sample data to experiment with. Also just like any sane developer I do not try any of my new experiments on production server. Additionally, when it is about new version of the SQL Server, there are cases when there is no relevant sample data even available on development server. In this kind of scenario sample database can be very much handy. Additionally, in many SQL Books and online blogs and articles there are scripts written by using AdventureWork database. The often receive request that where people can get sample database as well how to restore sample database. In this sixty seconds video we have discussed the same. You can get various resources used in this video from http://bit.ly/adw2012. • Differences between FCKeditor and CKeditor?

    - by matt74tm
Sorry, but I've not been able to locate anything (even on the official pages) informing me of the differences between the two versions. Even a query on their official forum has been unanswered for many months - http://cksource.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=17986&start=0 The license page talks a bit about the "internal" differences http://ckeditor.com/license CKEditor Commercial License - CKSource Closed Distribution License - CDL ... This license offers a very flexible way to integrate CKEditor in your commercial application. These are the main advantages it offers over an Open Source license: * Modifications and enhancements doesn't need to be released under an Open Source license; * There is no need to distribute any Open Source license terms alongside with your product and no reference to it have to be done; * No references to CKEditor have to be done in any file distributed with your product; * The source code of CKEditor doesn’t have to be distributed alongside with your product; * You can remove any file from CKEditor when integrating it with your product.

  • Filling in PDF Forms with ASP.NET and iTextSharp

The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular file format for documents. PDF files are a popular document format for two primary reasons: first, because the PDF standard is an open standard, there are many vendors that provide PDF readers across virtually all operating systems, and many proprietary programs, such as Microsoft Word, include a "Save as PDF" option. Consequently, PDFs server as a sort of common currency of exchange. A person writing a document using Microsoft Word for Windows can save the document as a PDF, which can then be read by others whether or not they are using Windows and whether or not they have Microsoft Word installed. Second, PDF files are self-contained. Each PDF file includes its complete text, fonts, images, input fields, and other content. This means that even complicated documents with many images, an intricate layout, and with user interface elements like textboxes and checkboxes can be encapsulated in a single PDF file. Due to their ubiquity and layout capabilities, it's not uncommon for a websites to use PDF technology. For example, when purchasing goods at an online store you may be offered the ability to download an invoice as a PDF file. PDFs also support form fields, which are user interface elements like textboxes, checkboxes, comboboxes, and the like. These form fields can be entered by a user viewing the PDF or, with a bit of code, they can be entered programmatically. This article is the first in a multi-part series that examines how to programmatically work with PDF files from an ASP.NET application using iTextSharp, a .NET open source library for PDF generation. This installment shows how to use iTextSharp to open an existing PDF document with form fields, fill those form fields with user-supplied values, and then save the combined output to a new PDF file.
