    Suppose that I have a database query which looks like below - select name, gender, birthday from person where person_id = 1; When this query is executed, some records from the database are returned. I want to make a custom object which will contain the exact attributes as the column names, with the corresponding values. As an example, suppose that the object is X. So it will have three attributes which are X.name, X.gender and X.birthday, with the corresponding values from the records. Is it doable in PHP? If so, then how?

  • Direct access to website's database with single click?

    I have noticed that when selecting options (drop down menus, radio buttons etc) on some websites you see an ever more complex URL being created and then you can use that URL to access that website at a later date and go straight to the page with your desired options. Unfortunately on other websites the URL remains fixed and you appear to have no choice but to select the options all over again. I was wondering if there was some utility that would help automate this process.

  • Web Applications Development: Security practices for Application design

    Hi, As I am creating more web applications that are targeted for multiple users, I figured out that I have to start thinking about user management and security. At a glance and in my ideal world, all users belong to a group. Permissions and access is thus defined per group (and inherited by the users of that group). Logically, I have my group of administrators, which are identified with a level "7" (integer) clearance. A group of webusers have for example level "1". This in generally all works great for me, but I need some kind of list that I have to keep in mind how I secure my system, and some general practices. I am not looking for a specific environment; I want to learn the why's and how's. An example is privilege escalation. If someone would be able to "push" themselves inside a group with higher privileges, for example the Administration, how can I prevent this, or what measures should I take to have some sort of precaution? I don't like in that case to walk into a caveat. My question is basically: where can I find a good resource, list, policy, book that explains the security of web applications, the why's, the how's and readable if you don't have any experience in the realm of advanced security? I prefer a free resource, as I believe I couldn't be the first one who thought about this. Thank you for your answers, comments and feedback.

  • As a team should we develop locally and merge into the dev server, or develop on the dev server?

    Hey, Recently I was tasked with writing up formal procedures for a team based development enviroment. We have several projects with multiple modules each. Right now there are only two programmers, however there are plans to expand to 4-6 programmers. Each programmer will be working on the same project and possibly pages which may cause over writing or error issues. So far the ideal solution I have thought up is: Local development (WAMP/VM or some virtual server instance on their own machine). Once a developer has finished their developments, they check it into the CVS Repository and merge it wih other fixes etc. The CVS version is then deployed to the primary dev server for testing by the devs. The MySQL DAtabases are kept on the primary dev server and users may remotely connect to it. Any Schema / Data alterations are run through a DB Admin who will notify all devs of any DB Changes (Which should be rare). Does anyone see an issue with this or have a better solution?

    Dear programmers of StackOverflow, recently me and two of my friends from college started a software company. We are developing web-applications using GWT-Spring-Hibernate and other helper frameworks. In a couple of months, we managed to set up a stable back-end and produced some demo programs for CRM solutions. Our area of interest is CRM where we can combine the flexibility of our back-end with the slick looking GWT based GUIs. Unfortunately we live in a third world country (well, kind of two and a half :) and no one here gives our work enough credit, or really cares about the advantages of web-apps. We are stuck at the moment because our current clients do not want to pay that much money for just "putting their local app on the web". Since we can not find satisfying work here, we have decided to work online/international. I was wondering if you guys know a good freelance kind of sites where we can throw ourselves into the market.. Also a question from frustration, to those who are in the field or knowledgeable/interested about web based CRM, how much would you ask/pay for lets say a web app which will keep track of all the patients of a multi-branch clinic also allowing the patients to access to view their own records?   • When to use @Singleton in a Jersey resource

    I have a Jersey resource that access the database. Basically it opens a database connection in the initialization of the resource. Performs queries on the resource's methods. I have observed that when I do not use @Singleton, the database is being open at each request. And we know opening a connection is really expensive right? So my question is, should I specify that the resource be singleton or is it really better to keep it at per request especially when the resource is connecting to the database?     I'm currently using jquery's ajax feature or whatever they call it. To load data from mysql database. Its working fine, but one of the built in features of this one is to load all the data which is on the database when you press on backspace and there's no character left on the text box. Here's my query: SELECT * FROM prod_table WHERE QTYHAND>0 AND PRODUCT LIKE '$prod%' OR P_DESC LIKE '$desc%' OR CATEGORY LIKE '$cat%' As you can see I only want to load the products which has greater than 0 quantity on hand. I'm using this code to communicate to the php file which has the query on it: $('#inp').keyup(function(){ var inpval=$('#inp').val(); $.ajax({ type: 'POST', data: ({p : inpval}), url: 'querys.php', success: function(data) { $('.result').html(data); } }); }); Is it possible to also filter the data that it outputs so that when I press on backspace and there's no character left. The only products that's going to display are those with greater than 0 quantity?

  • OpenGL ES and real world development

    Hi Guys, I'm trying to learn OpenGL ES quickly (I know, I know, but these are the pressures that have been thrusted upon me) and I have been read around a fair bit, which lots of success at rendering basic models, some basic lighting and 'some' texturing success too. But this is CONSTANTLY the point at which all OpenGL ES tutorials end, they never say more of what a real life app may need. So I have a few questions that Im hoping arent too difficult. How do people get 3d models from their favorite 3d modeling tool into the iPhone/iPad application? I have seen a couple of blog posts where people have written some python scripts for tools like Blender which create .h files that you can use, is this what people seem to do everytime? Or do the "big" tooling suites (3DS, Maya, etc...) have exporting features? Say I have my model in a nice .h file, all the vertexes, texture points, etc.. are lined up, how to I make my model (say of a basic person) walk? Or to be more general, how do you animate "part" of a model (legs only, turn head, etc...)? Do they need to be a massive mash-up of many different tiny models, or can you pre-bake animations these days "into" models (somehow) Truely great 3D games for the iPhone are (im sure) unbelievably complex, but how do people (game dev firms) seem to manage that designer/developer workflow? Surely not all the animations, textures, etc... are done programatically. I hope these are not stupid questions, and in actual fact, my app that Im trying to investigate how to make is really quite simple, just a basic 3D model that I want to be able to pan/tilt around using touch. Has anyone ever done/seen anything like this that I might be able to read up on? Thanks for any help you can give, I appreciate all types of response big or small :) Cheers, Mark

  • Why do most Database developers hate Agile

    To me "Agile" methodology is a common-sense oriented approach and one that should likely be adopted for most software projects. I find that while a lot of Middle Tier Developers and Front End developers find it a very sensible project delivery model, plenty of Database developers (and good ones) seem to be totally against it. They are very keen on knowing the biggest picture and designing a database solution that will cater to that. They do not seem to like "Vertical striping" of a functionality. They would rather see the complete design document/feature document instead of concentrating on small user stories. Sarcasm aside, can someone realistically provide some insight as to why this mentality is prevalent? Especially DB devs? What would be a convincing argument against that?

  • sqlite3.OperationalError: database is locked - non-threaded application

    Hi, I have a Python application which throws the standard sqlite3.OperationalError: database is locked error. I have looked around the internet and could not find any solution which worked (please note that there is no multiprocesses/threading going on, and as you can see I have tried raising the timeout parameter). The sqlite file is stored on the local hard drive. The following function is one of many which accesses the sqlite database, and runs fine the first time it is called, but throws the above error the second time it is called (it is called as part of a for loop in another function): def update_index(filepath): path = get_setting('Local', 'web') stat = os.stat(filepath) modified = stat.st_mtime index_file = get_setting('Local', 'index') connection = sqlite3.connect(index_file, 30) cursor = connection.cursor() head, tail = os.path.split(filepath) cursor.execute('UPDATE hwlive SET date=?   • what are the limitations of mobile phones and web development

    simple really.. I am have been asked to do a mobile site (straight html + css (+ maybe jquery mobile later on)). The site will need to support the new type smart phone and the old type Nokia/(Symbian OS) with the web browser. Doubts and reservations aside as to anyone without a smart phone would bother visiting this site it still needs to support it. My first question is do older phones support PNG images and transparancey... But this has led me to a much broader question of what are some of the limitations of developing for older phone platforms is there anything that has caught mobile web devs out and had them scratching their head for an afternoon.. what are the limitations of mobile phones?

  • Planning a skillset for a fallback career [closed]

    I'm not too certain this is a SO question, but I didn't think it belonged in meta either. Long story short, I am bioinformatics researcher. I like to code, it's my favourite part of the job. I have been thinking for a while that if academia is not kind to me, I might seek a career in software development. My current contract is for three years and I would like to spend some time over the next 3 three years learning and practicing software development as possible. Python seems like a popular language and it what I mostly use to do things for me, but I am also in heavy use of R. So my main question is: Are python and R good things to be learning with a sotfware dev goal in mind, and if so, is there any particular type of programming or software that might be useful to have experience with.   • Has jQuery core development been slowing down?

    So, I regularly head over to jQuery's Commit History on GitHub just to read through the new code committed to jQuery core. But there hasn't been anything new committed since April 24th. I've already read through jQuery core a few times and I'm pretty familiar with it which is why I like reading the commits. I just like to see what changed, why it was changed, etc. Why has there been a slow down in jQuery commits on GitHub? Anyone else have some recommendations for where I can go to view good javascript code being developed? My motive for reading jQuery's commit history is similar to the reasons I browse through accepted answers here on stackoverflow - to learn from people smarter than me. With that said, I am interested in the answer to this questions title, but I am more interested in finding a substitute to reading the jQuery commits.

    Hi, i was just asked today, but i couldn't answer precisely so that's why i'm asking here :-) There is any book about Firewall design and implementations (Unix environment and C)? For sure, i could recommend TCP/IP books, and what i did, but there is some design decisions, that are not related with TCP/IP. For sure, i said about the netfilter/iptables (RTFSC) but as well we cannot assume that the netfilter/iptables is the best approach since we don't have too many baselines (ok, we could compare it with PF, but again, read source code to understand design decisions is not always the best way). So if anybody knows a book about this theme, please shoot it!
