• Java Time Zone When Parsing DateFormat

  I had code that parses date as follows: String ALT_DATE_TIME_FORMAT = "yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSSZ"; SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat( ALT_DATE_TIME_FORMAT); Date date = sdf.parse(requiredTimeStamp); And it was working fine, suddenly, this stopped working. It turns out an admin made some config changes on the server and the date is currently being returned as "2010-12-27T10:50:44.000-08:00" which is not parse-able by the above pattern. I have two questions: The first would be what pattern would parse the date being returned by the JVM in the format above (specifically, just '-08:00' as the time zone)? And second, where exactly would one change such settings on a linux RHEL 5 server so that we are aware of such changes in the future?

  I need to download a pdf file from a webserver to my pc and save it locally. I used Httpclient to connect to webserver and get the content body: HttpEntity entity=response.getEntity(); InputStream in=entity.getContent(); String stream = CharStreams.toString(new InputStreamReader(in)); int size=stream.length(); System.out.println("stringa html page LENGTH:"+stream.length()); System.out.println(stream); SaveToFile(stream); Then i save content in a file: //check CRLF (i don't know if i need to to this) String[] fix=stream.split("\r\n"); File file=new File("C:\\Users\\augusto\\Desktop\\progetti web\\test\\test2.pdf"); PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter(file)); for (int i = 0; i < fix.length; i++) { out.print(fix[i]); out.print("\n"); } out.close(); I also tried to save a String content to file directly: OutputStream out=new FileOutputStream("pathPdfFile"); out.write(stream.getBytes()); out.close(); But the result is always the same: I can open pdf file but i can see white pages only. Does the mistake is around pdf stream and endstream charset encoding? Does pdf content between stream and endStream need to be manipulate in some others way?

• Mix of Arabic and English causes problems in JTextArea (Java)

  I have a JTextArea which displays HTML of an Arabic web page. So it's essentially a mix of English and Arabic. In the JTextArea, with columns set to 30, certain text just disappears instead of wrapping properly. The weird thing is that if I copy the invisible text and paste it into Notepad, then I can see it in Notepad. If I change the number of columns to 40, everything displays fine. Any ideas?

• Import text file crunching library for Java/Groovy ?

  In a lot of real life implementations of applications we face the requirement to import some kind of (text) files. Usually we would implement some (hardcoded?) logic to validate the file (eg. proper header, proper number of delimiters, proper date/time value,etc.). Eventually also need to check for the existence of related data in a table (eg. value of field 1 in text file must have an entry in some basic data table). While XML solves this (to some extend) with XSD and DTD, we end up hacking this again and again for proprietary text file formats. Is there any library or framework that allows the creation of templates similar to the xsd approach ? This would make it way more flexible to react on file format changes or implement new formats. • What Java portal server do you use?

  I've been tasked with learning Vignette and setting it up is a nightmare. There are many different components in the wizard. If something fails, you get a cryptic error message and then have to start again. This is the worst "Wizard" since Kwame Brown. Are there other Portal servers out there that are easy to configure, or at least seem to have kept a developer's sanity in mind during configuration? To those that have used several different portal servers, which is your favorite?

  I just had a little surprise in a Webapp, where I'm using EL in .jsp pages. I added a boolean property and scratched my head because I had named a boolean "isDynamic", so I could write this: <c:if test="${page.isDynamic}"> ... </c:if> Which I find easier to read than: <c:if test="${page.dynamic}"> ... </c:if> However the .jsp failed to compile, with the error: javax.el.PropertyNotFoundException: Property 'isDynamic' not found on type com... I turns out my IDE (and it took me some time to notice it), when generating the getter, had generated a method called: isDynamic() instead of: getIsDynamic() Once I manually replaced isDynamic() by getIsDynamic() everything was working fine. So I've got really two questions here: is it bad to start a boolean property's name with "is"? wether it is bad or not, didn't IntelliJ made a mistake here by auto-generating a method named isDynamic instead of getIsDynamic?

• Java: Set<E> collection, where items are identified by its class

  I need Set collection, where its items will be identified by items class. Something like ReferenceIdentityMap from Appache Collections, but on class scope i.e. two different instances of same class must be identified as same in this collection. You know, it is a violation of equals()/hashCode() identity principle but in occasional use it makes sense. I have done this in simple class backing with Map<Class<? extends E>, E>, but due to simplicity it doesn't implement Set<E>. There may be a more elegant solution, decorator of any Set<E> would be great. Is there any implementation of such collection there (Apache/Google/something/... Collections)?

  Hi, assume that I have the following code fragment operation1(); bw.close(); operation2(); When I call BufferedReader.close() from my code, I am assuming my JVM makes a system call that ensures that the buffer has been flushed and written to disk. I want to know if close() waits for the system call to complete its operation or does it proceed to operation2() without waiting for close() to finish. To rephrase my question, when I do operation2(), can I assume that bw.close() has completed successfully?

  hey everybody, I have a jsp page which contains the code which prints all files in a given directory and their file paths. The code is if (dir.isDirectory()) { File[] dirs = dir.listFiles(); for (File f : dirs) { if (f.isDirectory() && !f.isHidden()) { File files[] = f.listFiles(); for (File d : files) { if (d.isFile() && !d.isHidden()) { System.out.println(d.getName()+ d.getParent() + (d.length()/1024)); } } } if (f.isFile() && !f.isHidden()) { System.out.println(f.getName()+ f.getParent() + (f.length()/1024)); } } } The problem is that it prints the complete file path, which when accessed from tomcat is invalid. For example, the code spits out the following path: /usr/local/tomcat/sites/web_tech/images/scores/blah.jpg and I want it to only print the path up to /images ie /images/scores/blah.jpg I know I could just mess around with an actual string, ie splitting it or string matching, but is there an easier way to do it? What are alternatives, pros and cons of different approaches? Is memcached painpul for sysadmins to install? Is it difficult to embed it to the existing infrastructure from the perspective of a sysadmin? What about using a database to hold temporary data between web app transitions?   I am trying to load properties from a file (test.properties) The code I use is as follows: URL url = getClass().getResource("../resources/test.properties"); properties.load(url.openStream()); But when executing the second line I get a NPE. (null pointer exception) I'm not sure what's wrong here... I have checked that the file exists at the location where URL points to... Any help is appreciated....

• Java Conversion of byte[] into a srting and then back to a byte[]

  I am working on a proxy server. I am getting data in byte[] which i convert into a string to perform certain operations. Now when i convert this new string back into a byte [] it causes unkonw problems. So mainly its like i need to know how to correctly convert a byte[] into a string and then back into a byte[] again. I tried to just convert the byte[] to string and then back to byte[] again (to make sure thats its not my operations that are causing problems). So its like: // where reply is a byte[] String str= new String(reply,0, bytesRead); streamToClient.write(str.getBytes(), 0, bytesRead); is not equivalent to streamToClient.write(reply, 0, bytesRead); my proxy works fine when i just send the byte[] without any conversion but when i convert it from byte[] to a string and then back to a byte[] its causes problems. can some one please help? =]

  Let's say I needed to make a series of String[] objects. I know that if i wanted to make a string array called "test" to hold 3 Strings I could do String[] test = new String[3]; But let's say I needed to make a series of these arrays and I wanted them to be named, 1,2, 3, 4, 5... etc. For however many I needed and I didn't know how many I'd need. How do I achieve a similar effect to this: for (int k=0; k=5; k++){ String[] k = new String[3]; } Which would created 5 string arrays named 1 through 5. Basically I want to be able to create array objects with a name detemined by some other function. Why can't I seem to do this? Am I just being stupid?
