  • Setting up web page width

    - by RPK
I am new to web-design. I want to set the page-width so that it appears well in a 800x600 resolution screen. I normally use Tables but I read somewhere that excessive use of Tables slows the performance of the website. What other thing I can use and how to set the width?

  • continuous music on website

    - by Patrick
Hi all, I'm against it as I'm sure ALL of you are, but my client wants background music on their website. I'm very new to this, so was wondering how should I do that? I know I should use iframes, but what's the actual way of using them? eg: do I just create the home page with 2 frames (one for the music, one for the rest of the website), and then every time the user clicks on a link I can load the usual destination page - or should I update all pages in some way to make sure they are 'frames enabled'? Also, I do I style the frame to make sure it's hidden? thanks, Patrick ps please don't reopen the discussion about why background music is not good - I do know that and personally hate it. But the client is adamant and paying for it so... ;)

  • Inscribe and center an image within a frame

    - by Brennan Roberts
    Given a div of arbitrary aspect ratio, what's the best way to place and style an image (also with an arbitrary aspect ratio) inside such that: It is both inscribed and centered Its dimensions and position are set using relative values so that the image will remain inscribed and centered automatically when the frame is uniformly scaled (javascript should only be required when the image is initially inserted, or if the frame's aspect ratio changes) Extra markup is minimized Here's the result we want: Here's a fiddle template, which is just: Markup Should pillarbox <div class="frame"> <img src="http://www.placekitten.com/200/300" /> </div> Should letterbox <div class="frame"> <img src="http://www.placekitten.com/300/200" /> </div> CSS .frame { width: 200px; height: 200px; border: 2px solid black; margin: 10px 0px 100px 0; }

  • Centre content vertically in a <div>

    - by Ben
Hi, this is probably very simple to do, but I can't quite get it right. I have a <div> which contains two <a> tags. I would like the <a> tags to be both centred vertically and horizontally. I have set them to centre horizontally by setting the text-align:center; on the div, but can't figure out how to vertically centre them. How would I go about doing this? Thanks.

  • quicktime movie layering issues

    - by DanC
I have a site (link below) where the clients work displays on a long horizontal page. The menu is fixed on the left hand side and the images disappear under the menu when scrolling across. The client has now uploaded quicktime movies which do not go under the menu like the images but scroll over the menu. http://www.calebchurchill.com/projects/horny_dog/ I have tried to sort this using z-index but am so far been unsuccessful. Any ideas?

  • Using Android AsyncTask to download html file

    - by Lukas Tomsu
    i just started with android and i'm working on a simple app that should download contents of a html file. I'm using AsyncTask as suggested, but i'm encountering one problem. In the following code (i followed a tutorial code), i get tv cannot be resolved for the onPostExecute method. How to access the downloaded file? Thank You: public class FlashResults extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); TextView tv = new TextView(this); setContentView(tv); readWebpage(tv); } protected class DownloadPage extends AsyncTask<String, Void, String> { protected String doInBackground(String... urls) { String responseStr = null; try { for (String url : urls) { DefaultHttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient(); HttpGet get = new HttpGet(url); HttpResponse httpResponse = httpClient.execute(get); HttpEntity httpEntity = httpResponse.getEntity(); responseStr = EntityUtils.toString(httpEntity); } } catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) { } catch (ClientProtocolException e) { } catch (IOException e) { } return responseStr; } protected void onPostExecute(String result) { tv.setText(result); } } public void readWebpage(View v) { DownloadPage task = new DownloadPage(); task.execute(new String[] { "http://seznam.cz" }); } }

  • CSS files that don't end with .css

    - by Yongho
Is there a disadvantage to using a dynamic Python file to generate the CSS for a webpage? I'd like computers with an administrator cookie to show special admin panel CSS, and show regular CSS for all other users. I'm planning to use: <link rel="stylesheet" href="/css.py" type="text/css" />

  • What does the question mark at then end of a css file mean/do?

    - by Bob Dylan
I've noticed that on some websites (including SO) the link to the CSS will look like: <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://sstatic.net/so/all.css?v=6638"> I would say its safe to assume that ?v=6638 tells the browser to load version 6638 of the css file. But can I do this on my websites and can I include different versions of my CSS file just by changing the numbers?

  • CSS repeat pattern with linear gradient

    - by luca
I'm on my first approach with photoshop patterns.I'm buildin a webpage where I want to use my pattern to give a nice effect to my webpage background. The pattern I found is 120x120 px If I was done here I should use this css: background-imag:url(mypattern.jpg); background-repeat:repeat; But Im not done.Id like to *add to my page's background a linear gradient(dir=top/down col=light-blue/green) with the pattern fill layer on top of it, with blending mode=darken *. This is the final effect: I come to the point. QUESTION: Combining linear vertical-gradient effect and my 120x120 pattern is it possible to find a pattern that I could use to repeat itself endlessly both vertical and horizontal??which is a common solution in this case? Hope It's clear thanks Luca

  • Android broswer crushes on Ajax calls, when viewport meta tag is defined

    - by Eran
I am building a web app, which is intended to run on the Android browser. When I have a webpage that contains any kind of viewport meta tag, like this: <meta name="viewport" content="width=400"/> My webpage crushes on ajax calls. It happens when using the emulator, the actual browser on my nexus one, and on a droid (all running Android 2.1). Without the meta tag, the ajax calls run as they should. Any ideas?

  • Assigning specific menu administration rights for roles in drupal

    - by Martin Andersson
Hello folks. I'm trying to give one of my roles the administrative rights to add/remove content in a specific menu (but not all menus). I think I found a module that should enable something like this, http://drupalmodules.com/module/delegate-menu-administration I've followed the instructions, added the role to my user, checked the "administer some menus" value for that role and checked the "Make admin" field for that role and specific menu in Menus. I also gave the role permissions to change page and story content. However, it still wont let the user add any new content it creates in any menu, and I get an error message saying "warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/martin/www/drupal/modules/delegate_menu_admin/delegate_menu_admin.module on line 346." Line 346 looks like this: foreach ($form['menu']['parent']['#options'] as $key => $value) { I did a print_r($form); in the file just before it and there's no such array that I can see: [menu] => Array ( [#access] => 1 [delete] => Array ( [#access] => ) ) When I gave the role "administer menu" permissions, nothing extra was printed at all, leading me to the assumption that the delegate_menu_admin.module file is not used at all while both the "administer menu" and the "administer some menus" (from the delegate-menu-administration module) permissions are set! Is this some incompatibility between the module because of some drupal update? Or am I just too tired and too stupid? :)

  • Upload large files via a webpage

    - by Hultner
What way is the best way to let users upload large files from there webbrowser to a server. I'm talking 200MB+ possible up to a few gigatyes. I have been thinking of a few possible solutions to the problem (not tried them yet) and this is basically the things I came up with. Server download speed will not be a problem but the users connection possibly could. Having some sort of applet on the client side written in Java or Flash which sends the file in parts (is this possible with an applet) to a php/other script on the server and a checksum+ some other info about the file. On the server scripts all the parts and the info file is saved in a temporary directory wich has a unique name based on the checksum of the file and the ip of the user. When the last chunk is sent the applet sends a signal to the server saying it's finished and the server put the file together in the right location. If a chunk doesn't match the checksum for that part the server will send a response to the applet telling it to reupload that chunk. I don't know how important the checksum checking is since it's all tcpackages, someone with more insigth migth be able to answer on that. This is probably the worst way, changing the settings on your server to allow huge fileuploads via an inputfiel. Do it like a normal transfer. User an uploadmanager which does pretty much the same thing as applet i mentioned above. Pros of the first is probably that it would most likely be rather secure, you could show progress as well and possibly resume an upload if ip hasn't changed and do a threaded upload of the chunks. Cons of the first is that the user will need flash/java for it to work. Pros of the 2nd is that it will pretty much work for everyone but cons are big, first there's no way resuming an intruppted download and if something is wrong the whole file would have to be reuploaded is a few of cons. For the third one the pros is pretty muc the same as for the first but the cons is that the user would have to download an application to their computer and run and the application will have to be have to be compatible with their computer and OS. Another way may be a combination of two. Lets say an applet for bigger or more files and a simple input which is rather restricted to maybe max 10-20MB for smaller files and comability. There are probably other much smarter ways to tackle this and that's why I'm asking for advice here on SO.

  • How to maintain an ordered table with Core Data (or SQL) with insertions/deletions?

    - by Jean-Denis Muys
This question is in the context of Core Data, but if I am not mistaken, it applies equally well to a more general SQL case. I want to maintain an ordered table using Core Data, with the possibility for the user to: reorder rows insert new lines anywhere delete any existing line What's the best data model to do that? I can see two ways: 1) Model it as an array: I add an int position property to my entity 2) Model it as a linked list: I add two one-to-one relations, next and previous from my entity to itself 1) makes it easy to sort, but painful to insert or delete as you then have to update the position of all objects that come after 2) makes it easy to insert or delete, but very difficult to sort. In fact, I don't think I know how to express a Sort Descriptor (SQL ORDER BY clause) for that case. Now I can imagine a variation on 1): 3) add an int ordering property to the entity, but instead of having it count one-by-one, have it count 100 by 100 (for example). Then inserting is as simple as finding any number between the ordering of the previous and next existing objects. The expensive renumbering only has to occur when the 100 holes have been filled. Making that property a float rather than an int makes it even better: it's almost always possible to find a new float midway between two floats. Am I on the right track with solution 3), or is there something smarter?

Hi, I'm using CurvyCorners to make my corners curvy in IE, only thing is that when it reads the CSS it takes all the webkit properties and shows me an alert curvyCorners.alert("No object with ID " + arg + " exists yet.\nCall curvyCorners(settings, obj) when it is created.");. • Single Page Navigation w/ Javascript and Back Button

    - by Khan
Ok, so I have a "navigation" div and "content" div. When something on the navigation is clicked, I fade in the content div with the new data. Now, I would like to have the old data returned when the user hits the "back" button on his/her browser, but I'm having a hard time doing this. I know I can set the content to be a named anchor, so they stay on the same page with a breadcrumb trail. However, that's as far as I get. Can I listen for a back button click? Can I set content to display when a certain anchor name is reached? Thanks in advance for your help, SO.

  • Website column width

    - by keks
Hi, I am interested what column widths you would suggest for two-column and three-column websites. For example if we consider two-column layout (total width 1000px), some possible widths would be: 900-100, 800-200, 750-250, 700-300, 600-400. Which layout is best for usability, possible ad placements, widget integration?

  • CSS Vertical Spacing Issue (Margin?) - Vertical Space Between Two Divs

    - by Sootah
I've got the layout of my site mostly done. On the domain I'm testing this layout on - http://networkgenius.org/ - there is a vertical space separating the content-wrapper div and the menu div. I have the margins set to 0px for the vertical spacing, and this is the only area that is separated like it is. I'd like the white content area to be pressed up right against the bottom of the menu, so that none of the body's background shows between them. What am I doing wrong?
