  • What is the process of planning software called? Or what is the job title of someone who does software planning?

    - by Ryan
For example, let's say a non-technical person comes to me with their rough initial specification. And I sit down with them over a couple weeks and help them hone, formalize and better plan the application that they want built. What is this called? Information architecture, software architecture, specification writing, software planning, requirements analysis? What is the best, most recognizable term for this?

  • Software RS vs. FS

    - by SixSickSix
We always make 2 documents the SRS (Software Requirement Specification) and the FS (Functional Specifications) documents for the coders aka programmers. As I have examined the SRS is more like containing both functional and non-functional requirements as compared to the FS that deals only with the functional requirements. To cut it short will the SRS be sufficient enough for the programmers to do their work? and not make any FS anymore?

  • JEE project(s) to show prospective employers

    - by My code has no bugs
I'm studying JEE and want to get employed doing JEE work in the near future. From reading this website and various others, I now know that many employers value a github profile with code samples, projects and the like. Since I want to get hired doing JEE stuff, what kind of projects can I work on to eventually place on github showing prospective employers? Is there any (non-nonsense) project(s) which uses the JEE stack I can work on ?

  • Outsource SEO - A Strong Business Case

Outsourcing became quite popular in the 1990's as companies raced to reduce costs by moving non-essential functions out of the corporate cost structure. One of the main methods for doing this was to outsource. The basic business case to move any function to a subcontract was quite simple. Subcontractors that focus only on one thing have probably developed a deeper technical understanding of the process and are more effective. Economies of scale allow the outsourcer to provide the same (or higher quality) service at a lower price.

  • Video playback in games - formats & decoding

    - by snake5
What free / non-restrictive open-source solutions (not GPL) are available for decoding game videos? The requirements are simple: a relatively easy to use C API encoded files must be quite small there must be an application that converts videos from any format (whatever codec is installed on Windows or equivalent amount of internally decoded formats) decoding has to happen fairly quickly bonus points go to file formats that are popular / actively supported and developed

  • Space Invaders-type game: Keeping the enemies aligned with each other as they turn around?

    - by CorundumGames
OK, so here's the lowdown of the problem I'm trying to solve. I'm developing a game in PyGame that's a cross between Space Invaders and Columns. I'm trying to make the motion of the enemies similar to that of the aliens in Space Invaders; that is, they're all clustered in a grid, and if even one hits the side of the screen, the entire formation moves down and turns around. However, the motion of these aliens is continuous (as continuous as a monitor can be, anyway), not on a discrete grid like in the original. The enemies are instances of an Enemy class, and in turn they're held by a 2D array in a enemysquadron module (which, if you don't use Python, is in this case essentially a singleton due to the way Python modules work). Inside the Enemy class I have a class-scope velocity vector that is reversed every time an Enemy object touches the edge of the screen. This won't do, though, because as time goes on the enemies just become disorganized and jumbled (i.e. not in a grid as planned). I haven't implemented the Enemies going downward yet, so let's not worry about that right now. Any tips?

  • Is the W3 standard a major factor when google decides SERP position?

    - by Anonymous12345
I have a dynamic php website which index only has around 800 errors according to the w3 validator online. I have tried checking major websites like ebay, stackoverflow and others also, all with around 400 errors. So my first thought is, what good is that validator when it always displays errors? Secondly, will the errors affect my SERP ranking? ie, will me fixing these errors as good as I can increase my Google search position? Thanks

  • Trainee programs for foreigner in EU [closed]

    - by user63970
Maybe this is the wrong site for asking that, but I didn't find better. I heard a lot about programs for young IT specialists in EU from other countries, my residence is Ukraine. We have several organizations that provide info about them, but you must pay quite a lot for them to only show you the list of vacancies. Maybe someone knows about companies in EU that are willing to take young programmers for trainee or junior vacancies from non-EU countries? I am interested in C++ development.

  • System requirement specification vs functional one - separate docs?

    - by user970696
A lot of sources (e.g. Wikipedia) mentiones System requirement specification and Functional specification as two separate entities. However, Wiegers in his book writes: The software requirements specification is sometimes called a functional specification, a product specification... This is very confusing for me as I thought FS describes just functions while SRS whole system. From this point of view, FS would contain both non functional and functional requirements and everything else.

  • Website that allows twitter like message accessed via tinyurl

    - by blunders
Looking for a website that allows me to post twitter like messages that are accessed via tinyurls and that I'm able to create an account to get reports on the access of each of these messages. Basically, unlikely twitter each message would require the tinyurl to access the message, but the would be no central author index of messages, but the author would not only be able to login and see a centralized listing of all the messages, but also reports on if the messages had been accessed.

  • Is multiple domain names and links from same IP causing poor search engine rankings?

    - by John
I have an ecommerce website which is not doing so well in Google. I am trying to improve this of course, and am looking at some possibilities for why it isn't doing well. The website has four domain names, all of which have been indexed by Google. A few months ago I applied 301 redirects to any requests for two of the domain names so now it is down to two domain names (one is a .net, the other is a .com.au, the others were .net.au and .com). I prefer to use my main domain name (the .com.au), but one of the names has been around for a long time and has more inbound links. According to a PageRank tool, both are PR2. It is a Classic ASP site and up until recently had a lot of querystring parameters. In the last week or so I added URL rewriting so there is now no parameters for most pages. I don't do 301 redirects from the old URLs but instead I add the META canonical tag indicating the preferred new URL. At the same time I redesigned the site and improved title tags, META descriptions, and H tags but it hasn't been long enough yet for Google to index many of these yet. I also looked at what pages Google has indexed and strangely it has some strange pages in the index, there are a lot of pages which are actual keyword searches (more a bunch of random letters than an actual word). What I mean is that it is as if they had typed in something to search for in my search box - there are no links to pages like this and the only way of getting this is to type something in to the search box). So I added a META robots tag with noindex, nofollow anytime that I render pages like this. Years ago I set up a fake price comparison site which lists all my products and links back to my site. It has a different keyword rich domain name but is on the same server and same IP address. It's a completely different layout but does have the same product categories and product descriptions (although I have stripped formatting out of them so they are not identical except in text). I also have a few blog sites which again are on the same server/IP and all have advertising for the website. My questions are: What should I do with the multiple domains, just use one, or continue with two or more? Should I add 301 redirects, not just the META canonical tag? Any idea about Google indexing my search results page, and did I do the right thing with the META robots tag? Is the fake price comparison site likely to be causing problems? Are all the links to the site from other domain names but the same IP address likely to be causing problems? Thanks for any help. Sorry for so many questions in one.

  • How to configure Google sitemap links in Wordpress? (without editing its HTML or PHP source code)

    - by Alexander Farber
I run a Wordpress 3.7.1–de_DE site, but don't have much experience with it yet. When my site comes up in a Google search, there are 2 Google sitemap links displayed underneath: One of them points to a non-existent webpage /imprint though and I had to add a page at that URL to workaround this (and I want the URL actually be /impressum anyway since the site is in German and has German URLs). How to configure Google sitemap links in Wordpress (without editing its HTML or PHP source code)?

  • How does the fstab 'defaults' option work? Is relatime recommended?

    - by hushs
I know the fstab defaults option means this: rw,suid, dev, exec, auto, nouser, async. But what if I want to add one more option, for example relatime, should I still add defaults too or they are applied anyway? Is it needed to add at least one option? Some examples: 1. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 defaults 0 2 2. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 0 2 3. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 defaults, relatime 0 2 4. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 relatime 0 2 Is the (2) correct(no option at all)? Are the (1) and (2) the same? Are the (3) and (4) the same? Furthermore, I read in the Ubuntu Community Documentation that in Ubuntu 8.04 relatime was used as default for linux native file systems. Is it still true for 12.04? If yes, then why do I see this if I use the mount command: /dev/sda2 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro) If no, why not? It isn't recommended to use relatime now? I just wanted to apply it to my non system partitions, it is a good idea? EDIT: I found an other command to list the mounted partitions and their options: cat /proc/mounts This is the result of a partition mounted with the defaults option in fstab: /dev/sdb2 /media/adat ext3 rw,relatime,errors=continue,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 This is the output of mount for the same partition: /dev/sdb2 on /media/adat type ext3 (rw) And here is both result if the same partition mounted from Nautilus as a non-root user: /dev/sdb2 /media/adat ext3 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,errors=continue,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sdb2 on /media/adat type ext3 (rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=udisks) So it looks like relatime is used if we mount an ext partition in 12.04. So it is unneeded to add it manually. So my problem is broadly solved. But I still can't see why the options that should be in the defaults are not listed even with the cat /proc/mounts. Maybe there is a third and even better method to list the partition mount options :)

  • android multitouch problem

    - by Max
Im aware that there a a couple of posts on this matter, but Ive tried all of them and none of them gets rid of my problem. Im starting to get close to the end of my game so I bought a cabel to try it on a real phone, and as I expected my multitouch dosnt work. I use 2 joysticks, one to move my character and one to change his direction so he can shoot while walking backwards etc. my local variable: public void update(MotionEvent event) { if (event == null && lastEvent == null) { return; } else if (event == null && lastEvent != null) { event = lastEvent; } else { lastEvent = event; } int index = event.getActionIndex(); int pointerId = event.getPointerId(index); statement for left Joystick: if (pointerId == 0 && event.getAction() == MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN && (int) event.getX() > steeringxMesh - 50 && (int) event.getX() < steeringxMesh + 50 && (int) event.getY() > yMesh - 50 && (int) event.getY() < yMesh + 50) { dragging = true; } else if (event.getAction() == MotionEvent.ACTION_UP) { dragging = false; } if (dragging) { //code for moving my character statement for my right joystick: if (pointerId == 1 && event.getAction() == MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN && (int) event.getX() > shootingxMesh - 50 && (int) event.getX() < shootingxMesh + 50 && (int) event.getY() > yMesh - 50 && (int) event.getY() < yMesh + 50) { shooting = true; } else if (event.getAction() == MotionEvent.ACTION_UP) { shooting = false; } if (shooting) { // code for aiming } This class is my main-Views onTouchListener and is called in a update-method that gets called in my game-loop, so its called every frame. Im really at a loss here, I've done a couple of tutorials and Ive tried all relevant solutions to similar posts. Can post entire Class if necessary but I think this is all the relevant code. Just hope someone can make some sence out of this.
