    I wonder what are .net technologies / c# language improvements you consider as breakthrough in .net era for the last 5-10 years. I mean technologies that shifted developers mind. For example direct-x made assembler nearly abandoned for game programming in the end of XX century and JQuery extremely simplified ajax web development as well as javascript code reusability. What kind of breakthrough .net technologies you expect in the future and what modern .net technologies are just a light evolution of well known approaches. Do you consider .net 4.0 parallel extensions and other improvements as breakthrough, or may be we have reached the point when nothing radical is expected in modern programming?

  • Tips on managing dependencies for a release?

    Our system comprises many .NET websites, class libraries, and a MSSQL database. We use SVN for source control and TeamCity to automatically build to a Test server. Our team is normally working on 4 or 5 projects at a time. We try to lump many changes into a largish rollout every 2-4 weeks. My problem is with keeping track of all the dependencies for a rollout. Example: Website A cannot go live until we've rolled out Branch X of Class library B, built in turn against the Trunk of Class library C, which needs Config Updates Y and Z and Database Update D, which needs Migration Script E... It gets even more complex - like making sure each developer's project is actually compatible with the others and are building against the same versions. Yes, this is a management issue as much as a technical issue. Currently our non-optimal solution is: a whiteboard listing features that haven't gone live yet relying on our memory and intuition when planning the rollout, until we're pretty sure we've thought of everything... a dry-run on our Staging environment. It's a good indication but we're often not sure if Staging is 100% in sync with Live - part of the problem I'm hoping to solve. some amount of winging it on rollout day. So far so good, minus a few close calls. But as our system grows, I'd like a more scientific release management system allowing for more flexibility, like being able to roll out a single change or bugfix on it's own, safe in the knowledge that it won't break anything else. I'm guessing the best solution involves some sort of version numbering system, and perhaps using a project management tool. We're a start-up, so we're not too hot on religiously sticking to rigid processes, but we're happy to start, providing it doesn't add more overhead than it's worth. I'd love to hear advice from other teams who have solved this problem.

  • Why not lump all service classes into a Factory method (instead of injecting interfaces)?

    We are building an ASP.NET project, and encapsulating all of our business logic in service classes. Some is in the domain objects, but generally those are rather anemic (due to the ORM we are using, that won't change). To better enable unit testing, we define interfaces for each service and utilize D.I.. E.g. here are a couple of the interfaces: IEmployeeService IDepartmentService IOrderService ... All of the methods in these services are basically groups of tasks, and the classes contain no private member variables (other than references to the dependent services). Before we worried about Unit Testing, we'd just declare all these classes as static and have them call each other directly. Now we'll set up the class like this if the service depends on other services: public EmployeeService : IEmployeeService { private readonly IOrderService _orderSvc; private readonly IDepartmentService _deptSvc; private readonly IEmployeeRepository _empRep; public EmployeeService(IOrderService orderSvc , IDepartmentService deptSvc , IEmployeeRepository empRep) { _orderSvc = orderSvc; _deptSvc = deptSvc; _empRep = empRep; } //methods down here } This really isn't usually a problem, but I wonder why not set up a factory class that we pass around instead? i.e. public ServiceFactory { virtual IEmployeeService GetEmployeeService(); virtual IDepartmentService GetDepartmentService(); virtual IOrderService GetOrderService(); } Then instead of calling: _orderSvc.CalcOrderTotal(orderId) we'd call _svcFactory.GetOrderService.CalcOrderTotal(orderid) What's the downfall of this method? It's still testable, it still allows us to use D.I. (and handle external dependencies like database contexts and e-mail senders via D.I. within and outside the factory), and it eliminates a lot of D.I. setup and consolidates dependencies more. I want to add a condition that if the parameter of @IsPrestigeFeatured = 0 then update all of the other rows < PropertyId in the IsprestigeFeatured column to 0 and if @IsPrestigeFeatured = 1 then IsprestigeFeatured = 1 where propertyId = PropertyId.     Hello, guys. I've got annoyed problem. I've got WCF service(basicHttpBinding with Transport security Https). This service implements contract which consists 2 methods. LoadData. GetData. GetData works OK!. My client received pachage ~2Mb size without problems. All work correctly. But when I try load data by bool LoadData(Stream data); - signature of method I'll get (413) Request Entity Too Large. Stack Trace: Server stack trace: ?   • Using java2d user space measurements with TextLayout and LineBreakMeasurer

    I have a java2d image defined in user space (mm) to print an identity card. The transformation to pixels is by using an AffineTransform for the required DPI (Screen or print). The font size is calculated as best vertical fit for the number of lines in an area with the calculation as below. E.g. attr.put(TextAttribute.SIZE, (geTextArea().getHeight() / noOfLines - LINE_SPACING) ); When using g2d.drawString("Some text to display", x, y); the font size appears correct. Does anyone have a better way of doing text layout in user space co-ords?

    I have an Executors.newFixedThreadPool(1) that I send several different tasks to (all implementing Runnable), and they get queued up and run sequentially correct? What is the best way to only allow one of each task to be either running or queued up at one time? I want to ignore all tasks sent to the ExecutorService that are already in the queue.

    I'm still getting my feet wet in PHP (my 1st language) and I've reached the competency level where I can code one page that handles all sorts of different related requests. They generally have a structure like this: (psuedo code) <?php include 'include/functions.php'; IF authorized IF submit (add data) ELSE IF update (update data) ELSE IF list (show special data) ELSE IF tab switch (show new area) ELSE display vanilla (show default) ELSE "must be registered/logged-in" ?> <HTML> // snip <?php echo $output; ?> // snip </HTML> and it all works nicely, and quite quickly which is cool. But I'm still sorta feeling my way in the dark... and would like some input from the pros regarding this type of page design... is it a good long-term structure? (it seems easily expanded...) are there security risks particular to this design? are there corners I should avoid painting myself into? Just curious about what lies ahead, really...

    I am using a crystal reports through crystal report viewer server side control in a webform. I am using a webform because the crystal report viewer provides an easy way to export to PDF and to Excel. My problem is that when I deploy to the server, the crystal report .rpt file does not get copied to the target folder. My solution structure looks like this: Solution |-Content |-Controllers |-Models |-Views |-etc... |-Reports |-Default.aspx |-Report.rpt On the server, the Report.rpt file is missing after I publish.

But when I close terminal window (log off), of course, CentOS Linux kills my program. I see two guesses: run from a different user in background or make a daemon. I need help in each situation.     How do I make the left and right gutters different colors with 960.gs? When I try something simple like: <div style="background-color: green"> <div class="container_16"> <div class="grid_16"> test </div> </div> </div> <div style="background-color: cyan"> <div class="container_16"> <div class="grid_16"> test </div> </div> </div> The green and cyan colors are ignored. Seems like the "grid_16" class removes the color for some reason? My goal is being able to have different sections of the page in different colors all the way across the page, even past 960 pixels. So if someone makes their browser 1200px the left and right sides have the right color and the rest of the grid system is all contained within the 960 pixels in the middle. I could add a background color to 'body' to do this for just 1 color, but I want multiple colors in the page. Like different colored horizontal stripes. Thanks.

  • Top 10 collection completion - a monster in-query formula in MySQL?

    I've got the following tables: User Basic Data (unique) [userid] [name] [etc] User Collection (one to one) [userid] [game] User Recorded Plays (many to many) [userid] [game] [scenario] [etc] Game Basic Data (unique) [game] [total_scenarios] I would like to output a table that shows the collection play completion percentage for the Top 10 users in descending order of %: Output Table [userid] [collection_completion] 3 95% 1 81% 24 68% etc etc In my mind, the calculation sequence for ONE USER is: grab user's total owned scenarios from User Collection joined with Game Basic Data and COUNT(gbd.total_scenarios) grab all recorded plays by COUNT(DISTINCT scenario) for that user Divide all recorded plays by total owned scenarios So that's 2 queries and a little PHP massage at the end. For a list of users sorted by completion percentage things get a little more complicated. I figure I could grab all users' collection totals in one query, and all users recorded plays in another, and then do the calcs and sort the final array in PHP, but it seems like overkill to potentially be doing all that for 1000+ users when I only ever want the Top 10. Is there a wicked monster query in MySQL that could do all that and LIMIT 10? Or is sticking with PHP handling the bulk of the work the way to go in this case?

  • Trying to 'Make' CUDA SDK, ld cannot find library, ldconfig says it can.

    I know there are many other questions similar to this one, but none of the solutions posited there are working for me Basically, making the SDK sample files, i get /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lcuda which would be an easy enough 'find the library and throw it to ldconfig', except ldconfig already says it has it... $ sudo ldconfig -v | grep cuda /usr/local/cuda/lib64: libcudartemu.so.3 -> libcudartemu.so.3.0.14 libcudart.so.3 -> libcudart.so.3.0.14 /usr/local/cuda/lib: libcudartemu.so.3 -> libcudartemu.so.3.0.14 libcudart.so.3 -> libcudart.so.3.0.14 libcuda.so.1 -> libcuda.so.195.36.15 libcuda.so.1 -> libcuda.so.195.36.15 libicudata.so.42 -> libicudata.so.42.1 And I checked, there is a symlink libcuda.so -> libcuda.so.1 but I'm still confused as to why libcuda.so -> ... doesnt show up I must be missing something really obvious. Any ideas?

    I have a resource /system/resource And I wish to ask the system a boolean question about the resource that can't be answered by processing on the client (i.e I can't just GET the resource and look through the actual resource data - it requires some processing on the backend using data not available to the client). eg /system/resource/related/otherresourcename I want this is either return true or false. Does anyone have any best practice examples for this type of interaction? Possibilities that come to my mind: use of HTTP status code, no returned body (smells wrong) return plain text string (True, False, 1, 0) - Not sure what string values are appropriate to use, and furthermore this seems to be ignoring the Accept media type and always returning plain text come up with a boolean object for each of my support media types and return the appropriate type (a JSON document with a single boolean result, an XML document with a single boolean field). However this seems unwieldy. I don't particularly want to get into a long discussion about the true meaning of a RESTful system etc - I have used the word REST in the title because it best expresses the general flavour of system I am designing (even if perhaps I am tending more towards RPC over the web rather than true REST). However, if someone has some thoughts on how a true RESTful system avoids this problem entirely I would be happy to hear them.

  • How do I best remove the unicode characters that XHTML regards as non-valid using php?

    I run a forum designed to support an international mathematics group. I've recently switched it to unicode for better support of international characters. In debugging this conversion, I've discovered that not all unicode characters are considered as valid XHTML (the relevant website appears to be http://www.w3.org/TR/unicode-xml/). One of the steps that the forum software goes through before presenting the posts to the browser is an XHTML validation/sanitisation step. It seems a reasonable idea that at that stage it should remove any unicode characters that XHTML doesn't like. So my question is: Is there a standard (or best) way of doing this in PHP? (The forum is written in PHP, by the way.) I guess that the failsafe would be a simple str_replace (if that's also the best, do I need to do anything extra to make sure it works properly with unicode?) but that would involve me having to go through the XHTML DTD (or the above-referenced W3 page) carefully to figure out what characters to list in the search part of str_replace, so if this is the best way, has someone already done that so that I can steal, err, copy, it? (Incidentally, the character that caused the problem was U+000C, the 'formfeed', which (according to the W3 page) is valid HTML but invalid XHTML!)

    Hi, I seem to recall that it's possible to return the resulting object count from an NSPredicate in CoreData without actually performing a fetch, but I can't find any reference to this.
