    - by user293163

  • java Swing Listeners: components listening at each others.

    - by Pierre
    Hi all, I want to code two JList (categories and items). When I click one category it should select all the items for that category and when I click on one item it should select its categories. So both JList will have a ListSelectionListener listening at each other and changing the selection. Should I fear about some a of "loop" ? Is there a way to tell that an Event has been consumed ? how do people manage that kind of situation ? Thanks

  • java: converting part of a ByteBuffer to a string

    - by Jason S
    I have a ByteBuffer containing bytes that were derived by String.getBytes(charsetName), where "containing" means that the string comprises the entire sequence of bytes between the ByteBuffer's position() and limit(). What's the best way for me to get the string back? (assuming I know the encoding charset) Is there anything better than the following (which seems a little clunky) byte[] ba = new byte[bbuf.remaining()]; bbuf.get(ba); try { String s = new String(ba, charsetName); } catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) { /* take appropriate action */ }

  • Java Sound Clip Looping Frame Position

    - by InsertNickHere
    Hi, I have a little problem with a loopting clip: If you have a soundfile e.g. 20000 samples long, the frame position will not reset after looping, so I get values that are "out of bounds" of the original soundfile. As I want to draw a position marker on my waveform, I'm a bit confused how to achive. At this time I just get myClip.getLongFramePosition() but this does not work as described above. Does anyone have an idea how to fix that? Is there a possibility to count how often a clip was looped before? Regards

  • java phone number validation....

    - by user69514
    Here is my problem: Create a constructor for a telephone number given a string in the form xxx-xxx-xxxx or xxx-xxxx for a local number. Throw an exception if the format is not valid. So I was thinking to validate it using a regular expression, but I don't know if I'm doing it correctly. Also what kind of exception would I have to throw? Do I need to create my own exception? public TelephoneNumber(String aString){ if(isPhoneNumberValid(aString)==true){ StringTokenizer tokens = new StringTokenizer("-"); if(tokens.countTokens()==3){ areaCode = Integer.parseInt(tokens.nextToken()); exchangeCode = Integer.parseInt(tokens.nextToken()); number = Integer.parseInt(tokens.nextToken()); } else if(tokens.countTokens()==2){ exchangeCode = Integer.parseInt(tokens.nextToken()); number = Integer.parseInt(tokens.nextToken()); } else{ //throw an excemption here } } } public static boolean isPhoneNumberValid(String phoneNumber){ boolean isValid = false; //Initialize reg ex for phone number. String expression = "(\\d{3})(\\[-])(\\d{4})$"; CharSequence inputStr = phoneNumber; Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile(expression); Matcher matcher = pattern.matcher(inputStr); if(matcher.matches()){ isValid = true; } return isValid; } Hi sorry, yes this is homework. For this assignments the only valid format are xxx-xxx-xxxx and xxx-xxxx, all other formats (xxx)xxx-xxxx or xxxxxxxxxx are invalid in this case. I would like to know if my regular expression is correct

  • Java String replaceAll with conditions

    - by user1483570
    I am not good in regular expressions and I need help in replacing the string. String str = "Name_XYZ_"; str = "XYZ_NAME_"; So how can I replace "Name_" or "_NAME_" from above two strings with empty string? The conditions are "Name" can be in any case and it can be at index 0 or at any index but preceded by "_". So far I tried, String replacedString = str.replaceAll("(?i)Name_", ""); // This is not correct. This is not the homework. I am working on XML file that needs such kind of processing. Please help. Thank you.

  • Java's Swing Threading

    - by nevets1219
    My understanding is that if I start up another thread to perform some actions, I would need to SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait or SwingUtilities.invokeLater to update the GUI while I'm in said thread. Please correct me if I'm wrong. What I'm trying to accomplish is relatively straightforward: when the user clicks submit, I want to (before performing any actions) disable the submit button, perform the action, and at the end of the action re-enable the button. My method to perform the action updates the GUI directly (displays results) when it gets the results back. This action basically queries a server and gets some results back. What I have so far is: boolean isRunning = false; synchronized handleButtonClick() { if ( isRunning == false ) { button.setEnabled( false ); isRunning = true; doAction(); } } doAction() { new Thread() { try { doAction(); // Concern A } catch ( ... ) { displayStackTrace( ... ); // Concern B } finally { SwingUtilities.invokeLater ( /* simple Runnable to enable button */ ); isRunning = false; } } } For both of my concerns above, do I would have to use SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait since they both will update the GUI? All GUI updates revolve around updating JTextPane. Do I need to in my thread check if I'm on EDT and if so I can call my code (regardless of whether it updates the GUI or not) and NOT use SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait?

  • Sorting an array of strings in reverse alphabetical order in Java

    - by Quacky
    I've been tasked with turning this code into a reverse sort, but for the life of me cannot figure out how to do it. These are my sort, findlargest and swap methods. I have a feeling I am missing something glaringly obvious here, any help would be really appreciated. public static void sort(String[] arr) { for (int pass = 1; pass < arr.length; pass++) { int largestPos = findLargest(arr, arr.length - pass); if (largestPos != arr.length - pass) { swap(arr, largestPos, arr.length - pass); } } } public static int findLargest(String[] arr, int num) { int largestPos = 0; for (int i = 1; i <= num; i++) { if (arr[i].compareToIgnoreCase(arr[largestPos]) > 0) { largestPos = i; } } return largestPos; } public static void swap(String[] arr, int first, int second) { String temp = arr[first]; arr[first] = arr[second]; arr[second] = temp; } }

  • Implementing Clonable in Java

    - by Artium
    In which cases should I use this way: public A clone() throws CloneNotSupportedException { A clone = (A)super.clone(); clone.x= this.x; return clone; } And in which cases should I use that way: public ShiftedStack clone() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return new A(this.x); } What should I do if x is final and I want to use the first way? Regarding the first way, I understand it like this: we clone the super class and up-cast it, leading to some members uninitialized. After this initialize these members. Is my understanding correct? Thank you.

  • Why is Java String indexOf failing?

    - by Binaryrespawn
    Hi all, this must be quite simple but I am having great difficulty. You see I am trying to find a string within another string as follows. e = input.indexOf("-->"); s = input.indexOf("<!--"); input = input.replace(input.substring(s, e + 3), " "); The integers e and s are returning -1 in that it was not found and this is causing the replace method to fail. The test string I am using is "Chartered Certified<!--lol--> Accountants (ACCA)". I tried to creat a new string object and pass in the string as an argument as follows e=input.indexOf(new String("<!--")); This yielded the same result. Any ideas ?

    Hi, I have a question. package org.study.algos; public class Study { public static void main(String[] args) { A a = new A(); a.m1(null); } } class A { public void m1(String s) { System.out.println("String"); System.out.println(s); } public void m1(Object obj) { System.out.println("Object"); System.out.println(obj); } } Here, the output is String null Why does the JVM resolve the method to one with a String argument? Thanks in advance J

  • Adapting pseudocode to java implementation for finding the longest word in a trie

    - by user1766888
    Referring to this question I asked: How to find the longest word in a trie? I'm having trouble implementing the pseudocode given in the answer. findLongest(trie): //first do a BFS and find the "last node" queue <- [] queue.add(trie.root) last <- nil map <- empty map while (not queue.empty()): curr <- queue.pop() for each son of curr: queue.add(son) map.put(son,curr) //marking curr as the parent of son last <- curr //in here, last indicate the leaf of the longest word //Now, go up the trie and find the actual path/string curr <- last str = "" while (curr != nil): str = curr + str //we go from end to start curr = map.get(curr) return str This is what I have for my method public static String longestWord (DTN d) { Queue<DTN> holding = new ArrayQueue<DTN>(); holding.add(d); DTN last = null; Map<DTN,DTN> test = new ArrayMap<DTN,DTN>(); DTN curr; while (!holding.isEmpty()) { curr = holding.remove(); for (Map.Entry<String, DTN> e : curr.children.entries()) { holding.add(curr.children.get(e)); test.put(curr.children.get(e), curr); } last = curr; } curr = last; String str = ""; while (curr != null) { str = curr + str; curr = test.get(curr); } return str; } I'm getting a NullPointerException at: for (Map.Entry<String, DTN> e : curr.children.entries()) How can I find and fix the cause of the NullPointerException of the method so that it returns the longest word in a trie?

  • Freeing Java memory at a specific point in time

    - by Marcus
    Given this code, where we load a lot of data, write it to a file, and then run an exe.. void myMethod() { Map stuff = createMap(); //Consumes 250 MB memory File file = createFileInput(stuff); //Create input for exe runExectuable(file); //Run Windows exe } What is the best way to release the memory consumed by stuff prior to running the exe? We don't need this in memory any more as we have dumped the data to a file for input to the exe... Is the best method to just set stuff = null prior to runExecutable(file)?

  • Java Split not working as expected

    - by daaabears
    I am trying to use a simple split to break up the following string: 00-00000 My expression is: ^([0-9][0-9])(-)([0-9])([0-9])([0-9])([0-9])([0-9]) And my usage is: String s = "00-00000"; String pattern = "^([0-9][0-9])(-)([0-9])([0-9])([0-9])([0-9])([0-9])"; String[] parts = s.split(pattern); If I play around with the Pattern and Matcher classes I can see that my pattern does match and the matcher tells me my groupCount is 7 which is correct. But when I try and split them I have no luck.

  • Java: stopping long HTTP operations

    - by kilonet
    I'm using Apache Common library for HTTP operations: HttpClient client = getClient(); PutMethod put = new PutMethod(url); FileRequestEntity countingFileRequestEntity = new FileRequestEntity(file, "application/octet-stream"); put.setRequestEntity(countingFileRequestEntity); client.executeMethod(put); put.releaseConnection(); I wonder how can safely interrup long HTTP operation. Running it in new thread and stopping it seems to be wrong way. HttpMethodBase has abort() method, but I can't understand how to use it because client.executeMethod blocks execution until it complets

  • Java- screen capture behind the application.

    - by Auxiliary
    Is there a way to capture the screen but without the app itself getting shown. I know how to minimize or make a frame invisible but this has to be done real fast cos it's going to happen alot in each second (at least once every second). I want it to look something like the magnifier in Windows Vista/7. (The app can see behind itself.) Thanks in advance.
