  • libtool failed with exit code 1 on XCode 4.3

    I have XCode 4.3 and I am getting this frustrating xml-lib related error. I have a feeling its because of the fact that 4.3 is not using /Developer folder but instead the /Applications/XCode.app/...   • How do I politely tell a colleague to RTFM?

    I think by now, I've transitioned from a junior developer to an "intermediate" developer. Previously, whenever someone would ask me a question, I'd gleefully answer them simply because I was happy to be of use to someone and wanted to prove my worth as a developer. Now it's gotten to the point where I can't get work done because I'm constantly answering questions that can be answered just by spending a few seconds looking at documentation or searching google (sometimes from developers more senior than I). On one hand, I genuinely want to help them out and enjoy teaching other people. However, I just don't have enough bandwidth to keep answering these kinds of questions. How do I handle this kind of thing politely?

  • Using a Kanban board per developer

    I have been trying to get our software department to adopt some kind development process methodolgy. We only have 9 developers, and about as many projects. Currently, we can only be described as chaotic. Or perhaps 'crisis driven development' as I've seen another SO user call it. Using Kanban seems like a it could be a good fit for us. So I've discussed it with everyone else, everyone thought it sounded good. But when we discussed how the board(s) should be arranged, everyone wanted to do one board per person. Now, I've never tried Kanban, or any methodology really, but it feels like having each person managed on their own board would negate the benefits a Kanban process is supposed to provide. This notion makes me sad, and want to say 'ho-hum let's scrap this whole idea.' Do you think implementing a Kanban board per developer can be worthwhile?

  • How can I debug this web service http handler?

    Hello everyone, I am building a Httphandler following these instructions here It manipulates HTTP POST and HTTP GET. I have a client with two buttons two POST and GET. After i've tested and happy everythings working I move it from localhost to IIS. Now when I do this I get an exception in the POST handler code. How on earth can I debug this code line by line? I managed to do this awhile ago, I thought it was by attaching to process but I can't work it out. I can emulate GET just by typing address in browser, post im not sure about. I've tried telnetting and sending it from there but haven't had any luck.

I've thought about the options and want to stay as SEO minded as i can but i'm struggling to think of a way i could strike a balance between having a really smart, anti-aliased looking heading at the top of their site under the logo but have it searchable/crawlable by the big G (google).     I am a single developer without another computer to backup my projects on. I'm looking into source controls and I came across git but all the setup tutorials are targeted to an external server. I used to use SourceGear Vault, but seeing that git is getting alot of attention, I might as well familiarize myself with it. I do not always have internet access. Is Git suitable for me?   • ASP.NET Controls Not Recognized

    I just installed the release version of Visual Studio 2010, and it looks like there's something wrong with the standard ASP.NET server controls. When I create a basic server control, such as a TextBox, the editor underlines it in green and says (I also get no intellisense for ASP.NET controls): Element 'TextBox' is not a known element. This can occur if there is a compilation error in the Web site, or the Web.config file is missing. The web site builds fine, and the Web.config file is not missing: <?xml version="1.0"?> <configuration> <system.web> <compilation debug="false" targetFramework="4.0" /> </system.web> </configuration> The controls work just fine in the code-behind, and they function correctly when I run the site. Is there some configuration problem here?

There is a separate installer package to install the VS2008 Shell that is compatible with Windows 2008, but it fails too. Has anyone else been able to install Team Explorer 2008 on Windows Server 2008?

  • Is there a utility to visualise / isolate and watch application calls

    Note: I'm not sure what to search for so guidance on that may be just as valuable as an answer. I'm looking for a way to visually compare activity of two applications (in this case a webserver with php communicating with the system or mysql or network devices, etc) such that I can compare the performance at a glance. I know there are tools to generate data dumps from benchmarks for apache and some available for php for tracing that you can dump and analyse but what I'm looking for is something that can report performance metrics visually from data on calls (what called what, how long did it take, how much memory did it consume, how can that be represented visually in a call stack) and present it graphically as if it were a topology or layered visual with different elements of system calls occupying different layers. A typical visual may consist of (e.g. using swim diagrams as just one analogy): Network (details here relevant to network diagnostics) | ^ back out v | Linux (details here related to firewall/routing diagnostics) ^ back to network | | V ^ back to system Apache (details here related to web request) | | ^ response to V | apache PHP (etc) PHP---------->other accesses to php files/resources----- | ^ v | MySQL (total time) MySQL | ^ V | Each call listed + time + tables hit/record returned My aim would be to be able to 'inspect' a request/range of requests over a period of time to see what constituted the activity at that point in time and trace it from beginning to end as a diagnostic tool. Is there any such work in this direction? I realise it would be intensive on the server, but the intention is to benchmark and analyse processes against each other for both educational and professional reasons and a visual aid is a great eye-opener compared to raw statistics or dozens of discrete activity vs time graphs. It's hard to show the full cycle. Any pointers welcome. Thanks!     I'm calling a stored function like this: select XML_INVOICE.GENERATE_XML_DOC('84200006823') from dual; The query results then show up in a table underneath, which I can right click and select "Export Date" - XML <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF8' ?> <RESULTS> <ROW> <COLUMN NAME="XML_INVOICE.GENERATE_XML_DOC('84200006823')" <![CDATA[<xml>yada yada</xml><morexml>...]]></COLUMN> </ROW> </RESULTS> The problem is the "..." - SQL Developer (2.1.0.63 on Linux) is not showing all the data - its truncating the result and appending the ellipsis. This is of no use to me. How do I get it to export ALL of my data?

    Is there a way to display the path of the solution in the Visual Studio window's name? By default it displays (SolutionName) - Microsoft Visual Studio, I would like it to instead show something like (SolutionName) - (PathToSolution) - Microsoft Visual Studio. The reason behind this is I can have multiple versions of a project checked out at a time (staging and trunk for example) and I'd like a quick way of checking without going through prompts etc.

    Hello, I'm a Delphiholic for quite some time now and lately I was thinking of learning some C# as well, however I'm kinda' "afraid of the unknown", I've done some simple apps as a test drive for C# and I have to admit that I've liked it, HOWEVER I do not really like the IDE... that being said here's the question that I would appreciate if others who went down this path would answer: As a Delphi developer what are the "main basic" changes from the Delphi language(by basic I mean basic -- utility functions, streams, etc.), I'm used to add "System, Classes, Windows" to uses not "use System.XXX.YYY.ZZZ", I'm trying to make a partial equality in my mind from Delphi to C# until I can see where does Delphi go hand-in-hand with C# and so on... I hope the question is pretty clear, if not, do not hesitate to swear me and I'll try to clarify as well as I can :-)

  • Is it possible to remove folders from a web application build process in vs 2010?

    I had previously asked this question. At the time I was working with VS 2008. To restate the question. I have a web application that generates 1000's of small xml files in a certain directory. I would like to exclude this directory from the build process in visual studio 2010. With vs 2008 it was not possible. Has anything changed? Besides the general wait for VS to iterate through this directory with each build, it also strains my system resources, so I would like to exclude it from the project, but the dir and files need to physically exist on disk, because they are part of the application. Any OOB VS 2010 solutions, or any good workarounds? Thanks

    I have heard people say that the large fall in people graduating with CS based degrees will soon cause developer salaries to rise due to the effects of a smaller supply but ever increasing demand. Do people really think that this is true? To my mind there are a couple of reasons this won't happen: Outsourcing With 'DIY' style languages like PHP and the attitudes of many of the communities behind these languages becoming ever more popular (e.g. the learn yourself, don't need to go to university way of thinking) not many employers will care if developers have degrees in CS or not.

  • Web server connection to SQL Server: Response Packet [Malformed Packet]

    I am seeing very, very sluggish performance between my web server (which handles HTTP web services connections) and a separate server running Microsoft SQL Server 2008. I have been capturing packet traffic on the web server trying to understand why things are running so slowly. I am using Wireshark to capture the packet traffic. The apparent problem is that the web server is sending TDS packets to the data server--each packet followed by a response from the data server with Response Packet [Malformed Packet] in the Info field. The packet sent from the web server appears to have an invalid checksum. Has anyone seen this type of problem before? Any ideas?

  • Picasa “sync to web” folders do not stay in sync

    I have multiple folders from the Picasa software that were moved to my Google+ profile using the "sync to web" feature. At some point I noticed that some of these folders were on Google+ and had the green upload arrow in Picasa, however the "sync to web" option was disabled. I tried to re-enable the "sync to web" option and it starts loading but after a few seconds the "sync to web" option is back to disabled. I get no error message, it just switches back to disable. Is there any way I could leave the option enabled? Out of around 80 something albums synced to Google+ only 3-4 are not able to have the "sync to web" option enabled. Thanks.
