  • How to copy VirtualBox VDI contents to a partition and dual boot the OS from it?

    I'm a Linux user but I keep a compressed Windows XP ISO with me on a pen drive for the case I absolutely need Windows to do something. This works in VirtualBox most of the time. But now I want to play some games, so I would like to run the Windows image natively. My computer don't have CD drive so cannot just burn the ISO and make an install normally. What I trying to do is moving the installed Windows image to a physical NTFS partition on my HDD and set up GRUB to let me dual boot it. I found many tutorials that deal with making VDI to physical drive. But they assume I want to overwrite my entire drive. Moving the raw disk image with dd to the partition resulted in a corrupt partition. I also tried the VMDK trick to use that empty partition and install the Windows on it. Although the text mode phase of the installation finishes without problems, the VM won't work, either crashes and keeps rebooting or just immediately or freezes (depending on how I created the VMDK, with -rawdisk /dev/sda3 or -rawdisk /dev/sda -partition 3).

  • How to copy the value from a cell to another (using a formula), but not formula from the source cell

    I'm making use of NOW() function at many places in my spreadsheet, which is basically a checklist document. So my requirement is that for each step, it should record the datetime at which that step was completed. But whenever the Now() is being used... all the previously updated cells withe datetime are also getting updated again. Hence at the end of the day, am not able to get the detailed time at which each of those steps are completed. This is how I've created as of now: Used a Checkbox for each step. Once the step is complete, on clicking the Checkbox, it will update the cell A1 as "Completed". In the cell B1, I've put the following function which will check for the value in A1. If it is "Completed", then it will update the value of B1 with the current datetime using Now() =IF(A1="Completed";NOW();"") Please let me know a solution for this. Also if there any other alternative.

I tried & (bg) but i need to be able to keep doing it , the bg only allows me to do it once The point of it is when i type ctrl C it should terminate the original test.sh but it should also call itself before terminating hence create a new process.

  • How do I determine if an unbootable copy of Windows is a 64-bit or 32-bit installation?

    I need to reinstall Windows on a laptop. I have the product key (its on the laptop), and I know it is Windows 7 Home Premium. I need a way to determine if 64-bit or 32-bit Windows is installed, so that I can download the correct one from Microsoft. The computer is messed up so I do not have access to Windows to check it with systeminfo. I took out the hard drive and hooked it to another computer, but when I run systeminfo it just gives information for the host computer, I did not see a way to change this.

  • How I can compile this C++ code that fails with "'::main' must return 'int'"? [migrated]

    I have tried to find a solution that make batch file start flashing on taskbar and only good solution was this post on Stack Overflow. But I can't compile the code with WinGW or anything else to EXE, only getting this error: hello.cpp:6:32: error: '::main' must return 'int' Right now, I'm using TDM-GCC to compile code, because it's bit better... Can somebody give me code that actually works or even better compile it to EXE already? P.S. Even more better if somebody could compile this Delphi code, because I can't find any software that's free.

  • How to copy a folder with many files with integrity check?

    I just got a new hard drive and I want to move many of the folders from the old hard drive to the new one, but I want to make sure everything is copied over correctly. I tried using md5summer to generate md5 sums of the original files, copied files over and then tried to compare md5 sums of both sets of files. This took ages because there are many large video files. Is there any software I can use to make this process as painless as possible? I just need basic file integrity checking. Thanks in advance

    Recently I was tasked to create an SSIS application that will query a database, split the results with certain criteria and create CSV file for every result and upload the file to a Sharepoint Document Library site. I've search the web and compiled the steps I've taken to build the solution. Summary: A) Create a proxy class of WSS Copy.asmx. B) Create a wrapper class for the proxy class and add a mechanism to check if the file is existing and delete method. C) Create an SSIS and call the wrapper class to transfer the files.   A) Creating Proxy Class 1) Go to Visual Studio Command Prompt type wsdl http://[sharepoint site]/_vti_bin/Copy.asmx this will generate the proxy class (Copy.cs) that will be added to the solution. 2) Add Copy.cs to solution and create another constructor for Copy() that will accept additional parameters url, userName, password and domain.   public Copy(string url, string userName, string password, string domain) { this.Url = url; this.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(userName, password, domain); } 3) Add a namespace.     B) Wrapper Class Create a C# new library that references the Proxy Class.         C) Create SSIS SSIS solution is composed of:   1) Execute SQL Task, returns a single column rows containing the criteria. 2) Foreach Loop Container - loops per result from query (SQL Task) and creates a CSV file on a certain folder. 3) Script Task - calls the wrapper class to upload CSV files located on a certain folder to targer WSS Document Library Note: I've created another overload of CopyFiles that accepts a Directory Info instead of file location that loops thru the contents of the folder.     I have been hearing a lot about the website See[Mike]Code. Basically, the site creates an interview url and a job candidate url and lets you see the potential programmer’s code (specifically .NET developer). Below is the candidate’s URL   Below is the interviewer url   So you might think, ah, this is a good thing. We can screen candidates cheaper and more efficiently. In reality, this is only a good thing if you want your programmer to develop using notepad.  I use the most efficient tools that exist to do my job. I would simply fire up VS2010 and type “for” and hit the tab key twice and get the following template.   I have no problem keeping MSDN/Google in one of my monitors. I spend time learning VS macros and using Aurora XAML/Expression to produce my XAML for WPF. Sure, I can write a for loop without using the VS Macro, but the real question is, “Why should I?”. My point being, if you really want to test a .NET programmer knowledge then fire up his native working environment and let him use the features of the IDE to develop the simple 10-line program. For a more sophisticated program, then give him 20 minutes and allow access to msdn/google. If the programmer cannot find at the right path then give him the boot.

Next Tuesday is of course Election Day so you have to make sure you vote early in order to get over to CMAP for the 7:00PM presentation. I will be co-presenting this talk with my 5th grade son.     I have tried avidemux2_cli, mencoder, ffmpeg, cat.. But this doesn't always work (With the most of the times the error is that the audio codec is not the same) Maybe i put wrong options in the commands. So the commands: cat Sample.avi rrr.avi > complete.avi ffmpeg -i Sample.avi -i output.avi -vcodec copy -acodec copy complete.avi mencoder -ovc lavc -oac copy Sample.avi rrr.avi -o complete.avi avidemux2_cli --audio-codec copy --video-codec copy --output-format avi --load Sample.avi -append output.avi --save video.avi The cat problem is that it doesn't show error but it doesn't work always..Like the complete.avi will be exactly the same with Sample.avi Fmmpeg does nothing. The complete.avi is always the same with Sample.avi Mencoder error: All files must have identical audio codec and format for -oac copy. So the complete.avi is the same with Sample.avi avidemux2_cli there is no error but the complete.avi is again the same with Sample.avi.. So to sum up, all complete.avi are the same with Sample.avi.. And the problem is that they don't have the same audio codec ( i quess ).. Any ideas?

  • Can I re-license Academic Free License code under 2-Clause BSD / ITC?

    I want to fork a piece of code licensed under the Academic Free License. For the project, it would be preferable to re-license it under the ISC License or the 2-Clause BSD license, which are equivalent. I understand that the AFL grants me things such as limitation of liability, but licensing consistency is much more important to the project, especially since we're talking about just 800 lines of code, a quarter of which I've modified in some way. And it's very important for me to give these changes back to the community, given the fact that this is software relevant to security - I need the public scrutiny that I'll get by creating a public fork. In short: At the top of the file I want to say this, or something like it: # Licensed under the Academic Free License, version 3 # Copyright (C) 2009 Original Author # Licensed under the ISC License # Copyright (C) 2012 Stefano Palazzo # Copyright (C) 2012 Company Am I allowed to do this? My research so far indicates that it's not clear whether the AFL is GPL-Compatible, and I can't really understand any of the stuff concerning re-licensing to other permissive licenses. As a stop gap, I would also be okay with re-licensing under the GPL, however: I can find no consensus (though I can find disagreement) on whether this is allowed at all, and I don't want to risk it, of course.   • Author has inserted copyright into code with gnu public license notice - implications?

    I've found a project on Github that I'm interested in contributing to which claims to be open source and has a GPL license included with it. But the original author has added a copyright notification to each source file. I'm not sure why but I don't feel right contributing to a project that's always going to have someone else's name on it. It really breaks the community-created feel, and makes me uneasy about what the author might choose to do with the project next. What are the implications of copyrighting open source GPL code as so?   • Copying files to Truecrypt file container hangs

    I have a dual boot installation with Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bits, NTFS file sytem) and Ubuntu 10.10 (32-bits, ext4 file system). I have installed the version 7.0a of Truecrypt in both Operating Systems. Located in the Windows 7 HDD I have a 150 GB encrypted file container. It is a standard and dynamic file container, which means it's not hidden and uses a sparse file. This file was created using the Windows version of the Truecrypt program. When I logon in Windows the container is mounted as the drive E: and everything works fine! In Ubuntu the Windows's NTFS file system is automaticaly mounted after I logon. I've configured that using the ntfs-config package. In my ~/.profile I have this line to mount the truecrypt's file container: truecrypt /media/7EDEBCFADEBCABB1/Users/Wagner/hd/hd.tc /media/truecrypt1 The file container is mounted after the logon without any problem. I can access it, copy files to/from it, etc. But when I try do copy relatively large amounts of data (~50 MB) to it via nautilus or cp -R, it starts the copy, copies some data until certain point and then it just hangs! The progress bar does not move anymore and nothing happens. There is no error, it just hangs and that's it. I have to kill the process myself. This problem does not happen in Windows: I can copy very large amounts of data to the container and it works great. But in Ubuntu the problem always happens! I mean, whenever I try to copy a bunch of files together the copy process hangs. Does anyone ever faced this problem? Can anyone help? Thanks!

  • How important do you find exception safety to be in your C++ code?

    Every time I consider making my code strongly exception safe, I justify not doing it because it would be so time consuming. Consider this relatively simple snippet: Level::Entity* entity = new Level::Entity(); entity->id = GetNextId(); entity->AddComponent(new Component::Position(x, y)); entity->AddComponent(new Component::Movement()); entity->AddComponent(new Component::Render()); allEntities.push_back(entity); // std::vector entityById[entity->id] = entity; // std::map return entity; To implement a basic exception guarantee, I could use a scoped pointer on the new calls. This would prevent memory leaks if any of the calls were to throw an exception. However, let's say I want to implement a strong exception guarantee. At the least, I would need to implement a shared pointer for my containers (I'm not using Boost), a nothrow Entity::Swap for adding the components atomically, and some sort of idiom for atomically adding to both the Vector and Map. Not only would these be time consuming to implement, but they would be expensive since it involves a lot more copying than the exception unsafe solution. Ultimately, it feels to me like that time spent doing all of that wouldn't be justified just so that the a simple CreateEntity function is strongly exception safe. I probably just want the game to display an error and close at that point anyway. How far do you take this in your own game projects? Is it generally acceptable to write exception unsafe code for a program that can just crash when there is an exception?

  • I have a bad install of Windows on another hard drive and it won't let me install a fresh copy. How do I fix it in Ubuntu 12.04?

    Basically, there was a security issue in the drivers for my graphics card. It was a 64-bit card and I installed 32-bit Windows. Apparently, before SP1 was available, which fixed that issue, 6 trojan horses got in. They stopped SP1 from installing. After going through the ringer several times, I finally talked to a person who knew the problem. It was something about how the drivers tried to transfer between the 32-bit OS and the 64-bit card that left me open. Ever since, my computer has been slow and has had weird issues. Like tinypic wouldn't ever load. Also, certain programs wouldn't install. So I eventually talk to the dude that knew the problem and he takes the reigns and does some diagnostics. He tells me that to fix it I have to format the hard drive and do a fresh install. I'm okay with that because I was planning on it anyway, to upgrade to the 64-bit version. The problem is, how do I do that? I have the disk to install the new copy, but when I go to install it, it tells me I can't and to check the log file. However, I don't know where that log file is, and it wiped my install of Windows out. How do I find the file and as a different route to get to the goal, how do I zero out the drive from Ubuntu 12.04? (I installed the 64-bit version just the other day)

  • Single Responsibility Principle - How Can I Avoid Code Fragmentation?

    I'm working on a team where the team leader is a virulent advocate of SOLID development principles. However, he lacks a lot of experience in getting complex software out of the door. We have a situation where he has applied SRP to what was already quite a complex code base, which has now become very highly fragmented and difficult to understand and debug. We now have a problem not only with code fragmentation, but also encapsulation, as methods within a class that may have been private or protected have been judged to represent a 'reason to change' and have been extracted to public or internal classes and interfaces which is not in keeping with the encapsulation goals of the application. We have some class constructors which take over 20 interface parameters, so our IoC registration and resolution is becoming a monster in its own right. I want to know if there is any 'refactor away from SRP' approach we could use to help fix some of these issues. I have read that it doesn't violate SOLID if I create a number of empty courser-grained classes that 'wrap' a number of closely related classes to provide a single-point of access to the sum of their functionality (i.e. mimicking a less overly SRP'd class implementation). Apart from that, I cannot think of a solution which will allow us to pragmatically continue with our development efforts, while keeping everyone happy. Any suggestions ?

  • Is there any evidence that drugs can actually help programmers produce "better" code? [closed]

    I just read this quote from Steve Jobs: "Doing LSD was one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." Also a quote from that article: He was hardly alone among computer scientists in his appreciation of hallucinogenics and their capacity to liberate human thought from the prison of the mind. Now I'm wondering if there's any evidence to support the theory that drugs can help make a "better" programmer. Has there ever been a study where programmers have been given drugs to see if they could produce "better" code? Is there a well-known programming concept or piece of code which originated from people who were on drugs? EDIT So I did a little more research and it turns out Dennis R. Wier actually documented how he took LSD to wrap his head around a coding project: "At one point in the project I could not get an overall viewpoint for the operation of the entire system. It really was too much for my brain to keep all the subtle aspects and processing nuances clear so I could get a processing and design overview. After struggling with this problem for a few weeks, I decided to use a little acid to see if it would enable a breakthrough, because otherwise, I would not be able to complete the project and be certain of a consistent overall design"[1] There is also an interesting article on wired about Kevin Herbet, who used LSD to solve tough technical problems and chemist Kary Mullis even said "...that LSD had helped him develop the polymerase chain reaction that helps amplify specific DNA sequences." [2]

  • Is there a cheaper non-express non-student, non-msdn version of Visual Studio 2010 that supports plugins in the US than the $710 Professional Edition?

    I've never actually purchased a copy of Visual Studio myself. SharpDevelop and Express edition have always been good enough for my personal use, and my employers always furnished me with the IDEs I needed to serve them. However, I'm thinking of actually paying for a copy for my personal laptop. I need this mainly so I can open solutions that contain web projects. So my question is: Is there an edition cheaper than the $710 Pro edition on Amazon that will do what I need: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-C5E-00521-Visual-Studio-Professional/dp/B0038KTO8S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1287456230&sr=8-2 ? What I need is defined as: Open up a solution with C#, Web App, VB.NET, and Web Projects. Install addins like resharper, testdriven.net, etc, SCM plugins, etc. Some level of db project support. At least to be able to open a dbproj. I only need that for SCM hooks. SSMS and SQLCMD are good enough for actually editing databases. Ability to install F#, IronPython, IronRuby etc. Now naturally I'm a fairly intelligent resourceful person so I realize I can get Visual Studio in a questionable manner. Thats not what I'm looking to do. I want a legal copy, I don't want a student copy, or an MSDN copy. I want a real copy, I just want to make sure I get the cheapest edition that serves my needs.

  • How is determined an impact of a requirement change on the existing code?

    Hi, How companies working on large projects evaluate an impact of a single modification on an existing code? Since my question is probably not very clear, here's an example: Let's take a sample business application which deals with tasks. In the database, each task has a state, 0 being "Pending", ... 5 - "Finished". A new requirement adds a new state, between 2nd and 3rd one. It means that: A constraint on the values 1 - 5 in the database must be changed, Business layer and code contracts must be changed to add a new state, Data access layer must be changed to take in account that, for example the state StateReady is now 6 instead of 5, etc. The application must implement a new state visually, add new controls for it, new localized strings for tool-tips, etc. When an application is written recently by one developer, it's more or less easy to predict every change to do. On the other hand, when an application was written for years by many people, no single person can anticipate every change immediately, without any investigation. So since this situation (such changes in requirements) is very frequent, I imagine there are already some clever techniques and ways to predict the impact. Is there any? Do you know any books which deal about this subject? Note: my question is not related to How do you deal with changing requirements? question. In fact, I'm not interested in evaluating the cost of a change, but rather the way to predict the parts of an application which will be concerned by the change. What will be those changes and how difficult they are really doesn't matter in my question.
