  As the title says, my lecturer gave me a project that i needed to finish in 3 weeks before final semester exams. So i thought i will start now. The requirement is to "build a simple program that has GUI based on all the chapter that we've learned." But i got stuck on WHAT program should i build. Any idea a program that is related to this chapter i've learned? • Getting "System program problem detected" pops up regularly after dist-upgrade

  This started to happen immediately after I had rebooted the first time after doing a system upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10. It first starts with a dialogue that says "System program problem detected". Then when I try to hit 'report problem' not much happens. I am led through a dialogue that always ends up the problem cannot be solved. I am running a MacBook1,1 I am aware this is not a lot of information, however I'm not sure which information I need to publish and how should I obtain it to debug this problem. Here's a screenshot!

  Since my son started going to school, I've been noticing a very serious lack of organizations to encourage kids to program or at least letting them know how to get involved in programming. Are there any groups that you know of to help kids out this area?? And I'm not referring to tools to help kids learn, I'm referring to groups that will help in getting kids interested in programming. Here are a few that I know of: Dreamspark Lego First Robotics Imagine Cup Are there anymore out there? And are there any that work at the elementary - high school levels?? • Should a new programmer nowadays start with C/C++ or OOP language? [closed]

  I've been a programmer for 15+ years. In my time, we all started with C or C++ and then moved to C# or Java. At that time it was a usual practice. Now, my brother wants to follow my steps and I am not sure what advice to give him. So, I am asking the community for an opinion. Should nowadays new programmer with zero programming knowledge start with functional languages (C, C++, etc.) or he should start directly with OOP languages (Java, C#, etc.)? The reply should be considered in the context of my brother's future assignments. He will mainly work on Java mobile applications as well as ASP.NET web apps. He will have to touch with desktop apps, low level programming, drivers, etc. This is the reason I am not sure if he should ever need to learn functional languages.

• The Properties dialog box not working for any Start Menu Program Lubuntu 14.04

  When Lubuntu 14.04 first came out, the Properties dialog was present for all Start Menu Programs but did not work when right-clicked on as nothing happened and no other box popped up the the Start Menu Program information, such as the executable info, etc. Then the issue was fixed. Now the issue has returned when I upgraded to Lubuntu 14.04.1. Is there any way to retrieve the Properties info pop-up box via a configuration file? Does the issue have to do with a faulty LXShortcut? I noticed when I uninstalled the LXShortcut the Properties tab disappeared. When I re-installed the Properties tab returned however once again when you right-click on the Properties tab nothing happens. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• Program/Wrapper (how do you call it) to automate a certain script

  In this question a script is provided, that minimizes all the other windows except the active one. But the thing is, to trigger this script a (shortcut) key-combination has to be pressed. I would love it, if it would be possible to automate this behavior, i.e. no matter what I do, only the active window is not minimized. This way I cannot view more then one open window at the same tine, which is what I'm after. Is it possible to write a script, that does this ? I a question I asked a while ago (where I learned about the above script), someone said, the proper way to do this, would be through a wrapper through which every program starts. I would also be very happy with a more sloppy solution, like activating this script 100 times per second (simulating pressing the shortcut combination a 100 times per second), if it is feasible - although I was warned, that that may not be a very good idea.

• How to program a cutting tool for 3D model in game

  I'm looking for a resource to figure out how to program a function to cut a 3d model in game. Example: Enemy/NPC is sliced into 2 pieces with a sword. His body is not hollow, you can see bloody texture where normally a 'polygon hole' would be. The first step is to actually 'cut/slice' the model, then add in polygons to fill the hole in the model. I know this can be done in 3D modelling software, but I'm not sure how to go about doing this in a game, code-wise. I do not wish to use 'pre cut-up" models, the code will determine where the cut is. Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

• Learning to program without a computer

  I have a friend in prison who wants to learn to program. He's got no access to a computer so I was wondering if people could recommend books that would be a good introduction to programming without requiring a computer. Obviously he's going to need to keep learning once he gets out and has access to a computer, but how should he get started now (he's got lots of free time to read). Based on his goals I think ruby or javascript/html5 might be good paths for him to start down, but really for now it's most important to explain the ideas. Even if it's all pseudocode. These need to be physical publications, paperbacks are preferred, and consider that he's got limited shelf space so large books could be a problem.

• Runescape - Ubuntu 12.04 - Jaggex cache folder

  does anyone here know how to hide the jaggexcache folder, jagexappletviewer file and jagex_cl_runescape_LIVE file from the home folder? The problem is this, everytime you play runescape (in both windows or linux), it creates those files and folders. The problem is that on windows, you can hide them and everything is fine. On linux, if you add ( /.) to the folder or file to hide it, when you play runescape, those files and folders are again created, because they cannot be found. As far as I know, the game is Java based (needs java iced tea plug in and java 7), so is there any way of changing the directory where the game puts all those files? like home/documents instead of just /home thanks!

• CreateDXGIFactory Doesn't Let Program Exit

  I'm using CreateDXGIFactory to get the graphics adapters and display modes. When I call it, it works fine and I get all the data. However, when I exit my program, the main Win32 thread exits, but something stays open because it keeps debugging. Does CreateDXGIFactory create an extra thread and I'm not closing it? I don't understand. The only thing I would suspect is that in the documentation it says it doesn't work if it's called from DllMain. It is in a DLL, but it's not called from DllMain. And it doesn't fail, either. I'm using DirectX 11.

• Can not export JARS in lwjgl!

  I did it before but for some reason it's doing the stupid problem again. I want to export as a regular Jar file, not a folder full of files. I export it like in Oskar Veerhoak. cmd says Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Resource not found: res/F lubberFlap.png at org.newdawn.slick.util.ResourceLoader.getResourceAsStream(ResourceLoa der.java:69) at com_FlubberSpace.MainFS.main(MainFS.java:118) I tested it out with my other project with the same code pretty much. This is how I load my Textures wood = TextureLoader.getTexture("PNG", ResourceLoader.getResourceAsStream("res/wood.png")); of course it works fine in eclipse but not after export. I havn't tried giving the previous game its' own project, I have it in a package. Can someone record how to export properly? I want a jar file that you just double click to start it. I also want it so nobody can extract the files and see my classes and res.

  I would like to put a program together to calculate the number of 60' pieces would be needed from a list of shorter pieces. For example, I sell rebar cut to length from our standard length of 60'-0". Now the length the customer requires are as follows: 343 pc @ 12.5' 35 pc @ 13' 10 pc @ 15' 63 pc @ 15.5'....... There are 56 total lengths ranging from 12.5' to 30.58' The idea is to limit the amount of waste from the 60' piece. The input from the user would be: number of differnt lengths Length of piece to cut from count of different lengths The result would be the number of prime pieces needed to fulfill the order. What well-known algorithms exist that could help me solve this problem?

What I'm going to do is create a Java parser to break up the Java code into operators, parameters etc to build XML representation.   I took a Game Design class a while ago that used Multimedia Fusion 2. Now I would like to get it on my computer, but I don't have the disk anymore. I have access to the program on my Dad's computer, but I want to get it on mine. Is there a way to get MMF2 for free on my computer? If not, are there any other free game design programs like MMF2 (knowing code is not necessary)?   Hello, I have a android webservice client application. I am trying to use the java standard WS library support. I have stripped the application down to the minimum, as shown below, to try and isolate the issue. I have taken this same application and created a standard java client application and it works fine -- of course with all of the android stuff taken out. What would be a good debug strategy? What methods and techniques would you recommend I try and isolate the problem? I am thinking that there is some sort of Dalvik VM incompatibility that is causing the TempConvert class not to load.   My signed Java applet has been running fine until Java update 19. Now some but not all of our users on Java Update 19 report a java security message stating that our applet contains both signed and unsigned code. The process for creating our applet is as follows: 1: Clean and Build the applet project in Netbeans IDE. 2: Open the Applet jar file in WinRAR and add the required mysql JDBC driver .class files to the jar file. 3: Sign the applet jar file. Can someone please tell me how to determine what code is signed and what code is not signed in our applet? Is there a better way to include the mysql JDBC driver jar file in our applet other than copying the jar file contents into our applet jar file? Thanks

  I've seen this question and this article on how to debug a native Java crash. The article is with respect to Windows. What are the equivalent debugging aids on Linux? Note: All I have is this crash log from a user in the field. I do not have access to the machine on which the crash occurred. Update: I am pretty sure the crash is due to JNI code we have. I never meant to imply that it was the JVM itself that was faulty. • Why not .NET-style delegates rather than closures in Java?

  OK, this is going to be my beating a dying horse for the 3rd time. However, this question is different from my earlier two about closures/delegates, which asks about plans for delegates and what are the projected specs and implementation for closures. This question is about - why is the Java community struggling to define 3 different types of closures when we could simply steal the whole concept of delegates lock, stock and barrel from our beloved and friendly neighbour - Microsoft. There are two non-technical conclusions I would be very tempted to jump into: The Java community should hold up its pride, at the cost of needing to go thro convoluted efforts, by not succumbing to borrowing any Microsoft concepts or otherwise vindicate Microsoft's brilliance. Delegates is a Microsoft patented technology. Alright, besides the above two possibilities, Q1. Is there any weakness or inadequacy in msft-styled delegates that the three (or more) forms of closures would be addressing? Q2. I am asking this while shifting between java and c# and it intrigues me that c# delegates does exactly what I needed. Are there features that would be implemented in closures that are not currently available in C# delegates? If so what are they because I cannot see what I need more than what C# delegates has adequately provided me? Q3. I know that one of the concerns about implementing closures/delegates in java is the reduction of orthogonality of the language, where more than one way is exposed to perform a particular task. Is it worth the level convolution and time spent to avoid delegates just to ensure java retains its level of orthogonality? In SQL, we know that it is advisable to break orthogonality by frequently adequately satisfying only the 2nd normal form. Why can't java be subjected to reduction of orthogonality and OO-ness for the sake of simplicity? Q4. The architecture of JVM is technically constrained from implementing .NET-styled delegates. If this reason WERE (subjunctive to emphasize unlikelihood) true, then why can't the three closures proposals be hidden behind a simple delegate keyword or annotation: if we don't like to use @delegate, we could use @method. I cannot see how delegate statement format is more complex than the three closure proposals.

• How do I add the Java Api Documentation to Eclipse?

  Hi I have downloaded Java API documentation from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html#docs and have supposedly attached it to Eclipse using the Window-Preferences-Java-Installed JREs-Edit-"Select rt.jar"-Javadoc Location AND the location has been accepted and "Validates" just fine. However, for the life of me, I can't get Eclipse to show the Javadocs in the tooltip whene I hover over an item (for example in the declaration of an ArrayList). I have also restarted Eclipse in attempts to get it to work what am I doing wrong? Thank you
