  • Where does a file copy to when I scp it?

    Hi forum, i have this file myfirst.txt located on a cluster of computers down the hall, i.e.: myname@login1:~> ls myfirst.txt which i want to download to the home directory: scp [email protected]:myfirst.txt . to which i get: myfirst.txt 100% 1828 1.8KB/s 00:00 now where (on my home computer) is this myfirst.txt file ? i can't find it. It's not visible when i click 'show hidden files' either. Tia,

  • Unable to download a file using drag&drop

    I've been downloading images from the Internet doing drag&drop while holding the Ctrl key. Using Google Chrome, and of course Nautilus, it used to work fine. But I recently had problems with packages and now every time I do that a warning menu appears showing this message: The specified location is not supported Probably I removed the packaged which allowed me to download content... can anybody help me? Note: Downloading doing right-click works, but I use more drag&drop.

  • Skype chat opens full screen and I can't get off it

    Skype was working perfect and then all of a sudden the chat box was full screen sized. Once you click on the Skype icon from the side bar it takes you straight to the full sized chat windows (By full sized I mean the side bar, top bar, and the programs close buttons disappear) I have uninstalled Skype and installed again but the issue is still occurring. I looked about but couldn't find an answer, thanks for any help!

  • Change color of Date and Weather app in Ubuntu 12.04 & Mate

    I have recentely installed Ubuntu 12.04 and as I am a truly Gnome 2 lover I also switched from Unity to Mate. The font color of the Weather/Date applet is barely visible so I was wondering how I can change it. I Already tried to explore all the options shown in the menu when I right-click on the applet, but apparently there's no such feature. So is there anything I could do in order to customize the font color in order to make the text more readable?

  • How to automatically resize the Dash when screen dimensions change?

    I use a convertible thinkpad (x201t) and magick-rotation to rotate the screen by 90 degrees in tablet mode. Therefore after rotation the screen's width is only 800 points (the ordinary resolution is 1200x800). The Dash does not adapt to this new state and therefore if I click on it, it is oversized and I cannot reach the applications/files/buttons on its side. Is there a way to tell the Dash that it should only ever use a width of 800 pixels, or any other solution to automatically adapt its size when rotating?

The most important things I want this series to answer is : What is it?  Why do I care? How do I do it? I hope that you enjoy this series. Let’s get started: Tip/Trick #11) What is it? Underline Text in a TextBlock. Why do I care? I’ve seen people do some crazy things to get underlined text in a Silverlight Application. In case you didn’t know there is a property for that. How do I do it: On a TextBlock you have a property called TextDecorations. You can easily set this property in XAML or CodeBehind with the following snippet: <UserControl x:Class="SilverlightApplication19.MainPage" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="300" d:DesignWidth="400"> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <TextBlock Name="txtTB" Text="MichaelCrump.NET" TextDecorations="Underline" /> </Grid> </UserControl> or you can do it in CodeBehind… txtTB.TextDecorations = TextDecorations.Underline;   Tip/Trick #12) What is it? Get the browser information from a Silverlight Application. Why do I care? This will allow you to program around certain browser conditions that otherwise may not be aware of. How do I do it: It is very easy to extract Browser Information out a Silverlight Application by using the BrowserInformation class. You can copy/paste this code snippet to have access to all of them. string strBrowserName = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.Name; string strBrowserMinorVersion = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.BrowserVersion.Minor.ToString(); string strIsCookiesEnabled = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.CookiesEnabled.ToString(); string strPlatform = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.Platform; string strProductName = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.ProductName; string strProductVersion = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.ProductVersion; string strUserAgent = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.UserAgent; string strBrowserVersion = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.BrowserVersion.ToString(); string strBrowserMajorVersion = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.BrowserVersion.Major.ToString(); Tip/Trick #13) What is it? Always check the minRuntimeVersion after creating a new Silverlight Application. Why do I care? Whenever you create a new Silverlight Application and host it inside of an ASP.net website you will notice Visual Studio generates some code for you as shown below. The minRuntimeVersion value is set by the SDK installed on your system. Be careful, if you are playing with beta’s like “Lightswitch” because you will have a higher version of the SDK installed. So when you create a new Silverlight 4 project and deploy it your customers they will get a prompt telling them they need to upgrade Silverlight. They also will not be able to upgrade to your version because its not released to the public yet. How do I do it: Open up the .aspx or .html file Visual Studio generated and look for the line below. Make sure it matches whatever version you are actually targeting. Tip/Trick #14) What is it? The VisualTreeHelper class provides useful methods for involving nodes in a visual tree. Why do I care? It’s nice to have the ability to “walk” a visual tree or to get the rendered elements of a ListBox. I have it very useful for debugging my Silverlight application. How do I do it: Many examples exist on the web, but say that you have a huge Silverlight application and want to find the parent object of a control.  In the code snippet below, we would get 3 MessageBoxes with (StackPanel first, Grid second and UserControl Third). This is a tiny application, but imagine how helpful this would be on a large project. <UserControl x:Class="SilverlightApplication18.MainPage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="300" d:DesignWidth="400"> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <StackPanel> <Button Content="Button" Height="23" Name="button1" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="75" Click="button1_Click" /> </StackPanel> </Grid> </UserControl> private void button1_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { DependencyObject obj = button1; while ((obj = VisualTreeHelper.GetParent(obj)) != null) { MessageBox.Show(obj.GetType().ToString()); } } Tip/Trick #15) What is it? Add ChildWindows to your Silverlight Application. Why do I care? ChildWindows are a great way to direct a user attention to a particular part of your application. This could be used when saving or entering data. How do I do it: Right click your Silverlight Application and click Add then New Item. Select Silverlight Child Window as shown below. Add an event and call the ChildWindow with the following snippet below: private void button1_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { ChildWindow1 cw = new ChildWindow1(); cw.Show(); } Your main application can still process information but this screen forces the user to select an action before proceeding.   • System Settings and Software Center does not pull up after fresh install 11.10 amd64

    I've had a few install rounds with ubuntu ever since 8.04 and has worked flawlessly every time. However, for some reason, when I try to click either System Settings or Software Center, the icon pulses as if it were working to come up but never does. The same goes for System Settings. I would expect that a password dialog would appear, but nothing shows. Is there bug with 11.10 that didn't exist with 11.04?

  • Window controls appearing on the right side after updating to 12.10 [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Window buttons stuck on right side After updating from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 the window controls(min, max, close) have started appearing on the right side when the window is not maximized, they again come on the left side when the window is maximized. I tried changing it using Ubuntu Tweak, but with no effect. Other suggestion I found was to change it using gconf-editor and changing apps - metacity - general click button_layout but there is no metacity in the apps section.

  • Capture a Query Executed By An Application Or User Against a SQL Server Database in Less Than a Minute

    At times a Database Administrator, or even a developer is required to wear a spy’s hat. This necessity oftentimes is dictated by a need to take a glimpse into a black-box application for reasons varying from a performance issue to an unauthorized access to data or resources, or as in my most recent case, a closed source custom application that was abandoned by a deserted contractor without source code. It may not be news or unknown to most IT people that SQL Server has always provided means of back-door access to everything connecting to its database. This indispensible tool is SQL Server Profiler. This “gem” is always quietly sitting in the Start – Programs – SQL Server <product version> – Performance Tools folder (yes, it is for performance analysis mostly, but not limited to) ready to help you! So, to the action, let’s start it up. Once ready click on the File – New Trace button, or using Ctrl-N with your keyboard. The standard connection dialog you have seen in SSMS comes up where you connect the standard way: One side note here, you will be able to connect only if your account belongs to the sysadmin or alter trace fixed server role. Upon a successful connection you must be able to see this initial dialog: At this stage I will give a hint: you will have a wide variety of predefined templates: But to shorten your time to results you would need to opt for using the TSQL_Grouped template. Now you need to set it up. In some cases, you will know the principal’s login name (account) that needs to be monitored in advance, and in some (like in mine), you will not. But it is VERY helpful to monitor just a particular account to minimize the amount of results returned. So if you know it you can already go to the Event Section tab, then click the Column Filters button which would bring a dialog below where you key in the account being monitored without any mask (or whildcard):  If you do not know the principal name then you will need to poke around and look around for things like a config file where (typically!) the connection string is fully exposed. That was the case in my situation, an application had an app.config (XML) file with the connection string in it not encrypted: This made my endeavor very easy. So after I entered the account to monitor I clicked on Run button and also started my black-box application. Voilà, in a under a minute of time I had the SQL statement captured:

  • Gnome panel is crashed i think conflict with the setting of fglrx driver

    recently i installed Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 11.10 and when I login in gnome in-spite of unity everything is okay but the panel is discolored. i thought its due to fglrx driver so i uninstall it but it doesn’t do any good. when i login through Gnome, it logged into Gnome Classic. Also when I click the application on the top left part of the desktop, the desktop is some what disturbed with the large icons. is there any ways to solve these???

  • Xubuntu: Screen idle-dims after lock+new login although not idling

    I set my screen to dim after 2 minutes idling on battery in XFCE power settings. If I lock and click new login, and log in as another user, the screen will dim after 2 minutes even though that second user is active. Is there some setting or workaround for this? It feels like a bug, but I have no idea what program or combination of programs would be responsible … (I don't know if this affects Unity users or not.)

    I added a FB Like button to my Wordpress template, and when I click Like, I receive an error, which pops up and says: There was an error liking the page. If you are the page owner, please try running your page through the linter on the Facebook devsite (https://developers.facebook.com/tools/lint/) and fixing any errors. The Lint Checker (now) gives no Error or Warnings, after I removed a duplicate og:description tag. Why is it not working?

  • Generate md5 and other checksums from properties menu (added "Digests" tab)

    I am trying to restore a function that I had on my last box. It added a tab in the properties menu of any file called "Digests". From there I could choose any/all of the hash formats, click hash and it would generate said checksums right there. What I am trying to find out is either the name of the package or acquire the location of it's installation. I have started a thread on UbuntuForums pertaining to this already

  • Unable to share a folder between Windows 7 and Ubuntu (running in VMWare)

    I have installed vmware toolbox in ubuntu (guest OS). I tried to share a location from the settings of the virtual machine. But when I click Ok, the following error in thrown in the host (Win 7) OS. "Unable to update run-time folder sharing status: Unknown error." The location is not showing up in /mnt/ What could be the reason? P.S I have vmhgfs process running in my Ubuntu VM. I was following this method.
