  • How does the hash part in hash maps work?

    - by sub
    So there is this nice picture in the hash maps article on Wikipedia: Everything clear so far, except for the hash function in the middle. How can a function generate the right index from any string? Are the indexes integers in reality too? If yes, how can the function output 1 for John Smith, 2 for Lisa Smith, etc.?

  • Regexp for handling recursive arguments

    - by Matt
    Hi all, I'm a regexp novice, so I'm wondering what the regexp for the following: function {function arg1, arg2}, arg3 I'm looking to be able to just select the top-level arguments: {function arg1, arg2} & arg3 Ideally the response would be using preg_match in PHP, but almost any regexp would work fine. Thanks! Matt

  • Error Handling for Application in PHP

    - by Zubair1
    I was wondering if someone can show me a good way to handle errors in my PHP app, that i am also easily able to reuse in my codes. So far i have been using the following functions: Inline Errors function display_errors_for($fieldname) { global $errors; if (isset($errors[$fieldname])) { return '<label for="' .$fieldname. '" class="error">' . ucfirst($errors[$fieldname]). '</label>'; } else { return false; } } All Errrors function display_all_errors($showCounter = true) { global $errors; $counter = 0; foreach ($errors as $errorFieldName => $errorText) { if ($showCounter == true) { $counter++; echo '<li>' . $counter . ' - <label for="' .$errorFieldName. '">' .$errorText. '</label></li>'; } else { echo '<li><label for="' .$errorFieldName. '">' .$errorText. '</label></li>'; } } } I have a $errors = array(); defined on the top of my global file, so it is appended to all files. The way i use it is that if i encounter an error, i push a new error key/value to the $errors array holder, something like the following: if (strlen($username) < 3) { $errors['username'] = "usernames cannot be less then 3 characters."; } This all works great and all, But i wondering if some one has a better approach for this? with classes? i don't think i want to use Exceptions with try/catch seems like an overkill to me. I'm planning to make a new app, and i'll be getting my hands wet with OOP alot, though i have already made apps using OOP but this time i'm planning to go even deeper and use OOP approach more extensively. What i have in mind is something like this, though its just a basic class i will add further detail to it as i go deeper and deeper in my app to see what it needs. class Errors { public $errors = array(); public function __construct() { // Initialize Default Values // Initialize Methods } public function __destruct() { //nothing here too... } public function add($errorField, $errorDesc) { if (!is_string($errorField)) return false; if (!is_string($errorDesc)) return false; $this->errors[$errorField] = $errorDesc; } public function display($errorsArray) { // code to iterate through the array and display all errors. } } Please share your thoughts, if this is a good way to make a reusable class to store and display errors for an entire app, or is getting more familiar with exceptions and try/catch my only choice?

  • Link User32 with gcc

    - by Tim Cooper
    I have a C program which has a function call that is defined in windows.h (which I have included), however, when I try and compile it with gcc, I get the error: warning: implicit declaration of function `LockWorkStation' I looked at the MSDN documentation and I see that this function is the User32 library file, and I was wondering how I would go about linking that to my file.

  • how to modify this jquery syntax

    - by Gandalf StormCrow
    Hi all, this example below works when hover event is trigered and when its not, its working for elements already in DOM, but when element created dynamically it doesn't work, I realize I need to use jQuery live() or delegate() for this, the thing is I tried to modify it and its not producing the results as expected, here is the working code : $(".sidebar li").hover( function(){ $(this).css("background-color", "#F9F4D0"); $(this).append($('<button class="promoter" type="button" title="Active promotion"></button>')); }, function(){ $(this).css("background-color", "#F9FAFA"); $(this).children("button").remove(); } ); Here is the bit when I wanted to add live but it's not producing correct results : $(".sidebar li").live('hover', function(){ $(this).css("background-color", "#F9F4D0"); $(this).append($('<button class="promoter" type="button" title="Active promotion"></button>')); }, function(){ $(this).css("background-color", "#F9FAFA"); $(this).children("button").remove(); } ); Where did I made mistake, thank you

  • How to use VBA to colour pie chart

    - by Timon Heinomann
    I have the following code in which the code tries to create a bubble chart with pie charts as the bubbles. As in this version colour themes are used to create a different colour in each pie chart (bulbble) in the function part I have the problem that it works depending on the paths to the colour paletts. Is there an easy way to make the function in a way that it works independently of those paths either by coding a colour for each pie chart segment or by using standardize paths (probably not possible, not preferable). Sub PieMarkers() Dim chtMarker As Chart Dim chtMain As Chart Dim intPoint As Integer Dim rngRow As Range Dim lngPointIndex As Long Dim thmColor As Long Dim myTheme As String Application.ScreenUpdating = False Set chtMarker = ActiveSheet.ChartObjects("chtMarker").Chart Set chtMain = ActiveSheet.ChartObjects("chtMain").Chart Set chtMain = ActiveSheet.ChartObjects("chtMain").Chart Set rngRow = Range(ThisWorkbook.Names("PieChartValues").RefersTo) For Each rngRow In Range("PieChartValues").Rows chtMarker.SeriesCollection(1).Values = rngRow ThisWorkbook.Theme.ThemeColorScheme.Load GetColorScheme(thmColor) chtMarker.Parent.CopyPicture xlScreen, xlPicture lngPointIndex = lngPointIndex + 1 chtMain.SeriesCollection(1).Points(lngPointIndex).Paste thmColor = thmColor + 1 Next lngPointIndex = 0 Application.ScreenUpdating = True End Sub Function GetColorScheme(i As Long) As String Const thmColor1 As String = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Document Themes 15\Theme Colors\Blue Green.xml" Const thmColor2 As String = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Document Themes 15\Theme Colors\Orange Red.xml" Select Case i Mod 2 Case 0 GetColorScheme = thmColor1 Case 1 GetColorScheme = thmColor2 End Select End Function The code copies a single chart again and again on the bubbles. So I woudl like to alter the Function (now called Get colourscheme) into a fucntion that assigns a a unqiue rgb colour to each segment of each pie chart

  • help me understand JS execution on onclick event of button

    - by Anil Namde
    <input type="button" name="reset" onclick="return ValidateValue(); __doPostBack('ApplyBtn','')" /> The above is the code generated for asp server button button control on browser. Now my query is that irrespective of ValidateValue() returning true/false __doPostBack('ApplyBtn','') function is not showing any effect for me. My understanding is that string passed to onclick acts like function body, and return will from first function will return control preventing second function from execution. Is that correct ? Please provide helpful inputs.

  • Flash Player scripting + IE8

    - by Joel Alejandro
    I've developed a small control bar for a Flash viewer generated by a third-party software. It has a First, Prev, Next & Last button, and a Zoom command. While Zoom works fine in all browsers, the navigation buttons seem to fail at Internet Explorer 8. I use at least two functions. This one locates the Flash object I want to manipulate: function getFlashMovieObject(movieName) { if (window.document[movieName]) { return window.document[movieName]; } if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft Internet")==-1) { if (document.embeds && document.embeds[movieName]) return document.embeds[movieName]; } else // if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft Internet")!=-1) { return document.getElementById(movieName); } } ...and any of these ones handles the frame navigation: var currentFrame = 0; function gotoFirst(id) { getFlashMovieObject(id + "Blueprints").Rewind(); currentFrame = 0; $("currentFrame").innerHTML = currentFrame + 1; $("frameTitle").innerHTML = frameTitles[id][currentFrame]; } function gotoPrev(id) { var movie = getFlashMovieObject(id + "Blueprints"); if (currentFrame 0) { currentFrame--; } movie.GotoFrame(currentFrame); $("currentFrame").innerHTML = currentFrame + 1; $("frameTitle").innerHTML = frameTitles[id][currentFrame]; } function gotoNext(id) { var movie = getFlashMovieObject(id + "Blueprints"); if (currentFrame < movie.TotalFrames() - 1) { currentFrame++; } movie.GotoFrame(currentFrame); $("currentFrame").innerHTML = currentFrame + 1; $("frameTitle").innerHTML = frameTitles[id][currentFrame]; } function gotoLast(id) { var movie = getFlashMovieObject(id + "Blueprints"); currentFrame = movie.TotalFrames() - 1; movie.GotoFrame(currentFrame); $("currentFrame").innerHTML = currentFrame + 1; $("frameTitle").innerHTML = frameTitles[id][currentFrame]; } Btw, that $ is MooTools, not jQuery. Anyway, IE dies on the movie.TotalFrames() call. What can I do to solve this? Keep in mind I need this to be done via JavaScript, as I cannot edit the SWF.

  • Chart for deciphering terms in different programming languages

    - by Nathan Adams
    This has been bugging me every since I started to use Python - in PHP you have this ability to use a string as a key in an array. PHP calls these associative arrays. Python calls these dictionaries. Does anyone know of a premade chart that will let me see what the different terminology is in different languages. For example: PHP             | Python Assosicative array | Dictionary

  • javascript: execute a bunch of asynchronous method with one callback

    - by Samuel Michelot
    I need to execute a bunch of asynchronous methods (client SQLite database), and call only one final callback. Of course, the ugly way is: execAll : function(callBack) { asynch1(function() { asynch2(function() { ... asynchN(function() { callBack(); }) }) }); } But I know there are better ways to do it. Intuitively I would detect when all call back has been called with a counter to call the final callback. I think this is a common design-pattern, so if someone could point me in the right direction... Thanks in advance !

    I need to design a function to return negative numbers unchanged but should add a + sign at the start of the number if its already no present. Example: Input Output ---------------- +1 +1 1 +1 -1 -1 It will get only numeric input. function formatNum($num) { # something here..perhaps a regex? } This function is going to be called several times in echo/print so the quicker the better.

  • jQuery.extend() not giving deep copy of object formed by constructor

    - by two7s_clash
    I'm trying to use this to clone a complicated Object. The object in question has a property that is an array of other Objects, and each of these have properties of different types, mostly primitives, but a couple further Objects and Arrays. For example, an ellipsed version of what I am trying to clone: var asset = new Assets(); function Assets() { this.values = []; this.sectionObj = Section; this.names = getNames; this.titles = getTitles; this.properties = getProperties; ... this.add = addAsset; function AssetObj(assetValues) { this.name = ""; this.title = ""; this.interface = ""; ... this.protected = false; this.standaloneProtected = true; ... this.chaptersFree = []; this.chaptersUnavailable = []; ... this.mediaOptions = { videoWidth: "", videoHeight: "", downloadMedia: true, downloadMediaExt: "zip" ... } this.chaptersAvailable = []; if (typeof assetValues == "undefined") { return; } for (var name in assetValues) { if (typeof assetValues[name] == "undefined") { this[name] = ""; } else { this[name] = assetValues[name]; } } ... function Asset() { return new AssetObj(); } ... function getProperties() { var propertiesArray = new Array(); for (var property in this.values[0]) { propertiesArray.push(property); } return propertiesArray; } ... function addAsset(assetValues) { var newValues; newValues = new AssetObj(assetValues); this.values.push(newValues); } } When I do var copiedAssets = $.extend(true, {}, assets); copiedAssets.values == [], while assets.values == [Object { name="section_intro", more...}, Object { name="select_textbook", more...}, Object { name="quiz", more...}, 11 more...] When I do var copiedAssets = $.extend( {}, assets); all copiedAssets.values.[X].properties are just pointers to the value in assets. What I want is a true deep copy all the way down. What am I missing? Do I need to write a custom extend function? If so, any recommended patterns?

  • jQuery autocomplete works with a local string but not when the same String is called off the server

  • fullcalendar events from REST-ful php server.

    - by biagidp
    I've written a very simple RESTful php server (my first experiment with REST, so feel free to make suggestions) to respond to the fullcalendar events callback. It produces exactly the same string output as the json-events.php file in the fullcalendar json example, but for some reason fullcalendar will not accept my server's output. I've tried messing with the headers because they're different from the ones produced by json-events.php, but I'm not really sure what's awry there, if anything. The code for the server is below: <?php class Listener{ function __construct() { $this->getResource(); $this->buildResponse(); } function getResource(){ $parts = explode('/', $_SERVER["REQUEST_URI"]); $script_name = end(explode('/', $_SERVER["SCRIPT_NAME"])); $this->resource = $parts[array_search($script_name, $parts) + 1]; $this->resource_id = $parts[array_search($script_name, $parts) + 2]; } function buildResponse(){ $method = strtolower($_SERVER["REQUEST_METHOD"]); $this->response_string = $method . ucwords($this->resource); } function getResponse(){ return $this->response_string; } } $listener = new Listener(); $thing = $listener->getResponse(); #$thing(); function getEvents(){ $year = date('Y'); $month = date('m'); echo json_encode(array( array( 'id' => 111, 'title' => "Event1", 'start' => "$year-$month-10", 'url' => "http://yahoo.com/" ), array( 'id' => 222, 'title' => "Event2", 'start' => "$year-$month-20", 'end' => "$year-$month-22", 'url' => "http://yahoo.com/" ) )); } ?> Any input, help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!   • Cannot set property X of undefined - programatically created element

    - by Dave
    I am working on a class to create a fairly complex custom element. I want to be able to define element attributes (mainly CSS) as I am creating the elements. I came up with the below function to quickly set attrs for me given an input array: // Sample array structure of apply_settings //var _button_div = { // syle : { // position: 'absolute', // padding : '2px', // right : 0, // top : 0 // } //}; function __apply_settings(__el,apply_settings){ try{ for(settingKey in apply_settings){ __setting = apply_settings[settingKey]; if(typeof(__setting)=='string'){ __el[settingKey] = __setting; }else{ for(i in __setting){ __el[settingKey][i] = apply_settings[settingKey][i]; } } } }catch(ex){ alert(ex + " " + __el); } } The function works fine except here: function __draw_top(){ var containerDiv = document.createElement('div'); var buttonDiv = document.createElement('div'); __apply_settings(containerDiv,this.settings.top_bar); if(global_settings.show_x) buttonDiv.appendChild(__create_img(global_settings.images.close)); containerDiv.appendChild(buttonDiv); __apply_settings(buttonDiv,this.settings.button_div); return containerDiv; } The specific section that is failing is __apply_settings(buttonDiv,this.settings.button_div); with the error "Cannot set property 'position' of undefined". So naturally, I am assuming that buttonDiv is undefined.. I put alert(ex + " " + __el); in __apply_settings() to verify what I was working with. Surprisingly enough, the element is a div. Is there any reason why this function would be working for containerDiv and not buttonDiv? Any help would be greatly appreciated :) {EDIT} http://jsfiddle.net/Us8Zw/2/

  • Mapping over sequence with a constant

    - by Hendekagon
    If I need to provide a constant value to a function which I am mapping to the items of a sequence, is there a better way than what I'm doing at present: (map my-function my-sequence (cycle [my-constant-value])) where my-constant-value is a constant in the sense that it's going to be the same for the mappings over my-sequence, although it may be itself a result of some function further out. I get the feeling that later I'll look at what I'm asking here and think it's a silly question because if I structured my code differently it wouldn't be a problem, but well there it is!

  • Can I find out the return value before returning while debugging in Visual Studio

    - by doekman
    Take the following function: DataTable go() { return someTableAdapter.getSomeData(); } When I set a breakpoint in this function, is there a possibility to inspect the returned value? The "go" function is directly coupled to a datagrid in an aspx page. The only way to inspect the returned datatable, is to use a temporary variable... However, that's a bit inconvenient. Isn't there another way?
