  Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Change the white background in webpages to another color

  I'm currently using a dark theme in firefox. It looks really nice, but many webpages use a plain white background. The resulting contrast is a little unpleasant and sometimes hurts the eye when I switch from a dark tab to a white tab. Is there a way to make firefox replace white backgrouns everywhere with some other color (light gray, for instance)? It could be a Stylish script, a userChrome.css hack, or anything that works (preferably as light as possible). To make myself clear: after I achieve my objective, the background color whenever I visit the super-user site should be light-grey instead of white, and the same should happen to any other site with a white background (google sites, tech crunch, etc). Is there a way to do that?

  Guys and Gals, I've been tasked with a doozy of an assignment. The objective is something akin to "laying of hands" on several database servers which work in concert to provide data to various Web, Client-Server and Tablet-Sync'd distributed Client-Server programs. More specifically, I've been asked to come up with a "Maintenance Plan" which includes recommendations for future work to improve these machines' performance/reliability/security/etc. Might there be some good articles on teh interwebs ya'll could point me towards which would give me some good basis to start? Articles describing "These are the top 4 overarching categories and this is how you should proceed when drilling down on each of them" sort-of-thing would be fabulous. The Databases are all SQL 2005, however the compatibility level is 80 and they were originally created with ERwin based on SQL 6.5. The OSs are all Windows Server 2003. Thanks all! Tim

• Likeliness of obtaining same IP address after restarting a router

  My actual objective is to simulate logged IPs of web-site users who are all assumed to use dynamically assigned IPs. There will be two kinds of users: good users who only change IP when the ISP assignes a new one bad users who will restart their router to obtain a new IP So what I would like to understand is what assignment mechanics are usually at work here deciding from what pool of IPs one is chosen and whether the probability is uniformly distributed. I know there is no definite and global answer as this process can be adjusted be the ISP but maybe there is something like a technological frame and common process that allows some plausible assumptions. UPDATE: A bad user will restart the router as often as possible if necessary. So here the central question is how many IP changes on average are necessary to end up with a previously used IP.

• Feedback on available mid-to-enterprise level desktop backup solutions [closed]

  I am involved in the creation of a new backup solution to replace our current Retrospect setup, which has become a significant time sink to administer. We have almost 200 desktop and some laptop clients, both Windows and OS X. We're only interested in products oriented around disk-to-disk, and would be integrate well with our current set of nine NAS devices as target storage. I'd just like some feedback from anyone out there, as it's sometimes difficult otherwise to find objective reviews of software at this level. Both data and time are important enough that we need a reliable solution which won't be prone to self-destruction as often as Retrospect. Bonus points for de-duplication, which might help squeeze more service time out of our NAS setup in terms of capacity. Currently considering Commvault and Netbackup. Many other products I've seen don't have an OSX client. Any thoughts?

I assume that i don't understand how submitting/writing a message(from user to gmail servers) works, in order to be sent later to the other email address. • Recommend a Rackspace Cloud Server API Language Binding?

  Rackspace publishes only a hard-to-use HTTP and JSON/XML based "API" (they call it an API but it's really a non-standard Web Service without a WSDL). There are dozens of open-source language bindings to choose from. I have tried three of them so far and they're all horrible (incomplete, buggy, and/or undocumented). Can anybody recommend a language binding which is reasonably complete, well documented, and bug-free? I can use Perl, Python, PHP, or Java. My ultimate objective is to create a script/program that will provision a server, launch a process inside it, wait for the process to finish, copy the results to the local server, and destroy the remote server. What's the best choice for that? Thanks

The objective is simply to sync a user directory between two computers. The contents of the user directory could amount to a large quantity of data—say, a quantity larger than could be stored on any single USB drive—but the aggregate size of changes that must be propagated by a single sync could easily fit on a USB drive. As an example, suppose a user directory is already synchronized between a desktop and a laptop computer. Here's a use case: Some changes are made in the user directory on the desktop. We mount a USB drive onto the desktop and copy whatever changes need to be applied to the laptop user directory in order to synchronize the desktop and laptop user directories. • Fastest booting Linux ditribution on a live-cd

  I'm looking for a linux distro with the following: Boots quickly, as fast as possible. Has expected tools such as file browser, a web browser, etc. Doesn't need to have extraneous recovery stuff such as partition editors, and what not. These are the tools I have and use already: ophcrack Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (UBCD4Win) chntpw (Offline NT Password and Registry Editor) Hiren's BootCD gparted or Parted Magic Ubuntu nubuntu Any and all suggestions are welcome :-) The primary objective is to get a quick booting linux distro that I can grab / delete / move / copy files with. Currently, I prefer using ophcrack, it boots in (relatively) fast and I can manipulate files well. The one that takes the longest is ubuntu of course.

I will tell you exactly what I have done to create the task, please tell me if I am doing anything wrong. My objective is to have my task (console app) run every 30 minutes. I open control panel, scheduled tasks, add new scheduled task Browse for my application I want to run, a console app without any command line arguments I select, perform this task - Daily I select the start time (now 8:00 in the morning) Start date set to today Set the correct username + password Open advanced properties Repeat the task every 30 minutes for 24 hours Save and close. • For very beginning startup: home server or EC2?

  The micro instance of Amazon EC2 only has ram of 613MB, my laptop got 8GB. And I suppose likewise the processing power of my computer would be better than the micro instance. My question is, what are the considerations in deciding to host yourself or on Amazon EC2, especially for a really baby startup? For example, would network speed be a problem? My computer broadband network is 100Mbs up to 1Gbs. What would Amazon compare to this? My site at these moment would just host some images and perform some php requests. I would probably also use cloudflare but seems it increases the dns lookup time considerably... And of course the overall objective is to make the best user experience.

  I tried to partition my primary hard disk (NTFS partitions) with qtparted and got stuck in the process. Consequently I had to kill the process and exit my knoppix live CD boot up. Even though I was expecting XP to get corrupted, it booted fine and showed up all the drives accessible. But when I opened this with partition manager 8, it shows up as “BAD”. I ran chkdsk /f without any success. My objective with qparted and partition magic was to resize my existing partitions and add some space to c: How do I fix this problem and resize my partitions? • Summer Programming Plans

  I've wanted to start "hacking" for many months now. But I put it off in favor of school and other things. Now, though, I'm free for the summer and want to learn as much as I can. I have a rough idea of what I want to try my hand at, but need some guidance as to what specifically - and how - I should learn. This is my plan so far: 1) Get good at programming in general. I plan to read up on how to think/work like a programmer. I'm waiting for the Pragmatic Programmer to arrive, which will be the first book I read. Q: What other books/ebooks should I look at? What more can I do here? 2) Learn/Improve at HTML/CSS. My first project will be to make a personal website/blog for myself using HTML and CSS. ----Then I hope to write/design articles like Dustin Curtis. After I finish this (and learn a programming language) I'll try to create user-based a user-focused website. Q: It's my understanding that just trying to design/manage websites is a good way to learn/improve at HTML/CSS. Is that all correct? 3) Try music development. This might be a sort of stretch for stackoverflow, but I'm interested in mixing/making techno songs. (Think Justice, or Daft Punk, or MSTRKRFT.) Q: I have a Mac. Any ideas on how I could start/learn music making? Any programs I should download, for instance? 4) My main goal: Learning a web development language/framework. I'm a year into learning/using C++. But what I really want to do is develop websites and web apps. I've searched online, and there seems to be great debate over which language/framework to learn first (and which is best). I think I've narrowed it down to three: Ruby (Rails), Python (Django), and PHP (?). Q #1: Which should I learn and use first? (Reasons?) Q #2: One reason I was leaning towards PHP is that I'm taking a PHP development course next semester. Learning it now would make that course easy. If PHP was not the answer to Q #1, is it worth learning both? Or, would it be better to just focus on PHP for this summer and next semester, and then transition thereafter to a better language? 5) iPhone/iPad Programming (Maybe). I've a number of simple, useful app ideas that I'd like to eventually get too. I just bought a Mac, as well as a few app development books. Q #1: Am I spreading myself thin trying to learn all of the above, and objective-C? Q #2: How much harder/easier is objective-C compared to the above languages? Also, how easy is it to learn obj-C after learning a web development language (and some C++)? Q #3: Yes or no? Should I go for it, or just keeep with #1-4 for now? Also: If you have any tips on how I should learn (or how you learned to hack), I'm all ears. I'd be especially interested in how you planned out learning: did you just hack whenever you felt like it, or did you "study" the language a few hours a day, or something else? Thanks so much, guys.

• What is "elegant" code?

  I see a lot of lip service and talk about the most "elegant" way to do this or that. I think if you spend enough time programming you begin to obtain a sort of intuitive feel for what it is we call "elegance". But I'm curious. Even if we can look at a bit of code, and say instinctively "That's elegant", or "That's messy", I wonder if any of us really understands what that means. Is there a precise definition for this "elegance" we keep referring to? If there is, what is it? Now, what I mean by a precise definition, is a series of statements which can be used to derive questions about a peice of code, or a program as a whole, and determine objectively, or as objectively as possible, whether that code is "elegant" or not. May I assert, that perhaps no such definition exists, and it's all just personal preference. In this case, I ask you a slightly different question: Is there a better word for "elegance", or a better set of attributes to use for judging code quality that is perhaps more objective than merely appealing to individual intuition and taste? Perhaps code quality is a matter of taste, and the answer to both of my questions is "no". But I can't help but feel that we could be doing better than just expressing wishy washy feelings about our code quality. For example, user interface design is something that to a broad range of people looks for all the world like a field of study that oughtta be 100% subjective matter of taste. But this is shockingly and brutally not the case, and there are in fact many objective measures that can be applied to a user interface to determine its quality. A series of tests could be written to give a definitive and repeatable score to user interface quality. (See GOMS, for instance). Now, okay. is Elegance simply "code quality" or is it something more? Is it something that can be measured? Or is it a matter of taste? Does our profession have room for taste? Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions altogether. Help me out here. Bonus Round If there is such a thing as elegance in code, and that concept is useful, do you think that justifies classifying the field of programming as an "Art" capital A, or merely a "craft". Or is it just an engineering field populated by a bunch of wishful thinking humans? Consider this question in the light of your thoughts about the elegance question. Please note that there is a distinction between code which is considered "art" in itself, and code that was written merely in the service of creating an artful program. When I ask this question, I ask if the code itself justifies calling programming an art. • Why do programmers use or recommend Mac OS X?

  I've worked on both Mac and Windows for awhile. However, I'm still having a hard time understanding why programmers enthusiastically choose Mac OS X over Windows and Linux? I know that there are programmers who prefer Windows and Linux, but I'm asking the programmers who would just use Mac OS X and nothing else, because they think Mac OS X is the greatest fit for programmers. Some might argue that Mac OS X got the beautiful UI and is nix based, but Linux can do that. Although Windows is not nix based, you can pretty much develop on any platform or language, except Cocoa/Objective-C. Is it the softwares that offer only on Mac OS X? Does that really worth using Mac? Is it to develop iPhone apps? Is it because you need to buy new Windows every 2 years (less backwards compatible)? I understand why people, who are working in multimedia/entertainment industry, would use Mac OS X; however, I don't have strong merits of Mac OS X over Windows. If you develop daily on Mac and prefer Mac over anything else, can you give me a merit that Mac has over Windows/Linux? Maybe something you can do on Mac that cannot be done in Windows/Linux with the same level of ease? I'm not trying to do another Mac vs. Windows here. I tried to find things that I do on Mac that cannot be done on Windows with the same level of ease, but I couldn't. So, I'm asking for some help.

• Managing multiple reverse proxies for one virtual host in apache2

  I have many reverse proxies defined for my js-host VirtualHost, like so: /etc/apache2/sites-available/js-host <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName js-host.example.com [...] ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyPass /serviceA http://192.168.100.50/ ProxyPassReverse /serviceA http://192.168.100.50/ ProxyPass /serviceB http://192.168.100.51/ ProxyPassReverse /serviceB http://192.168.100.51/ [...] ProxyPass /serviceZ http://192.168.100.75/ ProxyPassReverse /serviceZ http://192.168.100.75/ </VirtualHost> The js-host site is acting as shared config for all of the reverse proxies. This works, but managing the proxies involves edits to the shared config, and an apache2 restart. Is there a way to manage individual proxies with a2ensite and a2dissite (or a better alternative)? My main objective is to isolate each proxy config as a separate file, and manage it via commands. First Attempt I tried making separate files with their own VirtualHost entries for each service: /etc/apache2/sites-available/js-host-serviceA <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName js-host.example.com [...] ProxyPass /serviceA http://192.168.100.50/ ProxyPassReverse /serviceA http://192.168.100.50/ </VirtualHost> /etc/apache2/sites-available/js-host-serviceB <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName js-host.example.com [...] ProxyPass /serviceB http://192.168.100.51/ ProxyPassReverse /serviceB http://192.168.100.51/ </VirtualHost> The problem with this is apache2 loads the first VirtualHost for a particular ServerName, and ignores the rest. They aren't "merged" somehow as I'd hoped.

• Why do programmers use or recommend Mac OS X? [closed]

  I've worked on both Mac and Windows for awhile. However, I'm still having a hard time understanding why programmers enthusiastically choose Mac OS X over Windows and Linux? I know that there are programmers who prefer Windows and Linux, but I'm asking the programmers who would just use Mac OS X and nothing else, because they think Mac OS X is the greatest fit for programmers. Some might argue that Mac OS X got the beautiful UI and is nix based, but Linux can do that. Although Windows is not nix based, you can pretty much develop on any platform or language, except Cocoa/Objective-C. Is it the softwares that offer only on Mac OS X? Does that really worth using Mac? Is it to develop iPhone apps? Is it because you need to buy new Windows every 2 years (less backwards compatible)? I understand why people, who are working in multimedia/entertainment industry, would use Mac OS X; however, I don't have strong merits of Mac OS X over Windows. If you develop daily on Mac and prefer Mac over anything else, can you give me a merit that Mac has over Windows/Linux? Maybe something you can do on Mac that cannot be done in Windows/Linux with the same level of ease? I'm not trying to do another Mac vs. Windows here. I tried to find things that I do on Mac that cannot be done on Windows with the same level of ease, but I couldn't. So, I'm asking for some help.
