  I have an application to install on Windows Server 2008, which is not natively supported by the installer. The application installer permits installation on Windows Vista(or XP, or 7). I do not want to use compatibility mode; even if I did it doesn't work. So, how can I spoof the installer to believe it is Windows Vista(or XP, or 7) so that it can proceed with the installation? Notes: This is an experimental machine, so I am not concerned about stability of the host or the application.

  Hello, I'm using Kubuntu9.10 and Mozilla Thunderbird as email program. If email has an attachment, MT rarely finds required application to open it in. If i save an attachment and then open it from Dolphin, it works fine. But if i try opening it right from download dialog, MT can't determine appropriate application correctly. I'd prefer it to use xdg-open or kde-open programs for finding required application. Is there a way to make Thunderbird a bit smarter? thank you.

  From the official Microsoft docs: Detecting the Idle State The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle. In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute. Is there any way to change the time to less than 15 minutes minutes? Am I assuming this hard-coded and impossible? My Google-fu has eluded me so far and I found nothing, but wanted to check here before giving up.

• IP Phone over VPN - one way calls unless default route?

  I have come across a strange problem with our VPN and BCM 50 (Nortel/Avaya) phone system. As you can tell by my other questions I have been doing some work on setting a VPN up from one location to another and it's all working well. With one exception. We have an IP phone that is connected at the remote location, straight to a router which has a VPN tunnel to our main practice. The phone works mostly, but every few calls it turns into a one way call. As in, the caller (from the remote phone) can't hear the receiver- but the receiver can hear the caller. This is fixed by setting the VPN tunnel to be the default route for all traffic. The problem with fixing it that way is that all traffic then goes through the tunnel which slows internet access etc. down considerably. The router is set to send the following over the VPN: 192.168.1.0/24 192.168.2.0/24 192.168.4.0/24 The IP of the remote location is: 192.168.3.0/24 The remote router (where the phone is) is a Draytek 2830n, and the local router (at the main practice) is a Draytek 2820. We are using an IPSec tunnel with AES encryption <- as a result of a previous answer pointing to the incompatibility in the hardware encryption. Any advice would be appreciated!

But when i tested it, i dont get the path of the file requested to open using the application, instead i got the "psn_0_151589". I checked it for itunes, textedit, xcode and other applications.   How do I set Windows 7's Recycle Bin to automatically have a default disk space allocation for deleted files from external hard drives and TrueCrypt-mounted volumes? I remember in Windows XP, I can set a percentage of total disk space that will automatically be used as storage capacity for deleted files by the Recycle Bin, and this will be applied to all external HDs or TC-mounted volumes. Windows 7 defaults to the 'Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted' setting for newly mounted external HDs and TC mounted volumes. Since I am expecting deleted files to go to the Recycle Bin, sometimes this causes an 'Oops' when I delete files in external hard drives or TC mounted volumes, as Windows does not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin, but just deletes the files permanently. I have to remember to manually set a custom Recycle Bin storage space for each new drive that is mounted by Windows to avoid this issue. I only use and mount TrueCrypt file containers, not drives. I also don't mount TrueCrypt file containers as removable drives. ('Mount volume as removable medium' is unchecked in Mount Options.) In my $Recycle.Bin > Properties > Security settings, 'System' and 'Administrators' are already set to 'Full Control', while 'Users' only have 'Special Permissions' checked in gray. There are no other groups. I haven't changed or edited anything in these settings. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate.

  I have a PowerShell script that deploys about 12 web parts. They have all been created through Visual Studio 2010 and are being deployed to SharePoint 2010. I am getting the following error when running Install-SPSolution for one of my web parts: Install-SPSolution : This solution contains no resources scoped for a Web application and cannot be deployed to a particular Web application. Can someone help me debug this? Every other Install-SPSolution command uses -AllWebApplications, and I do not want to specify the web application directly using -URL.   When I double-click on a CSV file on a network share, the file is opened in Microsoft Excel (which is what I want). However, Excel assumes that I'm going to modify the file, and that everyone else is too, and so puts a lock on it. In practice I very rarely actually want to modify these files, merely read from them. And if I have the file open in an Excel window in the background, it stops anyone else from opening the same file. I am aware that I can manually open a file as read-only from the File - Open dialog within Excel. However I almost always open files by double-clicking on them in Explorer (or Outlook, for attachments). Is it possible to change the file association so that the default handler for CSV files is "Excel in read-only mode"? Is there a command-line argument that I can use in the Open With... dialog to achieve this? Or more bluntly - when I am looking at a CSV file in Windows Explorer, is there an easier way to open it read-only than starting up Excel myself, selecting File - Open, choosing "read only" from the dropdown, manually navigating to the same folder in the hierarchy, and then opening the file? (I am happy to have to jump through hoops on the rare occasions that I want to modify and save a file.)

  Whenever I "double click" on an Excel file and another Excel file is open, the newly opened file automatically opens in the same application window as the previously opened Excel file. This isn't limited to just Excel, as I've seen Word do this as well. This poses a problem when wanting to compare documents side by side. The current solution I have for this is to actually open another Excel or Word instance, and then open the file from within that application window itself. Is there a way to force Office to open a new instance of the application when double clicking on the file icons? I'm currently using Office 2007 and Windows XP but I've seen this on Office 2010 and Windows Vista and 7. I'm looking for an overall solution if possible.

We place it at %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\OurProgram*.* We now encounter a few cases in larger companies, where users do not have write permission to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%. Most of these cases are running Windows 7. The problem does not occur on a normal desktop installation of Windows 7 though. What is the recommended policy for this location? With Outlook 2010, the only way is to use those stored into C:\Documents and Setting\UserName\Local Settings\Application Datas\Microsoft\Signature\ I'd like to point the signatures to a network share. Allowing us to modify the signatures into the share, instead of login on every computers each time we are asked to modify them (and this is quite often because the signatures contain logos about current events).   In hkey_local_machine/software/classes I found some registry keys named msime.taiwan, msime.japan and a couple others with similar names, except with a number at the end of, so there was 4 keys altogether. From what I know itmcoulc be associated with a thing in windows that lets you write japanese characters or whatever. I also found a macaffee page, , which seemed dated but it said the key is created by a virus named w32 virut. Just wondering is this a legit key?   I'm running a script in the background which loads an image with feh depending on which application is currently in focus. However, whenever the script opens the image, window focus is lost to feh. I was able to circumvent this by using xdotool to switch back to the application that was originally in focus, but this introduces a short annoying period of time where the focus is switched from feh to the application. My question is this: is there any way to launch feh in the background such that window focus is NOT lost? System: Fedora 17, Gnome 3, Bash Thanks a ton!

  I have several servers to test new code on. I primarily push out asp.NET web applications. Last week, I had an issue where I installed a newly developed web application on three servers. The three servers all run in separate environments. The application worked fine on two of them, but consistently crashed on the third server with each web request. The problem was eventually traced to an in-house developed .dll file being out of date on the third server. I'm certain that this kind of thing happens all the time. However, there are numerous things that could go wrong to cause this kind of behavior. I spent quite a bit of time tracing this problem. I would like to make a list of things to be suspicious of next time this happens. I have used the gcInterval JVM arg in the past on earlier versions of ColdFusion with success, but I have confirmed with verbose GC logs that Full GCs are still happening on the hour (Unless the Old Gen gets so full that it forces a full collection). What I imagine is: Traffic to http://myserevr.com/app is redirected to https://myserver.com/app Traffic to https://myserver.com/app is proxied to the application server. My SSL certificate is only installed on the Apache server, not on the Application server Other traffic to the Apache server (http://myserver.com/anotherapp) is served directly from the Apache server What's the best setup to achieve this? • Where to store global enterprise properties?

  I'm faced with a crowd of java applications, which need different global enterprise wide properties for operation, for example: hostname of the central RDBMS, hostname and location of the central self-service portal, host location of central LDAP, host location of central mail server etc. Formally we build each application with a properties file, where all this properties are definied. But that's a very bad solution, because if the hostname of the mail server changes, we need to change the properties files for each application and deploy all applications again. Our idea is to centralize this properties, so that each application can ask for each property at runtime, for example: Idea: Put the properties file to an easy accessible file share. So if we need to change a property, each application uses the new properties. Idea: Put the properties to database. Main disadvantage: we need a dependency to database client libraries for each application. Idea: Put all applications into one big application server, that provides system properties for each application. Main disadvantage: needs deployment of each application to one application server. But that isn't a realistic scenario. Idea: Webservice that provides global enterprise wide properties. Main disadvantage: not very secure, because some properties are passwords or user credentials. What other alternatives are recommended? What is state of the art?
