  • Best strategy for supporting multiple server communication from iPhone/android app?

    - by tipycalFlow
I'm making an app that will be used in multiple hospitals in the US. As per HIPAA compliance requirement, every hospital will have its own server that complies with these requirements of ensuring patient data security, etc. Now the task is that the app should communicate with a particular server based on the login info. An additional requirement is that new hospitals(servers) are likely to be added along the way, even after the app is available on the market. So basically, according to some login credentials, the app should communicate with the server of the hospital assigned to that person. One pretty crude way is to set up our own server which links the hospitals with the login info and accordingly, provides a base-url for data exchange. Is there a more efficient way to handle this?

    - by pksahani
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit-i386) in my desktop PC. I need g77 compiler for some specific applications. The app can only be installed after having g77 compiler. This specific app is designed based on g77 fortran compiler and can't be used with gfortran which is the standard available compiler in 12.04 LTS. And guide me the procedure to install g77 in 12.04. I have been trying apt-get update & apt-get install g77 after changing the sources.list file. After processing I am able to install g77 but when i try to compile a fortran program, it shows error /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crt1.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crti.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Please help me. • Which is the best non-java, dynamic, programming language to build attractive GUIs?

    - by VeeKay
I am well acquainted with java and groovy but somehow I am not intrigued by the performance or looks of swing based applications that are developed on the same. So I want to learn and know about THE best alternate dynamic programming language (coz I am looking for little bit of luxury while writing code by not willing to fiddle with pointers, memory handling, static typing difficulties etc) to develop attractive cross platform GUIs. To be precise, when I say attractive I mean support for elegant translucent windows and nicer components (not the flashy adobe stuff). Can you please suggest me a programming language that manages to fit into this?

  • How many VBOs should I use and should I keep a copy of their data?

    - by CSharpie
Firstofall, I am sorry if my question is to broad. I am developing a tile based game and switched from those gl.Begin calls to using VBOs. This is kind of working allready, I managed to render a hexagonal polygon with a simple shader applied. What I am not sure is, how to implement the "whole" tile concept. Concrete the questions are: Is it better to create 1 VBO for a single tile and render it n-Times in every different position, or render one huge VBO that represents the whole "world" Depending on the answer above, what is the best way to draw a "linegrid". Overlay with the same vbo using the respecting polygon.mode , or is there a way to let the shader to this? How would frustum-culling or mousepicking work then, do i need to keep the VBO-data in memory?

  • Django - how should I implement generic apps that have dependencies on other generic apps?

    - by MikeRand
Hi all, I'm using Marty Alchin's Django app that creates historical records (add, change, delete) based on models found in other Django apps (found in chapter 11 of Pro Django). Question: how do I implement this historical_records app into my other generic Django apps while still maintaining loose coupling? For example, I have a generic app (forecast) that manages a Forecast (of any other model). For one project, I'd like to use historical_records so that I can track changes to a Forecast instance. But I don't want to require all future projects that might want to use forecast to also use historical_records. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

  • Where can I find resources for RPG Character Sprites? [closed]

    - by IcySnow
I'm developing a turn-based 2D RPG game. Everything's going fine except the lack of characters' sprites such as moving, attacking animation, etc.... By characters I mean both human-like and monster-like creatures. Is there a website providing sprites for free? Or a program (free or paid, whichever is fine) which will let me create sprites from scratch and automatically generate the images? I tried my best to search for one but the best I've managed to find so far is http://spriters-resource.com/. However, is there something else similar and better out there?

    - by Vincent Maverick Durano
Few months ago I blogged about the release of NDepend v3 Continuous Integration and Reporting Capabilities here. • C# Timers for game development

    - by Valentin
Hi, all! I want to find out the best way of creating time based events in games. Lets talk for example about Texas Holdem Poker. Server can handle thousands of tables and in every table we have timers: turn timer, hold seat timer and so on. What is the best way of timers realization for this purpose? Is System.Timers.Timer class can handle this or it will be more reasonable to create a separate thread with sorted time queue (for example an ascending sorted list with int values which represent time in ms remained)? Thanks in advance, Valentin

  • Java chunk negative number problem

    - by user1990950
    I've got a tile based map, which is divided in chunks. I got a method, which puts tiles in this map and with positive numbers it's working. But when using negative numbers it wont work. This is my setTile method: public static void setTile(int x, int y, Tile tile) { int chunkX = x / Chunk.CHUNK_SIZE, chunkY = y / Chunk.CHUNK_SIZE; IntPair intPair = new IntPair(chunkX, chunkY); world.put(intPair, new Chunk(chunkX, chunkY)); world.get(intPair).setTile(x - chunkX * Chunk.CHUNK_SIZE, y - chunkY * Chunk.CHUNK_SIZE, tile); } This is the setTile method in the chunk class (CHUNK_SIZE is a constant with the value 64): public void setTile(int x, int y, Tile t) { if (x >= 0 && x < CHUNK_SIZE && y >= 0 && y < CHUNK_SIZE) tiles[x][y] = t; } What's wrong with my code?

  • ALL, ALLEXCEPT and VALUES in DAX

    - by Marco Russo (SQLBI)
When you use CALCULATE in DAX you are creating a new filter context for the calculation, based on the existing one. There are a few functions that are used to clear or preserve a column filter. These functions are: ALL – it can be used with one or more columns from a table, or with the name of a table. It returns all the values from the column(s) or all the rows from the table, ignoring any existing filter context. In other words, ALL clear an existing filter context on columns or table. We can use...(read more)

  • Google Analytics - bad experiences? (esp. adult content)

    - by Litso
I work for a rather large adult website, and we're currently not using Google Analytics. There is an internal debate going on about whether we should start using Analytics, but there is hestitation from certain parties. The main argument is that they fear that Google will get too much insight into our website, and might even block us from the index as a result based on our adult content. Has anyone here ever had such an experience, or know stories about bad experiences with Google Analytics in such a manner? I personally think it will only improve our website if we were able to use Analytics, but the dev team was asked to look into possible negative effects. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to get distance from point to line with distinction between side of line?

    - by tesselode
I'm making a 2d racing game. I'm taking the nice standard approach of having a set of points defining the center of the track and detecting whether the car is off the track by detecting its distance from the nearest point. The nicest way I've found of doing this is using the formula: d = |Am + Bn + C| / sqrt(A^2 + B^2) Unfortunately, to have proper collision resolution, I need to know which side of the line the car is hitting, but I can't do that with this formula because it only returns positive numbers. So my question is: is there a formula that will give me positive or negative numbers based on which side of the line the point is on? Can I just get rid of the absolute value in the formula or do I need to do something else?

  • How to improve quality of software

    - by hariharan
Last week in our organization, we triggered a topic related to different ways of improving the quality of software (both technical as well as functional related topics). Since i am a technical person, i suggested following ideas, Use case based detailed design document – Both technical as well as functional specification should be well organized according to use case requirement. Design patterns – Will help developers to adopt common approach irrespective of technologies. Analyze and implement new technologies – Helps to improve the performance as well as the security of the application. As I am not a well experienced technical candidate , i am unable to provide other solutions. If any suggestions or topics related to this (including testing, functional requirement), please post your valuable comments.

If you didn't read the original article, please take some minutes (5 to 10 maximum) to gain a better understanding on the following. Thanks. I'm going to describe my steps using a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running on Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS - version 4.0.4) but I would assume that any other Android-based device will show more or less the same results. • Why is Prolog associated with Natural Language Processing?

    - by kyphos
I have recently started learning about NLP with python, and NLP seems to be based mostly on statistics/machine-learning. What does a logic programming language bring to the table with respect to NLP? Is the declarative nature of prolog used to define grammars? Is it used to define associations between words? That is, somehow mine logical relationships between words (this I imagine would be pretty hard to do)? Any examples of what prolog uniquely brings to NLP would be highly appreciated.

  • Non-mathematical Project Euler (or similar)?

    - by Juha Untinen
I checked the post (Where can I find programming puzzles and challenges?) where there's a lot of programming challenges and such, but after checking several of them, they all seem to be about algorithms and mathematics. Is there a similar site for purely logic/functionality-based challenges? For example: - Retrieve data using a web service - Generate output X from a CSV file - Protect this code against SQL injection - Make this code more secure - What is wrong with this code (where the error is in logic, not syntax) - Make this loop more efficient Does a challenge site like that exist? Especially one that provides hints and/or correct solutions. That would be a very helpful learning site.

  • Android Application for Final Year Project [closed]

    - by user1070241
I hope this is the right place to post this question. Basically, I'm about to choose a Final Year Project for my third and final year in BSc Computer Science. I have worked with different apps and therefore I do have some experience with the Android SDK Platform in general. However, my question is this, how do you think an Android based project would go down with potential employers? I personally don't think the complexity of this project is lower than other projects proposed by my university. Please let me know what you think, and do share any experiences that you have had with this, if any. Thank you very much.
