• Wireless not detected on an hp Pavilion g6

  I just bought an HP Pavilion g6 laptop and I installed Natty Narwhal alongside Windows 7. In Windows 7, my WiFi works perfect but in Ubuntu it absolutely (no matter what I do) won't detect my home WiFi network. • Trouble editing ~/.bash_profile: -bash: $'\r': command not found

  I installed CygWin on Windows 7. Using Notepad, I edited my ~/.bash_profile file to add on to the PATH variable … PATH="${PATH}:/cygdrive/c/apache-ant-1.8.2/bin" Now, when I SSH in to my Windows machine, I get this error … -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: $'\r': command not found -bash: /home/dev/.bash_profile: line 39: syntax error: unexpected end of file and my PATH is not set. Anyone know how I can correct this?

• Anomaly with bash PS1 definition

  My root and admin user both have the same .bashrc file. The prompt section of the .bashrc is the following: if [ "$color_prompt" = yes ]; then PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;32m\]\u@\h\[\033[00m\]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00m\]\$ ' else PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\u@\h:\w\$ ' fi unset color_prompt force_color_prompt # If this is an xterm set the title to user@host:dir case "$TERM" in xterm*|rxvt*) PS1="\[\e]0;${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\u@\h: \w\a\]$PS1" ;; *) ;; esac But the problem is that the admin user and root user have different prompts. admin's prompt is: admin@hostname:~$ and root's prompt is root@hostname:/home# So it seems root is using the "xterm" version and admin is not. Why does the .bashrc file have this difference in prompts? How do I get the admin user to also use the xterm version? How would I test that condition? If I run echo $TERM while running as the admin user I get xterm so as far as I can tell, it should be using the xterm version for the admin user.

• Client backup solution for small (100-150 user) homogenous win/nix/mac office?

  We are currently using Symantec Backup Exec with Desktop and Laptop Option for our Windows clients, time machine for mac and offer simple rsync to linux users, in addition to home folders that are always backed up and available. We are not overly happy with the horrid complexity and multitude of minor bugs in SBE, but "when you don't touch it, it mostly works". Ideally we'd like to offer a real and full backup solution to all clients, but mostly to Linux users, as they don't have a good alternative. I have barely tested Druva on windows, and it is promising in its simplicity and "it just works" looks, but does anyone have experience with it? This post lists some that I will look at.

• Nvidia optimus and Steam (on 12.04)

  I've obtained a copy of the .deb for the Steam beta, but it was pretty disappointing to see that it simply doesn't run. Hardware - Dell XPS L502, with Nvidia Optimus I have bumblebee installed. Trying to run Steam with the Intel HD 3000 completely fails to start it. Message received Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1352224866_client) followed by a crash with no other information provided. Trying to optirun steam runs the client, but as soon as it gets to the home screen, it says that the Nvidia drivers I am using are out of date (and Steam requires newer drivers to run). It's probably worth to note that it throws the same Installing breakpad... error when run with optirun, but it doesn't crash the client immediately. Any way to fix this? Also, is there a way of manually updating the drivers in bumblebee without breaking anything? Alternatively, is there a reliable way of completely disabling the Intel GPU (in order to use the Nvidia GPU exclusively)? Note: I am using Xmonad with gnome-fallback, if that makes a difference. However, when I tried everything mentioned with Unity (2d), everything was the same, so I guess it has nothing to do with the window manager in use.

• How to install software packages on a shared Red Hat Linux host account without root access or rpm?

  I have a shared RHEL 4 host account where I do not have root privileges. I would like to install Git and Bash Complete in a way that they can be upgraded easily. To date, I've just been installing from source providing $HOME as a prefix to autoconf. Obviously this isn't ideal as I need to hunt down the files associated with the version I'm upgrading away from and delete them. I've tried using rpm but I just get -bash: rpm: command not found back so it's not available. I also looked into checkinstall but it looks like that requires rpm, dpkg, or Slackware's package manager to be available. Is there anything out there that can be used like a package manager without requiring root access or an existing package manager?

• Ubuntu security with services running from /opt

  It took me a while to understand what's going on here (I think), but can someone explain to me if there are security risks with regards to my logic of what's going on here as I am trying to set up a home web server as a developer with some good Linux knowledge? Ubuntu is not like other systems, as it has restricted the root user account. You can not log in as root or su to root. This was a problem for me as I have had to install numerous applications and services to /opt as per user documentation (XAMPPfor Linux is a good example). The problem here is that this directory is owned by root:root. I notice that my admin user account does not belong to root group through the following command: groups username so my understanding is that even though the files and services that I place in /opt belong to root, executing them by means of sudo (as required) does not mean that they are run as root? I imagine that the sudo command is hidden somewhere under belonging to the root user and has a 775 permission? So the question I have is if running a service like Tomcat, Apcahe, etc exposes my system like on other systems? Obviously I need to secure these in configurations, but isn't the golden rule to never run something as root? What happens if I have multiple services running under same user/group with regards to a compromised server?

• What to do with a Blowfish Key?

  I just completed backing up 8 years of my Gmail using http://gmvault.org I selected the --encrypt option which uses Blowfish encryption. According to their site: Emails can be encrypted with the option -e --encrypt. With that option, the Blowfish encryption is used to crypt your emails and chats and the first time you activate it, a secret key is randomly generated and stored in $HOME/.gmvault/token.sec. Keep great care of the secret key as if you loose or delete it your stored emails won't be readable anymore !!! I'm using OSX Lion. I'm a software engineer but far from an encryption expert. What should I do with this key? It seems like leaving it where it is now (alongside the emails) sort of misses the point of encrypting them to begin with.

Having grown up in a household with one parent leaning left and the other leaning to the right it was the best way to keep the peace. This isn't about politics. It's about "constituents" and the need to improve the services and service levels for people--at the city, county, state/province, etc. level all the way up to national governments. As a citizen and tax payer it's also important to me that these services be provided at a reasonable cost. If there's a better and more efficient way to do something then it's my hope that a public sector organization takes advantage of technology the same way private sector companies do. Social services organizations have a complex job. They provide the services that people need, from healthcare and children's assistance to helping people find jobs. But many of these organizations are still managing these processes manually or outdated, home-grown applications that could have been written up to 30 years ago. A lot has changed in technology. On the (this is as political as I'm going to get) political front, stakeholders like you and me are expecting greater transparency on where and how funds are spent. I'll admit that most of the time, when I think about CRM systems, I think about my experience as a customer of my bank, utilities company or cable operator. But now that I'm older, have children and a house--I find myself interacting more and more with agencies and services organizations. My experiences are sometimes good and sometimes not so good. Along those lines, last week's announcement of Siebel CRM 8.2 for Public Sector caught my eye. You may not work in the public sector, but you are a constituent of some--actually a lot--of public sector organizations. I don't know which CRM systems city and county utilize but I'm going to start paying closer attention.

• How To Use AutoFill on a Google Docs Spreadsheet [Quick Tips]

  Have you ever wanted to fill an entire row or column with a series of values? If you’re an Excel user, you can do the same thing in Google Docs. If you haven’t used either, here’s the quick way to do it. Just type in a couple of numbers in sequence… 1 2 3 works pretty well. You could also put them across a row instead of down a column. Then move your mouse over the dot in the corner until the pointer changes, then just drag it downward (or if you are filling a row instead, you can drag it to the right). Let go of the mouse, and your data will be automatically filled in. You could also make it skip by 1 instead, like 2 4 6 8, etc… It all works the same way. Sadly there’s no really advanced options like Excel has, but for most uses, this is good enough. Also, we’re aware this is a very simple tip for most of you, but we’re trying to help the beginners out as well! • Blank screen after Switch User or Resume

  About half the time when I switch users or resume from standby or resume the screen goes blank (black). If I work the cursor keys I can hear the system bell when it gets to the end of the user list. I can also successfully login, going from memory, but screen stays black. Sometimes closing and re-opening the lid will light up the screen again. Pressing the special Function key to enable/disable external monitor connection has no effect [Fn]-[F5],[Fn]-[F6]. If none of the previous work I need to put the computer into hibernation or full power off to restore screen function. If I watch closely when switching users I think I can see the screen initially start to light up and then quickly fade to black. The computer is an Acer Aspire 3500, model ZL6, running Ubuntu 10.10 installed 2 days ago. No proprietary drivers are in use. I'll provide a list of hardware details as soon as I can figure out how to generate that (didn't there used to be an entry for hardware details under the System menu?). Possibly related questions: No resume after Hibernate or Standby When I resume from suspension - the screen is blank Switch user fails to complete successfully For what it's worth, blank after resume also used to happen occasionally when the laptop was running XP-Home, but nowhere near as often, perhaps 6 or 8 times a year. UPDATE: I found System Administration System Testing and ran the Monitor test. It went very very dark, but the window elements could be discerned, and the whole screen flashed (from very very dark to black). On the third repeat of that same test the screen went to full blaupck and stayed there. Moving the mouse, via touchpad, or touch keys did not wake it up again. I had to close the lid and put the computer into hibernate, and press the power button to restore it. • Starcraft II on Wine - Ubuntu 12.04

  I know this might seem like a repeat question, but I've literally looked over 100 threads on how to get SC2 to work on ubuntu 12.04 through wine and none have worked. I downloaded wine new today, and inserted my purchased SC2 disk. When I try to open the installer (installer.exe) with wine, an error appear saying: "No installer data could be found. If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support." I searched for solutions to mediate this issue and was directed to the following source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1435314 . I followed directions through until I got to ls I tried various combinations of (ls installer.exe, ls'/home/rothic/Desktop/Installer.exe, etc.) All come back with "no such file or directory". Im not sure what to do, the next step would be to replace the "starcraft_installer" with the starcraft installer file, which Im not sure how to do (very new to linux). I tried WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_starcraft/ wine starcraft_installer and it says "wine: cannot find L"C:\windows\system32\starcraft_installer.exe" despite it being on the desktop as advised. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

  In the last post, I have showed you how to create a simple site definition. In this post, I will continue with adding more features and customization to the site definition. Create a Top Nav bar for the home page. You need to modify the Onet.xml file by adding NavBar Child into NavBars element. (1002 is the magic number for top nav) and then adding NavBarPage under the File element as highlighted below in the picture. Next, I will include all the site and web features for all the list template and other features that are available in team site. Open OOB team site template by going to 14àTemplate àSiteTemplatesàstsàxmlàONET.XML Copy the web features and site features from the file we just opened to your site definition ONET.XML file. Finally I will include all the document template , copy document templates element from the file we just opened to your own ONET.XML Redeploy your solution and you will see all the document template and list template in your custom site.(Remember to delete all the sites using previous version of the custom definition before deploying and recreation the site.) • Can a file change size when the transfer protocol changes?

  I am very curious about what I have just found happening on my computers. I have set up SyncBackPro to synchronize a music folder from my home desktop to my laptop using Windows network share (SMB). Files get synchronized regularly. Now I tried to switch to FTP and I noticed that NO FILE matches its counterpart even if they have never been modified (I make sure there is the readonly flag and no application is allowed to retag MP3s and whatever...), so SyncBack asks me what side should overwrite the other. FTP files are a little larger than local files. I run synchronization from the laptop. How can such a thing happen? Files are the same, bytes should be the same... If I run SMB sync again it matches all the files again.

• Where is the best location to keep shared-developer website files in the linux hierarchy?

  I just started hosting files for a website on my server, and I'm not sure where is an appropriate place to keep them. At the moment, I have them in /var/www/name.of.virtualhost.site/www/. That's obviously not secure because anything below the final public /www/ folder is also available since the /var/www/ contents are already being served up. For example, /var/www/name.of.virtualhost.site/docs/site_policies.txt is accessible via something like defaultsite.com/name.of.virtualhost.site/docs/site_policies.txt. So where is a good place to store the files that make up a website? (when it's a site that only I'm developing, I can obviously just stick them in /home/my_username/sites/name.of.virtualhost.site/, but that doesn't work well when I want other developers to be working on the site's files as well) I'm running a LAMP stack, not that I expect it to matter.

• Problems with vim/locale as non-root user on Solaris

  I do some work on a Solaris 10 machine, and my .vimrc is set up to show unicode characters for tabs and line endings: set listchars=tab:?\ ,eol:¬ This works out of the box on my OS X machine. On Linux as well as Solaris I get the following error when I start vim: Error detected while processing /home/lhanson/.vimrc: line 17: E474: Invalid argument: listchars=tab:?~V?\ ,eol:¬ I solved this on my Linux box by setting LANG=en_US.utf8 ('locale -a' shows this as being an option). On Solaris, however, 'locale -a' shows the following: C POSIX iso_8859_1 Setting LANG to C or POSIX yields the same error, and even though iso_8859_1 probably wouldn't work it doesn't successfully change the locale anyway. As a non-root user, is there any way I can have my unicode characters show up?

• Windows update install hangs

  I'm trying to deploy .Net 3.5 on an XP home SP2 machine for a customer. The install fails, with an error about WIC. Trying to install WIC on its own gave an error about not being able to verify the application, because the cryptographic service wasn't running. A reboot got that service running, but now the install just hangs on the "inspecting your current configuration" Task manager reports that DrWatson is doing a lot (constantly using 10% of processor time) but beyond that I don't know how to instrument what a Windows machine is doing, has anyone seen this before?
