• How can I truncate an NSString to a set length?

  I searched, but surprisingly couldn't find an answer. I have a long NSString that I want to shorten. I want the maximum length to be around 20 characters. I read somewhere that the best solution is to use substringWithRange. Is this the best way to truncate a string? NSRange stringRange = {0,20}; NSString *myString = @"This is a string, it's a very long string, it's a very long string indeed"; NSString *shortString = [myString substringWithRange:stringRange]; It seems a little delicate (crashes if the string is shorter than the maximum length). I'm also not sure if it's Unicode-safe. Is there a better way to do it? Does anyone have a nice category for this?

• What is Causing This Memory Leak in Delphi?

  I just can't figure out this memory leak that EurekaLog is reporting for my program. I'm using Delphi 2009. Here it is: Memory Leak: Type=Data; Total size=26; Count=1; The stack is: System.pas _UStrSetLength 17477 System.pas _UStrCat 17572 Process.pas InputGedcomFile 1145 That is all there is in the stack. EurekaLog is pointing me to the location where the memory that was not released was first allocated. According to it, the line in my program is line 1145 of InputGedcomFile. That line is: CurStruct0Key := 'HEAD' + Level0Key; where CurStruct0Key and Level0Key are simply defined in the procedure as local variables that should be dynamically handled by the Delphi memory manager when entering and leaving the procedure: var CurStruct0Key, Level0Key: string; So now I look at the _UStrCat procedure in the System Unit. Surely a simple concatenate of a string constant to a local string variable should not be causing a memory leak. Why is EurekaLog pointing me to the ReallocMem line in a _UStrSetLength routine that is part of Delphi? This is Delphi 2009 and I am using the new unicode strings. Any help or explanation here will be much appreciated.

• Android multiple email attachment using Intent question

  Hi, I've been working on Android program to send email with attachment (image file , audio file , etc) using Intent with (ACTION_SEND) . THe program is working when email has a single attachment. I used Intent.putExtra( android.content.Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, uri) to attach the designated image file to the mail and it is wokring fine , the mail can be delivered through Gmail . However, when I tried to have multiple images attached to the same mail by calling Intent.putExtra( android.content.Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, uri) multiple times, it failed to work. None of the attachment show up in the email . I searched the SDK documentation and Android programming user group about email attachment but cannot find any related info. However, I've discovered that there's another intent constnat ACTION_SEND_MULTIPLE (available since API level 4 ) which might meet my requirement. Based on SDK documentation, it simply states that it deliver multiple data to someone else , it works like ACTION_SEND , excpet the data is multiple. But I still could not figure out the correct usage for this command. I tried to delcare intent with ACTION_SEND_MULTIPLE , then call putExtra(EXTRA_STREAM, uri) multiple times to attach multiple images , but I got the same errnoenous result just like before, none of the attachment show up in the email. Has anyone tried with ACTION_SEND_MULTIPLE and got it working with multiple email attachment ? Thanks very much for your help. Regards, yyyy1234

• Issues integrating NCover with CC.NET, .NET framework 4.0 and MsTest

  I'm implementing continuous integration with CruiseControl.NET, .NET 4.0, NCover and MsTest. On the build server I'm unable to run code coverage from the Ncover explorer or NCover console. When I run where vstesthost.exe from the Ncover console it returns the Visual Studio 9.0 path and does not seem to pick up .net framework 4.0. I've followed instructions from this MSTest: Measuring Test Quality With NCover post with slight modifications for .net framework 4.0, without any success.   I have a domain installed on virtual Windows Server 2008 x64. SQL Server 2008 Express x64 is running in Windows Server 2008 x64 and client on Windows 7 RTM x86. Both are into the domain. I'm starting both Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server Management Studio 2008 under domain admin user. This account is a member of group sysadmin on SQL Server. Server has firewall exceptions for both TCP and UDP on ports 135-139 and 1433-1434. Visual Studio 2008 Remote debugger services is started on server and Domain Admins group is allowed to debug, When I'm starting debugging of a query in SMS I'm getting this error: Failed to start debugger Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component. • AndroMDA maven code generation and JPA Annotations

  I am using the AndroMDA plugin for maven to generate code from an uml diagram made in MagicDraw. When the code is generated, AndroMDA desings the JPA annotation for the persitence layer. I think that at the compilation process AndroMDA uses Naming Strategies to determine the Table and Column names for the DataBase. I want to determine how AndroMDA desings this JPA annotations, because I need to display this DataBase names based on the UML entity and atributtes names. I was regarding if there is an API of AndroMDA that I could use to do this by giving it the uml diagram. Or at least, to know the Naming Strategies used by AndroMDA to achive that. AndroMDA at the compilation process design the JPA annotations for the Entities, Attributes, etc that are written in my java classes under a series of rules that exist within the EJB3 cartridge of AndroMDA. (The further Database is created using those JPA annotations). I want to create a program that returns me the same Table and Attributes names wrote on the JPA annotations, by giving it the .xml file of the uml diagram of a project. I was hoping that I could take advantage of the EJB3 cartridge to generate those Tables and Attribute names with my program. One way could be using an API of AndroMDA that do this(if it exits), or at least, by implementing the same rules used by the EJB3 cartridge for that matter. To be more illustrative, For example: If in my uml model I have an Entity called “CompanyGroup”, AndroMDA would generate the following code for the class definition: @javax.persistence.Entity @javax.persistence.Table(name = "COMPANY_GR") Public class CompanyGroup implements java.io.Serializable, Comparable< CompanyGroup This is just an example (not a real case), but nevertheless, the way how AndroMDA do the translation from “CompanyGroup” to “COMPANY_GR” has to be specified somewhere. • Confused about C++'s std::wstring, UTF-16, UTF-8 and displaying strings in a windows GUI

  I'm working on a english only C++ program for Windows where we were told "always use std::wstring", but it seems like nobody on the team really has much of an understanding beyond that. I already read the question titled "std::wstring VS std::string. It was very helpful, but I still don't quite understand how to apply all of that information to my problem. The program I'm working on displays data in a Windows GUI. That data is persisted as XML. We often transform that XML using XSLT into HTML or XSL:FO for reporting purposes. My feeling based on what I have read is that the HTML should be encoded as UTF-8. I know very little about GUI development, but the little bit I have read indicates that the GUI stuff is all based on UTF-16 encoded strings. I'm trying to understand where this leaves me. Say we decide that all of our persisted data should be UTF-8 encoded XML. Does this mean that in order to display persisted data in a UI component, I should really be performing some sort of explicit UTF-8 to UTF-16 transcoding process? I suspect my explanation could use clarification, so I'll try to provide that if you have any questions.

• Autonumber with Entity Framework

  I want to loop through a collection of objects and add them all to a table. The destination table has an auto-increment field. If I add a single object there is no problem. If I add two objects both with the primary key of zero, the entity framework fails. I can manually specify primary keys but the whole point of trying the EF was to make life easier not more complicated. Please advise how I can get more info in this situation.

• Ivar definitions show 'long' type encoding as 'long long' type encoding

  I've found what I think may be a bug with Ivar and Objective-C runtime. I'm using XCode 3.2.1 and associated libraries, developing a 64 bit app on X86_64 (MacBook Pro). Where I would expect the type encoding for the following "longVal" to be 'l', the Ivar encoding is showing a 'q' (which is a 'long long'). Anyone else seeing this?   Continuing a previous question I asked here, I now need to move to vs2010. I've gotten the most recent weekly build of WiX 3.5, the June 5th 2010 version.   I'm creating an iPad app, and I have two classes: NWRootViewController : UITableViewController and UINewFeedViewController : UIViewController. • Call functions in AutoIt DLL using Python ctypes

  I want to call functions from an AutoIt dll, that I found at C:\Program Files (x86)\AutoIt3\AutoItX\AutoItX3.dll using Python. I know I could use win32com.client.Dispatch("AutoItX3.Control") but I can't install the application or register anything in the system. So far, this is where I am: from ctypes import * path = r"C:\Program Files (x86)\AutoIt3\AutoItX\AutoItX3.dll" autoit = windll.LoadLibrary(path) Here are the methods that works: autoit.AU3_WinMinimizeAll() # windows were successfully minimized. autoit.AU3_Sleep(1000) # sleeps 1 sec. Here is my problem, python is crashing when I call other methods like this one. I get python.exe has stopped working from windows... autoit.AU3_WinGetHandle('Untitled - Notepad', '') And some other methods are not crashing python but are just not working. This one doesn't close the window and return 0: autoit.AU3_WinClose('Untitled - Notepad', '') And this other one return 1 but the window is still minimized: autoit.AU3_WinActivate('Untitled - Notepad', '') I've tested the examples with with Dispatch("AutoItX3.Control") and everything is working like expected. It seems like methods that should return something other than a string are crashing python. But still, others like WinClose are not even working... Thank you in advance for your help! • Using pinvoke in c# to call sprintf and friends on 64-bit

  I am having an interesting problem with using pinvoke in C# to call _snwprintf. It works for integer types, but not for floating point numbers. This is on 64-bit Windows, it works fine on 32-bit.
