• New Time Zone Patch DST V18 is available

  Sorry for not updating the blog more often at the moment - but more updates will come soon as I play around with Oracle Restart and single instance databases in ASM with Oracle 11.2. Just on the side there's a new time zone patch to DST V18 available since May 2012. You can download it via PATCH download from MOS with the patch number: 13417321 What do you think? Will Lufthansa operate a faster jet the other night? Will the jet stream be more powerful? Or a better type of fuel? Or is it just the travel portal which hasn't applied the correct time zone patches to catch DST change that night in the US whereas it happens two weeks later in Europe? Guess ... • Alternatives for saving data with jquery

  I am not sure if this question is considered too broad, but I would like to reach out to my fellow programmers to see what alternatives are out there for saving data using jquery. I have a content management system that generates an set of HTML pages called an IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual). The HTML pages are written in HTML and uses jquery. The ITEM is meant to be light weight, portable and run on most modern browsers. I am looking for a way to save data. I have considered cookies and sqlite. Are there any other alternatives for saving data using jquery?

• 4.8M wasn't enough so we went for 5.055M tpmc with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel r2 :-)

  We released a new set of benchmarks today. One is an updated tpc-c from a few months ago where we had just over 4.8M tpmc at $0.98 and we just updated it to go to 5.05M and $0.89. The other one is related to Java Middleware performance. You can find the press release here. Now, I don't want to talk about the actual relevance of the benchmark numbers, as I am not in the benchmark team. I want to talk about why these numbers and these efforts, unrelated to what they mean to your workload, matter to customers. The actual benchmark effort is a very big, long, expensive undertaking where many groups work together as a big virtual team. Having the virtual team be within a single company of course helps tremendously... We already start with a very big server setup with tons of storage, many disks, lots of ram, lots of cpu's, cores, threads, large database setups. Getting the whole setup going to start tuning, by itself, is no easy task, but then the real fun starts with tuning the system for optimal performance -and- stability. A benchmark is not just revving an engine at high rpm, it's actually hitting the circuit. The tests require long runs, require surviving availability tests, such as surviving crashes -and- recovery under load. In the TPC-C example, the x4800 system had 4TB ram, 160 threads (8 sockets, hyperthreaded, 10 cores/socket), tons of storage attached, tons of luns visible to the OS. flash storage, non flash storage... many things at high scale that all have to be perfectly synchronized. During this process, we find bugs, we fix bugs, we find performance issues, we fix performance issues, we find interesting potential features to investigate for the future, we start new development projects for future releases and all this goes back into the products. As more and more customers, for Oracle Linux, are running larger and larger, faster and faster, more mission critical, higher available databases..., these things are just absolutely critical. Unrelated to what anyone's specific opinion is about tpc-c or tpc-h or specjenterprise etc, there is a ton of effort that the customer benefits from. All this work makes Oracle Linux and/or Oracle Solaris better platforms. Whether it's faster, more stable, more scalable, more resilient. It helps. Another point that I always like to re-iterate around UEK and UEK2 : we have our kernel source git repository online. Complete changelog of the mainline kernel, and our changes, easy to pull, easy to dissect, easy to know what went in when, why and where. No need to go log into a website and manually click through pages to hopefully discover changes or patches. No need to untar 2 tar balls and run a diff.

• How do I find the JavaScript that is invoked when I click on a button or a link in a web-page (part of a data mining project)?

  I tried to use the 'inspect element' of the firebug addon for Firefox but it doesn't give me any link to the javascript. For example I got this from the firebug addon: < a href="javascript:" text of the link < /a But there is no link to the actual javascript or anything that I can use to directly go to the said link. How do I accomplish this? I need this as part of a personal data mining project that I am doing.

• Is QTWebKit still being actively developed? [closed]

  I am considering recommending PhantomJS/CasperJS for a project, to provide continuous integration testing. Unfortunately those testing frameworks are based on QTWebKit, and it does not appear that there has been much activity on QTWebKit since September of 2011. It seems this is because of Nokia's financial troubles. QT has since been sold to Digia in August of this year, and can be found on qt.digia.com. It is not apparent whether QTWebKit will be actively developed. Before putting the effort into developing a PhantomJS/CasperJS testing framework, I would like to know whether the underlying QTWebKit framework is probably going to continue to be actively developed (or, alternatively, could be easily substituted with an alternative). I would suspect that since Digia just acquired QT it is a little too soon to tell what direction they will take the project. I would be interested in thoughts and comments on this issue.

Numerous studies have shown that the confluence of ever-rising sales of smartphones and tablets; and the increasing tendency for workers of all kinds to be more mobile and less tied down to traditional, fixed-location workplaces and what now seem like old-fashioned PC-centric and traditional computing environments are driving Human Resources leaders to think about how, where, when, and for whom that the deployment of mobile HR solutions will help them address their business needs, and put information in the hands of those that need it, when they need it, and on their preferred devices. In the session we talked about some of the potential opportunities for mobile HR technologies, from simple workflow-based approval capability, to employee directories and robust employee profiles, to more advanced use cases like internal social networking and location-based mobile recruiting applications. And truly we are just scratching the surface of the potential and the value that all kinds of HR-related mobile technologies will help deliver to enterprises in the coming years. Additionally, it was encouraging to talk with many of the HR leaders in attendance who expressed interest in these kinds of mobile HR technology opportunities, as well as to hear how some of them are already working on developing their own mobile strategies or experimenting with mobile solutions in their workforces.   Der Zugriff auf Datenbanken über das Netzwerk stellt aus Security Sicht einen ausgesprochen kritischen Vorgang dar, der unbedingt vor Missbrauch geschützt werden muss. Deshalb ist es auch nicht weiter verwunderlich, dass im Security Ecosystem etliche Produkte angeboten werden, die diesen Zugriff sichern helfen: Das beginnt bei Firewalls mit SQL Net Proxy, geht über Produkte wie die Oracle Database Firewall, die einen Schutz vor SQL Injection Angriffen über das Netzwerk leisten, und endet etwa bei den Angeboten zur Netzwerkverschlüsselung, wie sie im Oracle Datenbankumfeld vor allem die Advanced Security Option anbietet. Aber vor jedem Einsatz schwieriger oder kostspieliger Mittel zur Steigerung der Sicherheit einer Datenbank steht der Einsatz solcher Mittel, die ohne zusätzliche Kosten oder relativ einfach zu implementieren sind. Dazu gehören das bereits in einem Community Artikel andiskutierte  Härten der Datenbank oder das in einem weiteren Artikel angesprochene Umsetzen des  Prinzips des least privilege. Im vorliegenden Artikel soll darauf eingegangen werden, wie die Verbindungsaufnahme zur Datenbank über einen Listener Prozess sowie die Netzwerkverbindung zwischen Client und Datenbank über SQL Net eigene Mittel so konfiguriert werden können, dass dies die Sicherheit einer Datenbank ohne Zusatzkosten erhöht. • How do I install Java?

  I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I recently installed openjdk-jre6 because one of the websites I use requires java for me to log in. Unfortunately, even after installing openjdk-jre6, I am not able to use the website. In place of 2 text boxes where I am supposed to enter my username and password, it simply shows a message "click here to download plugin". I am using Firefox by the way. I even tried to install java by clicking on that message. But it says "Java Runtime Environment not available". And then gives me a button to install java manually. But I would rather install it from the repo's. Could someone please tell me, what I should do to get Firefox to take note of the openjdk-jre6 that I have already installed?
