    Everybody who used P/Invoke of Windows API knows a long list of declarations of static functions with attributes like [DllImport ("kernel32.dll", SetLastError = true, CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] The declaration of structures copied from Windows headers like WinNT.h or from web sites like www.pinvoke.net take also a lot of place in our programs. Why we all have to spend our time for this? Why Microsoft not give us a simple way to include a line like in old unmanaged programs #include <windows.h> and we would be have access to a static class Native with all or the most Windows functions and structures inside?

  • Any useful suggestions to figure out where memory is being free'd in a Win32 process?

    An application I am working with is exhibiting the following behaviour: During a particular high-memory operation, the memory usage of the process under Task Manager (Mem Usage stat) reaches a peak of approximately 2.5GB (Note: A registry key has been set to allow this, as usually there is a maximum of 2GB for a process under 32-bit Windows) After the operation is complete, the process size slowly starts decreasing at a rate of 1MB per second. I am trying to figure out the easiest way to quickly determine who is freeing this memory, and where it is being free'd. I am having trouble attaching a memory profiler to my code, and I don't particularly want to override the new/delete operators to track the allocations/deallocations (IOW, I want to do this without re-compiling my code). Can anyone offer any useful suggestions of how I could do this via the Visual Studio debugger? Update I should also mention that it's a multi-threaded application, so pausing the application and analysing the call stack through the debugger is not the most desirable option. I considered freezing different threads one at a time to see if the memory stops reducing, but I'm fairly certain this will cause the application to crash.

    The application do not need any window or console. It can be a console application if the console window can be removed or can be put into background. The application will do some simple tasks(such as cleaning rubbish files) and exit. I hope that the application should not be a windows service if possible. I hope that the application can be started with double-click in explorer window and run silently. When the application is running, I hope that the mouse cursor should not be changed to hourglass shape. That is to say, do not disturb the user when the application is running. Just run and exit silently. DO NOT NEED to run it when windows starts or user logins. I hope this can be done in C if possible. What should I do? Thanks!

    I have a Windows application written in C++ that occasionally evaporates. I use the word evaporate because there is nothing left behind: no "we're sorry" message from Windows, no crash dump from the Dr. Watson facility... On the one occasion the crash occurred under the debugger, the debugger did not break---it showed the application still running. When I manually paused execution, I found that my process no longer had any threads. How can I capture the reason this process is terminating?

  • How do I change the viewport of a window in win32?

    Hi, I have a window with child windows inside in it. The child windows take up about 1000 pixels of vertical space. However, our users don't always have 1000 pixels of vertical space available - they might have as little as 500 or 600 pixels. I want to be able to display this window at a size of 500 pixels high, and have the user "scroll" up and down the window to see the full contents. The window should always be 500 pixels high, but the view within it should change. Assume I can add a scroll bar somewhere so the user can choose which part of the window he wants to see. Windows will normally paint the window contents from height 0 to height 500; how do I tell it instead to "paint from height 250 to height 750", for example? I know that I can set the viewport with functions like SetViewportOrgEx etc, but those functions require a device context - when do I call them if I want them to be "permanent"? Do I call them when I get the WM_PAINT message from windows? Or at some other time? And which functions from that family do I want to use? Thanks.

However, instead of running the interactive Python shell, I want to run a specific Python script that features an interactive CLI. (See Python's cmd module for details).     So, I'm trying to get gtksourceview python bindings work under windows (I'm developing a cross platform gtk application that shows code, so gtksourceview seemed like a natural choice). I have pygtk installed and working (I followed the instructions in http://www.pygtk.org/downloads.html) I tried the instructions in http://projects.gnome.org/gtksourceview/ for gtksourceview. Here is what I did: Downloaded and extracted the latest gtksourceview window binaries from: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/gtksourceview/2.10/gtksourceview-2.10.0.zip The website said gtksourceview needs libxml, so I downloaded and extracted the latest libxml window binaries from: http://xmlsoft.org/sources/win32/libxml2-2.7.6.win32.zip Added the folders containing dll files to the PATH (in my computer they were c:\opt\gtksourceview\bin; C:\opt\libxml2-2.7.6.win32\bin) Installed pygtksourceview with the windows installer: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/pygtksourceview/2.10/pygtksourceview-2.10.0.win32-py2.6.exe Renamed the file libxml2.dll to libxml2-2.dll (after running depends on the gtksourceview dll) Now, the gtksouceview widget seems to work, until I'm trying to set the code's language. When I do that python crashes.   • In Scrum, should you split up the backlog in a functional backlog and a technical backlog or not?

    In our Scrum teams we use a backlog, which mostly contains functional topics, but also sometimes contains technical topics. The advantage of having 1 backlog is that it becomes easy to choose the topics for the next sprint, but I have some questions: First, to me it seems more logical to have a separate technical backlog, where developers themselves can add pure technical items, like: we could improve performance in this method, this class lacks some technical documentation, ... By having one backlog, all developers always have to pass via the product owner to have their topics added to the backlog, which seems additional, unnecessary work for the product owner. Second, if you have a product owner that only focuses on the pure-functional items, the pure-technical items (like missing technical documentation, code that erodes and should be refactored, classes that always give problems during debugging because they don't have a stable foundation and should be refactored, ...) always end up at the end of the list because "they don't serve the customer directly". By having a separate technical backlog, and time reserved in every sprint for these pure technical items, we can improve the applications functionally, but also keep them healthy inside. What is the best approach? One backlog or two?

I need to run the application in Full Trust with the new mode made available in .NET 4 which asks the end user if the full trust application should be run.   • .NET Exception error, what does this error means?

    I've tried to develop a simple winform utility which is using xml file as its database. I've used VS 2008 express edition, C#. When this utility tries to write into the xml file then this error is displayed on other computer. I've tried to provide System.Xml.dll & System.Xml.Linq.dll in the same folder on the other computer but no use. What does it means? Any solution? It then searches the static libraries the project uses - by project reference, explicit import and automatic default library imports; but it does so in an order that, again, seems arbitrary to me. Does this project really not use anything from msvcrt.lib, kernel32.lib? Seems unlikely. So basically I'm looking to decipher the underlying order in the linker's operation.

Derived classes have to implement default constructor, copy constructor, copy assignment operator and destructor. My attempt: class Base { public: virtual ~Base() {}; /* some pure virtual functions */ private: Base() = default; Base(const Base& base) = default; Base& operator=(const Base& base) = default; } This gives some errors complaining that (for one) the copy constructor is private. But i don't want this mimicked constructor to be called. Can anyone give me the correct construction to do this if this is at all possible?

    we all know that Google's affects your page rank with the load time of a page. How? That's part of the secret sauce. But we know that page speed is a serious factor. So - what is considered the speed of a page? Is it just the first (and main) html file which the GET receives? Or does it also include loading of images as part of that speed. so for example... GET /index.htm <- takes 0.45 seconds to retrieve (including DNS lookup before). robot parses page.. see's there's a single main image.... GET /img/main.png <- takes 5 seconds to download. is the page speed for that resource, 0.45 seconds OR 5.45 seconds? I understand Javascript is not fired .. but are any of these external resources all downloaded and part of the page speed?

    We've been using GA for a few years with no probs. About 2-3 weeks ago we tried to clean up some of our tracking and on one of our profiles, it's not working anymore (since oct 10.) First, some context then some GA Debugging code. 1. Context. We have the following setup: different root domains AND different sub-domains on one of the root domains. www.website.com www.website.com.au www.anotherWebsite.com foo.website.com baa.website.com So what we're doing is the following: each root domain and each sub-domain get their own tracking code. This way we can allow separate people (from outside our company) to access only their own data. Eg. a manager for foo.website.com can only see data related to that domain .. and see data on the other domains. Have a last account which is the SUM of all the domains. this is for us. so we can see total numbers. So to do this, we have two trackers that fire off, on the page. the individual accounts all work fine - they seem to be tracking data ok. the 'global' account is not working and this gives us the = Tracking Not Installed error. This has been going on since oct 10. So the wait 24/48/72 hours thing is waaaaay over. 2. GA Debug code. Installing GA Debug chrome extension gives the following output. I've tried to hide anything that could be considered secret. UA-XXXXX34-1 == Global account (which isn't working any more). But a number of SEO mates have suggested that this is a valuable waste of folder level space. Er.. how can i explain. Ok, it's been suggested by some SEO experts that if the number of levels or folders in the domain exceeds 5 then the page drops dramatically in importance. Basically, you don't want to make it deep. As such, adding the country as the first level can be considered a waste, especially when it can be handled by the domain OR subdomain - hence the question :) So, any more thoughts on this? (Maybe SO is the wrong place to ask this question?)

  • How to build gnu `libiconv` on & for windows?

    Hello, I want to build a static library (*.LIB file) GNU libiconv on windows to be used with other libraries in Visual C++. Other libraries I'm using are built with "MultiThreaded DLL" (/MD) Runtime option. So, I need to build libiconv with the same option. Problem is the libiconv uses GNU build system and I want to compile with /MD option. You can see the source structure of libiconv here: http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewvc/libiconv/?root=libiconv Actually, Mr. Zlatkovic maintains the windows port of GNU libiconv for libxml2 you can see them here: ftp://xmlsoft.org/libxml2/win32/iconv-1.9.2.win32.zip ftp://xmlsoft.org/libxml2/win32/iconv-1.9.2.win32.zip I cannot use his port. I need to build from the latest version of libiconv-1.13. I wonder how this guy has ported it? Can some one please tell me how to build *.lib from this and compile it using MSVC?
