• Aus 2 mach 1: Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall

  Gestern hat Oracle bekanntgegeben, dass die beiden Produkte Oracle Audit Vault und Oracle Database Firewall zu einem Produkt werden. Der neue Produktname wird "Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall" sein. Software und Dokumentation werden in den nächsten Tagen zum Download verfügbar sein. Das Zusammenlegen macht durchaus Sinn, denn die ursprünglichen Produkte wiesen im Bereich der Protokollierung und des Berichtswesens deutliche Überschneidungen auf. Damit lag es nahe, die Repositories für das Speichern des Protokolls zu vereinheitlichen. Endlich wird es im Bereich Auditing durch die Einführung eines Development Kits auch möglich sein, Systeme anzubinden, für die Oracle keine vorgefertigten Konnektoren / Kollektoren liefert. Mit der Zusammenlegung verbunden ist ein völlig neues Lizenzierungsmodell, das zu deutlichen Kostensenkungen für kleinere und mittlere Installationen führt.

• How do you off load work from the database?

  In at least the web development field, web servers are everywhere but are backed by very few database servers. As web servers get hit with requests they execute large queries on the database, putting the server under heavy load. While web servers are very easy to scale, db servers are much harder (at least from what I know), making them a precious resource. One way I've heard from some answers here to take load off the database is to offload the work to the web server. Easy, until you realize that now you've got a ton of traffic internally as a web server tries to run SELECT TOP 3000 (presumably to crunch the results on its own), which still slows things down. What are other ways to take load off the database?

• Mehr Sicherheit für Netzwerkverbindungen

  Der Zugriff auf Datenbanken über das Netzwerk stellt aus Security Sicht einen ausgesprochen kritischen Vorgang dar, der unbedingt vor Missbrauch geschützt werden muss. Deshalb ist es auch nicht weiter verwunderlich, dass im Security Ecosystem etliche Produkte angeboten werden, die diesen Zugriff sichern helfen: Das beginnt bei Firewalls mit SQL Net Proxy, geht über Produkte wie die Oracle Database Firewall, die einen Schutz vor SQL Injection Angriffen über das Netzwerk leisten, und endet etwa bei den Angeboten zur Netzwerkverschlüsselung, wie sie im Oracle Datenbankumfeld vor allem die Advanced Security Option anbietet. Aber vor jedem Einsatz schwieriger oder kostspieliger Mittel zur Steigerung der Sicherheit einer Datenbank steht der Einsatz solcher Mittel, die ohne zusätzliche Kosten oder relativ einfach zu implementieren sind. Dazu gehören das bereits in einem Community Artikel andiskutierte  Härten der Datenbank oder das in einem weiteren Artikel angesprochene Umsetzen des  Prinzips des least privilege. Im vorliegenden Artikel soll darauf eingegangen werden, wie die Verbindungsaufnahme zur Datenbank über einen Listener Prozess sowie die Netzwerkverbindung zwischen Client und Datenbank über SQL Net eigene Mittel so konfiguriert werden können, dass dies die Sicherheit einer Datenbank ohne Zusatzkosten erhöht. • MIX10: Yet another way to view video content sessions using their OData feed

  Well, MIX10 is over. It was a great time to meet a lot of people and see friends from afar. As anyone knows, the networking is a HUGE part of being in-person at any conferencethat vibe, value and friendship cannot be matched online. But the sessions there were a TON of them. • Learning C, Lisp, and UNIX from Ground Up

  A friend and I are trying to learn traditional programming from the ground up. We both do web stuff primarily but want to expand to more system related things. We have found a ton of resources but looking for a road map of sorts. We are planning on using SICP to learn Lisp(scheme). Don't really know where to from there. As for C, we figured we'd start with K&R, then do OOC, and sprinkle in Operating Systems Design and Implementation and kind of learn UNIX as we go. I'd really appreciate suggestions on filling in the gaps, reordering things, or just advice in general.

• Move the home directory back to single partition

  I've seen a ton of tutorials on how to move your home directory to a separate partition. I want to do the opposite. I have two HDDs. One /home/ and the other is everything else (both drives have only one partition). I'm selling the computer but want to keep one of the hard drives. So, I'd like to move the home directory and system files back onto a single drive. Which ever way is quickest/easiest (separate partitions or all on one partition). Thank you!

• Motivation Problems, Middle School Programmer [closed]

  I'm in middle school at the moment and have been programming for about a year and a half. I mostly work with Python and Ruby, and am currently learning Rails. I know, you can never learn enough, it takes a looong time to master a subject, but I feel like I don't have much left to learn :(. I've learned many concepts in Python, learned basically the whole std lib and have written a ton of programs, same with Ruby. In Ruby I've also done a lot of metaprogramming. After I've learned all the concepts, and written a lot of programs, there is nothing really left for me to do! What can I do, now that I've learned all the concepts, and written some programs? I can't get a job working with real developers, and the programming camp I went to last year was far too easy.

• Language Design: Are languages like phyton and coffescript really more comprehendable?

  the "Verbally Readable !== Quicker Comprehension" arguement on http://ryanflorence.com/2011/case-against-coffeescript/ is really potent and interesting. i and im sure other would be very interested in evidence arguing against this. there's clear evidence for this and i believe it. ppl naturally think in images, not words, so we should be designing languages dissimilar to human language like english, french, whatever. being "readable" is quicker comprehension. most articles on wikipedia are not readable as they are long, boring, dry, sluggish, very very wordy, and because wikipedia documents a ton of info, is not especially helpful when compared to much more helpful sites with more practical, useful, and relevant info. but languages like phyton and coffescript are "verbally readable" in that they are closer to the english language syntax, and programming firstly and mainly in python, im not so sure this is really a good thing. the second interesting argument is that coffeescript is an intermediator so thereby another step between to ends, which may increase chances of bugs. while coffeescript has other practical benefits, this question is focused specifically on evidence showing support for the counter-case of language "readability"

• asp.net web apps: are OnServerValidate necessary with custom validators

  I recently created a .net web app that used over 200 custom validators on one page. I wrote code for both ClientValidationFunction and OnServerValidate which results in a ton of repetitive code. My sql statements are parameterized, I have functions that pull data from input fields and validates them before passing to the sql statements or stored procedures. And the javascript validates the fields before the page submits. So essentially the data is clean and valid before it even hits the OnServerValidate and clean after it anyways due to the aforementioned steps. This makes me question, is OnServerValidate really needed when I validate on the clientside?

• Legality of copying information from a Wikia? [closed]

  I'm making a website that will act as a compendium for a video game. I noticed that a page from Wikia has a ton of useful content such as background stories and trivia for many of the "entities" in the game. According to their site: The text on Wikia sites is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License 3.0 (Unported) (CC-BY-SA). I'm not a lawyer; so what is the legality of copying and pasting the information written there collaboratively by the hivemind, into my website? If needed I would not be opposed to pasting the content and providing a source link at the end of each paragraph. Can I paste the content into my site? Thanks for the help!

  Are there any tools available for the following use case: I am planning to write a complex application and now I just know about the basic functional requirments. I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective. I am in a situation where there are multiple ways implement a certain functionality and based on the selected approach, other parts of the program will also change. At this moment, I don't want to decide on the approach to use, I just want to list down all the options, present to a wider audience and get it finalized. Are there any standard software tools to do this? • Ad networks that will serve via HTTPS?

  I've built a website with 160K page views per month that serves every page over HTTPS. The recent FireSheep news will probably increase the adoption of "HTTPS everywhere" but it's been very hard to find ad networks and affiliates that will serve their content via HTTPS. I don't want to use these because I don't want my visitors to get "broken security" notification from their browsers (and of course, relevant ads would be a leak of private information). I'm tired of spending a ton of time signing up with ad networks and affiliates only to find out down the road that they don't support HTTPS (e.g. AdSense). Can anyone suggest any options or provide a pointer to a list of these somewhere?

  Laut einer Umfrage von Synetics unter rund 1500 Administratoren anlässlich des Tages des Systemadministrators beschäftigen sich 38 % der Befragten überhaupt nicht mit IT-Sicherheit und IT-Sicherheitsmanagement. Nur 32,6 % beschäftigen sich lediglich ein bis 2 Stunden pro Wochen mit dem Thema Sicherheit für ihre Umgebung. Die meiste Arbeitszeit wird indes auf das Servermanagement verwendet. 46,2% der Befragten gaben an 10 Stunden und mehr für das verwalten und instandhalten der Server zu verwenden.
