  • How do I make the 32-bit Perl read the 64-bit Windows registry?

    I have a 32-bit perl installer. Using this I need to be able to install and uninstall both 32- and 64-bit applications. Installing 32- and 64-bit is fine. Uninstalling 32-bit is also ok. However, I have a problem while uninstalling 64-bit applications. The application just knows the name of the application as seen in Add Remove programs in control panel. For instance it could be "Winzip 14.0" which is the display name for Winzip. I use the following approach for uninstallation : I traverse to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall and parse the keys present there to see if Winzip is matching. If so i get the uninstall string from there. my $register = "SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Uninstall"; $HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Open($register,$hKey)|| die $!; #Then parse all the nodes and fetch the uninstall string If the application is a 64-bit installation, then the uninstallation information will reside in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall. However the above given perl installer code is trying to read from HKLM/Software/WOW6432Node/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall and it does not find the installation there. So how do I make the Perl code running in a 32_bit process to read the registry value found in 64-bit hive? I am aware of the RegOpenKey() API that takes KEY_WOW64_64KEY parameter. But since it is a Windows API, I dont know if that will help. Even then, is there any other alternative?

  • Recommend a good db4o viewer

    I'm playing around with db4o, and I have the Object Manager viewer thingy for Visual Studio. It seems okay, but not exactly on par with tools like HeidiSQL/SQL Studio/etc., not to mention that it locks the db4o file--I can't use my db4o app and Object Manager at the same time. Maybe I'm using it wrong, but regardless, I'd like to know what else is out there. What tools would you recommend for looking at and manipulating db4o files?

  • Flash Builder missing fundamental things

    All of a sudden Flash Builder 4 is missing all kinds of fundamental things and is generating incorrect errors. I've had the same issue yesterday, where I fixed it by downloading a new Flex SDK and importing that into FB. I did this again, but this time it fixed nothing. I don't think it's something I did, like removing critical references from the build path. The errors also appeared on projects I was not working on at the time. It occurs for ActionScript, Flex and Flex Library projects alike.   • How do you host multiple public facing websites on a VPS?

    We host about 30 websites using typical shared hosting plans using ASP.NET and SQL 2000/2005/2008. I am now wondering about hosting all of these websites using our own virtual private server such as http://www.crystaltech.com/vps.aspx This is clearly cheaper but comes with a lot of questions I need answers to: Is the risk of having to keep this VPS server up and running worth it? Until now, the host provider has managed the server and we have not had to worry about crashes, downtime, software patches etc. We are not server administrators, we are programmers, so this is not really our expertise. On the other hand, it may not be hard to learn. When we make a website live, we log in to a domain management control panel and change the primary and secondary name servers to point to our shared web host: Eg ns1.sharedwebhost.com and ns2.sharedwebhost.com These name servers are going to have to change when we have a VPS. I don’t understand anything about how to set this up. Is there some useful info anyone could direct me to? Or is there software we need to install to make the primary and secondary name servers work on our VPS? The control panel we have for shared hosting comes with DNS management like this: What software would I need to install to create this for each site we host at a VPS? The control panel we have for shared hosting also comes with a POP email interface that allows email addresses to be added easily: Is this something that can be easily set up at a VPS so clients can manage their own email addresses? Is there software we need to install to make this work?

    I just downloaded the Java SDK/JDK versions 5 and 6, and I just need the development tools (and some libraries) contained in the installation packages, I don't need to perform an installation and that's why I was only looking for a zip package at first (for Windows there is only an exe installation file), I only need to extract the contents of the installation packages, I think this can be done from the command line but so far I haven't found how to do this (I already considered WinRar and 7-Zip, but I really want to find how to do it without using these tools) Have you done this before and how?

  • How to force two process to run on the same CPU?

    Context: I'm programming a software system that consists of multiple processes. It is programmed in C++ under Linux. and they communicate among them using Linux shared memory. Usually, in software development, is in the final stage when the performance optimization is made. Here I came to a big problem. The software has high performance requirements, but in machines with 4 or 8 CPU cores (usually with more than one CPU), it was only able to use 3 cores, thus wasting 25% of the CPU power in the first ones, and more than 60% in the second ones. After many research, and having discarded mutex and lock contention, I found out that the time was being wasted on shmdt/shmat calls (detach and attach to shared memory segments). After some more research, I found out that these CPUs, which usually are AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon, use a memory system called NUMA, which basically means that each processor has its fast, "local memory", and accessing memory from other CPUs is expensive. After doing some tests, the problem seems to be that the software is designed so that, basically, any process can pass shared memory segments to any other process, and to any thread in them. This seems to kill performance, as process are constantly accessing memory from other processes. Question: Now, the question is, is there any way to force pairs of processes to execute in the same CPU?. I don't mean to force them to execute always in the same processor, as I don't care in which one they are executed, altough that would do the job. Ideally, there would be a way to tell the kernel: If you schedule this process in one processor, you must also schedule this "brother" process (which is the process with which it communicates through shared memory) in that same processor, so that performance is not penalized.

    I have a WPF app that I'm deploying to a network path using ClickOnce deployment. After the app is deployed to a network location, I use the ClickOnce html page to launch the installation process. I am successfully able to download and install the app. However, my users are not able to download and install the app. When a user navigates to the ClickOnce html page and clicks to begin the installation process, the following error message is received: ERROR SUMMARY Below is a summary of the errors, details of these errors are listed later in the log. * Activation of http://software.mycompany.com/myapp/myapp.application resulted in exception. Following failure messages were detected: + Downloading file://dev/webs/software/myapp/myapp.application did not succeed. * [4/5/2010 1:56:59 PM] System.Deployment.Application.DeploymentDownloadException (Unknown subtype) - Downloading file://dev/Webs/software/myapp/myapp.application did not succeed. All signs point to this being a security issue. So, I've done the following: Ensured that "Everyone" had read access to the files that were being deployed as part of my project Ensured that "Everyone" had read access to the network location where the app was deployed (//dev/webs/software/myapp) Ensured that "Everyone" had read access to the IIS path where the ClickOnce html page is located In each of these cases, I've made no progress in getting the app to successfully deploy via ClickOnce. Again, the odd thing is that I am able to successfully walk through the process of downloading and installing the app. It's my users, though, that need the ability to download and install the app. I've looked extensively on the web for answers, but there hasn't been much. I'd like to resolve the issue without "re-installing" or "rigging" anything. I need a solid answer. Thank you all for your input!! Mike

Installation proceeds without and problems and the system runs normally but there is no /plugins directory (on both versions):- \Program Files (x86)\Neo4j Community\ \Program Files (x86)\Neo4j Community\.install4j \Program Files (x86)\Neo4j Community\bin I am trying to install the Spatial plugin .. so I tried creating the \plugins directory.   • Android app crashes when I change the default xml layout file to another

    I am currently just starting to learn android development and have created a basic "Hello world" app that uses "activity_main.xml" for the default layout. I tried to create a new layout xml file called "new_layout.xml" with a text view, a text field and a button and did the following changes in the MainActivity.java file: setContentView(R.layout.new_layout); I did nothing else expect for adding a new_layout.xml in the res/layout folder, I have tried restarting and cleaning the project but nothing.   • Textbased issue-tracker/todo list for Git?

    I've been managing all of my todo-lists as ~/git-repo/todo which is kept under git. THen I add/delete files from the todo list, and have git autocommit all changes. However, I feel there should be more powerful tools. Besides "cil" and git-issues [neither of which I've tried], what tools are available? PS I want something that's entirely text/command line based.   • What's the use of Ant's extension-point if/unless attributes?

    When you define an extension-point in an Ant build file you can have it conditional by using the if or unless attribute. On a target the if/unless prevent it's tasks from being run. But an extension-point doesn't have any tasks to conditionally run, so what does the condition do? My thought (which proved to be incorrect in Ant 1.8.0) is it would prevent any tasks that extend the extension-point from being run.   • IntellIJ editor doesn't appear

    I updated my IntellIJ install to the latest version (11.1.4) and now the Editor window doesn't appear. Double-clicking on the file, jump-to-source, nothing happens. No error message, it just doesn't appear. If I double-click on an xml layout file the preview window works, but no Editor window. Have installed and reinstalled; went back to an earlier version and it doesn't work there either. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Update: Editor works if I create a new project.   • Re-using aggregate level formulas in SQL - any good tactics?

    Imagine this case, but with a lot more component buckets and a lot more intermediates and outputs. This results in code duplication. I have thought of using UDFs (either scalar or table valued with an OUTER APPLY, since many of the final results may share intermediates which have to be calculated at the aggregate level), but in my experience the scalar and multi-statement table-valued UDFs perform very poorly. Also thought about using more dynamic SQL and applying the formulas by name, basically. Any other tricks, techniques or tactics to keeping these kinds of formulae which need to be applied at different levels in sync and/or organized?

  • What electronic scrum/kanban board do you use and recommend for distributed teams?

    I have a coworker on a team that is fairly distributed, fairly large (for our company) and wants to take advantage of visual management tools like scrum / kanban boards. Since they are a somewhat distributed team, though, all of the issue management / work management must be done via an electronic tool (we currently use Trac). What issue / work management tools, with a visualization of a scrum / kanban board, do you use for your distributed scrum / kanban teams? would you recommend it, and if so, why?
