  • Could the cause of recent Toyota computing problems be an interface mismatch ?

    - by Spux
Any ideas if the recent Toyota computing errors had something to do with the fact they where using an object orintated approach then took a data orientated approach thus causing user interface errors ? Studying programming languages with in interface robotic design and wondered if the car computing glitch Toyota has been having could have something to do with using a different programming approach with out reprogramming the whole system from scratch.

  • Using pointers in PHP.

    - by Babiker
    I ask this question because i learned that in programming and designing, you must have a good reason for decisions. I am php learner and i am at a crossroad here, i am using simple incrementation to try to get what im askin across. I am certainly not here to start a debate about the pros/cons of pointers but when it comes to php, which is the better programming practice: function increment(&$param) { $param++; } Or function increment($param){ return $param++; } $param = increment($param);

  • How can I convert videos for Sony Xperia U on my Linux box?

    - by Konstantin
I would like to send a few videos for my girlfriend, but I would ensure they are playable on her mobile phone. I want to carry out the encoding tasks on my Arch Linux box, because my PC is a low end. I can use only ffmpeg or mencoder or other CLI tool. She can play youtube videos but I don't want to upload such videos to youtube. Are there any presets for specific mobile phones? And when she simply clicks a video direct link will it play directly on the cellphone or should I embed it in a html5 / flash player, like on youtube?

  • Learn ASP.NET or Python for web development?

    - by user300371
I am new to programming and only know html, css,PHP and would like to start learning another new language. I am focused on web development and would just like to get your opinion on ASP.net and python. Which language would serve me best in making sites as to general programming? ASP.NET or django python? I know Python is "easy to learn" and similar to PHP, but ASP.net is also a good language.

  • How do I move from being a software developer to being a software architect?

    - by Nestor
I mean... Should I start programming less and designing more? Should I stop reading programming books, and start reading more books about pattern designs, etc? Should I stop focusing primarily on Microsoft technologies and open up my horizons with other technologies (in order to get a broader perspective)? How should I change my mind set in general (perhaps less detail oriented) ? etc I'm looking for concrete advice, especially from your own experience!

  • Anybody using Qi4J

    - by Jon
I was reading an InfoQ article on Composite Oriented Programming earlier on: http://www.infoq.com/articles/Composite-Programming-Qi4j I was interested in finding out whether anybody is currently using (or has used) the Qi4j framework at all? How does it compares to using a traditional dependency injection framework such as Spring for wiring classes together. Is the resulting object graph (based on mixins rather than classes) easier to deal with from a maintenance point of view?

  • What software has been written in Scheme?

    - by skiphoppy
I loved Scheme in the programming languages concepts class I took several years ago. Ever since reading what Paul Graham has to say about Lisp, I've been intending to go back and pick Scheme up again and see if it'll improve my programming in general. Are there any well-known works of software written in Scheme? Open source packages? Websites?

  • 64 Bit Windows drivers for Inspiron 1720

    - by Rob Allen
Dell doesn't seem to offer 64 bit drivers specifically for the Inspiron 1720 (laptop). I'm going to be upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64bit and I want to pull down the necessary stuff before hand. Are there any Dell systems that are similar enough to the Inspiron 1720 that I can use for a baseline to make sure I still have Ethernet and WiFi after the reinstall? It doesn't matter if they are for Vista 64 or Windows 7. Identified hardware: Processor: Intel mobile Core 2 Duo T7500 Chipset: Intel Mobile 965 Express Wifi: Intel Pro Wireless Drive Controller: Intel Matrix Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600M GT Bluetooth: Dell TrueMobile 355 + EDR Ricoh card reader I think anything else, the default Windows drivers will be sufficient. Let me know if you think I missed something thing please.

  • Why does this XSL fails to retrieve value from xml ?

    - by Pavitar
    Following is an extract of the XSL stylesheet that I have written. It says my '.xsl' is well formed but it somehow does not retrieve values from the xml,instead jus pastes the header and table headings. EDIT <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="2.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions"> <xsl:template match="/" > <html> <head> <title>GlenMark Pharma</title> </head> <h1 align="center"><font face="Monotype Corsiva" color="red">GlenMarkPharma</font></h1> <body> <table> <tbody> <tr> <th>ID</th> <th>ENAME</th> <th>Mobile</th> <th>EMAIL</th> <th>PWD</th> </tr> <xsl:for-each select="employees/employee"> <tr> <td><xsl:value-of select="@empID" /></td> <td><xsl:value-of select="name" /></td> <td><xsl:value-of select="mobile" /></td> <td><xsl:value-of select="email" /></td> <td><xsl:value-of select="pwd" /></td> </tr> </xsl:for-each> </tbody> </table> </body> </html> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> Here is my XML doc: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="MyfirstXsl.xsl"?> <!DOCTYPE employees SYSTEM "Mydtd.dtd"> <me:employees xmlns:me="[email protected]" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="[email protected] Mycomplex.xsd"> <me:employee empID="EMP101"> <me:name>Vicky</me:name> <me:mobile>9870582356</me:mobile> <me:email>[email protected]</me:email> <me:pwd>&defPWD;</me:pwd> </me:employee> </me:employees> I have also tried writing: <xsl:for-each select="employees/employee"> <tr> <td><xsl:value-of select="@empID" /></td> <td><xsl:value-of select="me:name" /></td> in the XSL since I have an alias to the namespace in my XML Doc.But it gives me an error of Invalid Pre-fix.I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

  • Example compilers

    - by saf
I'm searching for the source code of a compiler capable of creating Win32 programs from an input program in a programming language (It doesn't matter which, maybe the simpler the better) Yet I can't find anything right for me and huge compilers like GCC make me extremely confused as they have so many features that I don't know where to start. Is there an OpenSource Win32 micro-compiler for some programming language out there I could take a look at?

  • What does 'foo' really mean?

    - by Prakash
I hope this qualifies as a programming question, as in any programming tutorial, you eventually come across 'foo' in the code examples. (yeah, right?) what does 'foo' really mean? If it is meant to mean nothing, when did it begin to be used so? Cheers

  • What features would you like to see added to C++?

    - by George Edison
Are there any features you would like to see added to C++? Maybe... A programming construct An extra operator A built-in function you think would be useful I realize questions like this are frowned upon, but I think this one is a genuine programming question that can be answered and the answers will spawn valuable discussion. (And it's community wiki.) Here is one of mine: How come C++ has no exponent operator, like Python's **?

  • is c++ STL algorithms and containers same across platforms and performance?

    - by Abhilash M
After learning good amount of c++, i'm now into STL containers and algorithms template library, my major concerns are, 1) Is this library same across different platforms like MS, linux n other os? 2) will quality or efficiency of program c++ module decrease with more use of STL containers and algorithms, i think i can't customize it to all needs. 3) Is this template library good to use in linux system programming, kernel modules? 4) lastly can i use this in programming contests, because it relives a lot of coding and pressure off shoulders.

  • Is it a bad idea to make roaming profile share available offline?

    - by Bryan
This is regarding a Windows 2008 R2 domain. The Documents, Desktop, Application Data folders are all redirected to users' home directory (mapped as Z:). The users home directory is configured to be offline for mobile users. User profiles are configured as roaming, and located on a separate share (not mapped as a network drive), just accessed via an UNC path. Would it be a good or idea to make the roaming profile share available offline for mobile users using the caching option "All files and programs that users open from the share will be automatically available offline"?

  • Is 23,148,855,308,184,500 a magic number, or sheer chance?

    - by Roddy
News reports such as this one indicate that the above number may have arisen as a programming bug. A man in the United States popped out to his local petrol station to buy a pack of cigarettes - only to find his card charged $23,148,855,308,184,500. That is $23 quadrillion (£14 quadrillion) - many times the US national debt.* In hex it's $523DC2E199EBB4 which doesn't appear terribly interesting at first sight. Anyone have any thoughts about what programming error would have caused this?

  • What does Silverlight offer?

    - by Maurizio Reginelli
I'm working with C# and WPF and I would like to study something related to web programming. I already know HTML and CSS, and since I'm working with WPF, I am wondering if going into Silverlight is a good choice to start web developing. Can it be a substitute of server-side programming languages, like PHP or ASP .NET? What do you suggest? Thank you very much
