  • .Net Library for parsing source code files?

    Does anyone know of a good .NET library that allows me to parse source code files, but not only .NET source code files (like java, perl, ruby, etc)? I need programmatic access to the contents of various source code files (e.g. class/method /parameter names, types, etc.). Has anyone come across something like this? I know within .NET it is reasonably possible and there are some libraries out there, but I need that to be abstracted to more types of programming languages.

I'm just getting started with win32 API programming in C++ and I'm having trouble compiling the winnie tutorial (http://www.relisoft.com/win32/winnie.html) with MinGW.   • Receiving data with Winsock

    Right now, I'm programming the networking for my online game, and I'm not really sure what to do about receiving data. The problem is that I can't really guess the packet's size, so I thought of reading just 4 bytes from the packet and converting them to an int to know what's the packet's size. Then I'll just create a buffer in that size and receive the rest of the packet, is that a good idea? For your information, I'm using non-blocking i/o.

  • C++ vs Matlab vs Python as a main language for Computer Vision Research

    Hi all, Firstly, sorry for a somewhat long question but I think that many people are in the same situation as me and hopefully they can also gain some benefit from this. I'll be starting my PhD very soon which involves the fields of computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning. Currently, I'm using opencv (2.1) C++ interface and I especially like its powerful Mat class and the overloaded operations available for matrix and image operations and seamless transformations. I've also tried (and implemented many small vision projects) using opencv python interface (new bindings; opencv 2.1) and I really enjoy python's ability to integrate opencv, numpy, scipy and matplotlib. But recently, I went back to opencv C++ interface because I felt that the official python new bindings were not stable enough and no overloaded operations are available for matrices and images, not to mention the lack of machine learning modules and slow speeds in certain operations. I've also used Matlab extensively in the past and although I've used mex files and other means to speed up the program, I just felt that Matlab's performance was inadequate for real-time vision tasks, be it for fast prototyping or not. When the project becomes larger and larger, many tasks have to be re-written in C and compiled into Mex files increasingly and Matlab becomes nothing more than a glue language. Here comes the sub-questions: For carrying out research in these fields (machine learning, vision, pattern recognition), what is your main or ideal programming language for rapid prototyping of ideas and testing algorithms contained in papers? For computer vision research work, can you list down the pros and cons of using the following languages? C++ (with opencv + gsl + svmlib + other libraries) vs Matlab (with all its toolboxes) vs python (with the imcomplete opencv bindings + numpy + scipy + matplotlib). Are there computer vision PhD/postgrad students here who are using only C++ (with all its availabe libraries including opencv) without even needing to resort to Matlab or python? In other words, given the current existing computer vision or machine learning libraries, is C++ alone sufficient for fast prototyping of ideas? If you're currently using Java or C# for your research, can you list down the reasons why they should be used and how they compare to other languages in terms of available libraries? What is the de facto vision/machine learning programming language and its associated libraries used in your research group? Thanks in advance.   • HTTP Request from a PC to load the contents of a wap site

    When I try to load a wap site with PHP HTTP request from my PC, host of the web site recognizes that I'm sending the request from a PC and redirects me to their actual web site and I can't load the wap site. Is there a way to behave like a mobile browser and prevent this redirection? Although an answer regarding any programming language is ok, a php specific answer will be better.

    In Socket Programming, how will a Unix thread receive a Socket CLOSE event from a client if connection is closed? Are there any API's which will notify the unix thread about the CLOSE event received? As in Windows we have WSAEnumNetworkEvents API which gets the event notification for a specified socket descriptor. What will be the equivalent API used in the Unix socket programing?   • Does oneway declaration in Android .aidl guarantee that method will be called in a separate thread?

    I am designing a framework for a client/server application for Android phones. I am fairly new to both Java and Android (but not new to programming in general, or threaded programming in particular). Sometimes my server and client will be in the same process, and sometimes they will be in different processes, depending on the exact use case. The client and server interfaces look something like the following: IServer.aidl: package com.my.application; interface IServer { /** * Register client callback object */ void registerCallback( in IClient callbackObject ); /** * Do something and report back */ void doSomething( in String what ); . . . } IClient.aidl: package com.my.application; oneway interface IClient { /** * Receive an answer */ void reportBack( in String answer ); . . . } Now here is where it gets interesting. I can foresee use cases where the client calls IServer.doSomething(), which in turn calls IClient.reportBack(), and on the basis of what is reported back, IClient.reportBack() needs to issue another call to IClient.doSomething(). The issue here is that IServer.doSomething() will not, in general, be reentrant. That's OK, as long as IClient.reportBack() is always invoked in a new thread. In that case, I can make sure that the implementation of IServer.doSomething() is always synchronized appropriately so that the call from the new thread blocks until the first call returns. If everything works the way I think it does, then by declaring the IClient interface as oneway, I guarantee this to be the case. At least, I can't think of any way that the call from IServer.doSomething() to IClient.reportBack() can return immediately (what oneway is supposed to ensure), yet IClient.reportBack still be able to reinvoke IServer.doSomething recursively in the same thread. Either a new thread in IServer must be started, or else the old IServer thread can be re-used for the inner call to IServer.doSomething(), but only after the outer call to IServer.doSomething() has returned. So my question is, does everything work the way I think it does? The Android documentation hardly mentions oneway interfaces.

  • Nginx's speed, and how to replicate it [migrated]

    I'm interested in this from more than an academic standpoint rather than a practical standpoint; I don't plan on creating a production webserver to compete with nginx. What I'm wondering is how exactly nginx is so fast. The top google response for this is this thread, but it merely links to a cryptic slideshow and a general covering of different io strategies. All other results seem to simply describe how fast nginx is, rather then the reason. I tried building a simple erlang server to try to compete with nginx, but to no avail; nginx won out. All my server does is spawn a new process for each request, uses that process to read the file to a socket, then closes the file and kills the thread. It's not complicated, but given erlang's lightweight processes and underlying aio structure I thought it would compete, but nginx still wins out by a consistent 300 ms average under a heavy stress test. What is nginx doing that my simple server isn't? My first thought would be keeping files in main memory instead of tossing them between requests, but the filesystem cache does this already so I didn't think it would make that great of difference. Am I wrong? Or is there something else that I'm missing?

    I've started using Windows 7 under VirtualBox on an Ubuntu 10.10 host. I took about 6 snapshots over the course of setting up the VM from the Windows restore image that came with the computer. My installations were more or less limited to windows updates, antivirus, and the VB Guest Additions. I uninstalled much more than I installed. The VM was running for about 24 hours total. The snapshots increased in size at a worrisome rate, even when the machine was idle: the snapshot .vdi file for the period between 11:22 PM and 9:02 AM is 6 gigs in size; during that time very little happened. The other .vdi files are between 0.5 and 3 GB, most between 1 and 2 GB. The corresponding .sav files are between 0.5 and 1 GB. The Internet connection where I was doing this is limited to 30KB/s download, which, constantly saturated, works out to less than 3 GB per 24 hour period. Is this normal? Is there something that can be done to make snapshots more practical? update On starting up the VM again, I've noticed that mscorsvw is using significant processing time. Apparently this process [precompiles .NET assemblies]. This may have been going on during the period when I was taking snapshots, which might explain some of the snapshot size increase. I would be somewhat surprised to learn that this could be responsible for over 10 GB of additional disk usage, or that it would run for roughly 24 hours. Is this possible?
