  • Is there a faster method to match an arbitrary String to month name in Java

    Hello, I want to determine if a string is the name of a month and I want to do it relatively quickly. The function that is currently stuck in my brain is something like: boolean isaMonth( String str ) { String[] months = DateFormatSymbols.getInstance().getMonths(); String[] shortMonths = DateFormatSymbols.getInstance().getShortMonths(); int i; for( i = 0; i<months.length(); ++i;) { if( months[i].equals(str) ) return true; if( shortMonths[i].equals(str ) return true; } return false; } However, I will be processing lots of text, passed one string at a time to this function, and most of the time I will be getting the worst case of going through the entire loop and returning false. I saw another question that talked about a Regex to match a month name and a year which could be adapted for this situation. Would the Regex be faster? Is there any other solution that might be faster?

    hi, I'm reusing the same ArrayList in a for loop, and I use for loop results = new ArrayList<Integer>(); experts = new ArrayList<Integer>(); output = new ArrayList<String>(); .... to create new ones. I guess this is wrong, because I'm allocating new memory. Is this correct ? If yes, how can I empty them ? Added: another example I'm creating new variables each time I call this method. Is this good practice ? I mean to create new precision, relevantFound.. etc ?     I'm trying to match the username with a regex. Please don't suggest a split. USERNAME=geo Here's my code: String input = "USERNAME=geo"; Pattern pat = Pattern.compile("USERNAME=(\\w+)"); Matcher mat = pat.matcher(input); if(mat.find()) { System.out.println(mat.group()); } why doesn't it find geo in the group? I noticed that if I use the .group(1), it finds the username. However the group method contains USERNAME=geo. Why?

I need support for simple nested objects (as long as they don't create loops in the object graph). I tried to convert it to JSON, but DefaultPrettyPrinter is not HTML friendly.

But I also want to easily extends this frame work without changing the template. Now I have another class that inherits this abstract: @Stateless @LocalBean public class BasicUserBean<T extends BasicUser> extends AbstractBean<T> { private Class<T> user; public BasicUserBean() { super(user); // Error: cannot reference user before supertype contructor has been called. } My question is how can I make this to work?, I am trying to make the class BasicUserBean inheritable, so if I have class PersonBean which inherits BasicUserBean then I could set in the Generic the entity Person which also inherits the entity BasicUser. And it will end up being: @Stateless @LocalBean public class PersonBean extends BasicUserBean<Person> { public PersonBean() { super(Person.class); } ... I just want to inherit the basic functionality from BasicUserBean to all descendants, so I do not have to repeat the same code among all descendants. Thanks!.

I want to have a column (should be the first column) which simply shows the display row number (i.e. it is not tied to any data (or sorting) but is simply the row number on the screen starting at 1).     Hi, I'm trying to upload a file via URLConnection, but i need to read/write it as a binary file without any encoding changes. So i've tried to read byte[] array from FileInputStream, but now i have an issue. The PrintWriter object i use for outputing to the server does not allow me to do writer.write(content) (where content is of type byte[]). How can i fix this? Or is there another way to quickly copy binary data from a FileInputStream to a PrintWriter? Thank you

  • Relating text fields to check boxes in Java

    This program requires the user to login and request a database to access. The program then gets a connection object, searches through the database storing the column names into a vector for later use. The problem comes with implementing text fields to allow the user to search for specific values within the database. I can get the check boxes and text fields to appear using a gridlayout and add them to a panel. How do I relate the text fields to their appropriate check box? I've tried adding them to a vector, but then they can't also be added to the panel as well. I've searched for a way to name the text fields as the loop cycles through the column names, but it seems impossible to do without having them declared ahead of time. This can't be done either, as it's impossible to determine the attributes that the user will request. I just need to be able to know the names of the text fields so I can test to see if the user entered information and perform the necessary logic. Let me know if you have to see the rest of the code to give an answer, but hopefully you get the general idea of what I'm trying to accomplish.     I have a simple UDP server that creates a new thread for processing incoming data. While testing it by sending about 100 packets/second I notice that it's memory usage continues to increase. Is there any leak evident from my code below?     Hi again, I have the following tag included in my HTML which causes the JEditorPane not to show the HTML output. <META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> Not so much a big deal but anyone know why this would happen? Cannot find too much documentation on this - best I came up with was someone having a go a few years ago to see what was supported on retro virus site. At the minute I'm doing a simple find replace on the string which is not good - are there any better ways? I've seen a lot of people saying that RegEx is no good.     When I run the following program: public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception { byte str[] = {(byte)0xEC, (byte)0x96, (byte)0xB4}; String s = new String(str, "UTF-8"); } on Linux and inspect the value of s in jdb, I correctly get: s = "ì–´" on Windows, I incorrectly get: s = "?" My byte sequence is a valid UTF-8 character in Korean, why would it be producing two very different results?
