From the birthday paradox we know that we can expect to find a matching entry, after performing about 2^(n/2) hash evaluations. Does the above mean 2^(n/2) iterations through the above entire loop (i.e. 2^(n/2) returns to step 1), OR does it mean 2^(n/2) comparisons to individual items already in L.

• C# start a static thread

  I have a Queue of items I want to process in a thread, and any instance of a class can add items to the Queue to be processed. My idea for doing this is to have a static Thread in the class that processes the items, the only problem is that I don't know where to start this thread, since I can't start it in its initialization. Is there a way I can start a static thread? Or should I be changing the architecture completely?

  In my django app I display a list of elements (friends name) thanks to a loop: <div> {% for friend in group %} <p>{{ friend.name }} <p> {% endfor %} </div> I would like to create a search box on the top of my list in order to be able to find only the friends the user wants. I would like the search bar does not need to click to send the request (an example is the Airtime searchbox on top of the facebook friends list). • C#: reading in a text file more 'intelligently'

  I have a text file which contains a list of alphabetically organized variables with their variable numbers next to them formatted something like follows: aabcdef 208 abcdefghijk 1191 bcdefga 7 cdefgab 12 defgab 100 efgabcd 999 fgabc 86 gabcdef 9 h 11 ijk 80 ... ... I would like to read each text as a string and keep it's designated id# something like read "aabcdef" and store it into an array at spot 208. The 2 issues I'm running into are: I've never read from file in C#, is there a way to read, say from start of line to whitespace as a string? and then the next string as an int until the end of line? given the nature and size of these files I do not know the highest ID value of each file (not all numbers are used so some files could house a number like 3000, but only actually list 200 variables) So how could I make a flexible way to store these variables when I don't know how big the array/list/stack/etc.. would need to be.

  Is it possible using Linq to create a group where items fall into more than one group?   Hi all, I've seen this question asked in a couple other contexts on SO, but I thought it would be worth asking again for my particular case. I'm trying to create some re-usable CSS classes for more consistency and less clutter on my site, and I'm stuck on trying to standardize one thing I use frequently. I have a container div that I don't want to set the height for (because it will vary depending on where on the site it is), and inside it is a header div, and then an unordered list of items, all with CSS applied to them. It looks a lot like this: I want the unordered list to take up the remaining room in the container div, knowing that the header div is 18px tall. I just don't know how to specify the list's height as "the result of 100% minus 18px". Does anyone have any advice in this situation? Thanks very much.

  Some background: I have a Dovecot/Postfix setup to handle email for a few domains. We have imap and smtp setup on various devices (Macs, iPhones, PCs, etc) and it works no problem. • Hudson on debian lenny

  Hello, I installed Hudson deamon on one server (running on debian lenny testing) some time ago. All was working until I perform an upgrade. At this time Hudson isn't accessible at port 8080 (which is the default port used). I have looked for iptables problems, however port 8080 is open in INPUT and OUTPUT. Configuration file in /etc/default/hudson seems okay, I haven't touch it. And if I do a ps aux | grep hudson, hudson deamon is running.   I've got an old Cisco 3500 XL, and it seems to have hardware issues. I've loaded the latest IOS and cleared all config. Does anyone have any experience fixing the switch core? I'm a reasonably competent SMD solderer, can I replace/reflow some chips? I've checked the power supply voltages and it's all within tolerance, and no visible signs of any component damage. Some chips are hot to the touch. I understand that these were EOL as of 2007, but should have a lifetime warranty for the electronics. I don't have a Cisco support contract, so I can't file a ticket. What should I do?   A user was instructed by their software support to upgrade a program and install SQLExpress as part of the installation process. Since that time, the service has been able to start, citing error 17053, which appears to be an authentication issue. • Proliant server will not accept new hard disks in RAID 1+0?

  I have a HP ProLiant DL380 G5, I have two logical drives configured with RAID. I have one logical drive RAID 1+0 with two 72 gb 10k sas 1 port spare no 376597-001. I had one hard disk fail and ordered a replacement. The configuration utility showed error and would not rebuild the RAID. I presumed a hard disk fault and ordered a replacement again. In the mean time I put the original failed disk back in the server and this started rebuilding. Currently shows ok status however in the log I can see hardware errors. The new disk has come and I again have the same problem of not accepting the hard disk. I have updated the P400 controller with the latest firmware 7.24 , but still no luck. The only difference I can see is the original drive has firmware 0103 (same as the RAID drive) and the new one has HPD2. Any advice would be appreciated.
