• How are property assignment expressions handled in C#?

- by Serious
In C# you can use a property as both an lrvalue and rvalue at the same time like this : int n = N = 1; Here is a complete C# sample : class Test { static int n; static int N { get { System.Console.WriteLine("get"); return n; } set { System.Console.WriteLine("set"); n = value; } } static void Main() { int n = N = 1; System.Console.WriteLine("{0}/{1}", n, N); } } You can't do that in C++/CLI as the resulting type of the assignment expression "N = 1" is void. EDIT: here is a C++/CLI sample that shows this : ref class A { public: static property int N; }; int main() { int n = A::N = 1; System::Console::WriteLine("{0}/{1}", n, A::N); } So what's the magic behind C# syntax allowing a void-expression to be used as a rvalue ? Is this special treatment only available for properties or do you know other C# tricks like this ?

• help on ejb stateless datagram and message driven beans

- by Kemmal
i have a client thats sending a message to the ejbserver using UDP, i want the server(stateless bean) to echo back this message to the client but i cant seem to do this. or can i implement the same logic by using JMS? please help and enlighten. this is just a test, in the end i want a midp to be sending the message to the ejb using datagrams. here is my code. @Stateless public class SessionFacadeBean implements SessionFacadeRemote { public SessionFacadeBean() { } public static void main(String[] args) { DatagramSocket aSocket = null; byte[] buffer = null; try { while(true) { DatagramPacket request = new DatagramPacket(buffer, buffer.length); aSocket.receive(request); DatagramPacket reply = new DatagramPacket(request.getData(), request.getLength(), request.getAddress(), request.getPort()); aSocket.send(reply); } } catch (SocketException e) { System.out.println("Socket: " + e.getMessage()); } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println("IO: " + e.getMessage()); } finally { if(aSocket != null) aSocket.close(); } } } and the client: public static void main(String[] args) { DatagramSocket aSocket = null; try { aSocket = new DatagramSocket(); byte [] m = "Test message!".getBytes(); InetAddress aHost = InetAddress.getByName("localhost"); int serverPort = 6789; DatagramPacket request = new DatagramPacket(m, m.length, aHost, serverPort); aSocket.send(request); byte[] buffer = new byte[1000]; DatagramPacket reply = new DatagramPacket(buffer, buffer.length); aSocket.receive(reply); System.out.println("Reply: " + new String(reply.getData())); } catch (SocketException e) { System.out.println("Socket: " + e.getMessage()); } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println("IO: " + e.getMessage()); } finally { if(aSocket != null) aSocket.close(); } } please help.

• Why would a variable in Scala code mysteriously become null?

- by Alex R
I've isolated the problem down to this: Predef.println("the value of argv1 here is " + argv(1)); var n: $ = undef; n = argv(1); Predef.println("the value of argv1 here is " + argv(1)); Predef.println("the value of n here is " + n); Predef.println("the class of n here is " + n.getClass); Here's the definition of $: class $ { println("constructed a new $ of type: " + this.getClass); def value: $ = this; def toValue: Value = { new ConstStringValue(this.toString()) }; def -(sym: Symbol): $ = { println("looked up: " + sym); this } def -(sym: $): $ = { println("looked up: " + sym); this } def update(sym: Symbol, any: Any) { println("update called: " + sym + "=" + any); } def apply(sym: Symbol) = { this } def apply(obj: $) = { this } def apply() = { this } def +(o:$) = this.toValue.div(o.toValue) def *(o:$) = this.toValue.mul(o.toValue) def >(o:$) = this.toValue.gt(o.toValue) def <(o:$) = this.toValue.lt(o.toValue) def ++() = { this } def -=(o:$) = { this } } When run, the code prints: the value of argv1 here is 10 the value of argv1 here is 10 the value of n here is null java.lang.NullPointerException at test_1_php$.include(_tmp.scala:149) at php.script.main(php.scala:57) at test_1_php.main(_tmp.scala) [...] Why would n mysteriously lose its value (or fail to take one on)?

• Using IoC and Dependency Injection, how do I wrap an existing implementation with a new layer of imp

- by Dividnedium
I'm trying to figure out how this would be done in practice, so as not to violate the Open Closed principle. Say I have a class called HttpFileDownloader that has one function that takes a url and downloads a file returning the html as a string. This class implements an IFileDownloader interface which just has the one function. So all over my code I have references to the IFileDownloader interface and I have my IoC container returning an instance of HttpFileDownloader whenever an IFileDownloader is Resolved. Then after some use, it becomes clear that occasionally the server is too busy at the time and an exception is thrown. I decide that to get around this, I'm going to auto-retry 3 times if I get an exception, and wait 5 seconds in between each retry. So I create HttpFileDownloaderRetrier which has one function that uses HttpFileDownloader in a for loop with max 3 loops, and a 5 second wait between each loop. So that I can test the "retry" and "wait" abilities of the HttpFileDownloadRetrier I have the HttpFileDownloader dependency injected by having the HttpFileDownloaderRetrier constructor take an IFileDownloader. So now I want all Resolving of IFileDownloader to return the HttpFileDownloaderRetrier. But if I do that, then HttpFileDownloadRetrier's IFileDownloader dependency will get an instance of itself and not of HttpFileDownloader. So I can see that I could create a new interface for HttpFileDownloader called IFileDownloaderNoRetry, and change HttpFileDownloader to implement that. But that means I'm changing HttpFileDownloader, which violates Open Closed. Or I could implement a new interface for HttpFileDownloaderRetrier called IFileDownloaderRetrier, and then change all my other code to refer to that instead of IFileDownloader. But again, I'm now violating Open Closed in all my other code. So what am I missing here? How do I wrap an existing implementation (downloading) with a new layer of implementation (retrying and waiting) without changing existing code? Here's some code if it helps: public interface IFileDownloader { string Download(string url); } public class HttpFileDownloader : IFileDownloader { public string Download(string url) { //Cut for brevity - downloads file here returns as string return html; } } public class HttpFileDownloaderRetrier : IFileDownloader { IFileDownloader fileDownloader; public HttpFileDownloaderRetrier(IFileDownloader fileDownloader) { this.fileDownloader = fileDownloader; } public string Download(string url) { Exception lastException = null; //try 3 shots of pulling a bad URL. And wait 5 seconds after each failed attempt. for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++) { try { fileDownloader.Download(url); } catch (Exception ex) { lastException = ex; } Utilities.WaitForXSeconds(5); } throw lastException; } }

• What's wrong with my code? (pdcurses/getmaxyx)

- by flarn2006
It gives me an access violation on the getmaxyx line (second line in the main function) and also gives me these two warnings: LINK : warning LNK4049: locally defined symbol "_stdscr" imported LINK : warning LNK4049: locally defined symbol "_SP" imported Yes, it's the same code as in another question I asked, it's just that I'm making it more clear. And yes, I have written programs with pdcurses before with no problems. #include <time.h> #include <curses.h> #include "Ball.h" #include "Paddle.h" #include "config.h" int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { int maxY, maxX; getmaxyx(stdscr, maxY, maxX); Paddle *paddleLeft = new Paddle(0, KEY_L_UP, KEY_L_DOWN); Paddle *paddleRight = new Paddle(maxX, KEY_R_UP, KEY_R_DOWN); Ball *ball = new Ball(paddleLeft, paddleRight); int key = 0; initscr(); cbreak(); noecho(); curs_set(0); while (key != KEY_QUIT) { key = getch(); paddleLeft->OnKeyPress(key); paddleRight->OnKeyPress(key); } endwin(); return 0; }

• Concept of GUI's - Centralized or decentralized

- by wvd
Hello all, Since a few months I've been learning Erlang, and now it was time to do some basic GUI. After some quick research I saw there was an interesting library called 'wxi' (based on Fudgets of Haskell) which uses a different approach on GUI's. No central loop, every widget processes it's own events and handles it's own data. What do you guys think about this? It looks like it kind of can be efficient in languages such as Erlang, and it's an interesting approach. William van Doorn

• Pause and resume thread drawing to SurfaceView

- by fhucho
I am developing a chess game for Android (http://androidchess.appspot.com), using SurfaceView for the chessboard. I have a drawing Thread, that draws the chessboard in a loop. The problem is that when there are no active animations (this is more that 90% of time), it makes no sense to waste CPU and battery for drawing. How should I solve this? Maybe somehow pausing and resuming the drawing Thread?

• Loading Native library to external Package in Eclipse not working. is it a Bug?

- by TacB0sS
I was about to report a but to Eclipse, but I was thinking to give this a chance here first: If I add an external package, the application cannot find the referenced native library, except in the case specified at the below: If my workspace consists of a single project, and I import an external package 'EX_package.jar' from a folder outside of the project folder, I can assign a folder to the native library location via: mouse over package - right click - properties - Native Library - Enter your folder. This does not work. In runtime the application does not load the library, System.mapLibraryName(Path) also does not work. Further more, if I create a User Library, and add the package to it and define a folder for the native library it still does not. If it works for you then I have a major bug since it does not work on my computer I test this in any combination I could think of, including adding the path to the windows PATH parameter, and so many other ways I can't even start to remember, nothing worked, I played with this for hours and had a colleague try to assist me, but we both came up empty. Further more, if I have a main project that is dependent on few other projects in my workspace, and they all need to use the same 'EX_package.jar' I MUST supply a HARD COPY INTO EACH OF THEM, it will ONLY (I can't stress the ONLYNESS, I got freaked out by this) work if I have a hard copy of the package in ALL of the project folders that the main project has a dependency on, and ONLY if I configure the Native path in each of them!! This also didn't do the trick. please tell me there is a solution to this, this drives me nuts... Thanks, Adam Zehavi.

• User entered value validation and level of error catching

- by Terry
May I ask should the error catching code be placed at the lowest level or at the top as I am not sure what is the best practice? I prefer placing at the bottom, example a, as Example a public static void Main(string[] args) { string operation = args[0]; int value = Convert.ToInt32(args[1]); if (operation == "date") { DoDate(value); } else if (operation == "month") { DoMonth(value); } } public static void DoMonth(int month) { if (month < 1 || month > 12) { throw new Exception(""); } } public static void DoDate(int date) { if (date < 1 || date > 31) { throw new Exception(""); } } or example b public static void Main(string[] args) { string operation = args[0]; int value = Convert.ToInt32(args[1]); if (operation == "date" && (date < 1 || date > 12)) { throw new Exception(""); } else if (operation == "month" && (month < 1 || month > 31)) { throw new Exception(""); } if (operation == "date") { DoDate(value); } else if (operation == "month") { DoMonth(value); } } public static void DoMonth(int month) { } public static void DoDate(int date) { }

• FILE* issue PPU side code

- by Cristina
We are working on a homework on CELL programming for college and their feedback response to our questions is kinda slow, thought i can get some faster answers here. I have a PPU side code which tries to open a file passed down through char* argv[], however this doesn't work it cannot make the assignment of the pointer, i get a NULL. Now my first idea was that the file isn't in the correct directory and i copied in every possible and logical place, my second idea is that maybe the PPU wants this pointer in its LS area, but i can't deduce if that's the bug or not. So... My question is what am i doing wrong? I am working with a Fedora 7 SDK Cell, with Eclipse as an IDE. Maybe my argument setup is wrong tho he gets the name of the file correctly. Code on request: images_t *read_bin_data(char *name) { FILE *file; images_t *img; uint32_t *buffer; uint8_t buf; unsigned long fileLen; unsigned long i; //Open file file = (FILE*)malloc(sizeof(FILE)); file = fopen(name, "rb"); printf("[Debug]Opening file %s\n",name); if (!file) { fprintf(stderr, "Unable to open file %s", name); return NULL; } //....... } Main launch: int main(int argc,char* argv[]) { int i,img_width; int modif_this[4] __attribute__ ((aligned(16))) = {1,2,3,4}; images_t *faces, *nonfaces; spe_context_ptr_t ctxs[SPU_THREADS]; pthread_t threads[SPU_THREADS]; thread_arg_t arg[SPU_THREADS]; //intializare img_width img_width = atoi(argv[1]); printf("[Debug]Img size is %i\n",img_width); faces = read_bin_data(argv[3]); //....... } Thanks for the help.

• Highlight overlapping text in JQuery

- by Jasie
I've got this plain HTML: "Many things are in my room: a bed, a desk, and a computer." And these phrases: "things are" "are in my room" "room: a bed" In JQuery, is there some way to loop through the phrase list, and highlight the phrases as they appear in the text, and have the overlap delineated by color, or border, etc? I know there are simple highlighters but that won't do the trick. Maybe something with overlaying opacities? Thanks!

• Potential g++ template bug?

- by Evan Teran
I've encountered some code which I think should compile, but doesn't. So I'm hoping some of the local standards experts here at SO can help :-). I basically have some code which resembles this: #include <iostream> template <class T = int> class A { public: class U { }; public: U f() const { return U(); } }; // test either the work around or the code I want... #ifndef USE_FIX template <class T> bool operator==(const typename A<T>::U &x, int y) { return true; } #else typedef A<int> AI; bool operator==(const AI::U &x, int y) { return true; } #endif int main() { A<int> a; std::cout << (a.f() == 1) << std::endl; } So, to describe what is going on here. I have a class template (A) which has an internal class (U) and at least one member function which can return an instance of that internal class (f()). Then I am attempting to create an operator== function which compares this internal type to some other type (in this case an int, but it doesn't seem to matter). When USE_FIX is not defined I get the following error: test.cc: In function 'int main()': test.cc:27:25: error: no match for 'operator==' in 'a.A<T>::f [with T = int]() == 1' Which seems odd, because I am clearly (I think) defining a templated operator== which should cover this, in fact if I just do a little of the work for the compiler (enable USE_FIX), then I no longer get an error. Unfortunately, the "fix" doesn't work generically, only for a specific instantiation of the template. Is this supposed to work as I expected? Or is this simply not allowed? BTW: if it matters I am using gcc 4.5.2.

• How efficient is PHP's substr?

- by zildjohn01
I'm writing a parser in PHP which must be able to handle large in-memory strings, so this is a somewhat important issue. (ie, please don't "premature optimize" flame me, please) How does the substr function work? Does it make a second copy of the string data in memory, or does it reference the original? Should I worry about calling, for example, $str = substr($str, 1); in a loop?

• Unexpected output from Bubblesort program with MSVC vs TCC

- by Sujith S Pillai
One of my friends sent this code to me, saying it doesn't work as expected: #include<stdio.h> void main() { int a [10] ={23, 100, 20, 30, 25, 45, 40, 55, 43, 42}; int sizeOfInput = sizeof(a)/sizeof(int); int b, outer, inner, c; printf("Size is : %d \n", sizeOfInput); printf("Values before bubble sort are : \n"); for ( b = 0; b < sizeOfInput; b++) printf("%d\n", a[b]); printf("End of values before bubble sort... \n"); for ( outer = sizeOfInput; outer > 0; outer-- ) { for ( inner = 0 ; inner < outer ; inner++) { printf ( "Comparing positions: %d and %d\n",inner,inner+1); if ( a[inner] > a[inner + 1] ) { int tmp = a[inner]; a[inner] = a [inner+1]; a[inner+1] = tmp; } } printf ( "Bubble sort total array size after inner loop is %d :\n",sizeOfInput); printf ( "Bubble sort sizeOfInput after inner loop is %d :\n",sizeOfInput); } printf ( "Bubble sort total array size at the end is %d :\n",sizeOfInput); for ( c = 0 ; c < sizeOfInput; c++) printf("Element: %d\n", a[c]); } I am using Micosoft Visual Studio Command Line Tool for compiling this on a Windows XP machine. cl /EHsc bubblesort01.c My friend gets the correct output on a dinosaur machine (code is compiled using TCC there). My output is unexpected. The array mysteriously grows in size, in between. If you change the code so that the variable sizeOfInput is changed to sizeOfInputt, it gives the expected results! A search done at Microsoft Visual C++ Developer Center doesn't give any results for "sizeOfInput". I am not a C/C++ expert, and am curious to find out why this happens - any C/C++ experts who can "shed some light" on this? Unrelated note: I seriously thought of rewriting the whole code to use quicksort or merge sort before posting it here. But, after all, it is not Stooge sort... Edit: I know the code is not correct (it reads beyond the last element), but I am curious why the variable name makes a difference.

• How to read a file byte by byte in Python?

- by zaplec
Hi, I'm trying to read a file byte by byte, but I'm not sure how to do that. I'm trying to do it like that: file = open(filename, 'rb') while 1: byte = file.read(8) # Do something... So does that make the variable byte to contain 8 next bits at the beginning of every loop? It doesn't matter what those bytes really are. The only thing that matters is that I need to read a file in 8-bit stacks.

At first I have taken some string in which I am trying to save the input values of textboxs and there is a combo box, I am trying to save the input value of the combo box to database, but this following code is unable to do that !!! what is the prob please help me. private void OK_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { string sTxtcmpnyName = ""; string sTxtcmpnyAdd = ""; string sPhoneno = ""; string sTxtFax = ""; string sPanNo = ""; string sTxtTin = ""; string sTax = ""; string sAccYr = ""; string sComboSt = ""; foreach (Control c in this.Controls) ////*Adding Validation to the textbox.*// // Here the control is entered into GroupBox Grpcmp where c is denoting the name of the control into the groupbox. { // c1 is another control which denotes the textboxes under the GroupBox Grpcmp. foreach (Control c1 in c.Controls) { /////Now this following code snippets reperesents that the name of the company should not be blank. if (c1 is TextBox == true) // simpler that what you've done there { TextBox temp = (TextBox)c1; //The control is entering into Txtcompany. if (temp.Name == "Txtcompanyname") { //Condition checking is the TextBox is empty or Null then the following message will be shown. if ((temp.Text == "") || (temp.Text == "NULL")) { MessageBox.Show("Company Name should not be Blank"); } sTxtcmpnyName = temp.Text; } else if (c1.Name == "TxtcompanyAddress") { sTxtcmpnyAdd = c1.Text; } else if (c1.Name == "Txtphoneno") { sPhoneno = c1.Text; } else if (c1.Name == "TxtFax ") { sTxtFax = c1.Text; } else if (c1.Name == "Txtpanno") { sPanNo = c1.Text; } else if (c1.Name == "TxtTin") { sTxtTin = c1.Text; } else if (c1.Name == "Txtservicetax") { sTax = c1.Text; } //Now I am converting the TxtAcYr into Date format. //For this purpose two conditions are checked first. //First If the TextBox TxtAcYr is Null or empty it will show the message to enter the accountyear!! //Second If the length of the TextBox TxtAcYr is less than 10, it will again generate a message The date format should be in DD/MM/YYYY // Then the value of the use input will be picked using a For loop. if (c1.Name == "TxtAcYr") { sAccYr = c1.Text; //Here a string is taken named as yearlength and the value of the TxtAcYr is assigned to it by using control c1. //Condition Checking If the TextBox TxtAcYr is Null or empty it will show the message to enter the accountyear!! if ((c1.Text == "") || (c1.Text == "NULL")) { MessageBox.Show("Account Year should be entered!!"); } //Condition 2 is checking. Here the length of the string yearlength is whether equals to 10 or not is checked. //Because there are total 10 characters in Date Format along with special character. else // MessageBox.Show(yearlength.Length.ToString()); if (sAccYr.Length != 10) { MessageBox.Show("The Data Format DD-MM-YYYY"); } //Now the value of user will be picked by using the code snippets. else { //A string named as JK is taken for further use. String JK = ""; //This following loop is initiated to pick the user input. //The loop will check wheather the value of i is less than the length of string yearlength or not. //If Yes then it will go further. for (int i = 0; i < sAccYr.Length; i++) { //This condition is checking special characters. //The positions of special characters(Here '-') are placed at 2nd and 5th numbers. //So, the value of i can not be equals to 2 && 5. if ((i != 2) && (i != 5)) { //The new of value of year length i is assinged to the variable JK. JK = JK + sAccYr[i]; } //If the value of i is equals to 1, then enter the following. if (i == 1) { //*Should add the function of TOInt32* // If ToInt32(JK)>= the maximum length of days of a month then the following alert message will be shown. if (Convert.ToInt32(JK) >= 32) { MessageBox.Show("The Data Format DD-MM-YYYY"); } //**Comment should be added.** JK = ""; } else //If the value of i is equals to 4, then enter the following. if (i == 4) { //*Should add the function of TOInt32* // If ToInt32(JK)>= the maximum length of month then the following alert message will be shown. if (Convert.ToInt32(JK) >= 13) { MessageBox.Show("The Data Format DD-MM-YYYY"); } JK = ""; } } } } } else if (c1.Name == "state_cmb") { //sTxttate = c1.Text.ToString(); sComboSt = c1.Text; MessageBox.Show(c1.Text); } } } //////DATABASE CONNECTION///// try { SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(); SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(); conn.ConnectionString = ("Data Source =192.168.0.2 ;database= Mee_Company; Persist Security Info =true; User ID =sa;Password = soso654321@"); conn.Open(); cmd.CommandText = ("INSERT INTO CompanyMaster(CompanyName,Address,State,Phone,Fax,PAN,TIN,STAX,AccountsYear)values('" + sTxtcmpnyName + "','" + sTxtcmpnyAdd + "','" + sComboSt + "','" + sPhoneno + "','" + sTxtFax + "','" + sPanNo + "','" + sTxtTin + "','" + sTax + "','" + sAccYr + "')"); //('" + sTxtcmpnyName + "', '" + TxtcompanyAddress.Text + "', '" + Txtphoneno.Text + "', '" + TxtFax.Text + "', '" + Txtservicetax.Text + "','" + TxtAcYr.Text + "')"); cmd.Connection = conn; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); conn.Close(); //cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue } catch (Exception ee) { MessageBox.Show(ee.ToString()); } } //An event is created here so that when the user will click on the Cancel Button, the Form will be closed. private void BtmCancle_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { //this means the form. this.Close(); } //Another Event is created here named as TxtAcYr_KeyPress. //It is for making the TextBox TxtAcYr only allowance of numeric input along with special character '-'. private void TxtAcYr_KeyPress(object sender, KeyPressEventArgs e) { //If the input is number or '-' is checked //And also the backspace and delete option is enabled here. if (char.IsNumber(e.KeyChar) || e.KeyChar == (char)Keys.Back || e.KeyChar == (char)Keys.Delete || e.KeyChar == '-') { e.Handled = false; //ok } else { e.Handled = true; //not ok } }
