• Choosing Technology To Include In Software Design

  How many of us have been forced to select one technology over another when designing a new system? What factors do we and should we consider? How can we ensure the correct business decision is made? When faced with this type of decision it is important to gather as much information possible regarding each technology being considered as well as the project itself. Additionally, I tend to delay my decision about the technology until it is ultimately necessary to be made. The reason why I tend to delay such an important design decision is due to the fact that as the project progresses requirements and other factors can alter a decision for selecting the best technology for a project. Important factors to consider when making technology decisions: Time to Implement and Maintain Total Cost of Technology (including Implementation and maintenance) Adaptability of Technology Implementation Team’s Skill Sets Complexity of Technology (including Implementation and maintenance) orecasted Return On Investment (ROI) Forecasted Profit on Investment (POI) Of the factors to consider the ROI and POI weigh the heaviest because the take in to consideration the other factors when calculating the profitability and return on investments.For a real world example let us consider developing a web based lead management system for a new company. This system can either be hosted on Microsoft Windows based web server or on a Linux based web server. • How do I ensure my Apple keyboard connects on boot?

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop and have an Apple wireless keyboard which pairs fine. Every time I turn my computer off and back on again my keyboard stops working. I have to use the keyboard on my laptop to log in. Once I've logged in, in order to get the wireless keyboard to work, I need disconnect and reconnect it by: Clicking on the Bluetooth icon, select Apple Wireless Keyboard from the drop down menu, then click on Disconnect. Clicking on the Bluetooth icon, select Apple Wireless Keyboard from the drop down menu, then click on Connect. • Unity does not load when selecting Xorg open source radeon driver

  When I select the X.org Radeon open source driver, Unity does not load. However, when I select the Proprietary AMD Driver from the official Ubuntu repository, Unity does load. Why is Unity doing this? I had no problems with switching between these drivers in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. This started happening when I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10. Before I ever installed the propriatery AMD driver, the X.org driver loaded Unity fine, but very sluggishly. I downloaded the AMD driver from their official website and installed that first and that is what started this problem. I removed that driver and went back to X.org and X.org didn't load Unity either. Then using Synaptic, I installed the AMD driver from the Ubuntu repositories and thats what I'm using now. I'm very confused why that downloaded AMD driver would effect X.org. I have a AMD Radeon HD 6620G. It's integrated graphics on my AMD A8-3500M APU (Accelerated Processing Unit as AMD advertises it).

• Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance! EDIT Temporary solution is this file: http://www.andrewpatton.com/countrylist.csv It contains a list of countries including various other info, like the short country name, the same name that's used for the flag images. • Ubuntu 12.10 ATI Driver 12.11 fails after compiz and xorg update

  I updated my system via the package manager from Unity and next restart was just blackness. After being here: http://linux.hootip.com/amd-catalyst-12-11-beta-fix-and-installation-the-drivers-on-ubuntu-12-11/ I had the Catalyst 12.11 Beta driver installed. I checked my /var/log/apt/history.log and the update I received was of compiz and xorg packages. I tried to get latest release info, but all I get from their pages are commit info; I can't tell what was n the package update I got served. Anyone knows what was in the latest xorg/compiz release that broke the driver? Which driver should I use now? For completeness this is how I got the system back to boot (probably lame and not elegant): Boot with GRUB selection "More Ubuntu options (or sth like that), From secondary screen select 3.5.0-19 with boot options, When system prompts on stuff you'd like to do, select "root" - Drop to root shell, There: # mount -o remount,rw / # mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failed # /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # reboot This got be back on my feet.

  I have this DVB+Analog usb tv tuner Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502]. This used to work under ubuntu 10.04 LTS. But in 12.04 there seems to be a problem. I have linux-firmware-nonfree and ivtv-utils installed. I am running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64 bit with all updates installed and the default unity environment. • Why the R# Method Group Refactoring is Evil

  The refactoring I’m talking about is recommended by resharper when it sees a lambda that consists entirely of a method call that is passed the object that is the parameter to the lambda. Here is an example: public class IWishIWasAScriptingLanguage { public void SoIWouldntNeedAllThisJunk() { (new List<int> {1, 2, 3, 4}).Select(n => IsEven(n)); } private bool IsEven(int number) { return number%2 == 0; } } When resharper gets to n => IsEven(n) it underlines the lambda with a green squiggly telling me that the code can be replaced with a method group. If I apply the refactoring the code becomes: public class IWishIWasAScriptingLanguage { public void SoIWouldntNeedAllThisJunk() { (new List<int> {1, 2, 3, 4}).Select(IsEven); } private bool IsEven(int number) { return number%2 == 0; } } The method group syntax implies that the lambda’s parameter is the same as the IsEven method’s parameter. So a readable, explicit syntax has been replaced with an obfuscated, implicit syntax. That is why the method group refactoring is evil.

I should be able to choose between different org first. Afterwards i want to choose which year to enter data into Ft for. I only want to be presented with a list of Years according to the entries in the Org_Year table, where org matches my selection in the dropdown above. The query to populate the select box (Org_year_Box) is: SELECT Org_Year FROM Org_Year WHERE Org_Name_ID=Organisation_Name_ID.value; I't doesn't return the Years for the given Org_id when using the above query. But if i replace "Organisation_Name_ID.value" with the actual value ie. "2" it returns the correct years. How to do?

  Hi, I've just built a new machine with a Core i5-760 CPU. Max speed is 2.80GHz (turbo mode notwithstanding). I've also done a vanilla install of Ubuntu 10.10. I've added the cpufreq-selector applet to the top panel, and its menus only allow me to select up to 2.39GHz.   I have a table with col1 id int, col2 as varchar (comma separated values) and column 3 for assigning group to them. Table looks like col1 col2 group .............................. 1 2,3,4 2 5,6 3 1,2,5 4 7,8 5 11,3 6 22,8 This is only the sample of real data, now I have to assign a group no to them in such a way that output looks like col1 col2 group .............................. 1 2,3,4 1 2 5,6 1 3 1,2,5 1 4 7,8 2 5 11,3 1 6 22,8 2 The logic for assigning group no is that every similar comma separated value of string in col2 have to be same group no as every where in col2 where '2' is there it has to be same group no but the complication is that 2,3,4 are together so they all three int value if found in any where in col2 will be assigned same group. The major part is 2,3,4 and 1,2,5 both in col2 have 2 so all int 1,2,3,4,5 have to assign same group no. Tried store procedure with match against on col2 but not getting desired result Most imp (I can't use normalization, because I can't afford to make new table from my original table which have millions of records), even normalization is not helpful in my context. For example, hiding grid columns is now as easy as a left-mouse click. In earlier releases, users could click on the ‘Customize Grid’ link but still had to do several more clicks to hide or show a column . The following example shows how easy this new feature is to use. First, right-mouse click on the column you want to hide; for example the ‘Long Address’ column. The column is now hidden. Second, right-mouse over on any of the columns to show the ‘Unhide’ option. After you select ‘Unhide’, the hidden column is shown. You can then select the column to show, or unhide, the column. I have windows 7 64 bit, and currently, to switch from the headset to my spakers (or vice versa) without unplugging the headset, i have to go thru this steps: right click on the sound icon select "sounds" select the "Playback" tab right click headset and hit enable right click speakers and hit disable same steps when wanting to switch back I have to disable the devices, because not all of the programs which are outputting sound will switch immediately if I just set either device to default. I am looking for this to be a single action (either a batch script or a windows shortcut to some action with parameters?) Thanks!

• Can't run Ubuntu from disc

  When I place the boot CD in my CD drive and boot from it, I get the Ubuntu menu. I have these options Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer Install Ubuntu Check disc for defects Test memory Boot from first hard disk I can use the cursor keys to select them, and I can push F1 for help etc. However, I can not select an option. I've highlighted the first and tried enter, space bar etc. I do have a KVM, so I plugged in a 2nd USB keyboard and tried it but no go either. I can push escape and then got to the prompt. Am I doing something wrong?

  I love the fact that tree and list controls in Windows allows incremental searches. Just select a starting point, and type, and the control will select the best matching node for you. This works in SSMS, but there's an annoying problem, especially so in the table node. SSMS prefixes all table names with the schema name and a dot. To make an incremental search here, I have to type 'dbo.', followed by whatever I'm searching for. Is there an option to turn off this table name representation in SSMS? I hope I'm asking this on the right stack exchange site. If you feel it's off base, let me know!

  I'm looking for a simple text editor that I can use from the command line in Linux to edit files. I'm used to editing files in windows, so I'm looking for something with the same keyboard interface. That means: SHIFT+Arrow Keys/PGUP/PGDN to select text CTRL+C, CTRL+X, CTRL+V to copy/cut/paste And that's pretty much it. Surprisingly I'm having a tough time finding something like this. Vi/emacs are naturally out. Nano comes close, but has its own non-standard cut/paste/select keyboard shortcuts. Surely this thing exists somewhere.   We have a number of machines which record data into a database at sporadic intervals. For each record, I'd like to obtain the time period between this recording and the previous recording. • Bulk Deleting All Messages in a Folder in Microsoft Outlook Web Access

  How do you delete all messages in a folder in Outlook, preferrably through Web Access? I left my Outlook account unattended for several days (on vacation) and when I got back I found several folders with over 5k emails, mostly error logging or spam. When I try to open the Outlook client, it just locks up, presumably unable to download that many emails. I can view at most 100 emails at a time, but I can't select all emails to delete or permanently delete them immediately, so manually deleting this many emails is going to take a while. Gmail has a similar feature to select and delete all emails in a folder, and that's free so I figure being a quality non-free product from Microsoft, Outlook should have a similar feature (yes that's sarcasm). I've Googled, but I'm not finding anything. Is this possible?

  hi, the mysql database has arround 2TB of data. i have a master-slave-slave replication running. the application that uses the database does read (SELECT) queries just on one of the 2 slaves and write (DELETE/INSERT/UPDATE) queries on the master. the application does way more reads, than writes. if we have a problem with the read (SELECT) queries, we can just add another slave database and tell the application, that there is another salve. so it scales well... Currently, the master is running arround 40% disk io due to the writes. So i'm thinking about how to scale the the database in the future. Because one day the master will be overloaded. What could be a solution there? maybe mysql cluster? if so, are there any pitfalls or limitations in switching the database to ndb? thanks a lot in advance... :)

Actually the website uses: Ajax (client site with prototype.js) ASP (vb script server side) SQL Server 2005 IIS 7 as web server This website uses hundred of stored procedures and the requests are made by an ajax call and only 1 ASP page that contain an huge select case Shortly an example: JAVASCRIPT + PROTOTYPE: var data = { action: 'NEWS', callback: 'doNews', param1: $('text_example').value, ......: ..........}; AjaxGet(data); // perform a call using another function + prototype SERVER SIDE ASP: <% ...... select case request("Action") case "NEWS" With cmmDB .ActiveConnection = Conn .CommandText = "sp_NEWS_TO_CALL_for_example" .CommandType = adCmdStoredProc Set par0DB = .CreateParameter("Param1", adVarchar, adParamInput,6) Set par1DB = .CreateParameter(".....", adInteger, adParamInput) ' ........ ' can be more parameters .Parameters.Append par0DB .Parameters.Append par1DB par0DB.Value = request("Param1") par1DB.Value = request(".....") set rs=cmmDB.execute RecodsetToJSON rs, jsa ' create JSON response using a sub End With .... %> So as you can see I have an ASP page that has a lot of CASE and this page answers to all the ajax request in the site. My question are: Instead of having many CASES is it possible to create dynamic vb code that parses the ajax request and creates dynamically the call to the desired SP (also implementing the parameters passed by JS)? What is the best approach to handle situations like this, by using the advantages of .Net + protoype or jQuery? How the big sites handle situation like this? Do they do it by creating 1 page for request? Thanks in advance for suggestion, direction and tips.

• Calling a .NET C# class from XSLT

  If you've ever worked with XSLT, you'd know that it's pretty limited when it comes to its programming capabilities. Try writing a for loop in XSLT and you'd know what I mean. XSLT is not designed to be a programming language so you should never put too much programming logic in your XSLT. That code can be a pain to write and maintain and so it should be avoided at all costs. Keep your xslt simple and put any complex logic that your xslt transformation requires in a class. Here is how you can create a helper class and call that from your xslt.
