• Looking for alternatives to the database project.

  I've a fairly large database project which contains nine databases and one database with a fairly large schema. This project takes a large amount of time to build and I'm about to pull my hair out. We'd like to keep our database source controlled, but having a hard getting the other devs to use the project and build the database project before checking in just because it takes so long to build. It is seriously crippling our work so I'm look for alternatives. Maybe something can be done with Redgate's SQL Compare? I think maybe the only drawback here is that it doesn't validate syntax? Anyone's thoughts/suggestions would be most appreciated.

• How to execute maven tasks in eclipse (Sonatype plugin)

  Hi all I know it must be something simple, but I just can't figure it out.. I'm using the Sonatype maven plugin on eclipse. When I want to build a war file for a webapp project, the only way I know to do it is to use the command line and type mvn package. I've looked all through the right click menu and I can't find any way to do it from eclipse. There's a maven submenu that seems to have no options to do with building, and there's a run menu that doesn't seem right - I don't want to run my project - I just want to build it. There is a maven build option in the run menu, but if I run it, a configuration window pops up for me to enter goals in.. How I do I just do a simple mvn package, but through gui? What am I missing? Thanks!

• What is your prefered way to return XML from an ActionMethod in Asp.net MVC?

  I am displaying charts that load the data asynchronously because the searches are the work to fetch the data is quite heavy. The data has to be return as XML to make the chart library happy. My ActionMethods return a ContentResult with the type set as text/xml. I build my Xml using Linq to XML and call ToString. This works fine but it's not ideal to test. I have another idea to achieve this which would be to return a view that builds my XML using the XSLT View engine. I am curious and I always try to do the things "the right way". So how are you guys handling such scenarios? Do you implement a different ViewEngine (like xslt) to build your XML or do you Build your XML inside your controller (Or the service that serves your controller)?

• VS2008 project with Entity Framework model results in "always dirty" compile

  In VS 2008, I have a simple .csproj that contains an Entity Framework .edmx (V1) file. Every time I build the project, the output DLL is updated, even though nothing has changed. I have reproduced this in the simplest-possible project (containing one ordinary .cs file and one edmx model). If I remove the edmx model and build repeatedly, the output assembly will not be touched. If I add the edmx model and build repeatedly, the output assembly is modified each time. This is a problem because the real project is a dependency of dozens of other projects and it is wreaking havoc with what times when working in higher layers of the application. Is this a known problem? Any way to fix it? Thanks!

  someone wrote a nice framework for developing html5 3d engine. It's GPL/MIT licensed. Do you think it's a good idea to build upon it, and then repackage it and sell it as a service? For eg the framework lets you build 3d environments. so I build on it, maybe add a few features like characters and music in the environment, and turn it into an online game. Is it a feasible idea? Of course, part of the GPL license says that all source code has to be visible to end users. Assuming the web is a winner take all market based on first mover advantage, why care about hiding the source code? It's the product that's being sold that counts.

• Configuring log4j at runtime

  I'm using org.apache.tools.ant.listener.Log4jListener to manage logging with my ant script. The ant script is highly configurable and designed to be run different ways with different parameters and therefore I need to be able to log to files specified at runtime. I have a log4j.properties which specifies a log file to be build.log, and despite my attempts to launch ant redefining properties defined in log4j.properties have been unsuccessful. The build ignores them and continues to write to build.log. I haven't found much support regarding writing to custom files unless it's in Java with their Logger class. Perhaps I'm thinking this through wrong. log4j.properties isn't treated in the same way as a property file in an ant script (hence overrideable from the command line)? Is there a way I can do this intelligently without writing a custom task or something?

• NUnit with an ASP.net web site

  Hi folks, I'm currently trying to upgrade our build server at work, going from having no build server to having one! I'm using JetBrains TeamCity (having used ReSharper for a couple of years I trust their stuff), and intend to use NUnit and MSBuild. However, I've come up with an issue: it appears that it is not possible to test an ASP.net Web Site with NUnit. I had assumed it would be possible to configure it to test App_Code after build, however it seems that the only way to do tests nicely is through converting the Web Site to a Web Application (which my boss does not like the idea of). Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could go about this? Please bear in mind that the testing needs to be able to be fired automatically from TeamCity.

• MySQL: Records inserted by hour, for the last 24 hours

  I'm trying to list the number of records per hour inserted into a database for the last 24 hours. Each row displays the records inserted that hour, as well as how many hours ago it was. Here's my query now: SELECT COUNT(*), FLOOR( TIME_TO_SEC( TIMEDIFF( NOW(), time)) / 3600 ) FROM `records` WHERE time > DATE_SUB(NOW(), INTERVAL 24 HOUR) GROUP BY HOUR(time) ORDER BY time ASC right now it returns: 28 23 62 23 14 20 1 4 28 3 19 1 That shows two rows from 23 hours ago, when it should only show one per hour. I think it has something to do with using NOW() instead of getting the time at the start of the hour, which I'm unsure on how to get. There must be a simpler way of doing this.

"); stmnt.setDate(1, new java.sql.Date(cal.getTime())); stmnt.executeQuery(); NOTE: thre is currently an error - cannot find symbol (java.sql.Date) line 4 here db is an instance of a sort of wrapper class that exposes what I need from java.sql - its just getting a prepared statement from my connection object here. Time (the column) is a date time in my database, and I can only see sedDate and setTime method but I want to store both - also my code does not work anyway ;-) if anyone could give me some pointers on inserting a combined date time (current time would be a great help as that's my first goal) into a MySql DB using a prepared statement I would be very grateful. • How to install Qt on Windows after building?

  I can't find any information on how to install Qt built on Windows. In wiki article How to set up shadow builds on Mac and Linux there's description of -prefix option in configure script but this option is not available on Windows. I know I can use Qt right from the build folder but it does not seem the right thing not to perform an install step. One problem with this approach is size; Qt's build folder takes about 4GB space whereas after installing using binary installer Qt takes about 1GB space. I guess the difference is due to temporary files created during building. I hope some install procedure would install (copy) only needed files leaving temporary files in the build folder.

• Using adaptive step sizes with scipy.integrate.ode

  The (brief) documentation for scipy.integrate.ode says that two methods (dopri5 and dop853) have stepsize control and dense output. Looking at the examples and the code itself, I can only see a very simple way to get output from an integrator. Namely, it looks like you just step the integrator forward by some fixed dt, get the function value(s) at that time, and repeat. My problem has pretty variable timescales, so I'd like to just get the values at whatever time steps it needs to evaluate to achieve the required tolerances. That is, early on, things are changing slowly, so the output time steps can be big. But as things get interesting, the output time steps have to be smaller. I don't actually want dense output at equal intervals, I just want the time steps the adaptive function uses.

• Changing a project's files based on solution in Visual Studio 2008

  In one C# solution I have several projects that share a CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file, so that certain assembly attributes are shared across all projects. This works fine so long as I only have one CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file. However I have several solutions (applications) which use these projects, and each solution has its own version of CommonAssemblyInfo.cs. How can I make the projects use a different CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file depending on which solution they are in? In the end I want my assemblies to have attributes specific to the solution they were compiled from. I don't think I can make them files Solution files because they can't all be in the same directory with the same filename. I can't use pre-build events because I don't have a particular project which is always built first. I would prefer not to use a build script because I would like to be able to build and run the solutions through the Visual Studio environment.

• Visual C++ application/libarary size anomoly

  This is just a bit of a general question regading app/lib file sizes. When I build a particular library in my C++ solution I notice that the .lib file size is larger in the release build than in the debug (1.2mb Vs 800k). However when I build an app in the same solution, using the aforementioned library, the release .exe is always smaller (as I'd expect) than thew debug .exe (50k vs 200k). I would always have expected the release verisons of anything to be smaller than the debug versions. What gives?

  I'd like to write a subscript that adds a unique identifier (machine time) to a script everytime that it runs. However, each time I edit the script (in IDLE) the indetifiers are over-written. Is there a elegant way of doing this. • Using CMake with Eclipse CDT, quickly switch targets?

  I'm using the CDT4 - MinGW Makefiles generator. Project-Build All successfully builds the target (a shared library) but it seems I would have to (A) open a project settings page and type in the target, hoping it's spelled right*, or (B) run make from a terminal to "build" the install and package targets. I noticed a promising Project-Make Target entry, but the Create... and Build... sub-entries are greyed-out. • Building ffmpeg with an executable output

  I generally don't like to ask such "you figure it out for me" questions, but I suspect this one will be really simple for a C++ guru. I want to build ffmpeg for Android, and I'd like it to output an executable rather than a set of libraries. We've been using the guardian project's build: https://github.com/guardianproject/android-ffmpeg It does produce what we want, but I've found tweaking it for different architectures to be, at best, unpleasant. I've gotten this version to build: https://github.com/appunite/AndroidFFmpeg It does a nice job of slicing and dicing different architectures, but produces a jni version. There is a long story as to why I want the exe, but I'll skip it for now. Is there a flag that needs to be flipped? Some path or other setting? I am at this point fully baffled. Thanks in advance.

• how do I get the SDK version for an app running on the simulator programmatically?

  I am trying to get the version/build that is running on the simulator via code. Basically I am checking various features of my app using the simulator, and want to switch code paths on and off based on which SDK do I have set as current, instead than doing it by hand every time (my testing machine has different version of the SDK on it and I switch the current for testing purposes between 4.1 and 5.1). So the idea is that when the app launch on the simulator, I can read the build of the SDK and know trough matching (I have a function that does the matching and turn on and off the features) if I should run a specific code path or not. I know how to figure out if I am running on the sim or on a device, but cannot find references about how to get the version of the SDK via code, so I am basically stuck. Is there any function that I can call and that returns me the build or version of the currently installed iOS, while I am running the app on the simulator?

  Hi all, After I quit simulator and click build the app from XCode, the iPhone Simulator loading and my app will be install and run. But the app just show only Default image (finish the applicationDidFinishLaunching method - I logs it) and do nothing. I can't do anything in Simulator, event click the "Home" button of Simulator. But the other time, when Simulator already running, I select the "Build" button in XCode and everything is fine.   I'm having some trouble understanding how the delay macro works in Clojure. It doesn't seem to do what expect it to do (that is: delaying evaluation). • IE8 $('body').width() is 0 on $(window).load()

  On $(document).ready I run through a for loop twice and alert out the body's width ($('body').width();) each time through. I get a value I would expect (ex. 1092). On $(window).load I run through another for loop twice, also alerting out the body's width each time through. I get 0 the first time through (and the page looks completely blank behind the alert), and then a value I would expect the second time through (ex. 1092). This is an issue I am not able to replicate in a stripped-down example, nor any other browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, IE9, IE10). Does anyone have any ideas, or other things that I could test for? I am using $(window).load to cut up some divs based on their width, which is based on their font size, which is based on a webfont (which isn't necessarily loaded by the time $(document).ready fires).

I can find it like entering exact value like in table 08:30 or 10:25 , it finds. But I want to make that getting system time and checking that is it between 08:30 and 10:25 or 10:25 and 12:30 . Then I can sythat it is first lesson or it is second lesson . I have also table includes Table_Time column has 5 record like 08:20 , 10:25 , 12:20 so on. Could I use like : select Lesson_Time from mydb.clock where Lesson_Time between (current time)-30 AND (current time)+30 Or can I use between operator between two columns ? Like creating Lesson_Time_Start and Lesson_Time_End and compairing current time like Lesson_Start_Time

• Problems with DNS propagation 10 days after a change was made

  The engineering team I work with has been in the process of moving equipment from one datacenter to another. Ten days ago we moved one of our name servers authoritative for our client's domains (ns1.faithhiway.com) and updated its IP address with its respective DNS provider (register.com) to point to the new datacenter. All tests done show that this name server is correctly running at its new location and when queried, returning the correct response for any domains it is responsible for. The problem is that well after 72 hours had gone by we were still seeing more DNS activity at its old IP address than at the new. The good news is that we kept a name server responding on the old IP address for the time being so we are not seeing any issues with the domains our nameserver is responsible for but the goal is to retire that as soon as possible. As you can see from WhatsMyDNS.net, a decent amount of propagation has occurred over the last 10 days since we made this change, but still there are some locations reporting our original IP. Considering that the TTL is only 3600 with the name servers responsible for this domain, it does not make any sense to myself or the other engineers working with me that we are having this issue. But a few (OpenDNS and SpeakEasy in the examples above) are still showing the old IP address. Considering the length of time that has gone by, it seems obvious to me that either we have made a mistake and not thoroughly handled the DNS changes on our end (likely) or there is a problem with either the DNS provider for this domain (Register) or with some of the DNS servers out in the wild (rather unlikely). Any advice on how I can proceed with this? UPDATE (January 31, 2011): First of all, I apologize for the length of both the original question and this update. I contemplated removing some of the excess from the original post but just in case this problem and its solution are helpful to someone else in the future I'm just going to leave everything as it is. Anyway, I've been doing some more research into this problem, and have discovered the following interesting occurrence. While running a check on the glue records for faithhiway.com always resolve correctly, if I go and check a client domain (where ns1.faithhiway.com is authoritative), I get a strange response. It looks like the root servers are returning nsX.faithhiway.com as their old IP addresses still (under Additional Section). Because we have a server still there responding to DNS queries, the trace finishes and returns the correct IP addresses as the final step (again, under Additional Section). • SQLAuthority News – Professional Development and Community

  I was recently invited by Hyderabad Techies to deliver a keynote for their 16-day online session called TECH THUNDERS. This event has been running from May 15 and will continue up to the end of the month May 30). There would be a total of 30 sessions. In every evening of those 16 day, there will be either one or two sessions from several noted industry experts. It is the same group which has received the Microsoft Community Impact Award as the Best User Group in India as for developers. I have never talked about Professional Development before. Even if this was my first time to do so, I still accepted the wonderful challenge for the sake of the thousands of audience who were expected to attend this online event. Time is of the essence; I had 15 minutes to deliver the keynote and open the event. The reason why I was nervous was because I had to cover precisely only 15 minutes- no more, no less. If I had an hour, I would have been very confident because I knew I could do a good job for sure. However, I still needed to open the event as great as it can be even if the time was short. I finally created a 6-slide small presentation. In reality, there were only two pages which had the main contents of my keynote, and the remaining slides were just wrappers and decors. The slide in which I spent a good amount of time is the slide which talks about Professional Development. The content of the slide is as follows: Today, Technology and You Keep your eyes, ears and senses open – Stay Active! You are not the first one who faced the problem – Search Online! Learn the web – Blogs, Forums and Friends! Trust the Technology, Not Print – Test Everything! Community and You! I had a very little time creating the slide deck as I was busy the whole day doing the Advanced SQL Server Training. I had put together these slides during the tea/coffee break of my session. Though it was just a six-bullet point, I had received quite a few emails right after keynote requesting me to talk more about this subject and share the details of my slide deck. I have talked with the event organizer and he will put the keynote online very soon. The subject of the talk is very simple; it revolves around the community. Time has changed, and Internet has come a long way from where it was many years ago. Now that we are all connected, help via the Internet and useful software is easily available around us. In fact, RSS, Newletters and few other technologies have progressed so much that the help through news is now being delivered to our door steps, instead of going out and seeking them. Sometimes, a simple search online solves a lot of problems of many developers. The community is now the first stop for any developer when he or she needs help or just wants to hang around and share some thoughts. I strongly suggest everybody to be a part of the Tech Community. Be it online, offline community or just a local user group, I strongly advise all of you to get involved. I am active in the Community, and I must say I recommend getting drawn into it.
