    Dear All, I am creating a simple game, where I would like more than one player to be able to connect and play. With regards to a single player game, I am more than comfortable with the coding. I cannot seem to figure out how to connect up more than one player and update their screens when the each player moves. So far I have the players connecting, but I still need to be able update the SharedObject when a player moves, then push it out to the other players. I have searched high and low for a good tutorial / source code to review. Code So Far A tutorial i found so far listened for a click as it was a mouse based movement, then this told the SHaredObject to tell the client (and the others) to update that clients movement. However all of my movement is listend and acted on in the playership class.

Even Object[] foo = out.get(0); would throw an ClassCastException :(

  • Foreign/accented characters in sql query

    I'm using Java and Spring's JdbcTemplate class to build an SQL query in Java that queries a Postgres database. However, I'm having trouble executing queries that contain foreign/accented characters. For example the (trimmed) code: JdbcTemplate select = new JdbcTemplate( postgresDatabase ); String query = "SELECT id FROM province WHERE name = 'Ontario';"; Integer id = select.queryForObject( query, Integer.class ); will retrieve the province id, but if instead I did name = 'Québec' then the query fails to return any results (this value is in the database so the problem isn't that it's missing). I believe the source of the problem is that the database I am required to use has the default client encoding set to SQL_ASCII, which according to this prevents automatic character set conversions. (The Java environments encoding is set to 'UTF-8' while I'm told the database uses 'LATIN1' / 'ISO-8859-1') I was able to manually indicate the encoding when the resultSets contained values with foreign characters as a solution to a previous problem with a similar nature. Ex: String provinceName = new String ( resultSet.getBytes( "name" ), "ISO-8859-1" ); But now that the foreign characters are part of the query itself this approach hasn't been successful. (I suppose since the query has to be saved in a String before being executed anyway, breaking it down into bytes and then changing the encoding only muddles the characters further.) Is there a way around this without having to change the properties of the database or reconstruct it? PostScript: I found this function on StackOverflow when making up a title, it didn't seem to work (I might not have used it correctly, but even if it did work it doesn't seem like it could be the best solution.):

    When Oracle logs a parameterized SQL query failing, it shows "?" in place of the parameters, i.e. the query before replacing parameters. For example, "SELECT * FROM table where col like '?'" SQL state [99999]; error code [29902]; ORA-29902: error in executing ODCIIndexStart() routine ORA-20000: Oracle Text error: DRG-50901: text query parser syntax error on line 1, column 48 Is there a way to change logging so it shows the parameter values? The information above is absolutely useless unless I can see what the actual parsing problem was. In general, is there a way to set logs in Oracle to show parameters in parameterized query errors?

    How do I bind any version or a range of versions of an assembly by using the app.config? I'm currently binding the MySql.Data assembly like this: <runtime> <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" applies-to="v2.0.50727"> <qualifyAssembly partialName="MySql.Data" fullName="MySql.Data, Version=6.2.2.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d, processorArchitecture=MSIL"/> </assemblyBinding> </runtime> Any version of MySql.Data other than 6.2.2.0 is not working this way. The versions of this assembly are changing fast so I either want to bind any or all versions beginning with 6.2 to my application without changing the app.config each time.

    Hi, I am working on a project to perform template matching on a video captured via my webcam. I am able to create 2 template from the webcam capture, but I am unable to perform template matching for both. The program can run only with either template matching, but not both. My program sequence is: Capture from webcam get template 1 get template 2 perform template 1 matching with webcam capture then perform template 2 matching with webcam capture if fail, stop. Can any expert advice me on this?

  • checking if records exists in DB, in single step or 2 steps?

    Suppose you want to get a record from database which returns a large data and requires multiple joins. So my question would be is it better to use a single query to check if data exists and get the result if it exists. Or do a more simple query to check if data exists then id record exists, query once again to get the result knowing that it exists. Example: 3 tables a, b and ab(junction table) select * from from a, b, ab where condition and condition and condition and condition etc... or select id from a, b ab where condition then if exists do the query above. So I don't know if there is any reason to do the second. Any ideas how this affects DB performance or does it matter at all?

However, printing the array in CodeIgniter, it has no value for one field ,seven_profit, where it is there in the SQL query ran in phpMyAdmin, just the discrepancy in this one field, from sql to php array... I just can’t see why, when printing the array, that one field, which should have value of 26, contains nothing? Any ideas? I changed the field name from starting with a number in attempt to fix it, but no difference. I know this is complex and looks horrible, any help or just people coming across something similar would be great to know about, thanks. Sam

  • Odd 'UNION' behavior in an Oracle SQL query

    Here's my query: SELECT my_view.* FROM my_view WHERE my_view.trial in (select 2 as trial_id from dual union select 3 from dual union select 4 from dual) and my_view.location like ('123-%') When I execute this query it returns results which do not conform to the my_view.location like ('123-%') condition. It's as if that condition is being ignored completely. I can even change it to my_view.location IS NULL and it returns the same results, despite that field being not-nullable. I know this query seems ridiculous with the selects from dual, but I've structured it this way to replicate a problem I have when I use a 'WITH' clause (the results of that query are where the selects from dual inline view are). I can modify the query like so and it returns the expected results: SELECT my_view.* FROM my_view WHERE my_view.trial in (2, 3, 4) and my_view.location like ('123-%') Unfortunately I do not know the trial values up front (they are queried for in a 'WITH' clause) so I cannot structure my query this way. What am I doing wrong? I will say that the my_view view is composed of 3 other views whose results are UNION ALL and each of which retrieve some data over a DB Link. Not that I believe that should matter, but in case it does.

    Having looked at several available http server libraries I have not yet found what I am looking for and am sure I can't be the first to have this set of requirements. I need a library which presents an API which is 'pipelined'. Pipelining is used to describe an HTTP feature where multiple HTTP requests can be sent across a TCP link at a time without waiting for a response. I want a similar feature on the library API where my application can receive all of those request without having to send a response (I will respond but want the ability to process multiple requests at a time to reduce the impact of internal latency). So the web server library will need to support the following flow 1) HTTP Client transmits http request 1 2) HTTP Client transmits http request 2 ... 3) Web Server Library receives request 1 and passes it to My Web Server App 4) My Web Server App receives request 1 and dispatches it to My System 5) Web Server receives request 2 and passes it to My Web Server App 6) My Web Server App receives request 2 and dispatches it to My System 7) My Web Server App receives response to request 1 from My System and passes it to Web Server 8) Web Server transmits HTTP response 1 to HTTP Client 9) My Web Server App receives response to request 2 from My System and passes it to Web Server 10) Web Server transmits HTTP response 2 to HTTP Client Hopefully this illustrates my requirement. There are two key points to recognise. Responses to the Web Server Library are asynchronous and there may be several HTTP requests passed to My Web Server App with responses outstanding. Additional requirements are Embeddable into an existing 'C' application Small footprint; I don't need all the functionality available in Apache etc. Efficient; will need to support thousands of requests a second Allows asynchronous responses to requests; their is a small latency to responses and given the required request throughput a synchronous architecture is not going to work for me. Support persistent TCP connections Support use with Server-Push Comet connections Open Source / GPL support for HTTPS Portable across linux, windows; preferably more.   • Separate tables or single table with queries?

    I'm making an employee information database. I need to handle separated employees. Should I a. set up a query with a macro to send separated employees to a separate table, or b. just add a flag to the single table denoting separation? I understand that it's best practice to take choice b, and the one reason I can think of for this is that any structural changes I make to the table later will have to be done in both places. But it also seems like setting up a flag forces me to filter out that flag for basically every useful query I'm going to make in the future.

  • Has test driven development (TDD) actually benefited a real world project?

    I am not new to coding. I have been coding (seriously) for over 15 years now. I have always had some testing for my code. However, over the last few months I have been learning test driven design/development (TDD) using Ruby on Rails. So far, I'm not seeing the benefit. I see some benefit to writing tests for some things, but very few. And while I like the idea of writing the test first, I find I spend substantially more time trying to debug my tests to get them to say what I really mean than I do debugging actual code. This is probably because the test code is often substantially more complicated than the code it tests. I hope this is just inexperience with the available tools (RSpec in this case). I must say though, at this point, the level of frustration mixed with the disappointing lack of performance is beyond unacceptable. So far, the only value I'm seeing from TDD is a growing library of RSpec files that serve as templates for other projects/files. Which is not much more useful, maybe less useful, than the actual project code files. In reading the available literature, I notice that TDD seems to be a massive time sink up front, but pays off in the end. I'm just wondering, are there any real world examples? Does this massive frustration ever pay off in the real world? I really hope I did not miss this question somewhere else on here. I searched, but all the questions/answers are several years old at this point. It was a rare occasion when I found a developer who would say anything bad about TDD, which is why I have spent as much time on this as I have. However, I noticed that nobody seems to point to specific real-world examples. I did read one answer that said the guy debugging the code in 2011 would thank you for have a complete unit testing suite (I think that comment was made in 2008). So, I'm just wondering, after all these years, do we finally have any examples showing the payoff is real? Has anybody actually inherited or gone back to code that was designed/developed with TDD and has a complete set of unit tests and actually felt a payoff? Or did you find that you were spending so much time trying to figure out what the test was testing (and why it was important) that you just tossed out the whole mess and dug into the code?

  • How do I do MongoDB console-style queries in PHP?

    I'm trying to get a MongoDB query from the javascript console into my PHP app. What I'm trying to avoid is having to translate the query into the PHP "native driver"'s format... I don't want to hand build arrays and hand-chain functions any more than I want to manually build an array of MySQL's internal query structure just to get data. I already have a string producing the exact content I want in the Mongo console: db.intake.find({"processed": {"$exists": "false"}}).sort({"insert_date": "1"}).limit(10); The question is, is there a way for me to hand this string, as is, to MongoDB and have it return a cursor with the dataset I request? Right now I'm at the "write your own parser because it's not valid json to kinda turn a subset of valid Mongo queries into the format the PHP native driver wants" state, which isn't very fun. I don't want an ORM or a massive wrapper library; I just want to give a function my query string as it exists in the console and get an Iterator back that I can work with. I know there are a couple of PHP-based Mongo manager applications that apparently take console-style queries and handle them, but initial browsing through their code, I'm not sure how they handle the translation. I absolutely love working with mongo in the console, but I'm rapidly starting to loathe the thought of converting every query into the format the native writer wants...

  • Passing a parameter in a Report's Open Event to a parameter query (Access 2007)

    Hi there, I would like to know if there is a way to set the parameters in an Access 2007 query using VBA. I am new to using VBA in Access, and I have been tasked with adding a little piece of functionality to an existing app. The issue I am having is that the same report can be called in two different places in the application. The first being on a command button on a data entry form, the other from a switchboard button. The report itself is based on a parameter query that has requires the user to enter a Supplier ID. The user would like to not have to enter the Supplier ID on the data entry form (since the form displays the Supplier ID already), but from the switchboard, they would like to be prompted to enter a Supplier ID. Where I am stuck is how to call the report's query (in the report's open event) and pass the SupplierID from the form as the parameter. I have been trying for a while, and I can't get anything to work correctly. Here is my code so far, but I am obviously stumped. Private Sub Report_Open(Cancel As Integer) Dim intSupplierCode As Integer 'Check to see if the data entry form is open If CurrentProject.AllForms("frmExample").IsLoaded = True Then 'Retrieve the SupplierID from the data entry form intSupplierCode = Forms![frmExample]![SupplierID] 'Call the parameter query passing the SupplierID???? If any of you could help, that would be great!
