• DVI+HDMI out, at startup only HDMI is available

  I have my computer next to my hdtv. The main screen is connected via DVI while the tv is connected via HDMI. If I start the computer without the HDMI plugged in, everything is ok: I see the login screen and sound is output through analog out. But if the HDMI is plugged in before I start the computer, only the tv gets an image (the login screen), the main screen is black or at some times purple, but even after login the main screen is black. Also sound is still output through analog out. Not sure whether it's a hw issue, or an Ubuntu issue, or a combined hardware/Ubuntu compatibility issue (Sandy Bridge). This is my setup: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot (64bit) ASUS P8H67-M LE Intel Core i3-2100 I don't have any custom video settings, my main screen is recognized properly when HDMI is not plugged in at startup. • Pac-Man Hiding Spot Makes High Scores a Snap

  This interesting bug (feature?) in the original Pac-Man game makes it easy to hide from the ghosts, ensuring a long-lived and well-fed Pac-Man. Check out the video above to see the black hole you can park Pac-Man in to avoid assault by the ghosts. There’s two big caveats with this trick: first, it only works in the original game (spin offs and modern adaptations won’t necessarily have it but the original machine and MAME implementations of it will). Should I use pack of pre-computed glow sources textures for each frame of ray animation like in this article http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems/gpugems_ch21.html and put it in bloom shader? • Best practices for coding date sensitive websites

  I'm creating a website for an event that is coming up. It has some functionality related to the event (such as "send me a reminder"), other stuff that takes place during the event, and finally some stuff that comes after the event. I need to start working on code that takes place during the event and after the event, plus some fixes for the current site (which is already live). What is the best way to approach this problem? Some solutions that occur to me are creating branches for each state and merging stuff as needed. Other one is hiding and showing functionality based on the date, i.e if (currentDate < eventDay) { reminder.show();}. Ideas?

• How to do the Geometry Wars gravity well effect

  I'm not talking about the background grid here, I'm talking about the swirly particles going around the Gravity Wells! I've always liked the effect and decided it'd be a fun experiment to replicate it, I know GW uses Hooke's law all over the place, but I don't think the Particle-to-Well effect is done using springs, it looks like a distance-squared function. Here is a video demonstrating the effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgJe0YI18Fg I can implement a spring or gravity effect on some particles just fine, that's easy. But I can't seem to get the effect to look similar to GWs effect. When I watch the effect in game it seems that the particles are emitted in bunches from the Well itself, they spiral outward around the center of the well, and eventually get flung outward, fall back towards the well, and repeat. How does he make the particles spiral outward when spawned? How does he keep the particle bunches together when near the Well but spread away from each other when they're flung outward? How does he keep the particles so strongly attached to the Well?

  Hy, I just installed the ubuntu 11.04. After I restarted the PC I got a little notification that some drivers are missing, I click to activate the driver. So after the activation I can't use the unity. When in the preference page I click to the Ati catalyst control center I get the following error: There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig. My video card is ATI so I don't know what is the problem!?!

• Getting started as a programmer -- school or self-study?

  My son who has is married with two small children has decided that he needs a change of career, and is considering getting into programming. He would do well in the field, I am certain, but I am uncertain how to advise him with regards to a lengthy course of schooling, or just try to learn 'on the job", so to speak. I suspect that if he doesn't ultimately get at least an associate degree in program (like his old man), that his job possibilities are going to be very constrained. This isn't the Dot-Com Bubble, after all, when they'd hire you if you could spell c-o-m-p-u-t-e-r because they needed bodies and the ability to fog a mirror wasn't quite enough. Should he go for a full program at the university, a two-year program (he already has a 2-year degree in video production, so he's got the general ed requirements whipped), or does anyone think self-study alone might be enough? To get started, anyway. I started back in 1987 with COBOL and a 2-year degree, which seemed the minimum at the time, but perhaps things are different now?

• When will UDS sponsorship final list be announced?

  UDS-O is being held at Budapest, Hungary and the sponsorships are open which closes on 28th of March. My question is when will the final list be announced? Will there be more than one month period for people to apply for Visa? e.g. I live in India and when we apply for Schengen Visa for the first time, it takes around 2 weeks for the visa interview(period depends on the rush). Then another week for interview and Visa to be stamped. AFAIK the application, interview and collection has to be done in person. This is all what I have heard. So will Canonical give one month time minimum for people in Eastern part of the world or countries where Schengen countries have tougher rules for visa? It would be great if they could finalize the names a bit faster and announce the list by first week of April. I am hoping Jorge or Jono might come and answer this.
