  • Who needs singletons?

    - by sexyprout
    Imagine you access your MySQL database via PDO. You got some functions, and in these functions, you need to access the database. The first thing I thought of is global, like: $db = new PDO('mysql:host=127.0.0.1;dbname=toto', 'root', 'pwd'); function some_function() { global $db; $db->query('...'); } But it's considered as a bad practice. So, after a little search, I ended up with the Singleton pattern, which "applies to situations in which there needs to be a single instance of a class." According to the example of the manual, we should do this: class Database { private static $instance, $db; private function __construct(){} static function singleton() { if(!isset(self::$instance)) self::$instance = new __CLASS__; return self:$instance; } function get() { if(!isset(self::$db)) self::$db = new PDO('mysql:host=127.0.0.1;dbname=toto', 'user', 'pwd') return self::$db; } } function some_function() { $db = Database::singleton(); $db->get()->query('...'); } some_function(); But I just can't understand why you need that big class when you can do it merely with: class Database { private static $db; private function __construct(){} static function get() { if(!isset(self::$rand)) self::$db = new PDO('mysql:host=127.0.0.1;dbname=toto', 'user', 'pwd'); return self::$db; } } function some_function() { Database::get()->query('...'); } some_function(); This last one works perfectly and I don't need to worry about $db anymore. But maybe I'm forgetting something. So, who's wrong, who's right?

  • EF in a UserControl can't see the app.config?

    - by Sven
    I just created a user control. This control also makes use of my static Entity Framework class to load two comboboxes. All is well and runs without a problem. Design and runtime are working. Then when I stop the application all the forms that contain my UserControl don't work any more in design time. I just see two errors: Error1: The specified named connection is either not found in the configuration, not intended to be used with the EntityClient provider, or not valid. Error 2: The variable ccArtikelVelden is either undeclared or was never assigned. (ccArtikelVelde is my UserControl) Runtime everything is still working My static EF Repositoy class: public class BSManagerData { private static BSManagerEntities _entities; public static BSManagerEntities Entities { get { if (_entities == null) _entities = new BSManagerEntities(); return _entities; } set { _entities = value; } } } Some logic happening in my UserControl to load the data in the comboboxes: private void LaadCbx() { cbxCategorie.DataSource = (from c in BSManagerData.Entities.Categories select c).ToList(); cbxCategorie.DisplayMember = "Naam"; cbxCategorie.ValueMember = "Id"; } private void cbxCategorie_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { cbxFabrikant.DataSource = from f in BSManagerData.Entities.Fabrikants where f.Categorie.Id == ((Categorie)cbxCategorie.SelectedItem).Id select f; cbxFabrikant.DisplayMember = "Naam"; cbxFabrikant.ValueMember = "Id"; } The only way to make my forms work again, design time, is to comment out the EF part in the UserControl (see above) and rebuild. It's very strange, everything is in the same assembly, same namespace (for the sake of simplicity). Anyone an idea?

  • What would be a better implementation of shared variable among subclass

    - by Churk
    So currently I have a spring unit testing application. And it requires me to get a session cookie from a foreign authentication source. Problem what that is, this authentication process is fairly expensive and time consuming, and I am trying to create a structure where I am authenticate once, by any subclass, and any subsequent subclass is created, it will reuse this session cookie without hitting the authentication process again. My problem right now is, the static cookie is null each time another subclass is created. And I been reading that using static as a global variable is a bad idea, but I couldn't think of another way to do this because of Spring framework setting things during run time and how I would set the cookie so that all other classes can use it. Another piece of information. The variable is being use, but is change able during run time. It is not a single user being signed in and used across the board. But more like a Sub1 would call login, and we have a cookie. Then multiple test will be using that login until SubX will come in and say, I am using different credential, so I need to login as something else. And repeats. Here is a outline of my code: public class Parent implements InitializingBean { protected static String BASE_URL; public static Cookie cookie; ... All default InitializingBean methods ... afterPropertiesSet() { cookie = // login process returns a cookie } } public class Sub1 extends Parent { @resource public String baseURL; @PostConstruct public void init() { // set parents with my baseURL; BASE_URL = baseURL; } public void doSomething() { // Do something with cookie, because it should have been set by parent class } } public class Sub2 extends Parent { @resource public String baseURL; @PostConstruct public void init() { // set parents with my baseURL; BASE_URL = baseURL; } public void doSomethingElse() { // Do something with cookie, because it should have been set by parent class } }

  • Howto obtain Per-Interface statistics on windows

    - by Canacourse
    I am trying to find the most used Network card on windows 200 or XP. I planned to obtain the number of packets sent trough each NIC to determine the main NIC. I thought IP Helper might give me this information but also it looks like the functions in IP helper only give stats for all interfaces. I know this can be done. Any ideas? Many Thanks...

  • What is the purpose of the QAbstractButton::checkStateSet() method?

    - by darkadept
    I'm writing my own 4 state button and I'm not quite sure what to put in the checkStateSet() method, if anything. Here is what I've got so far: SyncDirectionButton::SyncDirectionButton(QWidget *parent) : QAbstractButton(parent) { setCheckable(true); setToolTip(tr("Click to change the sync direction")); _state = NoSync; } void SyncDirectionButton::paintEvent(QPaintEvent *e) { static QPixmapCache::Key noneKey; static QPixmapCache::Key bothKey; static QPixmapCache::Key leftKey; static QPixmapCache::Key rightKey; QPainter p(this); QPixmap pix; if (checkState() == SyncLeft) { if (!QPixmapCache::find(leftKey, &pix)) { pix.load(":/icons/sync-left.png"); leftKey = QPixmapCache::insert(pix); } } else if (checkState() == SyncBoth) { if (!QPixmapCache::find(rightKey, &pix)) { pix.load(":/icons/sync-right.png"); rightKey = QPixmapCache::insert(pix); } } else if (checkState() == SyncRight) { if (!QPixmapCache::find(bothKey, &pix)) { pix.load(":/icons/sync-both.png"); bothKey = QPixmapCache::insert(pix); } } else if (checkState() == NoSync) { if (!QPixmapCache::find(noneKey, &pix)) { pix.load(":/icons/application-exit.png"); noneKey = QPixmapCache::insert(pix); } } p.drawPixmap(0,0,pix); } SyncDirectionButton::DirectionState SyncDirectionButton::checkState() const { return _state; } void SyncDirectionButton::setCheckState(DirectionState state) { setChecked(state != NoSync); if (state != _state) { _state = state; } } QSize SyncDirectionButton::sizeHint() const { return QSize(180,90); } void SyncDirectionButton::checkStateSet() { } void SyncDirectionButton::nextCheckState() { setCheckState((DirectionState)((checkState()+1)%4)); }

  • How host name is broadcasted in a subnet

    - by apalopohapa
    Hello. I'm working with Microchip's TCP/IP stack and the host name of my device is not being broadcasted, although I can access it using its DHCP assigned IP. So the question is, what is the protocol that a network device uses to broadcast its host name, so that when I see a list of devices in a network I can identify it by name? Is it the NetBIOS name service or something else? Thanks in advance.

  • Why doesn't this CompiledQuery give a performance improvement?

    - by Grammarian
    I am trying to speed up an often used query. Using a CompiledQuery seemed to be the answer. But when I tried the compiled version, there was no difference in performance between the compiled and non-compiled versions. Can someone please tell me why using Queries.FindTradeByTradeTagCompiled is not faster than using Queries.FindTradeByTradeTag? static class Queries { // Pre-compiled query, as per http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb896297 private static readonly Func<MyEntities, int, IQueryable<Trade>> mCompiledFindTradeQuery = CompiledQuery.Compile<MyEntities, int, IQueryable<Trade>>( (entities, tag) => from trade in entities.TradeSet where trade.trade_tag == tag select trade); public static Trade FindTradeByTradeTagCompiled(MyEntities entities, int tag) { IQueryable<Trade> tradeQuery = mCompiledFindTradeQuery(entities, tag); return tradeQuery.FirstOrDefault(); } public static Trade FindTradeByTradeTag(MyEntities entities, int tag) { IQueryable<Trade> tradeQuery = from trade in entities.TradeSet where trade.trade_tag == tag select trade; return tradeQuery.FirstOrDefault(); } }

  • What's the easiest way to parse a string in C?

    - by Luca Matteis
    I have to parse this string in C: XFR 3 NS 207.46.106.118:1863 0 207.46.104.20:1863\r\n And be able to get the 207.46.106.118 part and 1863 part (the first ip address). I know I could go char by char and eventually find my way through it, but what's the easiest way to get this information, given that the IP address in the string could change to a different format (with less digits)?

  • Grails - Where to store properties related to domains

    - by GalmWing
    This is something I have been struggling about for some time now. The thing is: I have many (20 or so) static arrays of values. I say static because that is how I'm actually storing them, as static arrays inside some domains. For example, if I have a list of known websites, I do: class Website { ... static websites = ["web1", "web2" ...] } But I do this just while developing, because I can easily change the arrays if needed, but what I'm going to do when the application is ready for deployment? In my project it is very probable that, at some point, these arrays of values change. I've been researching on that matter, one can store application properties inside an external .properties file, but it will be impossible to store an array, even futile, because if some array gets an additional value, the application can't recognize it until the name of the new property is added where needed. Another approach is to store this information in the database, but for some reason it seems like a waste to add 20 or more tables that will have just two rows, an id and a name. And the last option, as far as I know, would be an XML, but I'm not very experienced with those. It seems groovy has a way of creating and reading XML files relatively easy, but I don't know how difficult would be to modify an XML whose layout is predefined in the application. Needless to say that storing them in the config.groovy is not an option since any change will require to recompile. I haven't come across some "standard" (maybe a best practice?) way of dealing with these. So the questions is: Where to store these arrays?

I'm currently got the code below for just single setup, but how can i setup a form for multi user? which only allowing them to input the username (subdomain) and password. <?php class scriptname_Config { public static $title = 'new_script_title'; // Domain name and path where new script will installed in public static $domain = 'username.domain.com'; public static $absolutePath = '/new_register_username/'; // Settings for general mysql database public static $db = array( 'host' => 'localhost', 'database' => 'scriptname', 'user' => 'root', 'password' => '', 'prefix' => 'scriptname_' ); } define( 'scriptname_BASE_URL', 'http://'.scriptname_Config::$domain.scriptname_Config::$absolutePath ); ?> Or any tutorial that will help is appreciate! • What does an object look like in memory?

    - by NeilMonday
    This is probably a really dumb question, but I will ask anyway. I am curious what an object looks like in memory. Obviously it would have to have all of its member data in it. I assume that functions for an object would not be duplicated in memory (or maybe I am wrong?). It would seem wasteful to have 999 objects in memory all with the same function defined over and over. If there is only 1 function in memory for all 999 objects, then how does each function know who's member data to modify (I specifically want to know at the low level). Is there an object pointer that gets sent to the function behind the scenes? Perhaps it is different for every compiler? Also, how does the static keyword affect this? With static member data, I would think that all 999 objects would use the exact same memory location for their static member data. Where does this get stored? Static functions I guess would also just be one place in memory, and would not have to interact with instantiated objects, which I think I understand.

  • JLabel wont change color twice

Does anyone know why? Thanks

  • C# specifying generic delegate type param at runtime

    - by smerlin
    following setup, i have several generic functions, and i need to choose the type and the function identified by two strings at runtime. my first try looked like this: public static class FOOBAR { public delegate void MyDelegateType(int param); public static void foo<T>(int param){...} public static void bar<T>(int param){...} public static void someMethod(string methodstr, string typestr) { MyDelegateType mydel; Type mytype; switch(typestr) { case "int": mytype = typeof(int); break; case "double": mytype = typeof(double); break; default: throw new InvalidTypeException(typestr); } switch(methodstr) { case "foo": mydel = foo<mytype>; //error break; case "bar": mydel = bar<mytype>; //error break; default: throw new InvalidTypeException(methodstr); } for(int i=0; i<1000; ++i) mydel(i); } } since this didnt work, i nested those switchs (a methodstr switch inside the typestr switch or viceversa), but that solution is really ugly and unmaintainable. The number of types is pretty much fixed, but the number of functions like foo or bar will increase by high numbers, so i dont want nested switchs. So how can i make this working without using nested switchs ?

  • Interview question : What is the fastest way to generate prime number recursively ?

  • Input In Java- How does it work?

    - by Nir Avnon
    Hey guys, with a lot of help from you i was managed to write this nice code (I'm new in it, so kind of exciting.. :) ) And still I have not understand how can I input this code. first of all, I get an this error in the console line (I'm using Eclipse): Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 0 at NumberConverter.main(NumberConverter.java:5). What does that mean? I just want to chack whether it works, and I can't call the function/program any how. I used to call in an "old fashion way", like in scheme, to the function that I wrote and see if something happens. How does it work in java? Do we call the program itself? function? what and where do we write? -I want to chack if it works, doesn't matter how, and I'll be glad to know how can I plugin input. Thank you so much! public class NumberConverter{ public static void main(String[] args) { int i = Integer.parseInt(args[0]); toBinary(i); toOctal(i); toHex(i); } public static void toBinary(int int1){ System.out.println(int1 + " in binary is"); System.out.println(Integer.toBinaryString(int1)); } public static void toOctal(int int1){ System.out.println(int1 + " in octal is"); System.out.println(Integer.toOctalString(int1)); } public static void toHex(int int1){ System.out.println(int1 + " in hex is"); System.out.println(Integer.toHexString(int1)); } }

  • Dilemma with two types and operator +

I have this code: public class A { public string Name { get; set; } public A() { } public A(string Name) { this.Name = Name; } public static implicit operator B(A a) { return new B(a.Name); } public static A operator+(A a, A b) { return new A(a.Name + " " + b.Name); } } public class B { public string Name { get; set; } public B() { } public B(string Name) { this.Name = Name; } public static implicit operator A(B b) { return new A(b.Name); } public static B operator +(B b, B a) { return new B(b.Name + " " + a.Name); } } Now I want to know, which's conversion operator will be called and which's addition operator will be called in this operation: new A("a") + new B("b"); Will it be operator of A, or of B? (Or both?) Thanks....

  • Threads syncronization with ThreadPoolExecutor

After condition is meet the father executes some more child threads. The problem that when I use wait/notify I have java.lang.IllegalMonitorStateException exception. Here is the code: public class MyExecutor { final static ArrayBlockingQueue<Runnable> queue = new ArrayBlockingQueue<Runnable>(10); final static ExecutorService svc = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(1); static final ThreadPoolExecutor threadPool = new ThreadPoolExecutor(5, 8, 10, TimeUnit.SECONDS, queue); public static void main(String[] args) throws InterruptedException { final MyExecutor me = new MyExecutor(); svc.execute(new Runnable() { public void run() { try { System.out.println("Main Thread"); me.execute(threadPool, 1); System.out.println("Main Thread waiting"); wait(); System.out.println("Main Thread notified"); me.execute(threadPool, 2); Thread.sleep(100); threadPool.shutdown(); threadPool.awaitTermination(20000, TimeUnit.SECONDS); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } }); svc.shutdown(); svc.awaitTermination(10000, TimeUnit.SECONDS); System.out.println("Main Thread finished"); } public void execute(ThreadPoolExecutor tpe, final int id) { tpe.execute(new Runnable() { public void run() { try { System.out.println("Child Thread " + id); Thread.sleep(2000); System.out.println("Child Thread " + id + " finished"); notify(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } }); } } When I comment wait and notify line I have the following output: Main Thread Main Thread waiting Main Thread notified Child Thread 1 Child Thread 2 Child Thread 1 finished Child Thread 2 finished Main Thread finished

  • Efficiently get the size of a parameter pack up to a certain index

    - by NmdMystery
    I want to be able to determine the number of bytes that are in a subset of a parameter pack from 0 to a given index. Right now I'm using a non-constexpr way of doing this. Below is my code: template <size_t index, typename... args> struct pack_size_index; template <size_t index, typename type_t, typename... args> struct pack_size_index <index, type_t, args...> { static const size_t index_v = index; static const size_t value(void) { if (index_v > 0) { return sizeof(type_t) + pack_size_index<index - 1, args...>::value(); } return 0; } }; template <size_t index> struct pack_size_index <index> { static const size_t index_v = index; static const size_t value(void) { return 0; } }; Usage: //output: 5 (equal to 1 + 4) std::cout << pack_size_index<2, bool, float, int, double>::value() << std::endl; //output: 20 (equal to 8 + 8 + 4) std::cout << pack_size_index<3, double, double, float, int>::value() << std::endl; This gets the job done, but this uses runtime comparison and the resulting executable increases in size rapidly whenever this is used. What's a less expensive way of doing this?

  • ref and out parameters in C# and cannot be marked as variant.

From here ref and out parameters in C# and cannot be marked as variant. 1) Does it mean that the following can not be done. public class SomeClass<R, A>: IVariant<R, A> { public virtual R DoSomething( ref A args ) { return null; } } 2) Or does it mean I cannot have the following. public delegate R Reader<out R, in A>(A arg, string s); public static void AssignReadFromPeonMethodToDelegate(ref Reader<object, Peon> pReader) { pReader = ReadFromPeon; } static object ReadFromPeon(Peon p, string propertyName) { return p.GetType().GetField(propertyName).GetValue(p); } static Reader<object, Peon> pReader; static void Main(string[] args) { AssignReadFromPeonMethodToDelegate(ref pReader); bCanReadWrite = (bool)pReader(peon, "CanReadWrite"); Console.WriteLine("Press any key to quit..."); Console.ReadKey(); } I tried (2) and it worked.

  • CakePHP - recursive on specific fields in model?

    - by Paul
    Hi, I'm pretty new to CakePHP but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. I'm trying to pull related table information recursively, but I want to specify which related models to recurse on. Let me give you an example to demonstrate my goal: I have a model "Customer", which has info like Company name, website, etc. "Customer" hasMany "Addresses", which contain info for individual contacts like Contact Name, Street, City, State, Country, etc. "Customer" also belongsTo "CustomerType", which is just has descriptive category info - a name and description, like "Distributor" or "Manufacturer". When I do a find on "Customer" I want to get associated "CustomerType" and "Address" info as sub-arrays, and this works fine just by setting up the hasMany and belongsTo associations properly. But now, here's my issue: I want to get associated State/Country info. So, instead of each "Address" array row just having "state_id", I want it to have "state" = array("id" = 20, "name" = "New York",...) etc. If I set $recursive to a higher value (e.g., 2) in the Partner model, I get what I want for the State/Country info in each "Address". BUT it also recurses on "CustomerType", and that results in the "CustomerType" field of my "Partner" object having a huge array of all Customer objects that match that type, which could be thousands long. So the point is, I DON'T want to recurse on "CustomerType", only on "Address". Is there a way I can set this up? Sorry for the long-winded question, and thanks in advance!
