• How should I practice web server administration?

  Security students can practice their skills with software like OWASP's webgoat or something similar to "hackthissite". Students interested in Operating Systems can study MINIX and PintOS, write shell scripts or study POSIX system calls. What would be the best course of action in order to practice Server Administration? Is there any such software/resource available, teaching you such skills with small lessons, or it is totally up to you? I've practiced live FreeBSD server administration and management of VMs (CentOS, Gentoo, Debian) under VirtualBox, but I always feel that this isn't enough and I must push myself harder. So, what would you recommend? What has worked for you?

• How essential is it to make a service layer?

  I started building an app in 3 layers (DAL, BL, UI) [it mainly handles CRM, some sales reports and inventory]. A colleague told me that I must move to service layer pattern, that developers came to service pattern from their experience and it is the better approach to design most applications. He said it would be much easier to maintain the application in the future that way. Personally, I get the feeling that it's just making things more complex and I couldn't see much of a benefit from it that would justify that. This app does have an additional small partial ui that uses some (but only few) of the desktop application functions so I did find myself duplicating some code (but not much). Just because of some code duplication I wouldn't convert it to be service oriented, but he said I should use it anyway because in general it's a very good architecture, why programmers are so in love with services?? I tried to google on it but I'm still confused and can't decide what to do.

• what do I need to do to get started with a website? [closed]

  I am a student and I have made websites for some companies before but now I would like to make a generic website for myself but dont know how to get started as I never had to deal with hosting or bandwidth before. I am looking to make a website that will provide users with information about me. In the future I might add things such as ordering or buying products but for now the idea is to provide information only. I was told not to go for any webhoster outside of Canada as I might risk the confidential integrity of my users or myself. I have no idea where to get started or what I need. I now also have to deal with possible security issues or security holes I may leave in my website creation... So my question here is: What is a good and reliable webhosting company that can be trusted to some degree?

But when I try to embed the link to a certain article on my blog the embed feature does not show the article text and images, but instead it shows the header image of my site plus some other header text content. Thisbug-fix release follows the EclipseLink 2.3 release from last week (as part of the Eclipse Indigo train release) and other components such as Woodstox 4.1.1 and Weld 1.1.1 which have already been released and integrated. To get started with Jersey 1.8, begin here and don't forget to visit the Jersey Wiki pages. You can also grab a nightly build of GlassFish 3.1.1 or wait for the next promoted build (#10) due out in a few days. As it currently stands for GlassFish 3.1.1, we have integration of the final bits for Metro 2.1.1 (currently at 2.1.1b7), Mojarra 2.1.3 (currently at 2.1.3b1), and MQ 4.5.1 (currently at 4.5.1b3) still ahead of us.

  My laptop (HP Probook) webcam has always worked. When I upgraded to 13.10 it stopped working. No solution found then so gave up. • What's the difference between my nameserver and CName settings?

  I have purchased a domain name(mxsoup.net) through GoDaddy, and it is just parked. In order to set up my custom URL for my SourceAudio site, they give me the following instructions: In order to host your site at a your own URL, we need you to set up some DNS records to point your URL to us. Specifically, we need two CNAME references, one for 'www.mxsoup.net' and one for 'secure.mxsoup.net', both of which should point to 'web2.sourceaudio.com'. But the rep on the phone at GoDaddy said that my site is hosted at HostMonster.com, and therefore I need to talk to them to accomplish this(which is possibly true, but my business owner says he hasn't purchased hosting for this particular domain, yet he does have some other sites in his hostmonster hosting acct.) My GoDaddy account shows that my nameservers are pointing at NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and I can edit those. But is this the same as setting up the CNAME as described above? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  I am primarily a front end developer who has been tasked with upgrading my companies VPS. As far as I understand, this is just the process of obtaining a new VPS with WHM/CPanel and then migrating the existing accounts over to the new VPS, testing the sites out, then pointing the DNS to the new nameserver records. That sounds pretty straightforward. What I am having trouble understanding is how to set up the new nameservers on the new VPS. How do I obtain/establish the new nameserver records for the new, blank VPS?

• Broken web interface in WRT54G router

  I flashed my WRT54G (v3) from a custom firmware to the lastest Linksys one (v4.21.1) Now the internet/LAN works fine, but the web interface (http://192.168.1.1/) shows broken pages. I tried to manually navigating to the firmware upgrade page (by entering its URL), but it is broken too and not working. I tried a 30/30/30 reset twice, but the broken web interface still shows up. I tried to flash using the tftp2.exe application, which told me that the router didn't respond to the request. I tried to flash using the Windows commandline TFTP protocol, but I don't know how to supply a password on this prococol. (there is a factory default password ("admin") which I can't remove since the web interface is broken)

• Is it costly to leave the Console and Script features enabled in Firebug?

  For some time now, I've run Firebug constantly enabled to do quick DOM inspections, leaving the Console and Script panels disabled. I'm just starting to use these two features so I don't have to keep using alerts for testing and debugging. I enable them while I use them and turn them back off when I'm done. I'd like to know if these particular features can slow things down such that they shouldn't be left on round-the-clock. Like do they slow down page loads, use inordinate chunks of memory or something? I don't see anything about it in the Firebug wiki.

As I am currently in the transition from large company to startup, they expect me as a front end developer to know how to produce semi decent designs (Which I cannot) I am looking for a book (or set of screencasts) to give me some good well rounded advice on design. I know CSS, but my design are always awful looking, I also know nothing about Photoshop (and am on Linux and have no access to it) What are your picks? • Hosting and domain registrations for multiple clients under a single hosting account of mine?

  I am finally getting regular work designing, developing, and deploying websites for small businesses and individuals. So far the websites utilize single-user content management systems, so the websites create, as far as I know, minimal load on the shared servers. I have always required that each of my clients purchase annual shared hosting at Dreamhost. For domain registration, I ask that they register with Dreamhost, but some already have a registered domain elsewhere and this is fine with me. I do this so the billing issues are the client's responsibility, not mine. My question is: Since I can register unlimited domains and connect them to my one shared hosting account at Dreamhost, should I not be requiring clients to individually pay for shared hosting and a domain? Should I actually be paying for one hosting account and then hosting all of my client's websites on that account? As I said before, I currently have each client buy their own hosting, because I feel that, for example, if there is high traffic to their site, there would be less a chance of the site going down than if their site was hosted with many others on one account. I am famous for being long-winded, please let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks!

  Okay, I have a cpanel account with unmetered everything (pay a bit per month), so I wanna host my forum on it etc I have the domains as lets say money.com wordpress.com forum.com As I'll have to put everything in different folders for instance money will be in /m/ wordpress /w/ and forum in /forum/ or something. What I'm saying is, how do I hide the file so it'll look like money.com/m/ is actually money.com ?? I need to hide the folder name the contents are in so I can host multiple sites, therefore the site will look like its the only site on the host so I don't have to add a redirect for it to direct it to the folder?   Background: I need to build a desktop application with some operations (CRUD and more) (=winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (=webforms). I understood that using service layer is the best approach here. If I understood correctly the service should be calling the function on the BL layer (correct me if I'm wrong) The dilemma: In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL, or from the service? (please explain why) Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform?
